EDIT: Odd, looking up at jobocon's post, Mirror of Fate is supposed to be a direct sequel as well... but if that's the case, why doesn't it get the 2, or a 3 if it comes after the new console game? Crazy developers... 
Don't waste your time trying to wrap your head around it, game titles are starting to make about as much sense as movie titles.
