I'm calling it quits for this year, it's a fail at 44 games beat. However, I also played/appraised 41 other games and got rid of them and cleared out a good few hundred games from my collection on top of that, so despite failing the challenge, I've really bitten a chunk out of my backlog. Bring on 2019.

For my last game I managed to beat Batman: Arkham Asylum, which has been in my backlog for 5 years!

See you next year!

Game 21 - Far Cry 4 (PS4) - 19 Hours

Well suprise suprise, was actually able to finish off one last game for the year! I started Far Cry 4 as the first game on my PS4 because I had been playing SNES classic and Wii U games for the past year or so and wanted a change of pace.

+ I had really enjoyed Far Cry 3 a few years ago and this is more of that which is fine because the gameplay is still fun. The formula is pretty much the same but with some tweaks like rock climbing and fun side missions/karma missions. The game looks pretty good too, even though it was released in that cross PS3/PS4 timeframe so it looks more like a tarted up PS3 game. I really liked the dynamic between the two leaders of the Golden Path, it made for really interesting decision making; I felt like I was actually caught up in a warzone conflict.

- There were three major complaints that I had about the game. The first is that the main protagonist was done really poorly. He felt like a plank of wood; an expressionless, emotionless, subordinate, and it was frustrating playing as him. Staying in Kyrat to scatter his mother's ashes was a really silly motivator, and I laughed when like 10 hours into the game he finally pulled out that urn that he had gone swimming with, got shot and scratched by animals with, covered in fire with, etc. Speaking of animals, the predators are wayyyyy to aggressive. It was so frustrating when trying to do something (especially trying to stealthily capture an outpost), and a eagle or tiger bombards you and you have to break stealth to kill it. Lastly, the ending was pretty shitty. If you pick the wrong choice it just immediately cuts to the ending credits. After that happened I reloaded the game to take the second option but the other ending still wasn't that fulfilling.

Final stats for the year.

54 games beat out of 62 played.  I'm certain I played more than 62, but I didn't track games that I didn't put much time into.

Top Games played that released in 2018
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
  • Yakuza 6 (PS4)
  • Dark Souls Remastered (NS)
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (X1)
  • Far Cry 5 (X1)

Top Games played NOT released in 2017
  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (PS4)
  • Yakuza 5 (PS3)
  • Yakuza 0 (PS4)
  • Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
  • Dragon Quest IX (NDS)

Top Games played overall in 2017
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (PS4)
  • Yakuza 5 (PS3)
  • Yakuza 0 (PS4)
  • Yakuza 6 (PS4)

Honorable Mention
  • Axiom Verge (NS)
  • Donut County (PS4)
  • Dragon Quest VI (NDS)
  • Gravity Rush 2 (PS4)
  • Road Redemption (PS4)
  • Steamworld Dig 2 (NS)
  • Yakuza 3 (PS3)
  • Yakuza 4 (PS3)

Console breakdown
  • PS4 - XXI
  • NS - XIII
  • X1 - VIII (2 BC games)
  • PS3 - III
  • NDS - II
  • PS2 - II
  • Wii U - II
  • 3DS - I
  • Android - I
  • PC - I

Platform with Most Beat Games: PS4 with 21 games beat. 1 of those being PSVR games. NS was a distant second with only 13 games beat, but nearly double the games beat as last year, so NS has seen a major increase in play time.

Platform with Most unfinished titles: That would be a tie between NS and PS4.  X1's streak as most abandoned has been broken.  I abandoned 2 PS4 games this year entirely and I abandoned 1 NS game and am currently playing through another that will be finished at some point this month, so I give this to PS4.

Current v. Retro v. Mobile/Handheld v. PC: 40 - 9 - 4 - 1 (I am considering anything not PS4/X1/NS to be "retro")

Game that ate up the most time: I didn't actually put a ton of time into any one game that I can remember, so it was probably Yakuza 5 given that I did a lot of the side content in that game and it is one of the longer games I played this year.

Quickest game beat: Donut County.  Started, beat, and platinumed the game all in one evening.  Florence probably was shorter, but I played it over the course of 3 days, so I count it as lasting longer.

and for some new stuff.

  • Best Racer: Forza Horizon 3 (X1)
  • Best Puzzle Game: Donut County (PS4)
  • Best Fighter: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
  • Best Party Game: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
  • Best Platformer: Steamworld Dig 2 (NS)
  • Best RPG: Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
  • Best Action Game: Yakuza 5 (PS3)
  • Best Story: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (PS4)
  • Best Soundtrack: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (NS)
  • Best Shooter: Far Cry 5 (X1)
  • Best Independent Game: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (PS4)
  • Best Handheld Game: Dragon Quest VII (3DS)
  • Best Xbox Game: Shadow of the Tomb Raider (X1)
  • Best Playstation Game: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (PS4)
