Handheld RPG Suggestions
« on: December 26, 2016, 10:32:50 am »
So I need more games to keep me busy for a while on the handheld front. I think I've about exhausted my normal RPG selections. I need something more.

I own a GBA-SP and 3DS XL, so I have the entire Nintendo handheld library open to me.

I usually like a good action-RPG the most (like Crystalis, Castle(metroid)vania, or Zelda 2), I also like traditional turn-based RPGs (Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, etc.), or a hack-n-slash RPG (like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or Neverwinter Nights).

I DO NOT like strategy-RPGs (like Shining Soul or FF Tactics), or Pokemon catch-em all type stuff, I don't like the super-cutified stuff either (you know, like the stuff that looks like it came from Precious Moments or a Kirby game).

In most cases, I also usually already have the console version of a port.

Let's see here, here's a list of what I already have:
-Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
-Castlevania (all the handheld entries)
-Chrono Trigger
-Dragon Quest 1-10
-Defender of Oasis
-Excave
-Final Fantasy 1, 2, 5, & 6
-Final Fantasy Adventure
-Golden Sun 1-3
-Heroes of Ruin
-Legend of Zelda (all the handheld entries)
-Lufia: The Ruins of Lore
-Radiant Historia
-Shining Soul 1 & 2
-Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
-Sword of Mana

Thanks for any help. I have a lot of down-time at my work where I'm just staring at a clock. So I need something to keep me busy for a while.  :)

For 3DS, I have to recommend the SMT series.  You can start with IV and then play Apocalypse, or just skip right to Apocalypse, which is a much better game.  It's a traditional turn based rpg that puts a strong emphasis on exploiting weaknesses in battle and properly preparing for each fight. (Luckily it has a save anywhere feature for those times you do get caught off guard and lose)
You raise demons to fight alongside you but it feels radically different from Pokémon.  The series has dozens of entries spanning previous console generations but if you are looking for something specific to 3ds, Apocalypse is that game.

For GBASP, since you liked SMRPG, have you played Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga? that is my favorite rpg on the system.

^ Eh, if there's nothing else that looks better I'll check out the Mario & Luigi games. But Super Mario RPG wasn't my favorite RPG, a little too goofy for my normal tastes.

Final Fantasy Explorers
Persona Q: Shadow of the labyrinth
Bravely Second
Fire Emblem Fates

Some of the best for 3ds :D. If the Mario and Luigi series doesn't apply to the super cutified category then also Mario and Luigi dream team and Mario and luigi partners in time. But i would say Persona Q is a very amazing game. Probably my favorite in the line up.  :)

If you can get a cheap PSP/Vita, I wonder if you'd enjoy the Ys games. ..

You might like the mystery dungeon games (Pokemon, Izuna the Unemployed Ninja, Shiren the Wanderer, etc.). With the randomly generated dungeons, they've got both good replay-ability as well as a good pick-up-and-play aspect. The pokemon ones might be a little too cutsey for your tastes (and they are easier compared to the others), but they're still good games.

If Super Mario RPG is too goofy for you, then you'll likely hate Superstar Saga.  Gameplay is super solid but story/dialogue/characters are all bizarre and over the top.

Have you played the Etrian Odyssey series?  That's a great turn-based series.  Hard as hell but fun.  IV is a good one to start out with.

If you like the Tales series- Tales of the Abyss was ported to 3DS
