Scarface: The World Is yours The most underrated PS2 game in my opinion. Upon hearing the title, lots of people assume it's just some lazy tie-in game for Scarface. It is far from it. It's an open-world game in the style of Grand Theft Auto, yet it is quite distinct from it in many ways. The game is absolutely amazing. No thread can well explain how good it is. I'll try to sum it up roughly. Game mechanics: The shooting mechanics are the best shooting mechanics of any game of that generation, period. No joke. It's hard to explain how well done it is because english isn't my native language and I don't wanna bother trying to explain such a concept, but you just have to try it with every weapon in every situation and you will understand, there is just too much to say. Driving is awesome as well and very well done. Handling is just right, but again you'll have to try it to understand. Other than that, you can mod weapons, hire henchmen, mod your crib (place any object anywhere you want), buy and upgrade property, do drug deals (big and small, with completely different ways to do them depending on the scale), there is a music player in-game where you can select tracks to play and even create custom mixtapes. There is much, much more, but all of this ain't even the best part yet. Setting and atmosphere: This is the number one reason to why this game is absolutely unforgettable. This game is the ultimate chill out game. Have you ever been playing a game and just stopped to contemplate the moment? Shooting bad guys is awesome but sometimes you'd like to just sit back and play chill.. Picture this: You are playing Scarface: The World is Yours late at night. You are sitting on your couch, cozy, lights are dim. In the game, it's the 1980s, you are driving your car on a road at the cost of a tropical island. Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen is playing on the radio, as you are arriving to a coast village. You stop your car at a gas station and just leave it there, and start walking to the nearby docks (as the music keeps playing because the game lets you play music on foot as well). As you walk in the village, you chat with some passerbys, before eventually boarding your boat and "driving" towards the sunset. You arrive at Miami on a small private beach behind some hotel. There are campfires and people dancing/chatting. Music changes to some reggae and you spend the evening having conversations with the people outside. Eventually, late in the night, you call up one of your cars and go for a spin. You drive to a different hotel downtown and go up the elevator. Up there, in a huge private suite, there are once again plenty of people having fun, dancing and socialising. Through the windows of the suite, you see the city at night from above. You feel young and nostalgic. The world around you and the moment you are living is just unforgettable. This is the life. The game has an absolutely insane number of enterable buildings and areas that will just make you stop and contemplate the moment. Outside the buildings, you have the city of Miami as well as a 2nd map reacheable by boat or seaplane set in the caribbean and featuring many different islands to explore. The atmosphere is just breathtaking. Coupled with previously mentioned game mechanics, you have something worth living. Yet there is something else, there is a speech button. If you are alone, let's say on a balcony contemplating the sunset, your player might say "This is the life man" or "I wish Manolo was here..", out of many lines. If you are close to an NPC, you will stike up a conversation with it. Yes, seriously. Of course, if the NPC you are interacting with doesn't have any prerecorded dialogue, the conversation will stay quite bland. But scattered around the map are NPCs with unique dialogues, with which you can have more complex conversations. So far in my playthrough, how many UNIQUE conversations do you think I have found? The answer is OVER 100 DIFFERENT CONVERSATIONS. Seriously, the game even counts how many of these unique interactions you have found. Yet I've somehow still not found them all. The average conversation is around 5 to 10 lines of dialogue long. The game has over 40000 lines of dialogue. I wish there was a way to explain how perfect the atmosphere is, but there isn't. The only way is to go and play the game. You will not be disappointed. This post just barely scratched the surface of what makes this game the best on PS2. |

Ones that come to mind: Shadow of Memories/ Shadow of Destiny - One of the most compelling games I've ever played. The objective to travel back in time and change events to prevent your murder in the present is very unique! The game also has a wonderful presence with a town fun to explore and compare the differences within the decades. if you haven't played this yet I deem it essential! On a side-note, I realized there wasn't any decent online sources for this game so I took it upon myself to expand an online Wikipage for the game: https://shadowofmemories.fandom.com/wiki/Shadow_of_Memories_Wiki The Bouncer - Short but sweet 3D Beat Em Up. Offers the thrill of Squaresoft story in 3-hours and offers replay value if you want to go at it another time. Crash Twinsanity - Easily the best post-NaughtyDog Crash game. Wonderful sense of humour, great level design and great detail put inot the lore of Crash's lore. The soundtrack consists of a capella and something to behold! Final Fantasy X - The last GREAT Final Fantasy. This game could also be considered the best all rounder - Great story, characters, music, world, battle system, extras bosses etc. I genuinely has it all and is the FF game I easily recommend to anyone new to the series. Silent Hill 2 - The Horror masterpiece, while many horror games since have been more in your face, I've still yet to experience a game that gets under your skin and as haunting as Silent Hill 2. Burnout 3 Takedown - Such a diverse arcade racer, the introduction of Road Rage really brought the series to its peak. Dead or Alive 2 - Solid fighting game with less of the later gimmicks seen in fighting game today (though the last boss is a little cheeky!) Tekken Tag Tournament - Tekken 3 with top-end PS2 graphics... what's not to like! Soul Calibur II - Perfection, I don't think the series knew what to do ever since they released this. Great Edge Master Mode which offers 40+ hours of unique challenges and dungeons - A huge step up from taking fighting games beyond the standard Arcade Mode format. Fahrenhiet / Project Indigo - While heavily inspired by the Matrix the interactivity the game has to offer is really fun to explore! It also offers one of the best opening levels I've ever experienced. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - Wonderful platformer, much preferred it to the trigger happy sequels. Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 - Probably the best Action/RPGs games on the system? While the story got way to convoluted for it's own good you can't deny the magic these games have instore. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Looking beyond the surface level annoyance or Raiden, MGS2 offers a very compelling journey and my personal favourite of the series. The gameplay was a colossal upgrade and still to this day features some of the most intelligent A.I. enemies I've seen in gaming. Try it on Hard/Extreme and watch how their comrades interact rather than just aim to assault you. TimeSplitters Future Perfect - A much better campaign this time and loads of fun challenges to conquer, I know TimeSplitters 2 put the series on the map but I still find 3 to be more refined and enjoyable. Zone of the Enders 1 & 2 - Great Mech-Robot Action series, sad how short lived it was. |
