I've been looking online more lately at Nintendo DS games as it is one of my all time favorite consoles to collect for. Not only was it the system I played most during the more important years of my development as a "gamer" and helped shape my taste in games, but it also just has an incredibly deep library of games. Platformers, sports games, action games, rhythm games, puzzle games, strategy games, and a very deep catalogue of JRPGs, it's got something for everyone. One thing I noticed is that prices on the system have climbed considerably since the last time I looked. Games I would recommend to everyone that were once $20-30 are now $50+. Even super common titles like New Super Mario Bros, which I had no problem finding in the $10-$15 range now goes for $20-$25. If someone started collecting for the system now, it would be a lot more expensive to get the same collection I built between the late 2000's to mid 2010's. So that's what brings me to this topic. When someone is just getting into collecting (or just starting a collection for a system) I always try and recommend a good spread of games they can get for cheap. So if you were shopping with this hypothetical person who is just getting into collecting, what games are you suggesting them to? You can choose the system in which this hypothetical person is collecting for, because not everyone has collected / played a lot of NDS. So if you want to build a $100 Xbox 360 collection or $100 PS1 collection go for it. To set some ground rules, let's keep the list at a total of $100. I feel that is a reasonable amount to spend when you first start collecting a new console. Also, in the spirit of getting the most bang for your buck in this starter collection and a good selection of different kinds of games, let's make sure we include: * A racing game * A 2D platformer / 2D Sidescroller * A RPG * An action game (shooter / 3rd person action / fighting * A puzzle / strategy * A wildcard game (any genre, something that didn't fit into the other listed genres or double dip in a genre) As an additional rule for my collection I've decided to go off of CiB only, because most people who collect NDS I feel collect CiB. Obviously it's not really doable for systems like GBA or SNES, so use your own discretion. Also use your own discretion as to if a game fits into the categories. I chose them because I wanted to focus on getting a nice spread of different style games, but they aren't perfect and you could easily just put like a bunch of JRPGs on the list lol Try to follow the spirit of challenge, but it's your list so do what you want lol For me, my $100 collection would be: * Mario Kart DS ($20) - TBH I had originally chosen a cheaper game, but I had $10 when I finished so I decided "what the hell". It's the best racing game on the DS I've played and totally worth the price. Every NDS collection neeeds a copy of this game, so it's a super safe pick and excellent bang for your buck. * Prince of Persia Fallen King ($9) - Had to save money somewhere for some other categories that I knew I wanted to have a bit more money for. Prince of Persia is fine though, and uses the unique design of the DS to provide a game you can't really experience anywhere else (it uses touch controls to move the character around, something not many consoles or handhelds are able to implement). It's often featured on hidden gem videos for the DS so it's a nice game to have in your collection even if there are some other 2D sidescrolling games on the DS I might normally suggest playing over this one. * Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume ($27) - Finding a really good RPG for cheap can be difficult. They tend to climb due to their (relatively) low sales and high collectability. I feel this is a super reasonable price for such a good SJRPG though. I honestly thought it would be double it's current price considering it is a fairly niche franchise that is well regarded in JRPG circles (making it highly collectible). Great SRPG to play on the NDS and one that will likely be a highlight in your collection even after you start collecting more on the system. * Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Destiny 2 ($14) - A solid 3D fighting game on DS. You don't need to know Naruto to get enjoyment out of it, but like any game in a well known franchise it probably helps. It's simple enough anyone can play it. Probably not deep enough for any hardcore fighting game fans, but for a casual fan its a good game to have in the collection. * Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day ($7)- Maybe it's just me but no NDS collection is complete without a copy of Brain Age. It was such a cultural touch stone at the time. Me and all my friends would compare our "brain ages" and riff on each other for having the brain of a 42 year old. I played a lot of this back in the day, and the included Sudoku puzzles were an added bonus. * Elite Beat Agents ($22)- One of the must play games on DS I feel. Crazy fun and addictive, and something that really hasn't been replicated since outside of pc game "Osu", which is actually based on this series (EBA is an American reimagining of the Osu! games which came out in Japan, featuring the same gameplay but Japanese characters and songs). It is one of my favorite rhythm games of all time. Total = $99 I got all my prices on pricecharting cause it was the easiest for me but you can use whatever site/app you want for your prices. Looking at my list I realize I could change it in so many ways. For example, the game I always suggest people play on DS is The World Ends With You as it is my favorite DS game, but costs like $50. But I could make a list with it on it if I wanted, I would just have to make some concessions in other parts of the list. Ultimately I decided I wanted to spread things a little more evenly so you get something really nice in each category. Anyways, for those who collect NDS what do you think of my list? And for those who have an hour to kill, drop your list for whichever retro system you like to collect. [/list] |

Cool thread idea! What's crazy is back when I started collecting in the late 2000s, $100 went A LONG way! I know that makes me sound like a boomer, but it's true. I'd bring about that much money with me to a flea market I used to live near back in 2010 and walk out with an entire backpack full of quality games, sometimes more. I picked up an Ice Blue N64 and about 20 good games for it for $50 one time. I imagine now that lot would have been worth easily over $800. Even when I did turn to eBay or game stores, prices were still pretty low, especially one some stuff now that is completely out of control, like Pokemon games and survival horror titles. I truly miss those days. I was originally going to pick the Dreamcast, but after trying to get a worthwhile bundle of games for under $100, I simply couldn't. The same goes for so many consoles where the prices have become unreal. I'll instead pick an easier console, the PS1 to do this for. A racing game - Crash Team Racing ($15) A 2D platformer / 2D Sidescroller - Mega Man X5 ($25) A RPG - Final Fantasy VIII ($20) An action game (shooter / 3rd person action / fighting - Tekken 3 ($20) A puzzle / strategy - Tetris Plus ($5) A wildcard game (any genre, something that didn't fit into the other listed genres or double dip in a genre) - Spyro the Dragon ($15) |

What an absolute brilliant idea for a game. I wish this would catch on. It's also radically nuanced to choose between my children it seems just picking the console alone lol. I feel I am a budget collector for the most part. I have no issue sapping max fun out of minimum spend so this will be a good time. Just for the sake of mistake, I don't have vgpc open in front of me so this is all priced from my general knowledge of the market. So if i'm wrong don't mind. I can correct later :) But since I have to pick one console for this person. What do I think is the easiest to pull put a golden lot for $100? CIB? From my experiences over the last decade or so. It's PS2 and that's very fun and easy to build gorgeous lineups for. It did climb a bit recently but I think I can still give us some gold! I have to rep the classic PS2. A titan of industry lol. A racing game - No contest Gran Turismo 4 for PS2. I could go Need for speed underground 2 but it costs twice as much and offers half the content at most. Gran Turismo 4 I believe is the perfect intro to sim racing to anyone casual. It offers a lot of variety in customizing. Fun licenses. Amazing soundtrack and the intro is just uber cool. It has hundreds of hours of content to explore and fun oddities like the tank car by Jay Leno [$10] A 2D platformer / 2D Sidescroller - Surpisingly a dry Genre on this console. And also where i'm going to have to spend all the money. Damn it lol. We might have to go Alien Hominid here? Its all I can think of. Maybe Viewtiful Joe is cheaper. Times like these I wish I chose super nintendo lol. But we can get by just fine on the classic tried and true Viewtiful Joe. Viewtiful Joe 2 to be precise. A blast of a game. I own 1 but prefer 2. It will eat our budget but im left no options. A RPG - I'm not sure it you accept action RPG or only turn based. But I am going to go with Kingdom Hearts 1 [PS2] It was between this and final fantasy X but Kingdom Hearts to me is a story that deeply formed my childhood. Blending Final Fantasy and Disney is like Baja Blast and Taco Bell joining forces to Nuke your tastebuds. It's OP IP. It's worlds are glorious. It's characters memorable. Another game that can hand you your ass (sephroth lol) or be easy for new comers to the genre. A fine balance. The worlds here are ambiance. Asmr almost. I love this game with all my heart. ($15] An action game (shooter / 3rd person action / fighting - Cheap and simple. Ratchet and clank up your arsonal for PS2. It's my personal favorite 3rd person shooter. A steady 9+ rated PS2 icon. Funny humor. Intense gun upgrading. So much fun to be had here. The franchise in general may only have 1 miss. It's incredible. [$15] A puzzle / strategy - my cheap pick and a true console icon. Super Bust A Move. A home console port of the arcade by the same name. It's simple. Entertianing and all you could want a puzzle game to be. A wildcard game (any genre, something that didn't fit into the other listed genres or double dip in a genre) - and here we have it. The one i'm most happy to share on the console and of a new genre. But Tony Hawk American Wasteland had such a slept on enganging story. It combined radical build elements, graffiti, a cool new kid in a strange city, ramones infused california punk heritage of the genre it comes from. I definitely would reccomend it. with VGPC Viewtiful Joe 2 - 29.37 TH American Wasteland - 15.68 Gran Turismo 4 - 14.98 Super Bust A Move - 8.12 Ratchet 3 - 15.38 (an absolute bargain) Kingdom Hearts - 13.75 Total - $97.28 That is a great begginers lot and intro to the console. I choose the more expensive viewiful Joe games solely because Alien Hominid and Contra shattered soldier are both insanely hard, brutal and unforgiving run and gun shooters that a newcomer or casual might dread. I think this lineup spreads the honey and I know there are many options with PS2 but I do love this list! I will say some games are cheaper than I imagined and some more. Gran Turismo for 15 dollars is wild to me. It had been a 5 dollar game for decades in my area. But it is probably the best of the series to most fans. If I was going multi console platformer could do Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country for the same price was 1 viewtiful Joe. Thats a 1 2 punch lol. |

CTR is a great racer. 100% should be in any PS1 collection. Personally if I made a PS1 list myself (who knows, maybe I'll give it a shot later or something) I might go with Gran Turismo 2 since I see it as a super important game on the system and I think would probably save a few $$, but CTR is by no means a game to pass up on PS1. Haven't played Mega Man outside of 1 and 2 but I hear the X games are all incredible so thats a solid choice it seems. Same thing with FF VIII, I'm currently on IV in my FF playthrough (VII is the only one on PS1 I played). Still a mainline FF for $20? Can't beat that value. Tekken 3 is an all time great, so nothing more to really say there. Tetris is a safe bet. Probably not my favorite version of Tetris but you can't go wrong with it when building a collection. And Spyro is one of the more nostalgic series on PS1 for me. I must have beaten it at least a dozen times as a kid. Though personally I would choose Spyro 2 or 3 over the original, but it wouldn't surprise me if there is a significant price difference between them so understandable if that's the case. Overall killer lineup. I think if someone picked these 6 games up as their first 6 games on the PS1 they would have the start to an insanely high quality collection. Thats a 1 2 punch lol. --- End quote --- NGL PS2 is a system I have not played much of. After PS1 I moved over to Gamecube where I remained a Nintendo kid for quite a while. I only really started exploring its library when I was an adult, and before I knew it I was heading overseas and my game collection had to be left behind. I doubt I've beaten 10 games on the system... I'll use your list as a reference as to what to try next though ^ ^ Gran Turismo 2 is one of my favorite games on PS1 though so I have no doubt I will love GT4. Kingdom Hearts has been a series of interest for me since I was in middle school and use to see it all the time in AMV's lol (For non-anime fans, an AMV is an edited video people used to make of anime where they would edit in all the coolest scenes backed with cool music. For some reason, Kingdom Hearts was one of the few games the AMV community would constantly make edits of too lol As a 12 year old seeing all the cool cutscenes being backed by Linkin Park made me want to play them so bad lol) Overall looking at your list though PS2 seems like such a bargain system. Ratchet for less than $20 seems like an incredible deal. Actually almost everything you listed was under $20. PS2 is clearly a console I should give more attention. |

I remember those days fondly. you can have anything at 5$ a pop except truxton that one is 10. good stuff or just cheap ass sets in general if you are to consider cart only all retro system can be pretty affordable barring neo geo stuff also Definitely try to go outside of just ebay only if you want better prices. In terms of what consoles I'd like to collect for anything non atari or older consoles, not seriously above wii era or pc according to VGPC and cib only if I where to make a list A racing game F zero GX gamecube japan 36,37 A 2D platformer / 2D Sidescroller Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure ds pal 9,34 A RPG Xenoblade Chronicles PAL Wii 17,61 An action game (shooter / 3rd person action / fighting Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection ps3 19,53$ A puzzle / strategy Professor Layton and Pandora's Box ds pal 5$ A wildcard game Professor Mario Strikers Charged Football wii pal 7,96$ 95,81 I think I've done decently 5 all time classics in a single bundle F zero gx one of the best racing games of all time, xenoblade 1 arguably the greatest rpg of all time, charged football greates nintendo spinoff of all time and wii version has the best presentation of em all and shadow Of the collosus + ico combo, the kinda oddball games you go to the ps2 for. |
