I feel like the gap between 7th gen and 8th gen was definitely noticeable, not just in terms of visuals either. Most PS3, Wii, and 360 games definitely feel rooted in another time, and at least in terms of the types of games and how those games are made reminds me more of gen 6 then gen 8, with a few exceptions. But I totally agree that Gen 8, 9, and now 10 mostly all look the same. You're essentially buying a new console to play games at higher FPS and maybe ray tracing, which is itself something that only looks slightly been than without it imo. I am fairly certain I won't be buying a PS6 and as for XBOX, I haven't cared about the XBOX brand since the 360. The jury is still out of the Switch 2 for me, but I definitely feel more negatively about it than I do otherwise. There's a fairly good chance Gen 9 is the last console generation I participate in for multiple reasons.

It was also at this time that most games developed by major studios for a wide audience were made for both consoles and PC, and in that order of priority. Especially nowadays, a console's library of true exclusives are far lower than in previous generations. And, in recent years, what few exclusives there are are now later being released for PC and therefore lose their exclusivity. So, the appeal of consoles has been dwindling considerably like with your personal experience which, in turn, has had various effects on the industry and gaming trends.

First-party Nintendo games are the major outlier for being ported to other platforms, but I don't see Nintendo changing their practices anytime soon, if ever. I'm sure Nintendo's presence throughout the ninth generation with the Switch 2 will be as successful as it was with the Switch, but many people just aren't interested in the types of games they publish. Personally, I find it a shame that they merged their handheld and console efforts into one, but I suppose that sort of thing is bound to happen after the kind of fumble their first attempt to break ground in the eighth generation with the Wii U had. I'd love for a dedicated handheld market to return—right now, I only get that with the Playdate.

Quest to play and shortly review every major genesis game of all time


1. Golden Axe 3 - Beat it in one go because I enjoyed it so much. Radical. Excellent branching level design. Fair difficulty. Wildly better than the first. But not perfect.

2. Golden Axe 1 - Worst than RMV lines and tooth paste plus orange juice. Clunky and slow. Just unenjoyable to me.

3. Comix Zone - Had potential. Beautiful concept. Cool fluid fighting. But difficulty is done cheaply. You take damage for attacking. You take damage for opening doors. You get 1 life. One on par with Ninja Gaiden black. Yeah let this one rot and never be played again. Just silly.

4. Frogger - The best console port of Frogger of all time which is consensus among most frogger fans. It is as close to the arcade as you can get from home. Simple bliss.

5. Ecco the dolphin - One of the best nautical fish experiences you can have. Wierd how something as massive as the ocean has spawned so many lackluster games.  Ecco is fun and cute. Give the fish more games. I know ecco is a mammal. But fish need more games in general.

6. Ecco 2 - much of the same. Id say ecco 1 is prettier and easier. The little mini levels in ecco 2 are necessary and bad.

7. Altered beast - Fun. Simple straight foward level system. Massively hard but comes about it honestly unlike comix zone. Poweerr uuuupppp.  Iconic.

8. Michael Jackson moonwalker - Way better than it has any business of being. It's one of the iconic greats. His powers are fantastic. Level design is magical. And the 16 bit michael songs are exotic. Love it.

9. Sonic the hedgehog 1 - Rapid paced fun. Level design lends itself to be gorgeous and quick. Sonic is fun. And overall paved the way for sega. Must be respected.

10. Sonic the hedgehog 3 - Same except better. More options. Even better level design. Is this a pattern of 3s always being best? Lol.

11. NBA Jam Tournmanet edition -  Overhyped. It's ok but the cpu cheeses and the hit box for blocking and stealing is frustrating. But you can be Bill Clinton which is bonkers.

12. Shinobi III - Pretty cool. Ninja Gaiden meets castlevania. I havent tried shinobi 1 as a baseline. But 3 is pretty rad and the horse scenes are cool.

13. Sonic Spinball - A fun cute little sonic pinball game. It's actually really deep and varying. I also enjoy that you can control the trajectory of the sonic ball.


14. Columns - One of the "id rather be playing Tetris" games. Which sadly embodies 95 percent of every puzzle game ever made lol.  I just cant help but wish it had the simplicity and ease of motion as tetris. It doesn't. Its more like puyo puyo. Its ok. But kinda boring. And man the music is dull.

I didn't even try. I'm definitely going to have a wait and see attitude of how things go with it. The news that most third party games will be key card games and not game on card has me on the fence about getting one at all.
