The North American version of Pokémon Yellow supported an expanded pallet when played on a Game Boy Color, in addition to its Super Game Boy pallets. As far as I can tell, this is effectively the same as the numerous Game Boy Color games that were backwards compatible with older models. At the moment, Pokémon Yellow is classified as a Game Boy game in the database, but I was wondering if there was any reason it shouldn't be classified as a Game Boy Color game.

I would say that the box says it's a Game Boy game and not a Game Boy color game should be reason enough. Contrast the box to those of Gold and Silver, which do fall in the GBC category.

pretty much all gameboy classic games get a color palette when played on a gameboy color advance or gamecube gameboy player, a gameboy classic section would not exist anymore if where going with that logic. obviously later released games would have a better color pallette than early titles when played on a gameboy player

the box of pokemon yellow literally just says gameboy
If it's a gameboy color game it would be shown in big letters on the left side of the box, even the gameboy color games that are compatible with the gameboy classic should have gameboy color shown in big letters on the box not just gameboy.

Pokemon Yellow only took advantage of the GBC's color palate, not it's memory or processing speed. So yeah, I would say it's far more in line with an original Game Boy game than a GBC game.

How is pokemon yellow different compared to other late released gameboy classic games
i don't see why pokemon yellow is so special aside from having a better color palette compared to early gameboy releases when played on anything else that isn't a gameboy classic aka just like most late released gameboy classic games

Use the branding on the item, not the compatibilities or capabilties of the rom content.

To be fair, there are LOTS of releases labeled as part of the Game Boy Color line that didn't get a clear cartridge casing. Link's Awakening DX, Harvest Moon 2, Game & Watch Gallery 2/3, Mega Man Xtreme and Pokemon Gold/Silver are just a few examples. Some of those were released late into the life of the GBC and right up to the release of the GBA.
In the case of Pokemon Yellow, I think it was more in line with the games that were "Color Enhanced" for the Super Game Boy that was released in '94. The packaging on Yellow shows that it was compatible with the GBC but I feel like that's a bit of a misnomer as ALL GB titles were compatible. The game just happened to be released around a month of so of the GBC so it kind of made sense to include that on the back of the packaging.
At any rate, for me the bar on the front says only Game Boy so I think regardless of how many colors the game has, that's the system it should be classified for. :P

That's interesting, because that means there are GBC labelled games that work on OG Gameboy. Unless I'm mistaken, I guess that means you can play Link's Awakening DX on an OG gameboy.

Yup. There's some videos on YouTube that show games like that and the Pokemon Gold/Silver being played on an OG Gameboy. Obviously carts like Oracle of Ages/Seasons won't work because of that power switch/notch. :P
