I figured that I might as well make a public to-do list so you guys can see what updates and additions we have planned. I'll be adding and editing this as things come up.
- Custom user lists - this will allow users to create custom lists within their collections
- Server move
- Add sub-genres (finally!)
Add alt-title field to all items- Allow for larger images
- Consolidate collection badges
- Add forum activity badges
- Add submission badges
- Fix bugs on stats page
- Fix recently added on stats page
- Make sure that private notes are actually private
- Modify item description field to something else so it gets used properly
- Android App update + mobile site
- "Add to wishlist" button at the bottom of search results and browse pages.
- Clean up developers and publishers
- Allow for multiple developers and publishers
Edit collection info from the game listing page- Update stats page to include user submissions and edits
- Updated Advanced Search page with more filters
Compare collections- View collection/games by alpha

It's OFFICIAL! haha
-
The myths were true :o
(Make front page something other than a login page?)
-
- Modify item description field to something else so it gets used properly
Also, THIS.
-
Lets not forget the Android App :P

(Make front page something other than a login page?)
I like this idea. When I first found this site all I wanted to do was to see what someone's collection looked like. Even after creating an account, I still hadn't found out. I decided to come back after 2 months and add my collection. Currently, this still remains a mystery... maybe.

finally!
Also, to clarify, I wasn't looking for 2 months, rather I was unsuccessful after creating an account, but I still decided to come back after two months and add my own collection.
-
Click on "view collection" in the forums over someones post.
Also if you click on a game, you can view who has the game in their collection, click on their name and go to their collection.
-
Currently, this still remains a mystery... maybe.
I was kidding when I said this, and I thought @scott was just playing along. Sorry for the confusion, but nonetheless thanks for the help.
-
Oh, I was totally playing along, haha.
-
Updated with new dev and pub issues.
-
Updated with items completed since server outage and added new Image size update.
-
trade list has to be restarted? :/
-
Yep, that got decimated, unfortunately. D:
-
Fortunately I didn't lose any of the actual code so I simply need to update the database to give people access to it. I'll be doing that tonight or tomorrow. You'll see a news post about it. :)
-
How about adding linebreaks to descriptions and publisher blurbs?
-

I concur.
-
@foxhack, @scott - Linebreaks are now allowed. Let me know if this causes any issues.
-
I'd also like to bump this thread and get some more ideas rollings. Obviously I have a good sized list up there but I'd like to know what everyone thinks should be a priority so I can spend time on the features you all want.
-
Looks like it's working just fine.
-
How about better profiles? All they're really used for now are finding posts/discussions and going to their collections. I don't have any specific ideas, but I'm sure it can't be hard to come up with some.. it's not high up on the priority list either. Just a suggestion I came up with.

That's a good idea. The stuff in the profile isn't of much use so far... just activity logs and such. A place to show our most recent adds to our collection, gamertag info, collection photos, etc. would be awesome!
-
Fancy profile pages could be fun. I think they need to be simple though. There are so many times I visit websites and i am turned off by a cluttered profile page. VGCollect is simple, that's it's charm IMO
-
Ideas for profiles:
Homepage, Steam / XBox / PSN / Wii / whatever profile links (hidden if desired)
External links (homepage, gallery, youtube, ebay, etc.)
-
Right now, my profile says that "rachel changed his profile picture." Oh no! O___O
-

Heh, yeah, I noticed the gender issue there a while back but thought I'd let it go for the time being X)

How about adding thumbnail pics to the android app like the site? I like to browse my collection with them!
-
@jeffgames This is something I really want to add to the app too. I'm building this out as i learn Android development so as you'll notice...updates come slowly...
-
No sweat. I like what I see so far! Great work!
-
I have a simple request.. Is there a way to make wishlists exportable as well? I usually like to do up a little wishlist with average prices on ebay in an excel list for local shopping comparisons.
-
Definitely. I'll get this added sometime this week.
-
@epicede I've added this feature to the bottom of the settings page.
-
I updated/stickied/added a few items to the list.
-
Nice to see an official list. Thanks matt. I'm sure you probably already know but the features i'd like to see more than anything are:
- View collection/games by alpha
- mobile site
- developers group
Keep up the good work.

Hey Bugs!
Thanks for the suggestions.
1. coming really soon
2. http://mobile.vgcollect.com just went live last week.
3. hmm. all development at this point is internal although I do have an API that I'm working. May open that up. Not sure yet.
-
Whoops. I knew you said you were working on the mobile version. I havn't checked the forum in a while. I must of missed that news. As always, great work here.

Not sure if others would agree, but I think hardware and games would be better together in a category would be better for organization of games and equipment. Here are examples.
NES- Hardware
Games
Rather then
NES hardware
Sega Hardware
NES Games
Sega Games.
Or
Nintendo -Hardware -Nintendo
-Super Nintendo
-Nintendo 64
-Games -Nintendo
-Super Nintendo
-Nintendo 64
Just my two cents. Anyways this is my first post... So, thanks for the site. It's great! I tell people about it whenever i can.
-
Batch edit so I don't have to click on every game individually to add in details like Case/Box, Manual, notes, etc.
-
I'd like for multicarts and homebrew games to be on their own section. Like:
NES [ BR] (space because it'll break otherwise)
NES [CA]
NES [EU]
NES [Homebrew]
NES [US]
Same goes for all systems. I hate browsing through the list and seeing "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "1000 in 1" on the list.
Also, you know what else would be neat? The ability to select a random game in the entire database, select a random game from a specific console in the database, select a random game from a collection, and select a random game from a specific console in a collection. Because when I can't think of a game to play, I'd like to be able to pick one at random.

New server has been purchased! I spent all last night setting up things and testing out the environment. We are probably going to do the move next week.

Well, Hell - there's just no denying it, Matt...you obviously dedicate yourself to putting a *TON* of time, effort, work, and care & improvements/up-grades to this site...you've (just in the relatively short amount of time that I've been here) done plenty of things to make/keep the site accessible; while, at the same time, continuously doing things to better this site.
I think that it's important enough to say...and, that it's also important enough for you to hear that; *IMO* -
one of the things that I like the most about this site is how in-touch you (and the other 'helpers'/'staff'/"admins") here are to the rest of the community at large.
I'm talking about how easy it is to not only *Contact* all of you guys (shit, you can do this at pretty much any & all sites), but, *SO VERY, VERY MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY*...To be able to count-on & expect to consistently receive the replies & answers to our questions :)
Also, well-worth stating, is the excellent job that all of you do concerning making the over-all tone & feel of this site one of "The staff here are community members just like the rest of us" vs. (the tone & feel that I get from the majority of the other gaming-related sites out there) of either A)."There's the *Staff*, and then, there's the "rest" of the community, or, even worse (yet, sadly, not at all uncommon):
B)."There's the Community *VERSUS* The Staff...
I dunno...I guess that I was just feeling that a bit of recognition, acknowledgement & appreciation for the results of the work & efforts you all put into the site were in order 8)
Regarding the changing of the servers...
How will the change/affect us as individual users here *AND*, what (if anything) will switching to this new server change and/or improve for the site as a whole?

I concur on the love from disgaeniac!
*SPREAD-THE-LOVE*, I say, I say!!!
-
Well Disgaeniac,
Thanks to that post, I am going to try to be around a lot more often that I have been in the last few weeks. I've been busy with other things and sorely lacking in my attention to the site. But the amount of kind words in your post has made me realize how much I've neglected my duties over here and from now on I'll be making sure to keep up on everything I need to be.... right after...
-
aww gosh...you guys are making me blush!
One of my main goals when creating this site was to keep is community focused so I am glad that it is working! I try to be as transparent as possible with a goings-ons whether it be a new feature or a decision, I rely on you all to help guide us.
I've had a CRAZY busy summer and haven't been giving the site as much attention as I'd like. Now that autumn has arrived, you can expect a lot of movement during the cold months.
As far as the server switch, at first you won't notice much. We'll most likely have some scheduled downtime within the next few weeks. This won't be anything major and hopefully most users won't even notice. We've basically outgrown our existing hosting in many ways. We are now switching over to a virtual private server, that is unmanaged so I can do whatever I want with it. The first major update will most likely be an overhaul to the search engine. We are limited on this server since it is shared. The new server will instantly give us 100% freedom.
The next major update is mostly behind the scenes. I'm in the process of porting the code over to a PHP framework. Everything we are running now is custom with very little structure. Porting things over to this framework will allow us to have much cleaner code on the backend as well as speed up development for future add ons.
Man...I've got so much planned haha.
Thanks again for the kind words. I'm even more thankful for all of you who actually put work into making this a community. We couldn't do this without you!

I've been slacking a bit in my duties as well (especially cleaning up duplicates). I've had a lot of stuff to deal with in my personal life lately. I'll try and be around a lot more too.
-
I agree with disgaeniac, I am not here for long but I noticed that you guys really care for your members.
Thanks for making all this possible and keep up the good work!

Submission badges would be cool. I wondered why I get a badge for an edit but not a submission.
-
Submission badges would be cool. I wondered why I get a badge for an edit but not a submission.
Could submission badges incentivize bad submissions? I say this only because there are a lot of random hacked games and duplicate listings as is.
-
Not sure.
Do duped item submissions get deducted from a person's total submissions when they're merged?
-
Not sure.

At this time they do not but this is something we'll fix when we launch the new site. I'll run some queries to audit all the totals and update all accounts.
-
Will the new site give us developers some fun or is that a future todo after the new site has been stable for a while? There's so many ideas and implementations that I think a lot of users could benefit from. If you had some sort of "plugin" feature where users could pick and choose what features to add then you could keep the basics simple. Would be pretty easy to implement, let me know if you need help with that.
-
I'm actually surprised that submissions are blindly allowed. Oh the other collection site I use, while it lets you add a submitted item into the collection, the submission must be approved by a moderator before it actually counts.
-
Having been on various sites that are 100% moderated, it's rare for it to work well unless there are a large number of active moderators, and even then, there's no guarantee. The trade off is usually that only one or two moderators really keep on top of things, who then place their own style preferences over any written guidelines, and in most cases, things wind up perpetually backlogged, and the site falls into an outdated mess.
DVD Spot (which is sadly gone) and Film Aficionado are the only sites where things have worked out OK, but on the same token, it seems like a lot of people are less inclined to contribute because the requirements for adding something are a bit laborious. Others, like RPGGeek, are an absolute mess - I've had some stuff pending waiting to be approved/denied for probably a year, and I eventually just gave up.
I think it's one of those "go that route only if you have to" sort of things, and personally, prefer the open, collaborative approach. Apart from the duplicates and occasional typo, we've got a pretty good community of submitters, and tend to police ourselves rather well, imo.
-
I'm only familiar with two VGM sites for this sort of thing - Chudah's Corner and VGMdb. Chudah's site only allowed submissions from a very small group of select trusted people while VGMdb pretty much allows anyone to add anything; while CC's approach is more "watertight" in real terms it mean the site was missing out on a *lot* of titles and it wouldn't accept submissions from people who had them. VGMdb's collaborative effort means that not only is everyone adding titles but everyone can help edit mistakes or add further info (scans, artist info, etc) too.
As far as VGCollect goes... I think the submission form needs to be reworked - there's a lot of scrolling, both to find the "Submit Item" button and when going through the "Type"/"Genre", etc options and there's no "submit similar item" if you're working through a NES/Saturn/PC collection or whatever . Easier submissions means more submissions! Also rather than having edits require approval (which is rather odd when new submissions do not) if possible have the system create a log of all edits, meaning that any false corrections can be rolled back by a member of staff if they need to be.
-
Having dealt with endless bureaucratic BS at MobyGames, I'm happy I don't have to wait weeks and weeks (or even several years) to have one single correction approved. So that's one advantage.
But some people really shouldn't be allowed to add items right away... this is how we keep getting tons of duped Pokemon games.
-

ALL of this...but...determining, singling-out, and making public/drawing attention to who these "some people" are, I think...well...that there would just not be any nice, easy, and/or polite ways to do this...

I never gave names. :P
I just wish there was a way to limit folks from adding items until they read -how- to add them so we don't end up with more dupes than necessary.
And yeah, I sounded mean. I'm sorry.
-
First ten subs/edits are put in a queue until they're approved? Would that help weed out some of the trouble?
-

I didn't mean to imply that you ever did :)
I was just agreeing with you (based moreso on the "knowing what to do -before- doing it" piece).
-

Could help...I was thinking of some kind of 'practice'/'hypothetical' submission to be done & approved before having limitless editing/submission abilities.
This way, it could be a quick 'n' simple blanket & generic kind of thing *and*, if there's any problems, it's (I think) the best way & time to catch them & address them.

Well, the current submission system seems fine at the moment. If badges were desired, they can be added. If it does in fact turn out to be bad, badges for submissions can be disabled. May not be necessary to change the system due to a possible consequence from incentivizing submissions.
-
In the meantime, maybe we should do a monthly cleanup project of sorts that everyone can try and contribute to? I remember someone (maybe Matt?) mentioning that hardware is a bit of a mess these days, but I've noticed others (PC Engine games, etc) that are just missing a lot of things, like cover images, barcodes, etc.
I periodically start doing stuff like that, but after a dozen submissions or so, get tired and wind up forgetting where I left off...

A new user added a ridiculous amount of Japanese PSP games recently, and I've been trying to clean that section up. But I've been way too busy lately.
-
What if there was a period of time that a new user had to wait to submit an update/add new items? That might seem like it takes away from the draw of VGC a bit, but it would also give new users a chance to go through and see how things are correctly input.
-
I dig that idea. At the very least, it would probably cut down on people who create an account, add a ton of duplicates without even trying to search, and then just kind of disappear into the ether.
I'm still annoyed with that dude who added like 20 Tales duplicates.
-
Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, DuckTales, Pokemon, and anything with the word "the" in the beginning of the name are the worst for duplicated entries... its a wonder I have hair left.
-
Hey Matt,
Is there any way to add a section for rarity. That's the only thing that seems to be missing. It would be great to sort games by rarity, or to know the rarity of the games in your collection, without having to recheck everything.
Thank you.

The problem with Rarity is that it seems to change with demand. A few years ago Little Samson wasn't considered "Rare". Good luck finding one now.

Right? I saw a beatup copy of the first one at Gamestop... Good thing I knew about the rerelease or else I would've been tricked!

It would be nice if we can add the launch price of the item to the item page.
-
Launch price is something that would be tough to look up on a lot of the older items.

I mean the SRP (suggested retailer price). Because I want to know if I get/got screwed in a deal.
Plus I think it would be easy to find. Or maybe it's just me. :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

I'll jump back into this discussion once all the bugs are worked out of the new system. It'll be a lot easier to add new features so we'll see some quick movement on most of these.
-
I don't know if this is a place to post this or if it was already mentioned, but I would like to be able to click on the magnifying glass icon in the search bar. Not all devices have the privilege of having an Enter button on the keyboard.

I just updated this!
I'm also locking this thread and created a new updated To-Do list version 2.0.0.0.
