It's That Time of Year...What Are Your Favorite Horror Movies?
« on: October 19, 2018, 02:55:17 am »
I thought this would be fun for Halloween to see people's reactions and see what their lists are.

My Top 30 Horror Movies:

1.   Day of the Dead (1985)
2.   Dawn of the Dead (1978)
3.   A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors (Yep, I liked it more than the original.)
4.   A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
5.   Predator (1987) (Counts as sci-fi, counts as action, AND counts as horror. That's the beauty of it)
6.   The Monster Squad
7.   The Lost Boys
8.   A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
9.   Event Horizon (Scariest space movie you will ever see)
10.   Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
11.   Friday the 13th Part 3-D
12.   Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter
13.   Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
14.   The People Under the Stairs
15.   30 Days of Night
16.   Pandorum (The spiritual successor to Event Horizon)
17.   Fright Night (1985)
18.   Cabin Fever (2002)
19.   Poltergeist (1982)
20.   Final Destination (2000)
21.   Ravenous
22.   Nightmare City
23.   Shaun of the Dead
24.   28 Days Later
25.   The Faculty
26.   Underworld
27.   The Ring
28.   Street Trash
29.   Cloverfield
30.   The Prowler/Tourist Trap/House of Wax (2005) (because I can't decide the last spot)

Don't watch a ton of horror movies, so it's mostly just a bunch of zombie films for much of it.

In no particular order...

-Dawn of the Dead (Original & Remake)
-Day of the Dead
-28 Days/Weeks Later
-Predator
-Alien/Aliens (If Predator counts, this counts)
-Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness
-Zombieland
-Shaun of the Dead
-The Thing
-Train to Busan
-10 Cloverfield Lane

Probably will think of a few more I'd consider my favorites eventually.  Actually trying to think of some stuff to rewatch for the season that I haven't seen in a long time like Dawn of the Dead 2004, Cloverfield, and maybe one or two others after I finish my run of Terminator movies.

Horror movies are one of those things that I wish I was more into, but sadly I find that most of them that I thought I'd absolutely love I just thought were okay at best.

Not counting films like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland cause they're not horror:

- Ju-On: The Curse 1 & 2, Ju-On: The Grudge 1 & 2, Beginning of the End
- Ring & Ring 0
- Saw 1 - 3
- I don't consider them horror but other people do, Let The Right One In & Let Me In
- Alien/Aliens/Alien 3
- The Shining
- Hellraiser 1

I feel like I might be forgetting some.

Not counting films like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland cause they're not horror:

Comedy works in a lot of horror. Or else we wouldn't have gems like Street Trash, Return of the Living Dead, and half of the Nightmare on Elm Streets. Having a dark sense of humor helps, of course.

Sure, but I don't think a film can be simultaneously horror and comedy, at least not successfully. A comedy focuses on making the viewer laugh, a horror focuses on scaring the viewer. It's hard to make both a focus and be successful, I'm not aware of any films that are both funny and scary, if they are then they're probably just funny and not scary. Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland aren't trying to scare the viewer, they're trying to make them laugh, so they're comedies. Something being both a comedy and a genuine horror is like being both hot and cold.

Evil Dead 2 I think fits pretty close being some genuine horror while also having outright slapstick comedy in it.

Shaun of the Dead, too. It's a zombie movie that would fit right into George Romero's zombie universe. It just happens to be funny, too. It doesn't really make fun of the genre, like Zombieland does.

The Nightmare on Elm Street sequels certainly were trying to scare their audience, but Freddy always had one-liners that made you laugh, "Welcome to primetime, bitch!"

Comedy and horror go hand-in-hand. It works perfectly when you have a tense moment that turns your stomach, and then a little humor to bring some relief.

I have kind of a love-hate relationship with horror movies. My older brother watched them a ton when we were kids and they scared the bejeezus out of me. But I've grown to like them as I've gotten older.

Some of my favorites are:

Army of Darkness
House (1986)
Stephen King's Creepshow
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween (the original) [I just saw this for the first time recently on AMC and really liked it for its simplicity]

I also want to include The Terminator because its one of my favorite movies of all time and I think it has some scenes in it that are akin to those in a slasher film.

I picked a bunch out of my collection. I mostly get freaked out by the unexplained or supernatural movies, but got a little of everything here...including the comical horror. My favorite comical moment in a horror movie is on Jason X when Sgt. Brodsky says "It's going to take more than a poke in the ribs to put down this old dog. Yeah, that oughta do it." LOL, gets me every time.

The Conjuring
Creepshow 1 & 2
Critters
Dawn of the Dead 2004
Dream Catcher
Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness
The Exorcist
Fallen
Final Destination
1408
Friday the 13th 2, 7, 8 and Jason X
Ghost Ship
The Grudge
Halloween 1, 2, H2O, IV
Hellraiser
Hostel
House of 1000 Corpses
Identity
Insidious
It Follows
Killer Klowns from Outer space
Mirrors
The Mist
Nightmare on Elm Street 3, 1, 4
Oculus
The Omen
Orphan
The Others
Poltergeist
The Prophecy
Pulse
Return of the Living Dead
The Ring
The Ruins
Saw
The Shining
Shocker
Sinister
The Strangers
Stir of Echoes
The Stuff
Thirteen Ghosts
30 Days of Night
28 days Later
The Uninvited
Vanishing on 7th Street
What Lies Beneath

Oh man, I feel like there is such a fine line between horror movies that I enjoy and ones that I would consider favorites.  There are plenty that I *like* but I also recognize them as generally bad movies, so it can be tough to reconcile the two, but I'll give it a shot.

The Fog
The Thing
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
Alien
Scream
It Follows
Shaun of the Dead
The Witch
The Cabin in the Woods
The Descent
Trick 'R Treat
Hereditary
- Best film I've seen this year, let alone best horror.
