Title: dhaabi's VGC Database Work
Post by: dhaabi on May 11, 2021, 03:23:41 pm
Following tripredacus and telly, I thought it may be beneficial to keep track of the progress I've made with VGC's database as I've just finished tackling a project I originally underestimated.

After about eight months, I've finally finished cataloging new entries and updating existing ones within PlayStation [JP]. In that time, PlayStation [CN] and PlayStation [KR] categories have been added to the database as well. Overall, I'm pleased with the work across the three categories, as nearly every entry is as fully fleshed-out as can be, aside from Box Text information. When I began the main [JP] project, the category had roughly 1,875 entries and now currently holds 4,620 entries. Technically, that number can still grow, as I didn't go out of my way to create separate entries for bundled items that include games in their own separate packaging. At the same time, there is information that I came across that I couldn't find physical evidence for, in addition to finding items that I couldn't properly identify well enough to create a proper entry.

Moving forward, I feel as if, for now, I will largely be working on improving the PlayStation categories, although I may venture into other areas from time to time. My next immediate project is to work on the PlayStation Demo category. I've already collected as much information that I've been able to find for PlayStation demos and non-retail releases, and I plan on tackling at least the Japanese side to it, although I'm sure I'll work toward the other regional sections within the category as well at some point. However, there is a lot less documented information on these items, unlike with retail releases.

I've documented all the information in a spreadsheet, although there is still a fair chunk that has been difficult to find information for. If you're wanting to take a look at what information I've collected so far and to see if you can fill in some of the blank information yourself, I'd be very appreciative.

On that note, if anyone would like to help me with information across some of the areas I've worked on and plan to work on soon, I've made additional spreadsheets that can be viewed publicly that details all the information I currently have gathered and what I'm still missing. If you know any additional information for the items I can't verify or have any knowledge whatsoever and would be willing to share, that would be a tremendous help. Thank you!

PlayStation [KR] would make no sense to add to the database because it was never released in South Korea. The first PlayStation they got was the PS2 with model SCPH-30005 and SCPH-30005 R.

Edit: Oh wait I forgot, despite never getting the console they did get a few late PS1 titles (because PS2 retrocompatibility)

PlayStation Demo (https://vgcollect.com/browse/ps1demo/) has been fully organized and updated. Every entry has been as fleshed out with as many details as I could find, aside from Box Text information for large compilation items. I was not expecting the ridiculous amount of "Demo 1" (https://vgcollect.com/search/advanced/466/"demo%201"/no-filter/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/no-filter/no-filter/no-filter) variants.

However, I still am unsure about these three items. If anyone knows any information for them, feel free to make the appropriate edits.
Atari Demo Disk (https://vgcollect.com/item/78380), PlayStation Demo Disc - Ver.1.15 (https://vgcollect.com/item/7294), Ur Not e (https://vgcollect.com/item/72851)

My next task is to add Japanese demos to the PlayStation Demo category

Just finished cleaning up PlayStation Portable [JP]. There were a surprising amount of duplicate entries in addition to a dozen of UMD entries that needed to be re-categorized to PSP UMD [JP].

PlayStation 4 [NA] and Nintendo Switch [NA] should be now clear of all watermarks.

After two months, I've finished cleaning up all PlayStation 4 and Switch categories. My focus was to update items that are marketed online as Limited Edition but have no markings on the packaging itself that signifies as such. At the same time, I removed every instance of promotional artwork that I came across while adding improved artwork when I could find good quality images when entries were left without any artwork. Across all regions, items that were published by Limited Run Games, EastAsiaSoft, NIS America, and Idea Factory were serious problems when it comes to users supplying promotional artwork for image fields. Many of these same entries featured game case artwork that is found within Limited Edition packaging as any of the three art slots, which have also been updated or removed.

Initially, my objective was regarding Limited Edition items, but it turned into addressing every entry name I noticed that was formatted incorrectly or just wrong altogether. Entries should now be consistent, which was a problem with entry names requiring TLD or Limited Edition information especially. I found these goals to be important in aiding users quality examples for submitting new item entries, as most new entries submitted into the database are for current-gen categories while users generally ignore the style guide and instead observe existing entries.

I took a little time to dive into first-party Wii variants. So far, I've added more than 60 variants to the Wii [NA] category. If you own any first-party NA Wii game, chances are it is one of the variants I created an entry for. I also came across a good resource for PlayStation 4 Brazil games, so that category has been given good attention to as well.

Lastly, I worked on researching current-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Surprisingly, I was able to find quite a lot of regional variants for the latter, with the PlayStation 5 Hardware category already having 26 entries in the category. I think focusing on current-gen categories especially is important, as finding information online is much easier now than later. As far as hardware outside of the current generation, the Nintendo Switch category has been fully updated to address entries with incorrect formatting and poor front art. While working here, I added a healthy amount of new entries too.

One thing that I have done when trying to validate entries for the modern LEs, especially considering that people tend to make entries for SKUs instead of items, is to look for unboxing videos on youtube to determine what something looks like before it is opened, if it has some other things not actually included but sold together, etc. I do not really get the point of unboxing videos (they are generally quite boring to me) but for informational purposes they are very valuable.

if it has some other things not actually included but sold together

This is another huge personal gripe for me. There are more Limited Edition bundles with the game itself packaged separately outside of the Limited Edition packaging proper or without any game at all than people think. In the end, I moved 16 entries like these originally in gaming categories into Swag - Toys/Novelties.

It's been a while since I've updated. In the last few months, I've continued focused on cleaning existing categories in-full and will continue to do so. I've mostly been working backwards starting from current gen, as it's easiest to find information for modern releases. At the top of this thread's post, I will list the categories I've gone through or double-checked to ensure that they're clean, meaning that all entries are relevant to the category, there are no duplicate entries, entry names are correct, and, if possible, ensuring that every entry has front image art.

Aside from general cleaning, here are some contribution highlights:

PlayStation ID thread: It's complete, just not posted. I still need to clean PlayStation [EU] before I'd like the thread to go live. However, I'm waiting on a bug issue to be resolved before I begin updating entry names particularly.

PlayStation Accessory: I focused on submitting Japanese first-party items and official memory cards. There are resources covering some information for these items, but a lot of my own research was needed. I haven't been able to find anything close to a definitive official item list, so there are still plenty of official third-party items not in the database. Here is a spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uBUXt3VgjXTzRl6iJUS4LhCYtv2cuH4h4BZxAYkbHlg/edit?usp=sharing) of what I've gathered so far and am still missing. At some point, I'd like the category to house as many NA and EU items, but the category is good enough for now.

PlayStation 2 Accessory: Besides cleaning, I mostly added memory cards. In this category alone, I added 96 (!) unique memory card entries.

Xbox 360 Hardware: This was an absolute mess before addressing anything. Microsoft hardware categories from the this generation onward ideally should include the storage capacity as part of the entry name as there are far too many of the same bundles that can only be differentiated by this aspect. If anyone has any information regarding Microsoft Xbox 360 - Lips (https://vgcollect.com/item/165002), it'd be great to contribute.

Virtual Reality: I re-categorized existing VR entries into their respective placement in the Dedicated VR categories. Before, all three categories (Accessories (https://vgcollect.com/browse/dedvraccessory), Games (https://vgcollect.com/browse/dedvrgames), Hardware (https://vgcollect.com/browse/dedvrhw)) were empty but each now have entries. There isn't much here currently, but it's a start.

Playdia [JP]: This category is now as detailed and complete as it probably will ever be until unknown releases become found, although I do believe all retail releases are now present.

I've updated several Demo categories for more modern platforms where digital demos are also available to download alongside physical items also existing. For digital demo entries, they are to be placed in their respective digital category (such as a downloadable Nintendo 3DS demos being placed in a Nintendo eShop (3DS) category.) Digital items of any kind do not belong in physical categories.

Some items I re-categorized were placed in their relevant digital category, while others were placed in Hardware, Promo Videos/Movies, and standard relevant game category.

These categories have all been cleaned with digital items having been moved:
Nintendo 3DS Demo
Nintendo DS Demo
Nintendo Switch Demo
PlayStation 3 Demo
PlayStation Portable Demo

Dhaabi being close to finishing the Japanese Playstation 2 section. Let's pop the champagne when Dhaabi finishes!

Ha, well, while I finally got through to the end of the category, my intention was never to fully flesh it out. At least, not now, but it could change later on. While I initially began tidying up the existing entries, I figured that I may as well spend time on filling in the gaps throughout the category since there was less than half of the total items had been submitted at that time. When I began contributing to the category, there were 1,854 entries—now there are 2,893. Judging by GameFAQs' list, the Japanese PlayStation and PlayStation 2 category have a very close number of entries, so I imagine that PlayStation 2 [JP] is still short at least 1,500 items but probably more.

When working in PlayStation 2 [JP], I only focused on adding missing re-releases or obvious numbered entries that were missing from the database (such as Title 1 and Title 3 having being added, but not Title 2.) While the Japanese PlayStation library offers a surplus of classic strategy games like mahjong and shougi, the PlayStation 2 instead invested in a lot of visual novels. If I could guess, I'd say at least 10% of existing entries in this category are for visual novel, adventure, or dating simulator games. That being said, there are still plenty of pachinko titles, so nobody should worry about those missing.

While submitting, I was conservative in submitting items that I couldn't find clear evidence of physically existing. So, while I did go through a lot, I did also ignore a small but fair amount.

Apart from PlayStation 2 [JP], I've also done some recent work in Hardware categories:

PlayStation Hardware
After an entry for a loose SCPH-5501 console was submitted, I did a deep dive into identifying box variants using eBay as a resource. At first, I thought there were only two distinct boxes for this model (Made in Japan and Made in Mexico.) However, I realized that there are actually at least three boxes, but I haven't found sufficient information to submit the third. For this model, I've identified 19 unique console item numbers so far which relate to manufacturing location and date.

After researching SCPH-5501, I pursued the same efforts for the console model I own SCPH-9001. During that time, I identified 5 unique bundles which have been submitted.

I have a feeling that I'll come back to this type of research for the category in the future, but it's low on priority.

PlayStation 5 Hardware
There isn't much to comment here aside from that the category now boasts 63 unique entries, which is impressive for a console that has only been on the market for 18 months. The category is still missing plenty of regional releases.

Up Next
- PlayStation Demo: When working here last year, I submitted a majority of the known Japanese items, but I didn't finish for some reason.
- PlayStation Vita: The libraries for these categories are much smaller than what I've gone through before. I'm just going to focus on cleaning up the existing entries for all the categories.
- PSP UMD Video [JP]: Over a year ago, I made progress on some good research in forming a library list that I'd like to continue. What I've gathered so far is not exhaustive by any means, and it probably never will be. Regarding English-language sites at least, there doesn't seem to be a catalog of what exists definitively, although the same can be said for UMD releases across all regions. In the Japanese category in particular, there is a lot of adult content, so be prepared for plenty of new entries without artwork (and plenty of new entries with risqué artwork) and explanations for why in the Description field once I begin submitting.

I came across a variant for the standard Nintendo Entertainment System Control Deck but can't discern any differences in the outer packaging aside from the barcode. As of now, the entry name descriptors rely on the barcode information which isn't ideal (although sometimes it can't be helped.) When comparing the two separate items, I may have missed something that would be better to use for the descriptor information, so I figured I'd share it here if anyone wants to try to find any other difference. Sometimes, it just takes another set of eyes to find that one difference. And, if there isn't any other difference between the two, then the barcode will just have to remain as the entry name descriptor.

Here are the database entries:

Many (especially older) items feature the same barcode sequence across numerous countries and regions, so there is good reason to believe that both a US and IT version exist together with the same barcode sequence based on that information alone. With that said, the eBay listings I included were chosen just because of all six sides of the box are present that allows the visibility to easily discern any possible text differences.

I'm pretty certain that entry 219862 is a US release, as the barcode panels between the item you linked and the item in 219862 differ in many ways. Both entries 219862 and 7893 feature "Trademark of Nintendo of America Inc." text on the back panel. Perhaps 219862 is an example of a printing error.

I'm not familiar enough with Nintendo consoles to know what typical things are different in their releases but I suspect that a difference is present but we just do not know what it is. Firstly because the one example is just a box and foam, and secondly we do not know to what degree any peicemealing has been done. It is possible that each have included something different inside. Maybe a manual change, or a change to the plastic wrap that holds a part, or a change to the foam, or where a paper item is printed, etc. Also I do not know if there are any instances where a NES came inside of an outer packaging, either an outer box or a sleeve. I ran into many boxed PS2 consoles that were just inner boxes from packs that were not released in that way on their own. They are still added to the db in any case.

I was hoping that a difference could be found in the outer packaging that I had just overlooked, but I really don't think there is any aside from the barcode. My knowledge about Nintendo hardware bundles is also limited and especially concerning early generations. On that note, I suppose the two entries will just have to rely on barcode descriptors for now.

First, I've added two new spreadsheets to this thread's first post:
Missing Official PlayStation 5 Accessory Entries (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uBUXt3VgjXTzRl6iJUS4LhCYtv2cuH4h4BZxAYkbHlg/edit?usp=sharing)
Missing PlayStation 5 Hardware Information (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Cq26s9pP5vdck9Ef-mv1A30mGW_UTNWT08mXpwVcF7M/edit?usp=sharing)

Concerning the latter spreadsheet especially, adding missing information to this section would be ideal to have done.

Recent work:
PlayStation 2 [JP]
Before recent contributions, the category featured roughly 1,854 entries. I ended up submitting 1,097 new ones. I may revisit this category much later.

PlayStation Vita
I'm glad I finally took the time to clean out these categories. Because of Limited Run Games releases in particular, the NA category was a mess. Most of the Limited Run entries needed updated names and release date information, since advertising terms were often used and the pre-order dates were entered. At the same time, most of these entries were largely worked on around the time that many members thought it was ideal to include the stock art bundle images set in the cart image slot. Those types of images are not to be submitted in any image slot and have never been permitted, so they've all been removed.

With all that said, there were many online exclusive items across all categories that really made things a mess to figure out. For some items in the CN and TW categories, there is little information for some, so whether or not the items are faithful to being Limited Edition as they were advertised is uncertain.
For EU, there were plenty of franken-entries that needed correcting. Many entries were given TLDs when there was none beforehand on account of barcode information that indicates something other than a general Europe or UK release. I tried to ensure that all entries have barcode field information, although it wasn't possible for some entries.

PlayStation 5 [BR ]
Like with PlayStation 4 [BR ], I wanted to fill out this category some as there were 0 entries prior to my submitting entries.

[AE][MY][SA][SG]
These entries were largely placed in NA categories. From our rules, they have since been placed in either CN or JP categories.

Games Released in a Country with No Country Specific Category
Games and products are released all over the world and we do not have individual sub-categoriess for every one. So sometimes an item is put into the closest relevant category, at least temporarily. Here are some examples:

Releases in Asian or African countries can vary depending on the release. In general, for an item released in a country that has no dedicated sub-category, use this priority:
1. [CN] China
2. [JP] Japan
3. [HK] Hong Kong

PSP UMD Video [JP]
I'm still working in this category. I submitted about half of the items I had collected information for about 1.5 years ago but took a break to conduct more comprehensive research. Right now, I've gathered information for about 700 unique items in total. I'll be submitting the rest soon.

Recent work:
[AE][SA]
I came across Saudi Arabia Amazon and realized that the majority of product pages for games have good quality front and back cover scans. I added everything I could find from PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Wii U
Cleaned up the categories. I focused on adding information to Item Number and Barcode fields. Like always, there were problems within the EU category, which is where I especially focused on providing barcodes.

PlayStation 5 Hardware
The category nearly doubled in size after just a few days of reviewing hardware bundles again and now nearly has 150 unique entries. I hadn't thought that so many variations in southeast Asia exist due to packaging labels, but they do.

Carrying Cases & Bags
All items have been removed from category in preparation for its pending removal. The majority of items have been moved to either: ConsoleName Accessory, Accessory, Toys/Novelties, Clothing.

Promo Videos/Movies
I quickly fell down a rabbit hole and ended up adding around 200 new VHS items. I tried focusing on actual promotional items instead of spin-off series, movie adaptation, and similar items.

Up next
- I'm slowly working again in cleaning up PlayStation [EU] since the HTML bug has recently been fixed.
- I finished collecting information for PSP UMD Video [JP] some time ago. There are surely items out there I never identified, but I reached the point where I just wasn't finding new information easily. I'll finally add entries for new items once the above category has been addressed.

Recently, I've found myself visiting some of the GameCube database sub-sections while dealing with edit submissions. I figured I could take a little time to clean up the GameCube Hardware category (https://vgcollect.com/browse/gchardware). Much of the research foundation and category inventory was done by telly—I just cleaned up.

My focus wasn't to submit new entries but instead to update entry names. I began with the basic color hardware bundles which were before formatted with a hyphen instead of parentheses. Starting with these items, I decided to include the model name as part of the base entry name. Many entries already had this information as part of the field already, so I maintained that choice for all entries. I assumed there would be a more even distribution between DOL-001 and DOL-101 models, but it heavily skews to the former. There are two DOL-002 entries, as well. In hindsight, perhaps the model number should be been omitted from the base entry name, but it's fine either way. The only issue regarding the end choice is that there are now about 20 entries which I haven't been able to determine whether the model is DOL-001 or DOL-101.

Since GameCube hardware bundles don't have much variances between them, the Jet Black (https://vgcollect.com/search/advanced/190/%22DOL-001%20%28Jet%20Black%29%22/no-filter/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/no-filter/no-filter/no-filter) entries have especially been difficult in formatting their entry names. For these items, I relied on box back information that is much easier for users to identify, since that information differs across every variant.

While cleaning, I did notice that some entries seem to have incorrect information relating to item numbers and barcodes. There obviously can be variants, but it seemed incorrect enough for me to mention it. Despite that, I didn't update the few instances where I encountered this possible problem, since the information could be correct. The lack of online listings to refer to while obviously not owning the items first-hand makes verifying the information difficult, which has especially been an issue for Nintendo hardware bundles no matter the system in general. Additionally, I am pretty sure that some entries which are tagged as DE are instead EU, and EU are instead UK. I left them as is, though.

GameCube bundles seem to suffer the same problem that PlayStation Vita bundles have. A lot of the edition bundles—across Europe, at least—have a box slipcover as the outer layer which sets them apart from standard hardware bundles. Many of these slipcovers have probably been lost to time unfortunately, meaning it is a difficult aspect of the category to thoroughly research.

While there are many existing hardware entries, plenty are still absent from the database. I came across a fair amount without intentionally looking for them from US, EU, and MX.

I had attempted to tackle this once before and got info from Telly about his work on it. But the information wasn't useful to me for what I wanted to do at the time so I didn't end up doing it at all. I had felt I would have to do a full research on the console line, like I had done with PS2 and didn't want that type of a project again so soon. So good it has been taken care of, it is one of the subcats I know had major problems but just formatting for the most part.

In less than two years since the PlayStation 5 released, the PlayStation 5 Hardware category (https://vgcollect.com/browse/ps5hardware) now contains 200 unique entries.

Google Stadia
I first brought to attention to staff how the service is ending with users receiving full refunds after being revoked access to software upon closure. Then, it was realized that Stadia software is not downloaded (ie. not owned) but instead streamed. Such content is not permitted within the database, with the category having finally been removed last week. I merged Stadia entries with PC Digital Download entries. If no entries were present in the latter category, then the Stadia entry was moved from Stadia to PC Digital Download. About 65 duplicates were removed.

Nintendo 3DS entry art
I did a quick search for "Edition" throughout all of the game categories. I removed every advertising image that is routinely submitted which showcases all of the boxed components. There were about 50 or so I found. I'm sure there are more remaining, but these kinds of images are generally submitted to LE releases and similar items.

PlayStation 3 Accessory
Other users began contributing good information for DualShock 3 controllers, so I made it a priority of mine to finally clean the category altogether. At the same time, many game + accessories entries were still placed here, although rules have changed which state that they should instead be placed in game categories, which is now the case. I know that other accessory categories are still not up-to-date regarding this rule.

PlayStation 4 Accessory
I had already cleaned this category, but I revisited it again to address DualShock 4 controllers. Full model numbers were added to entry names, which helps easily differentiate between regional releases in addition to differentiating between the two DualShock 4 models—CUH-ZCT1 and CUH-ZCT2.

Xbox variants
After working with one Xbox variant entry, I decided to contribute a fair share of known Xbox variants since I had a reliable source for reference. Many of these include some sort of added bonus, such as a soundtrack CD or movie ticket voucher. Several long-existing entries were the "variant" entry in some cases, so they have been updated with the standard game now being in the database. An example is Disney's The Haunted Mansion (https://vgcollect.com/item/231680) and the Movie Pass variant (https://vgcollect.com/item/489).

PlayStation EU Disney games
As I'm slowly cleaning up the PlayStation [EU] category, my focus is not on adding games to the database. However, when I come across a game that has unique local titles to account for the multitude of countries the game released in, I generally submit the missing items if information is easy to find. I became set on adding the dozens of games with "Disney" as part of their formal title since there are so many. In total, I ended up adding 225 new Disney entries, and there are now 310 official unique items without accounting for compilation releases and bundle packs. The Disney items in particular caught my attention as there are so many, and I discovered that many of these regional releases have variants relating to subsequent prints from different publishers alongside general best-selling re-releases. With that said, there was only one existing entry from Portugal (https://vgcollect.com/item/51664) that I can't verify its existence, so it remains unchanged without added details.

I'm deciding to post my PlayStation EU Disney list here so I can clear up my personal working documents. Items in red have been reported or assumed to exist but have not yet been added to the database. This list does not account for compilation items.

PlayStation [EU]
PlayStation [EU] is finally clean, although conflicting entry identity issues may still exist, albeit in significantly diminished numbers. If the Barcode and Item Number fields were empty, I added information to the best of my ability. Most typical retail items should have Barcode information, though.

In the event that an entry without a TLD as part of the entry name existed and it was not either the EU or UK release but acted as one of these two possibilities, I did my best to submit a new entry for the actual item missing. So, this means that the "standard" EU or UK item for a fair number of items have been newly submitted. For any European collector owning PlayStation games who may be reading this who also cares about the accuracy of their inventory, I would encourage going through your online collection because I am sure at least one item would be needing replaced, as the category as a whole was a mess.

This doesn't mean that the category is complete. There is no real way of knowing how many items are missing from the database, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were at least 2,000 at the time of this posting.

After writing the majority of a PlayStation ID topic in fall 2021, it's finally been finished and published, although it could still receive updates. I was wanting to ensure that the PlayStation [EU] category had been tidied before publishing it, but there was a long wait for the HTML bug around that time to be corrected which caused problems for many entry names.

Up Next
PSP UMD Video [JP]: I submitted a fair amount of entries before but then continued to do thorough research. I'll be submitting the remaining entries I've found soon.

PSP UMD Video [JP]
I've finally submitted everything I had gathered from my Japanese UMD research starting from late 2021. I can't imagine many more unique items being unknown that are left to add, but there certainly is a likely possibility that many variants are still unaccounted for. It seems that some items received subsequent prints while featuring different item numbers and often JAN sequences. There isn't really any ideal way to figure out which ones are like this without going through classifieds one title at a time while scanning back covers or (less likely) spines.

As of this post, the category grew from 29 to 933. The JP category is now more populated than the AU, EU, and NA categories combined.

Here is the PSP UMD Video [JP] spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11LZUnAvzuPYJ5cuLfKSMlpHqqhi7gO9ROTVFR2cNzlA/edit?usp=sharing) which includes missing titles that are possible to exist alongside detailing which ones need information and which ones contain nudity with links. In the event VGC ever decides to allow images containing nudity, the image links will provide a quick resource.

Submitting horror games across numerous platforms

This comment was made incredibly lightly. I didn't realize just how long this work would take, but it's nice to see everything come together once it's been submitted. So far, I've only worked on Resident Evil games. I'm not sure how many existing entries I've interacted with, but I've submitted approximately 1,600 new ones.

The source I'm referencing doesn't have every item listed, and especially so for more recent games. I've been collecting information in bulk that I send them, which has so far been for around 200 unique items. They generally update their site when they're in their home country which is only about half the year and not now, so it may take some time for new data I collected to be added there.

I'm still working on Resident Evil, although the mainline and spin-off games are done (but certainly not complete.) Next up is to add promos, demos, soundtracks, videos, films, books, and comics.

I quickly went through the 3DO categories to correct the Rating field since 3DO ratings have now been added. Many entries incorrectly listed ESRB, CERO, or None options, which is something that's bothered me for some time. There were a high amount of problem instances, at least 125. I didn't bother adding new information to the field if nothing was supplied already, so there are still plenty of entries missing rating details.

I'm nearing finishing up work on Resident Evil. I've moved on from the games, but I forgot to post a small guide of sorts concerning Capcom Europe. It's been in my working documents for a while, so I'd rather clear it out and post it here instead.

For Microsoft and Sony games published by Capcom Europe (CE Europe), they mostly all adhere to a specific back item number formatting. Here is an overview explaining it.

This does not pertain to earlier published games from companies such as Eidos Interactive, Ubisoft Entertainment, or even Capcom Eurosoft. Earlier items such as some regional variants for Resident Evil 4 for PlayStation 2 do not adopt this formatting, though. Other games around this time may not feature a back item number at all. By the next generation, however, it is the standard. Games generally share the same base number. So, for instance, nearly all copies of Resident Evil Village for PlayStation 5 share the 62000 base (62009 for SteelBook.) Before this information, a prefix is attached depending on what kind of release the item is. After this base information, a regional suffix number is attached. This suffix number may be attached with another suffix based on re-releases such as with the PlayStation Hits line or with certain special editions like the lenticular slipcover items.

Capcom Europe back item number guide:

prefix
IS = standard/Not for Resale/lenticular slipcover
OR = SteelBook/Collector's Edition (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series)

suffix
01/01ENG = UK
03/03AK/03BR/03GER/03USK = DE
03PEG/37GF/357 = AT/CH
04SPA = ES
05ITA = IT
06/06NOR = DK/FI/NO/SE
07/07FRE = FR
08DUT = NL
09/09RUS = RU
09EE = PL/general Eastern Europe
11/11ANZ = AU
45/45SI = ES/IT
78/78FAH = BE/NL
X1/X1ENG/X1EXP = general EU
X1ME = general Middle East
X1SAUDI = SA
X1UAE = AE

suffix+
ESS = Essentials
HITS = PlayStation Hits
MV = PlayStation Move
SE = lenticular slipcover

For the first time in 12 years, the Videos sub-cat is fully clean.

For any entry submitted to this category, the media type must be included as an entry name descriptor for future programming purposes. If there are multiple media types included, separate them normally with a forward slash ( / ). Below are the media types among existing entries:
- Betamax (Beta)
- Betacam (Betacam)
- Blu-ray (BD)
- Blu-ray 3D (BD 3D)
- Digital (Digital) *only in conjunction with other media types, such as with this example (https://vgcollect.com/item/205602)

Relevant James Bond items have all been given updated names in accordance to the recent community poll results (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,12395.0.html). I easily could have missed some items since there are so many, but the majority should follow the correct format now.

I've reached 100,000 approved edits. A lot of them were made while updating incorrect information or supplying missing details to fields like Barcode and Item Number (arguably the two most important fields) for new entries on a daily basis.

The Magazines sub-cat (https://vgcollect.com/browse/magazine) has finally been cleaned.

I prioritized front title name information simply because confirming spine information for these items without having them in-hand is often a challenge. Only when I couldn't utilize anything from the front cover did I refer to the spine for Name formatting.

One point needing mentioned is that digital items do not belong in physical categories. So, any entry for a digital version of a magazine was removed. Similar action has previously been taken for digital soundtracks.

Nintendo Power entries were the worst. All of them were formatted as MagazineName - Volume NNN (Month Year) alongside the Description field being utilized incorrectly. Many duplicates for specific issues also existed due to the erratic formatting.

It's important to remember that entry names should reflect what the product is actually titled. Before, this was ignored so that entries can be organized in the database in sequential order, but this is not important for our site. So, I will mention Game Informer as an example. Before, all entries were formatted as Game Informer #NNN. However, the below formatting styles are used across Game Informer's long-lasting library:
Season Issue 199N (1, 4-5)
Mo/Mo Issue 199N (2-3, 6)
Month/Month Issue 199N (7-12)
Vol. L Issue N (13-20)
Issue #NN (21-89)
#NN (90-99)
Issue NNN (100-361)

Developer/Publisher
This is work no one with the means to do ever wants to do due to how tedious it is, but I've finished a somewhat focused clean-up of the Developer and Publisher field options. I merged the following types of duplicate selections:
- Typos: Psycnosis merged into Psygnosis
- Corporate abbreviations or incorrect formatting: PACK IN VIDEO, PACK-IN-VIDEO CO., LTD., and Pack-in-Video Co.Ltd. merged into Pack-in-Video
- Selections featuring multiple names: Sega/Activision merged into Sega
Relevant items were merged with first company name listed. For any entity that was only selectable as part of a pair which did not have its own unique selection, I created one.

There are still plenty of options which probably should be removed or updated, but I did not go through that much lengthier process.

NES [NA]
I've recently come across a valuable resource documenting NES variants. I've gone through some games on eBay to validate the existence of such variants, and, while the differences are minor, they're valid. The site claims that they've identified approximately 1,200 different cartridges, so there is a lot of work to do.

Magazines
When I last posted about the Magazines sub-cat, I didn't mention that I also spent time to submit new entries for select survival horror franchises and Final Fantasy IX, in particular. Just for items related to Resident Evil, there are around 225 entries now.

PC-98
For a short while, I decided to start submitting game entries. The platform's library is quite large, yet very few have entries.

PlayStation 3 [NA]
When searching for the edition term, I cleaned up every result alongside any entries appearing in the Also on Platforms field. I updated any entry needing to adopt colon edition formatting ( : ) from hyphen edition formatting ( - ). Also, I removed every use of marketing collection images such as the one below.

PlayStation 5 Consoles
400 entries now exist. Near the end of my recent work here, I began adding "yellow dot" releases. In searching what these items are or where they were releases, I've come across numerous past discussions, yet they all seem wrong. In my own observations, I first thought these items seemed to be European PAL releases which were released in countries outside of the European Union (EU.) However, I then discovered that the only items released in Bulgaria, a member of the EU, feature the yellow dot. So, what the yellow dot may instead signify are items released in countries who aren't members of the European Economic Area, but it's still speculation. All that said, there are now entries for less prominent countries, such as this [BA][BG][KZ][RS] item (https://vgcollect.com/item/261777).

Resident Evil
I'm still slowly working on Resident Evil movies. I'm trying to be as thorough as possible, so I'm burnt out of this section and have been for a while. No one's documented these items in detail before, so I'm fully spearheading research for this subset of items. I'd like to have it done sooner than later since I've been working with Resident Evil for about a year now and am nearly done, but I may need a break.

NES [NA]
I've recently come across a valuable resource documenting NES variants. I've gone through some games on eBay to validate the existence of such variants, and, while the differences are minor, they're valid. The site claims that they've identified approximately 1,200 different cartridges, so there is a lot of work to do.

Below is just one game with its recorded eight variant entries (there are actually nine, but the ninth relates to internal components), which I'm highlighting as example entries.

It's also worth noting these comments:
- 5906 originally featured conflicting front and back artwork, the former with a circle Seal of Quality (SOQ) and latter with an oval SOQ. I also updated its cart art, since the previous image was watermarked.
- 11510's cartridge art was watermarked, so it was removed. A later edit submitted NES-EB-USA to the Item Number field, yet no 5-screw cartridge variants feature a Nintendo serial. The back art (submitted at the same time as the front art) featured the oval SOQ, which is only present in one 3-screw cartridge variant.

Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System) (https://vgcollect.com/item/11510)
Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System™) (https://vgcollect.com/item/262018)
Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System®) (https://vgcollect.com/item/262019)
Excitebike (3 screw cartridge / Nintendo®) (https://vgcollect.com/item/262020)
Excitebike (3 screw cartridge / ⓂNintendo®) (https://vgcollect.com/item/262021)
Excitebike (3 screw cartridge / ⓂNintendo® / NES-EB-USA) (https://vgcollect.com/item/5906)
Excitebike (3 screw cartridge / ©ⓂNintendo® / circle Seal) (https://vgcollect.com/item/262022)
Excitebike (3 screw cartridge / ©ⓂNintendo® / oval Seal) (https://vgcollect.com/item/193976)

I'm not sure how much work I'll put into submitting variant entries (which also means cleaning the category), but I am wanting to establish a decent amount of entry work to exist as quality references. With that said, I don't plan on doing any research on which cartridges were packed in certain boxes. It's too difficult of a task since there are so few CIB copies being sold to notice a trend, usually. It'd be more beneficial and a better use of time to instead submit the variants in some capacity for others to know that they exist and for them to someday fill out entry information.

Its cool to see all the different variants as it relates to some of the older items. Its always a pain when identifying even some of the newer variants due to case swaps etc. While I don't plan on making a lot of edits to the category (at least at the minute haha), I'd assume we should post matching listings such as Ebay in "Error listings and rejected edits" thread when submitting variant edits?

Also out of curiosity, what occurs when merging Developers and Publishers? If a listing has a Developer of #1001 and that gets merged into #1002 will the listing now show the developer as #1002?

Do you specifically mean for NES variants or variants in general when asking about posting to the forums?

If the former, I've been referencing an expert site which proves to have done a considerable amount of research relating to everything about the system, from the changes in back label design and different screw types used to varying PCB types. Just with Excitebike, I came across two or three cartridges which aren't outlined on the site, but I didn't submit them. It's simple to take parts from various NES cartridges and piece them together, so it's likely that that action was done for those items; it especially seems that way due to how the (likely pieced together) items conflicted with the information gathered from the source site, such as relating to SOQ design. I'm also not an expert on NES by any means (I'm not even sure I've held an NES cartridge), so I'd rather trust someone who's already put in that effort instead of trusting myself. With that said, if you're wanting to work through this category, send me a PM.

If the latter like with what you've done so far with PlayStation 2 [EU] items, that isn't necessary, especially since there are so many. I would recommend submitting information to either (or both) the Description or Box Text field to explain what the entry name descriptors are (alongside obvious differences like item numbers and barcode if they exist and are found), like I did with the above entries. It's too often that a variant entry will be submitted that's difficult to confirm, whether because of a lack of complementing information, by using a poor entry name, there being no images attached, or a combination of the three. So, the more information to confirm variant items, the better. However, if you want to make those forum posts, you still can.

When merging Developer and Publisher selections, it's how you've described. It's no different when two entries are merged together, with the remaining entry now being the one that's tied to members' accounts.

It is my recommendation that you should not bother with attempting to do a full console category variation update without going all out. That means to document the box info, the carts, the manual/s and the inserts for each and every one. I did this for Sega Genesis [NA] and it took at least a month to do it. I previously had done it for PS2 hw which was much more difficult and took three months. You can do something like this for a particular game. For example I had done it a couple time for a game that I own, to find the variations of it and add just those.

For determining swaps, what I end up doing is starting with a single release. Then go on ebay (or wherever) and make a list of each combination and then how many instances of that combination are found. If it is a fairly common game with multiple vars, you will be able to determine which are most likely. An example

Instance 1 (found 20 times)
- cart made in 1
- cart label 1
- manual 1
- upc 1
- box number 1

Instance 2 (found 17 times)
- cart made in 2
- cart label 1
- manual 2
- upc 1
- box number 2

Instance 3 (found 2 times)
- cart label 2
- manual 1
- box number 1

Instance 4 (found 1 time)
- cart label 1
- box 2

You can figure out which ones are likely to be piecemealed and thus be able to determine what the correct contents are. If it is an item that you just can't find enough examples of, then don't bother adding the particular details or perhaps don't even add the item to the DB at all. So you being able to find something different on Ebay isn't enough to post it to Listing Errors, rather you would have to say "I found this combination on Ebay x times, here is an itm number example, and this other combination x times, here is an Ebay itm example" type post because if you aren't going to do that work, then we're going to have to do it for verification purposes.

I can understand that someone may want to not do a full on tackling of the NES [US] category because it is a lot of work to do and not easy like using a reference site to add missing entries.

Quote
Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System)
Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System™)
Excitebike (5 screw cartridge / Nintendo Entertainment System®)

Likely do not need "Nintendo Entertainment" in descriptor, just System, System™ and System® should be enough.

After going through 46 eBay listings, here are my findings just for Excitebike variants (https://vgcollect.com/search/advanced/13/%22excitebike%22/no-filter/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/no-filter/no-filter/no-filter). It's worth noting that not every current eBay listing was a viable reference, most notably in instances when no image of the cartridge back was shown.

box design 1: circle seal, system
box design 2: circle seal, system™
box design 3: circle seal, system™, rev-a
box design 4: oval seal, system®, rev-a

box 1
10 - 11510 cart, no serial booklet
1 - 11510 cart, serial booklet

box 2
2 - 11510 cart, serial booklet
1 - 11510 cart, (missing booklet)
2 - 262018 cart, serial booklet
2 - 262018 cart, no serial booklet
1 - 262019 cart, (unconfirmed booklet)

box 3
1 - 5906 cart, (missing booklet)
9 - 5906 cart, serial booklet
4 - 262022 cart, serial booklet
1 - 262020 cart, no serial booklet
1 - 11510 cart, serial booklet
2 - 193976 cart, serial booklet
1 - 193976 cart, (missing booklet)
1 - 262021 cart, no serial booklet

box 4
5 - 193976 cart, serial booklet
2 - 193976 cart, (missing booklet)

From these listings, these are my takeaways:
11510 - box 1, no serial booklet
262019 - ?
262018 - box 2, unconfirmed booklet type
262020 - ?
262021 - ?
5906 - box 3, serial booklet
262022 - box 3, serial booklet
193976 - box 4, serial booklet

I was only able to find one copy each for 262019, 262020, and 262021, so no pattern was found. That said, the 262020 listing was likely pieced together, as it is a non REV-A cart paired with a REV-A box.

If this is sufficient research (which it seems so), I'll move forward and update 11510, 262018, 5906, 262022, and 193976.

If you feel confident that those combinations you found are correct, then you can do the update or add them. If you are unsure, don't do it or put them off to be researched again in the future.

Images for 5906 (https://vgcollect.com/item/5906), 11510 (https://vgcollect.com/item/11510), 193976 (https://vgcollect.com/item/193976), 262018 (https://vgcollect.com/item/262018), and 262022 (https://vgcollect.com/item/262022) have been submitted or corrected. Details for box packaging and Instruction Booklet have also been added, since there are multiple variants for both components worth identifying.

Since I couldn't confirm Instruction Booklet information for 262018, I omitted the information altogether until it can be.

It is also worth mentioning that 11510 was previously identified as the "System" 5-screw cartridge variant by edit history, though conflicting box art was submitted afterward. Its front image slot has been updated to reflect what the entry actually represents.

Ten variants of Golf (https://vgcollect.com/search/advanced/13/%22golf%22%20-lee%20-bandai%20-jack%20-greg%20-tournament%20-slam/no-filter/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/no-filter/no-filter/no-filter) for NES [US] are now present in the category.

Eleven variants have been reported to exist for Golf in the US. After sifting through around 2,500 search results and actually inspecting around 400, I've been unable to confirm an eleventh. Perhaps it exists, but I've stopped my search for it. It is the same cartridge as 262294 (https://vgcollect.com/item/262294), aside from the amount of screws. Below are its reported details, for anyone wanting to confirm its existence:

Nintendo Entertainment System logo on cartridge label
circle Seal of Quality present on cartridge label

Below is a list of all US NES items with five or more variants, according to the source I'm referencing. Managing Golf did not take long at all despite it being the game with most variants, now that I understand the workflow needing to be done. So, I probably will continue going through this list, and perhaps later the items with fewer variant totals.

Going forward, I don't anticipate posting when a game's variants have been properly submitted each time. Going forward, I don't anticipate posting when a game's variants have been properly submitted each time.

Of course, I decide to post immediately after submitting variants for the next game: The Legend of Zelda (https://vgcollect.com/search/advanced/13/%22legend%20of%20zelda%2C%20the%22%20-outlands%20-resale/no-filter/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/ALL/no-filter/no-filter/no-filter).

In researching this game, I've come to realize that there's more to variant tracking with NES than I had previously thought. It's not common knowledge although it is known and has been discussed in other communities: there are Instruction Booklet variants which go beyond item numbers. Opening the booklet, the Nintendo Seal of Quality is located on page 1. What isn't unexpected is that the Seal design updates alongside the box and cartridge label (or perhaps it's not unexpected, but certainly overlooked or an aspect unknown to casual collectors.) However, the item number doesn't always update with these changes, such as with the following two examples:
circle Seal of Quality Instruction Booklet NES-ZL-USA-1 (http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Wiki/images/5/54/Legend_of_Zelda%2C_The_-_NES_-_USA_-_Manual_-_v2.pdf)
oval Seal of Quality™ Instruction Booklet NES-ZL-USA-1 (http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Wiki/images/c/c3/Legend_of_Zelda%2C_The_-_NES_-_USA_-_Manual_-_v4.pdf)

Of course, this makes research much more difficult, as the variant detail is located in the interior pages of the booklet, normally hidden out of view.

Do you have a spreadsheet or been keeping any sort of connected image list for these cart variations for NES?

The Excitebike cart I own does not fit in with any of the entries on the site. The one I have has the front features of this entry:
https://vgcollect.com/item/5906
but the back features of this entry:
https://vgcollect.com/item/262021

So the main difference is that it is the same as 5906 but does not have the "1985" on the back label.

For the NES work, I've been maintaining individual text documents since I find it easier in this instance to keep track of which components are included in each individual boxed release I come across. So, taking The Legend of Zelda as an example, here is a small blurb of how that information is formatted.

5906's previous Description information incorrectly mentioned that "1985" was present after "ⓂNintendo®." I've amended that just now. (There is no "ⓂNintendo® 1985" back cartridge label design.) There are a lot of variances to keep track of for these items, so it was just a matter of not fully updating the information for 5906 when moving onward from one entry to the next. Excitebike was the first game I started collecting research for, meaning I think I've been become better in maintaining and transcribing information now that I'm becoming more accustomed to where variances may exist.

May I make a recommendation. Linking to Ebay resources is fine, but for a large project you should not rely on Ebay to retain those images. Especially if you think it may be more than 1-2 months to work on a project. I have done things 2 different ways. First using a text file like you do, you can see in this post:
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,6782.msg128484.html#msg128484
Where each item on the list has a number, and that number corresponds with a number on an image file that I have saved locally.

When I did PS2 consoles, I changed to a spreadsheet, but mostly because of the many different things I was tracking that I could assign columns to. As well as use colors.
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,6782.msg132606.html#msg132606
On here, there is also an "ID" column that linked to images I had saved. This way I could easily go back and look at the pictures if I needed to compare something.

On here, there is also an "ID" column that linked to images I had saved. This way I could easily go back and look at the pictures if I needed to compare something.

Regarding the nature of this NES work, each game can be considered its own project, meaning very little time is spent before it's completed. As I've gone about collecting research, I tend to save images during the process while overwriting them as better ones are found, so the eBay links being tracked is an ideal safety measure in the event information is lost or new information comes to light (such as a box variation becoming known which I had overlooked before, which has already occurred once.) Since each "project" is completed in a short amount of time, I've not had any issues relating to expiring links. I still have all the final images used for entries saved locally, though, in the event I'm needing to reference them again.

I'm sure there is an ideal way to collect this information in a spreadsheet, but I've found it much easier to use a text file since variances in box designs have (so far, with the five games I've studied) followed a straightforward progression of updates. In the same text file, I also maintain track of these box differences, like in the below example:

Quote
box 1 design: circle Seal, System, Bros.™, hang-tab back, Nintendo label seal (variant observed)
box 2 design: circle Seal, System, Bros.™, hang-tab back, originally shrinkwrapped
box 3 design: circle Seal, System, Bros.™, hang-tab back, Game-Pak
box 4 design: circle Seal, System, Bros.™, hang-tab back, NES P SM, Game-Pak
box 5 design: circle Seal, System™, Bros.™, hang-tab back, NES P SM, Game-Pak
box 6 design: circle Seal, System™, Bros.™, NES P SM, Game-Pak
box 7 design: circle Seal, System™, Bros.™, REV-A, NES P SM, Game-Pak
box 8 design: oval Seal™, System®, Bros.®, REV-A, NES P SM, Game-Pak
box 9 design: oval Seal®, System®, Bros.®, REV-A, NES P SM, Game-Pak

Also, there is some info on here (PS1 model prefixes) that should be present in the PS1 ID Guide.

I'll be looking at this in the upcoming days when I have more time.

Every post in the Sony PlayStation topic (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,12209.0.html) has been updated to include a list of item number prefixes relating to items found in each sub-category. If anyone knows of any prefixes which I may have overlooked, please inform me so that I may update these sections.

I've now submitted 15,000 database entries.
