I forgot about Ultima. Yeah, that one takes it. In before Dragon Warrior was.

I only played the NES entries of that series, though. I think the thing I liked the most about it is that you could battle anyone, NPCs included. It was like the Grand Theft Auto of old-school JRPGs. I'd level-up my party just so I could take a crack at the king, lol.

Most of the earliest RPGs - Ultimate, Wizardry, Dragon Quest, etc. - were drawing their inspiration directly from pen & paper RPGs.  So I'm not entirely sure how influential they were on one another.

Dragon's Lair should probably have a spot on the list.  You could debate whether it's contributions & influences were good or bad, but it's pretty hard to deny that it permanently left it's mark on gaming.

became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the
desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

Pretty crap no phantasy star, castlevania, final fantasy, space harrier, or golden axe.

If they were going to name an RPG, I think it should go to Dragon Warrior, anyways. It did a lot of what Final Fantasy did, before Final Fantasy.
Just came to me how could I have forgotten. Contra enough said.

Yeah but dragon warrior didn't do as well as final fantasy internationally. When people talk jrpgs they will always mention final fantasy unless they live in japan.

No doubt Final Fantasy was popular. But you can't still can't take the innovation of modern JRPGs from Dragon Warrior.

I still have fond memories of slacking off in class playing Tetris on my Ti-83, then TI-89 in high school and university. I hate to think what effect it must have had on my GPA!
