The Game Awards 2018
« on: November 14, 2018, 04:27:22 am »
Should be a good show this year for reveals, especially with no Playstation Experience around, so figured why not pick our favorites from the nominees? I find it a little strange that some categories have no challengers though.  Also this is about YOUR personal choice for the category, not who will likely win...Also you can skip categories if you got nothing invested in it like I'm not playing any of the games from "Best Ongoing Game".

https://thegameawards.com/awards/

Game of the Year: Monster Hunter World - While other games have a better all around experience, I really loved Monster Hunter World.  I kept playing it long after I "beat it" and I have something like 200 hours in the game.  Normally grindy stuff can kill things for me, but if done right, I can get into it and I'm practically a casual at the game with how invested people get into Monster Hunter lol Also, wow, I just realized that Celeste is here.  Not to fault it for anything, but it's going up against some real juggernauts lol
Best Game Direction: God of War
Best Narrative: Spider-Man
Best Art Direction: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best Score: The Messenger - I am cheating on this, but I loved this OST and I'd much rather listen to it than anything else they listed.
Best Audio Design: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best Performance: This is legit tough to pick, not sure...Either Christopher Judge as Kratos or Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker. Roger Clark is real good as Arthur Morgan too...dang...I don't know.
Best Indie Game: The Messenger
Best Action Game - Far Cry 5
Best Action/Adventure Game - Spider-Man
Best Fighting Game - Dragon Ball FighterZ
Best Debut Indie Game - The Messenger

So many big titles this year. It should be a bit of nail-biter between God of War, Spider-Man, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Feel like a fool doing this since I've had no chance to play them (well, except Octopath which definitely won't be winning anything from me) but here it goes anyway...

GotY: Red Dead 2
Best Ongoing: None/Kill em all
Best Game Direction: God of War
Best Narrative: God of War
Best Art Direction: Okay fine... Octopath. Though NnK2 blows it out of the water and KH3 and Yoshi both look liked they'd have blown it out of the water too if they had released this year.
Best Sound Track: None
Best Audio Design: None. Also, shill category.
Best Performance: None
GfI: None
Best Indie: Return of the Obra Dinn
Best Mobile: None
Best VR: None
Best Action Game: Far Cry 5
Best Action Adventure: Red Dead 2
Best RPG: Dragon Quest XI
Best Fighting Game: None
Best Family Game: Overcooked 2 (No Kirby or Crash? Not that I would have voted for them over OC2 but still...)
Best Strategy: None
Best Sports/Racing: None (where's The Show? oh well...)
Best Multiplayer: Monster Hunter: World
Best Student Game: None

And just for fun... a few more awards given just from myself:

Best Game All Years: Civilization 3
Best 2017 Game Played This Year: Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Best Game to Not Get Nominated at All: XC2 Torna, The Golden Country
Game that Shouldn't Win Anything: Sea of Thieves
Game of the Year 2018: SSBU
Best Game to Watch Other People Play: Super Mario Maker
Console of the Year: PS4, its your year this time, Sony Bros.

Best Audio Design: None. Also, shill category.
What?  Audio Design is probably the most important aspects of making a game "believable" and one of the most difficult categories to choose this year.

Game of the Year: God of War
Best Ongoing:  No opinion.
Best Game Direction: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best Narrative: God of War
Best Art Direction: Octopath Traveler
Best Soundtrack: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best Audio Design: Red Dead Redemption 2
Best Performance: God of War
Game for Impact: Celeste
Best Indie: Celeste
Best Mobile: No opinion.
Best VR: No opinion.
Best Action Game: Dead Cells
Best Action Adventure: God of War
Best RPG: Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
Best Fighting Game: Dragon Ball FigherZ
Best Family Game: Super Mario Party
Best Strategy Game: Into the Breach
Best Debut Indie Game: The Messenger

and no opinion on the rest either.

There are fewer "big" titles than last year, but the race is much tighter in almost every category.

The category is specifically sponsored by Dolby, I doubt it would be there otherwise.
