1988. or maybe 1995. It had the highest quality SNES/Genesis games that would ever be made, and 32bit gen start with the consoles that seemed to have lived and died that same year showed some dream like magic I cant quite verbalize into words. But something that'll never be seen again. Just the fact that the Atari Jaguar/jag cd/ sega 32x was still active has to be somewhat amusing at least to me. Kind of haunting even these dead/failed 32 bit consoles that their power never scratched the surface of what was possible. The what if question is always a tragic one. 1995 kind of immortalizes them to me with hope and what lies over the hills in gaming that anything was possible.

Of course the reality was a lot darker in the end. It was the year the beast that was mainstream really began to grab hold and corner the gaming world, and laid the ground work for the 3 definitive juggernauts (the 80s and 90s felt like the world wars in gaming while with the 3 gaints now it's just a proxy war with hardware not that radically different, and not loyalties to a brand), and the end of bit wars, and niche hardware.
or maybe it was 2004. Halo 2, GTA, Half life 2,  ninja gaiden, total war, far cry, thief, DOOM 3 and WoW.

It's too difficult to pinpoint one year, but I will say that my favorite era of gaming for games, hardware and the way the industry as a whole was, was between 1994 and 2004.

I think 2000 was my favorite year  :).  Marvel vs Capcom 2 was released, banjo tooie,  the playstation 2 was released.  Majora's mask.  Kirby crystal shards, tekken tag among others.  I remember being a kid and being so overwhelmed with all the releases. It was the prime of gaming for me.
