Title: Your favorite and least favorite console you've collected for
Post by: bikingjahuty on January 14, 2019, 08:24:01 pm
When I say your favorite and least favorite consoles to collect for I mean the actual experience you've had with collecting for a specific console, not necessarily if that console is your favorite or least favorite.

Here are mine.

Favorite: PS2 - You often hear stories of people who got into collecting for a certain console at just the right time when barely anyone was interested in that console, the games were everywhere, and most of them were next to nothing given the lack of demand. That was the PS2 for me. I got into PS2 collecting in 2010 at that time when the PS3 had been out long enough where everyone was focused on that and also this was before video game collecting got really popular. I had many spots back then where I regularly found cheap games and I found countless hard to find PS2 games for just a few bucks each. Very few games in my PS2 collection were bought at market value at the time, and there are countless doubles of games like Haunting Ground, Kuon, and other rare titles I found for next to nothing. Being able to find these these games so easily and so cheap made collecting for the PS2 a really good time for me.

Least: NTSC/US Saturn - Yes, I just began collecting for the US Saturn again and I'm already being reminded why it was so challenging and frustrating when I first tried collecting for it back in 2008. Let's get the obvious out of the way; US Sega Saturn collecting is very expensive and on top of that the games are incredibly scarce and hard to find in person. This pretty much means that if you want to collect for the Saturn, online resources such as eBay, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, and other sources like that are your only real option, unless you want to be incredibly patient. I went back into Saturn collecting knowing this and had accepted it, but what I forgot what what kind of other crap goes along with mostly relying on online sellers to buy for this console. For one, it seems like most sellers who sell Saturn games either don't realize or don't think about how fragile the cases are and ship them bubble mailers or without proper insulation and they arrive to you in pieces. The other aspect of relying on online sellers is trusting them to describe their items accurately and truthfully. I bought two lots of Saturn games this past week, one arrived mostly as described, but the other arrived and nearly all the games were in fair or poor condition even though they were all described as very good. This is eerily similar to my experience back in 2008 when I actually got ripped off on a copy of Panzer Dragoon that was in terrible condition despite it being described in excellent condition. At least now I have ebay buyer protection, but back then I got screwed out of my money. But anyhow, so far US Saturn collecting has been a bitch and almost more of a headache than it's worth. I'm sticking with it, but I hope that my experience and my luck changes with it in the near future.

I'd say PS2 or 360 for favorite and least favorite... there are too many, but just about anything pre SNES or obscure/uncommon.

For favourite:
1) PS1 (Got it in 2007; still works)
2) Sinclair ZX Spectrum (cannot remember the date, stopped working entirely since 2014 and technically not a console)

Least favourite:
1) PS4 (Malfunctioned after purchasing it after a firmware update)
2) Xbox 360 (mines scratched the disc anytime they were inserted, I check to forums and found that this problem permeated with others as well)

This is a tough question :) although it might not be my favorite console I have to think of what was funnest to collect for, I initially started out adoring the NES. It was the console that got me into collecting because I wanted to enjoy all the games from before my time.  So SNES and NES were essential and I made a retro library.  Then I started moving onto consoles I loved as a kid which was very passionate because I already wanted to relive them like PS2, N64 and PS1.   I'd say my favorite by a very slim margain all time is....

I don't think I could choose over PS2 because I love it and it's my favorite console ever which is clouding my decision and it defined my childhood, but Wii U is very close because of Amiibos.  If you factor in amiibos, it's hard because I love them :)  Amiibos are like a whole another passion on their own.

Least Favorite

I know this one is sacreligious because many love it very much, and I love it a lot too.  It's a awesome console but between PS2, GameCube and even Xbox I can't really find myself wanting to chase a large library for it and I only have 1 game for it.  Another thing that makes it hard to collect for is I have the dreamcast that plays burnt games, and it's essentially easy to play any single game you want for it within minutes instead of paying the premium for the insane price (I actually don't do this) but knowing that I could makes me hesitant to buy any of the big exclusives that are expensive.  Although I would love to get the Sonic Adventure games :)

If I had to rank a 2nd and 3rd favorite respectively it would be PS1 and XBOX respectively.

2nd and 3rd least favorite would be NES and SNES respectively.

The least favourite console I have collected for is... PlayStation 1
(https://imgur.com/zsMCaSV)
There main reason for this is acquiring games in decent condition is more of a challenge than finding a decent price! I had to buy the original Resident Evil 5x before I got one that was actually in Very Good condition! Which was a joy to play finally but my gosh how furstrating it was. I have a pile of PS1 FF games in my cupboard all from sellers who have ****ed me over with scratched discs, I still need to get a Very Good copy of FF7 - I do intend to take these CD's to the CD Cleaner and at least maek them worth something but at £2 per disc it will be costly.

Last year I bought a mint copy for both Fear Effects, All 4 discs of both games were absolutely pristine! I wrote a mesasge to the seller thanking them so much as I was really worried that at least one disc would be trashed. But yes the biggest frustration I haev had in colelcting is getting older Discs in Mint condition, this applies to PS2 as well as so many sellers are dishonest on eBay.

My favourite console to collect for is... PlayStation 3
(https://imgur.com/KaPHk2O)
While not containg many of my favourite games collecting for the console has been an absolute triumph! Why... because Blu-Ray solved the biggest issues I had with previous generations, the discs are scratch reistant! I remember hearing that they would be before woning the console and I didn't believe it but over the years it has proven to be true and the pure awesomeness of this cannot be understated! It's wonderful to be able to go to cheap 2nd-hand stores and buy PS3 games in confidence - Which has lead me to play a more diverse range of games.

Also, many of the games in recent years have gone for dirt cheap, now is the time to really nab up all them PS3 games. It's the console I have most games for and I have also bought many games for for friends.

Ps1 is my favourite system to collect for

i would rank ps2 as the 2nd favourite, but the ps1 just gave me a bit more exitement as far as titles go.

For both deals where great over the years very fun systems to collect for. For both systems there where plenty of gem titles wich i just never knew about in comparison to other consoles

As far as discs go I guess i was kinda lucky with the deals that i have made since it really seemed that many people just did not use them games back in the day or barely used them as far as the more interesting titles go in most cases. I will admit though as far as ps1 games go getting all 3 spyro and crash bandicoot games with near mint discs was a challenge since they where always used but with allot of light scratches as the only exceptions to this rule. Normal wear though but still. Ofcourse bad discs are thing sometimes there is some bad luck but overall the deals for these systems are very cheap so it's not a big deal

Least favourite consoles to collect for are sega saturn and n64. Deals for those systems are absolutely a pain to get. Sega saturn is rare and N64 is just overhyped. I'll place nes as my 3rd least favourite console.

I could mention turbografx and neo geo but to be fair those are kinda non existent so I do not really collect for those would be an unfair comparison.

Least favorite for me would have to be Gamecube. Why?  Because the games are getting harder & harder to find for reasonable prices. Everyone thinks they are sitting on a goldmine and trying to rake you over the coals.

And many times when I DO actually find a game I want for it, the damn manual is missing!  What did they do, eat it?!  Another reason is that Nintendo used those wonky cases with all 2 billion cutouts in the plastic shell. No matter how you tried to close the case, unless you only pressed on the razor-thin edge of the case to snap it shut, you ended up denting the cover art in. I was always careful, but 99% of people weren't. So the art is almost always dented/rippled or even torn from pressing in on the case. Hell, even popping the discs out can dent the art on the back of the case unless you are extremely careful!   >:(

I also feel like I have to literally peel the disc out of the GameCube case which is why I think a ton of GameCube discs have cracks in them :/

I'd be interested to hear your explanation of this.

The DS has been pretty enjoyable to collect for for me. I seem to find the games often and they are usually prices very low when i find them.

Sure!

I have two problems with DS collecting. The first is that the library is filled with shovelware. You can find copies of Aly and AJ and/or Cory in the House at every used game store you frequent. Hell, I've seen things like My SAT Coach for sale in gas stations. To find the stuff that I actually want to play, I need to either dig and dig through the garbage or resort to online.

...which brings me to my second problem. Most of the games I legit want to play seemed to have gone up in price overnight. If you want the game complete, then you can expect to pay even more. It seems like it happened all at once. Some consoles like the Saturn or N64 were always expensive. It's weird that it happened in a snap with the DS.

Luckily, there are only a few titles left that I want to get:

Mega Man ZX and Final Fantasy: The Four Heroes of Light were reasonable last I checked.

Avalon Code, My World My Way and Sands of Destruction on the other hand...yikes.

Favorite would be the 360 as thanks to the achievement system, I even want to play the crap games for the points.

Least favorite would be the N64 as while I love the system and the games, at times, I feel like I was the only person who actually took care of their games. I've still got all the manuals and boxes for my childhood games, but the vast majority of what I find in the wild look like they were buried outside for a few years, then cleaned up by being tossed in a washing machine. And I can't say I've seen similar condition problems with the other older cartridge-based systems I collect for (SNES and GB/C/A).

Ds is definitly one of my favourite handheld consoles to collect for but I do see your point and I will agree that if your looking for specific titles especially those very niche low print rpg's your most likely not going to find them in a random pawn shop,

in my opinion as a ds collector I will say that ds prices have most definitly not skyrocketed in price over night, prices have already been up there for years.

Those very niche titles where pretty much always more pricy than the majority of the ds games with value. The only difference might have been that the prices where slightly lower if you where willing to just pick them up at the current values from someone online at market value years ago.

Plenty of titles on ds have gone up but they where already pretty pricy before that.

Favourite: Switch. Knowing the versatility of the console something feels so insanely satisfying about buying Switch games. I only hope it starts getting more releases that aren't just ports again soon though or I'm gonna fall out of love with it. Honourable mention to Vita, I don't really have a good reason for it, something just feels really good about buying new Vita games for some reason.

Least Favourite: Xbox 360. It was my console of choice at the start of that gen but since I moved to PS3 I've had no interest in playing it anymore and the games I have for it feel worthless now for some reason. Maybe just because it's Microsoft. I'm not moved to buy games for it anymore whatsoever, in fact I've been buying PS3 versions of games I already have on 360 just so I can play them on a console that doesn't feel bleh to play.

My favorite to collect for was the PlayStation. I got my first full time job and still lived at home. I was able to buy every game I wanted as they were shipped.

The least favorite to collect for was the GameCube. I think that was the start of Nintendos limited release of games. The stores in my area either didn’t carry them or only got a few copies of each.

Both valid points. I've had exceptional luck collecting for the DS over the years for one reason or another, but whenever I come across the games, 90% of the time it's all the shovelware. It's that 10% that has kept it enjoyable for me, especially finding stuff for super cheap in the wild. I think another aspect that has kept DS collecting enjoyable for me is that I never went hardcore with it and actively sought things out and stalked ebay listings for games I wanted for it. I have maintained a pretty large want list for it, but I've just chipped away at it casually for years now and have been able to find a huge chunk of it for reasonable prices.

PS1 is my favorite system to collect for, easy to find and I don't have much competition since everyone around me just has a hardon for nintendo.

I enjoy collecting for a lot of other systems but snes is probably my least favorite.  Too expensive and since I like CIB stuff, it's really too expensive.  I still like the system but it's just not fun to collect for.

Chipping away casually is actually an accurate way to describe my collecting for it, too. It's the bottom of my priority list, but there is still some interest here or there.

Interestingly, after my reply I read some reviews for Sands of Destruction and gathered some opinions. I can take that one off the list - it doesn't look great.

That's actually what happened with me with Avalon Code. I found it at Gamestop of all places for like $20 complete, was super excited, tried it out and it just never clicked with me. I thought about holding onto it for bragging rights, but it was just too valuable a game for me to do that. I ended up selling it instead and haven't regretted it yet either.

I'd say the N64. I have most of the heavy hitters that I want, but the majority of the library is unappealing, with smudgy graphics and expensive, unintuitive games. Even as a kid who grew up with an N64, the moment I tried a SNES, I fell in love with he titles on that system. I'll pick up a 64 title if it's real cheap, but I have maybe bought three games for it in the last year.

Favourites: PS2 (loads of exclusives, niche and triple-A mixed together, beautiful), Vita (fab system, a small pool of games to go at).
Least favourites: N64 (terrible boxes, extremely low availability of good condition games at reasonable prices), PSP (missed the boat, already skyrocketing in price and so many of the games worth having weren't released in PAL territories, UMDs are achey-breaky and the damned read-surface can still be scratched to hell).

Overall, my personal favorite console of all time is the Master System. It was my first video game and the one that brings back some of the sweetest memories of my childhood.

Having said that, the console that I have the most fun collecting is the Sega Saturn. I often find somethingn for it that I didn't even know existed and usually for very cheap.

And the ones that I have the least fun are the Wii and the Nintendo 64. I am far, very far from being a fan of Nintendo, but I do have some respect for the Famicom/NES and I have lots of fun collecting for the Super Famicom/SNES and the GameCube.
However, I simply hate all kinds of motion control (which pretty much discards most of the Wii's library) and so far, I only found ONE game for the Nintendo 64 I really like...

Sort of. Yes, I'd say the majority of retro video game collecting is mostly focused on Nintendo consoles, but the Playstation has in many ways become just as iconic as the NES or SNES. As someone who has collected for the PS1 for years now, I've seen interest in and the price of PS1 titles rise exponentially, and PS1 deals seem to vanish just as quickly as comparable SNES deals on forums, CL, and ebay. It might be easier, but only slightly so from my experience, especially over the last 4-years or so.

I don't know how big your old snes collection was but if i compare the two atm I find it hard to believe that collecting for ps1 is just slighty easier than snes.

Ps1 has some iconic games but It's just not as iconic as nintendo. Spyro and crash bandicoot have never really been as high as mario or zelda during the ps1 era. metal gear FF VII sure but otherwise.

As far as prices go How many people actually played games like elemental gear bolt klonoa or alundra back in the day. I'm pretty sure that prices have gone up because people who played old games wanted something different and the ps1 has some really interesting retro games. The really mainstream games that sold well sell for peanuts atm except for a few exceptions. Symphony of the night is also another example of the older generation finding a good game on the ps1 system not to mention it isn't really a ps1 3d game to begin with. 2d games in a 3d era where not the main stream.

In my experience It's allot easier to get good ps1 deals compared to nintendo even the sought after pretty expensive stuff, might be different in the US though but kinda hard to believe that nes snes is only slightly less hard  to collect for than ps1. Are we talking about lose nintendo stuff or cib in your experience of collecting?

PS1 longbox games always piqued my interest, so when I finally decided to hunt down the ones I wanted in my collection, I had fun doing it. My timing was also good given at the time I managed to find sellers on eBay that were selling their collections either in bulk or just portions of them in special lots/bundles. This is actually how I managed to fill the gaps for my other consoles.

PS2 and PS3 were also fun to collect for; especially for the PS3 given I managed to amass my collection in about a year or less of acquiring the console.

Although I’m currently not looking for more NDS games, with a few exceptions, collecting the titles I wanted was also quite enjoyable. At the time the N3DS was in everyone’s mouth, so I’m guessing that’s the reason why I managed to score some good deals. Comparatively, the NDS is possibly the console (or handheld) that I spent the least amount when hunting for games.

To be perfectly honest, though, I’ve enjoyed collecting for all the consoles I own; I believe I got everything, or at least most of what I wanted for each console at the right time and with a little bit of perseverance. If I were to choose one console that’s taken the fun out of hunting, however, then maybe the GCN since the game that I’m trying to get the most is Gotcha Force, and, well, I don’t think I need to explain myself on that one.

My favorite is collecting for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 2

My least favorite is the Super Nintendo (SNES) and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The reason why I usually don't like to collect for the NES and SNES is because of #1 the difficulty of the games and the enjoyment factor. Of most of the games for them. and #I think most of them are over priced, especially Super Nintendo, for some reason.

Loose cartridges for Super Nintendo games are not worth paying top dollar for, and yet most of them loose are way too much.

It seems people just buy SNES games and they never play most of them (has anyone else noticed?) nobody talks about the Super Nintendo anymore either.

For me the favorite would be a combination of factors like the appeal of games to me versus how easily they are acquired. Least favorite would be the opposite, lack of appealing games and difficult to acquire them.

Favorite would be NES.

Least favorite? I'm not sure, but that sounds the most like GameCube to me.

Favorite:  SNES/Super Famicom.  It's the most fun to collect for imho.  The games are fun and the box art is colorful.

Least Favorite:  SegaCD:  Ugh, sooo expensive. And finding a cib game, which I prefer, takes some tracking.

My favorite for a long time has been the PS2 because games have been pretty easy to find in the wild. However, more recently I've been able to find just as many if not more OG XBox games out and about and I finally caved and began to build a collection for it. It helps that collector interest in it seems to be pretty low right now (as long as your game is not called Steel Batallion) so most things are not super expensive.

Least favorite for me personally would be Switch. I think almost every Switch game has either a collector's edition or limited physical release. Even no-name budget titles have them sometimes. The thought of tracking them all down and finding a place for them made me decide I was only going to hold onto Switch games I really like.

My favorite that I've collected for is my Sega Game Gear. I'm still collecting for it. There's a handful of games left for me that I want to snag such as Indiana Jones, Ristar and Micro Machines. The rest will go on an Everdrive that I'm planning to also pick up.

I've not really "collected" for many systems outside of their lifespan. Generally, once a system is done releasing games, I move on to the next generation so my Game Gear is kinda special. I'm also cheating a bit as I don't really consider handhelds as consoles as the original question asks. That said, I'm going to continue with handhelds and onto my least favorite that I've "collected" for.... and that's the Playstation Vita.

I bought the PSV at launch seeing a lineup like Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Ridge Racer and talk of a Bioshock and many other AAA series that were expected to hit the system in the future. This made complete sense to me as EVERY handheld I've seen come before had had versions of AAA (at the time) series come to them including the PSP which the PSV was the successor of. After two years of typical game releases one would expect, the PSV for all intents and purposes died. All third AND first party support for AAA series was over. The only games that would come to the PSV from then on would be smartphone games and Japanese import games. If you didn't like either of those types of games, Sony's take was essentially "Thank you for your purchase.... now f**k off".

The PSV left such a horrible taste in my mouth that I decided that I would NEVER buy another handheld for myself again and would NEVER buy another Playstation handheld again. It's by far the worst Playstation ever released. Not due to the hardware, but due to the lack of support.... even from Sony. So it's the least favorite console I've collected for as I wasn't able to collect games I would have played on it as they were never created.

Favorite:
1. SNES/Super Famicom
2. GENESIS
3. PS2

These are all systems I currently still have a lot of games I'm looking for and can find them in the wild.

Least Fav:
1. Bandai Pippin
2. Nichibutsu My Vision
3. Bandai Supervision 8000

Mainly because it's IMPOSSIBLE to find games for any of these consoles.
Honorable mention is AES and T16 just due to every game I'm missing is expensive, but its still exciting when I pick one up once in a blue moon.
