39] Demon's Souls (PS3)

Beaten about 20 minutes before midnight on 31 October, quite the halloween game, managed to make it two games beaten this month rather than one, to top it off completing this now and Bloodborne back in March means I've now beaten all of the Soulsbourne games. A long time coming, pleased to have started this one from scratch and get through it. Have to accept that, short of chewing through a bunch of games which can be beaten in one sitting, I'm definitely not going to make it this year either. Still, the challenge is certainly focusing me on getting through some games, and after a massive clear-out this year I'm not so swamped but unplayed/unbeaten games.

That would be the 'Musou' series (IE Dynasty Warriors and its brethren).

DW 2
DW 3
DW 4
DW 5
DW 5 Empires
DW 7
DW 7 Empires
DW 8
DW 8 Empires
Samurai Warriors 2
Samurai Warriors 4
Samurai Warriors 4 II
Warriors Orochi
Warriors Orochi 2
Warriors Orochi 3

It was a favourite series of mine, I'm still interested in the likes of Warriors Orochi 4, but the series peaked extremely early with Dynasty Warriors 3, the developers have buggered about with a few things like the combo system (hence why DW 6 isn't here) and an open world style (ditto DW 9). DW 3's massive roster of enemy types, huge battlefields and things like customisable bodyguards were amazing at the time it was released. Instead of figuring out how to make the battlefields more dynamic (like allowing you to bolster allied officers' forces with some of your own units so they're not constantly needing rescuing, whereas you have less support, for instance), instead it's the same tired formula but with hardly any allied soldiers on the battlefield and dispoable enemy fodder. In DW8 you could sweep up non-officer enemies like you were brushing the step, there was even a button to mash for that attack. Nah, it's lost its way, badly.

A Switch, I've been fine without one due to a huge backlog of games to play through, but I picked up my first game for it a few weeks ago and I'm ready to start picking up games and a system at some point, we'll see how my game shop credit works out.

That's fine, I won't be looking to get one before 2022, there'll be plenty of PS4 games (and others) to keep me amused. I don't see the big hurry, frankly.

General / Re: Game collecting addiction
« on: October 09, 2019, 06:53:53 pm »
Have you ever been addicted to game collecting to a point where it was unhealthy, or financially reckless? How overboard did you go, and how were you able to stop yourself?

Lately I've been on somewhat of a game collecting binge. I've been buying up games left and right without much restraint. Granted they are all games that I think I really want to have, but I'm simply buying so many of them so fast it's alarming. I've spent hundreds and hundreds in the past few weeks. Subconsciously I think I'm trying to make up for the year or so I didn't buy any games. I'm just so tired of not having certain titles, and just thinking "some day". I'd rather have them all now.

Like most things in life, it's never that clean cut. I've never gone so far as to collect in an unhealthy way, but there have been periods when I've been buying up titles which are cheap because the older generation of consoles is getting shown the door at retailers, or when a system's old enough for all of its prices to drop before they inevitable shoot back up within a year or two.

Your priorities in collecting and taste in games can change, dramatically, the reality of what is available now and what was available five years ago are different.

I bought a lot of games in the .. whichever generation it was that contained the PS2/XBOX/GC. Anything that was non-sport/racing for the GC, over time, since it was a system I prioritized collecting for, anything PS2 exclusive that was Japanese/quirky/obscure, over time, as well as any non-racing/sports for the OG XBOX since they were pence when the game shops were clearing them (GC was already dried up at that point, PS2 games remained relevant for years afterwards). Did something very similar for the 360 (main console of that era) and picked up PS3 exclusives (much smaller collection, PS3 was garbage for exclusives in comparison with the PS1/PS2). I thought that was 'it', the 360 would be my mainstay. I was wrong.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 didn't have a lot of variety in games, so many 'wander around 3D landscapes hitting/shooting things and opening doors' kind of games. This became extremely apparent when the PS4 picked up steam - so many different quirky and niche titles. The 360/PS3 do what they do well, but there's no need to keep loads of identikit games, so I've cleared stacks of them out and just kept the cream, ditto with the previous generation. Over the past day or two it's dawned that I'm really not bothered about the Vita (nice system, not enough exclusives, of those too many of them are 2/5 in quality) or the PSP (some nice exclusives, but also a lot of blocky garbage which has been done better on the PS2). So they're going altogether.

I'm not buying half as many games now, haven't the cash with a little one to feed and clothe, but I'm actually playing the good ones that I've kept from previous generations, bottoming my PS4 collection in terms of beating the games and enjoying the cheap-as-chips PC games from the past couple of decades floating around charity shops etc. My priorities have changed, but my interest in maintaining my games collection has not, just different types of games and more focus on the best of each type.

Currently seem to be close to the endgame on Luigi's Mansion 2 (3DS), getting a good way through Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters on the PS2 and I've finally kind-of figured out how to play Ace of Seafood on the PS4, currently upgrading my lionfish posse into a group of puffer fish and looking to upgrade a leopard seal as the big-hitter.

Thank you Oldgamerz, that's the kind of site I'm looking for - maybe bigger, but the postage cost to Europe is much lower than I've seen quoted from American retailers which confirms my suspicions.

Hi guys, I'm basically looking for a Canadian online shop which will ship to Europe, specifically to buy North American casual PC games (so older titles, mainly from the noughties) on physical disc. Shipping from the United States seems to be stuck at around $15 an item, since the games I'm looking for are often less than five bucks new, there's no way I'm paying that kind of shipping cost. Canadian delivery seems much more cost effective.

That said, I'm not looking for an online marketplace like Amazon or Ebay, I'm hoping there's some kind of online store which has a large back-catalogue of items cheap. Any ideas?

I can give you 10 of my faves, not even going to attempt to rank them, the list probably changes all the time too.

*BioShock/BioShock 2 (count as one, always).
*Age of Empires III
*Diablo II
*Chaos Legion
*Haunting Ground
*This War of Mine (PS4)
*Mount & Blade: Warband (PS4)
*Dynasty Warriors 3/Samurai Warriors 2/Warriors Orochi 1/2 (favourite 'Musou' games, little point in separating them).
*Katamari series
*Resident Evil 4

The PS3 Katamari game (Katamari Forever?), had to return to something light and familiar after trying so many new-to-me games and having to stop and get rid of them because I don't like them. Coupled with that, I'm currently midway through what I'm calling my 'final kill list' - using Youtube to look at gameplay footage of (most) of the games in my collection which are untried. There's so many duds, games in genres I used to like but no longer do or ones which I have something similar but better. It'll be good to get this process finished at last, focus will then be on actually enjoying the collection and slowly picking up games which more resemble my playing preferences.

Bad- I just spent 110 dollars on a camera I didn't need. And lived in Parnoia for a week over nothing lol.

I believe quite the opposite, since you've mentally 'gone there', failing to act on it would just have been a constant gnawing on your back-brain. You can shore up your home security and move on from it now.

31) Dragon Quest Builders 2 (PS4)

Well.. bloody hell. That took as much time to plough through as a full-fat turn based RPG from back in the day, there's just so much to it. I unexpectedly got a little emotified at the ending too *waves hands under eyes* , didn't see that coming. I've read a few reviews (silly me), which suggested it's too drawn-out, and must admit a few sections do overstay their welcome, but the complete package is a dream - the make-it-yourself area is now integral to the game, rather than hived-off like in the original, which is all the better, there's also separate areas to explore to gather materials and recruit new folk. I'm just really impressed by it.

It's also interesting to note it was (at least partially) developed by Omega Force, the Koei Tecmo developer which churns out Dynasty Warriors etc. games - perhaps that's why DW9 was an open world game - trying out for this one, or influenced by this one's creation? Just a pity they keep messing around with the DW formula without ever nailing it.

I'm not a fan of the motion controls, but the Wii has been and will continue to be a cherished system for me, there's so many first-party and third-party games for it that are fun to play. There's a huge amount of shovelware for it, but then the supermarket's full of food I don't like, I just don't put it in my basket.

Modern Video Games / Re: Are Steelbook Editions Getting Too Expensive?
« on: August 16, 2019, 07:08:33 am »
I was thinking what most of the folks think here have already said, don't see the fascination in the first place, let alone paying extra for them. I mean, some of the artwork is gorgeous, but the steelbooks themselves either get scratched and are ruined, or come with those plastic slipcases which seem a lot more prone to scratching than the standard plastic you get on game cases. I've spent god knows how many years replacing game cases to get them looking spangly, so card or any other material that can't be replaced as outer packaging makes me grind my teeth. It doesn't help that, as you point out, publishers seem to think that limited edition steelbooks aren't just nice to look at, they're 'must have' and add value.
