Modern Video Games / Re: State of Play | January 31, 2024 thoughts?

I know I'm late to this, but whatever...

I want to say enough with the remakes already, but then again, I'm eagerly awaiting FFVII Rebirth and whatever comes after that, so I'm in no position to say such a thing. I mean, who am I kidding? I've been of the opinion that, as far as RPGs go, both The Legend of Dragoon and Parasite Eve are far more deserving candidates for such a treatment at this point, with Final Fantasy IX set aside given the rumors and because I'm biased toward it. It's a 50/50 deal for me, is what I guess I'm trying to say. What I do believe is that if Capcom intends to keep that train going, then they really need to tackle Dino Crisis; it's what almost everyone wants, and it'd be nice to revive an old, nearly forgotten gem of the past.

[...] Remake treatment [...] I don't think RE5 needs it. Honestly, I didn't think RE4 needs it either, though I'll be tempted to get it after a significant price drop. I really enjoyed RE5. The move to action was great, but I understand why the Survival Horror enthusiasts didn't enjoy the transformation.

Agreed, agreed, the same for me, and agreed.

Nice to know ZZZ is confirmed for PlayStation.

Fuck gacha.

Well that was a massive disappointment. I was happy to see more Silent Hill 2 gameplay, but not even a vague release date was pretty crappy. I am so freakin sick of Kojima. I get people love Metal Gear, but most of what he's worked on over the last decade makes him look like a giga edgelord. Everything else was very disappointing to meh imo. My wife is very hyped about Dragons Dogma 2, bur personally it's not something I'm into.

I am not watching these State of Plays live anymore. 9/10 times they are incredibly disappointing.

Good grief, dude.

PS: This is the only thing that comes to mind whenever I see the name "Stellar Blade":

Banzai!

Star Fox is the better game, of course.

Anyway, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade (aka Korean NieR:Automata), Dragon's Dogma 2, and Rise of Ronin fondled my jollies. And, of course, Kojima and his fever dream. I got to be honest here, though; if I ever were to give any of these a try, I'll probably do so once they go on sale, so...

Pentiment launches on PS5 at half the install size and double the frame rate. Developer says it's a bug and the Series X version will be fixed.

Modern Video Games / Re: What are your thoughts on Simulator Games?
« on: February 27, 2024, 03:06:12 am »
Wait. Now that you mention those, yeah, I guess I've played some simulation games, then.

But then again, in the grand scheme of things, aren't all games simulators? Use all the knowledge you acquired playing all those zombie games for when the undead rise from their graves. Take everything you learned from playing Earth Defense Force for when alien creepy crawlers invade Earth. Or make Ryu and Ken your senseis and learn how to fight so that you can get your ass beat in style. The possibilities are endless.

It's abit of a bad habit that I have to get across that I'm being more lighthearted about stuff since it can be hard to get across certain tones on the internet.  Been on the internet for way too long lol

I get it; old habits die hard. Like I said, it was just an observation. I actually had a friend in high school who spent so much time playing online games that he would say "lol" whenever he found something funny or amusing. It was kind of weird at first, but we eventually got used to it, although another one of our friends would say something along the lines of, "Why are you saying it? Just chuckle or something!"

In my above comment, I never mentioned you explicitly. Given your public opinion on the franchise, I had my doubts you were buying the games new, or buying them at all. I was referring to "those who are blindly loyal to the brand," as you worded it.

Dude, yes, I'm well aware of that; the "trying to teach a fish how to swim" comment was just a jovial preamble to where I wanted to get with my line of thought, like a "Ha! You don't need to tell me." I guess I could've said "you're preaching to the choir" or just "preach" instead. I know getting a message across on the Internet can often be hit or miss, but I genuinely felt that I didn't need to make it obvious since you're a smart guy and I figured you'd get it: I don't feel my post was aggressive in any way to be construed otherwise. Oh well, my apologies then if that was the case.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to today with cynical optimism.

[...] All of this to say that I don't agree with the prices old games have nowadays.

Emulate to your heart's content, my friend; it's all fair game.

If all this sounds confusing sorry but my english is not the best...

As I once said to another member around here, I love it when someone excuses their English for not being "good", yet they will often show a better grasp and understanding and even better grammar than most native speakers. So yes, it's good; it's just a matter of structuring your posts better, which I'm certainly not going to hold against you.

Of that list, I'm definitely checking out Undetected [...]

Yeah, Undetected is really good; it services the "tactical espionage" part of its inspirator's tagline quite well. If you also like the original Metal Gear games, and if you haven't already, check out UnMetal; it's top-notch. To make it clear to everyone that Metal Gear was the inspiration for the game, the developers even made a fake ad parodying the "Gear Up." ad for Metal Gear for the NES. That alone tells you all you need to know about the game. It's a drolly coincidence that the names for both start with the same prefix, now that I think about it.

[...] I'm a huge fan of Mega Man Legends (I'd adore a collected set of those three games with some updated controls and such), so I'll give Halcyon Days a look for sure.

Don't forget about Great Adventure on 5 Islands; it might be a mobile game, but it wasn't bad at all. Plus, it would be nice to have a game that, for all intents and purposes, has since been "lost" and therefore is long forgotten or wasn't even known about in the West.

While I'm at it, I might as well mention Protodroid DeLTA, which began primarily as a Mega Man fan game that eventually became its very own thing, but it clearly pays homage to the series, particularly X and Legends; in fact, the developer is no stranger to the series given that he released a few fan projects based on them, both of which you can see here and here if interested. I haven't played it yet, but from all the footage I've seen, it looks good.

Also, I've no clue what's your preference toward fan-made games, but in regards to Mega Man Legends, there's one based around the third entry...or a recreation of what was shown before it was cancelled; it's called Mega Man Legends 3: The Prologue!. If you haven't checked it out already, it's in 8-bit, emulating the original NES games. To make things almost semi-official, the soundtrack was done by Makoto Tomozawa, which also received a limited physical release with original artwork by Hideki Ishikawa, both integral parts of the series. There's no landing page for the game, but here's the official preview video, and if you, or anybody else who's reading this, happens to be interested, a link to download the game can be found here. Just follow the prompts on each screen, and when you reach the last page, input "dash3" in the field when asked for the password (without the quotation marks, of course). It's a fun game.

Anyway, to keep the topic going, here's another one: Devil Spire. I fortuitously came upon it and had to share it, although it's from 2022, so I honestly have no clue how I didn't find it sooner—maybe you did?

Plastomorphosis was also released last month, too; it looks cool.

And last but not least, Slave Zero X, which is a prequel to Slave Zero that was released digitally last week; it's basically a PS1 title released nearly three decades later, and I'm all in for it. The people behind it are quite inattentive, though, given that I emailed them nearly two months ago regarding the physical release of the game, specifically the Calamity Edition, and I've yet to receive a reply from them, not even an automated one.

And that'd be it. Enjoy.

Like I stated above, I backtracked on that shallow opinion which didn't have much thought behind it, and quickly too.

Amended or not, it was still ripe for the taking, and I don't miss opportunities.

Of course it isn't, and it should amount to something. But, based on the "[r]ather than any actual feedback from players" Masuda quote you referenced, those cries will likely be ignored, unfortunately. That people continue to support a company when said company doesn't have the interest of their consumers in mind, especially when the quality of its products has drastically and noticeably diminished, is sad.

You're trying to teach a fish how to swim; the last game in the series I bought upon release was Diamond and Pearl, getting the rest of the games way after the fact and second hand. The only reason I pre-ordered Scarlet was due to the monumental changes made to the series and because, even though I had my doubts, I was rather optimistic, which was a fair stance to have given that Legends: Arceus was the right step forward. As can be inferred from the quotes I included, Masuda basically made the games for him—"I don't feel as pressured about the existing fans—I feel as though I simply hand them what we just came up with for them to check out (laughs)"—and whether the public liked them or not didn't seem to faze him much, until Gen. V, of course. His last stint as director was the Let's Go games, but sadly, his influence is still prevalent. And for the sake of clarity, I don't have anything against the guy; on the contrary, I have respect for him. Regardless of his methods, one can't ignore his contributions, particularly in the music department for the series, but his way of thinking in regards to the franchise was and still is counterproductive.

Hopefully, that stays true and remains a constant.

As a final note, you have to take into consideration that, aside from parents who blindly buy a Pokémon game for their kids without prior knowledge of their history, there's also those who are blindly loyal to the brand, those like Joe Merrick (aka Serebii) who'll defend the company and their decisions any chance they can get*, which, coupled with the tone-deaf responses of people like Masuda, it's no wonder we're where we are. Will it get better? Your guess is as good as mine.

*Let's see if Mr. Merrick's vanity bots come crawling in.

Either pirate or quit engaging in the "everything".

I can't actively condone illegal activity on a public forum, but I can advocate for actually owning the things you buy. [...]

There's a saying going around that's something along the lines of "if buying isn't owning, than pirating isn't stealing". I can't say I outwardly agree with that, however it's certainly food for thought.

[...] but I have to admit it's pretty convenient not having to deal with disc swaps whenever I feel like playing it.

Well, you could say that convenience has been there ever since emulation, but I obviously get what you mean. At least this instance helps your understanding of why some people prefer that format over the other, so it's nice you went through it even if it's just once solely for that, especially given how you would snoot at digital games in the past.

I think that even if most of the industry goes mostly digital in the future, as long as companies sell consoles that take some sort of physical media, collectors will continue buying physical games.

As long as those "physical" games don't end up being full-blown glorified coasters, then sure; otherwise, why bother? We'll see...

I think one aspect people tend to overlook is the sheer amount of indie games only released for PC at a marginal price or even free. For many of these games, in my opinion, their quality outperforms games published by major studios, although that's an effect caused by publishers rushing developers to meet deadlines. I'd be playing more indie games, for sure.

Oh, definitely, without a doubt and 100%: most indie games, I'm of the same opinion as you, have no problem kicking 'AAA' games to the curb; it's a universal truth at this point, I feel. This, I think, can be particularly likened to Pokémon, where fan games, especially ROM hacks, often tend to be of far superior quality, offering a better experience than the main games in the series have in the past decade; in fact, some of the people behind those projects went on to create and develop games of their own, with Monster Crow, Anode Heart, and CountryBalls Heroes being some recent examples.

My original post was geared mainly toward the "mainstream" side of the industry, given that their reason for pushing digital so fervently is insincere; they see it as a casino of sorts, and it's therefore driven not only by greed but also by the corporate side of it, which worsens it. In truth, I don't have a problem getting games digitally; the majority of indie games, after all, began and often continue to be distributed that way. But the difference between the two sides is, to use a simple analogy, like me choosing water over soda to quench my thirst, so I can't in good conscience go with the least healthy, less satiable option when what they're offering me boils down to renting a license key at a premium that they can in turn revoke anytime they want due to licensing issues or what-have-yous. If the main point of their argument for pushing digital-only distribution by 20XX is cutting costs, then the least that they should do is pass those savings on to their customers since there literally won't be anything tangible in exchange. They want the maximum amount of profit by exerting the least amount of effort, which is irrefutable at this point, I believe.

Truthfully, I've always been of the opinion that modern gaming as we know it began its slow descent into mediocrity ever since the 7th generation, going further downhill as the years passed, so to put it bluntly, whatever these companies end up doing has no immediate impact on me—I'm a shameless cheapskate anyway, if you catch my drift.

One last thought: never give up your freedom for the sake of convenience.

Slowly but surely, the transition continues.

Let's wait a bit and see if the few rumors that purport that Nintendo's next console is digital-only are true, and then I guess we can sit here to ponder this far more critically. After all, as I said, we tasted the waters already with Sony and Microsoft releasing consoles without disc drives, so my way of thinking is if the third dog in the race, who's stubbornness knows no bounds and has often shown to be staunchly stuck in the past, does end up following the same approach as its competitors, then that would change things, for sure. If, in the next generation, the three biggest names in the industry release digital-only consoles, then I guess we could begin to fully embrace the digital era...maybe. We can count on there being opposition if that were to happen because, as I said, even if it's a "minority", people who prefer physical media still make up a big piece of the pie. But we'll see, I guess. Full disclosure, though: given Nintendo's "always late to the party" way of doing things, I don't see them going all-digital yet, mainly because I don't think Japan cares as much as the West does for digital media.

[...] I do want to address the issue of many modern physical games, particularly on the PS5 and Series X/S, being little more than beefed up CD keys. I say this because the discs are definitely more than CD keys, however without downloading the rest of the game which 90% of them require, the game will either not work at all or be in an unplayable state. I've seen this with various PS4 games as well, although it is less egregious than on consoles from the current gen. What this essentially means is the longevity of collecting for the PS5, Series X/S, and even PS4 and XBONE is severely in question. [...]

Overall, in most cases, for modern physical releases, the game is included on the disc, especially when it comes to single-player titles. It's when developers push day-one patches to account for an unfinished game, cut corners because the game files were too big, or implement always-on DRM that factors in the idea of the discs being "glorified license keys", or rather "glorified coasters", for a far better-sounding descriptor. A game that would require a day-one patch to add missing content or essentially the full game due to being released unfinished will be nothing but utter trash in the future once the servers hosting those files go under—I'm looking at you, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5. This is what separates Nintendo from the other two: Nintendo Switch releases have the full game on the cartridge and, barring a patch or two, are playable straight from the package. A recent example is Star Ocean: The Second Story R, which I posted derisively about given that it happens to state on the cover that a download is required only for it to be just for a language pack, the game being fully playable offline.

My backlog is huge. I intend to play and enjoy it.  :)

Shin Contra (PS2)

And to think that this one could have been an N64 game had the console not been such a flop over in Japan, and possibly even one of the last few titles to be released for that console, too.

Keio Flying Squadron (SCD)

Possibly one of the few good games the console has, and that's as long as you like quirky shmups. Robo Aleste, Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm, and Lords of Thunder are also good, but you probably knew that already.

There's also Popful Mail, and the Lunar games, but you're better off getting the PS1 remakes for the latter. And I can't obviously end this without the obligatory "FMV games suck balls" snub.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PSX)

I like that you type PSX instead of PS1.

Anyway, I ended up settling for the JP version because I'm not paying what people are asking for the NTSC release.

I so have some great Pre-orders in the wings tho. Unicorn Overlord, here I come!

The game does look good—but that name, though. I guess the absurdity of the roster needed an equally preposterous name. I still haven't made up my mind, but seeing as I have all of Vinallaware's Western releases, I guess I might as well add this one to the fold, right?

Worth mentioning there are several other recent Xbox games already released on other platforms including Ori and the Will of the Wisps on Switch, Psychonauts 2 on PS4, As Dusk Falls releasing on PlayStation in March, weird GoldenEye 007 remaster thing on Switch, Minecraft Legends on Switch and PlayStation, Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop both on PS5.

+1

You know, I was here as a guest a week or so ago after you posted this topic and intended to log in to reply to it and a few other posts, but got sidetracked, ultimately getting swamped with other stuff. Then two weeks passed by like a New York minute, and here we are with the entirety of this "situation" having been nothing more than doom and gloom prophesied by a coterie of rabid fanboys overindulging their salty diets.

Regardless, I guess I'll still post what I wrote down for the sake of posterity; it's just an opinion anyway.

Quote from: pzeke
So, in other words, Phil Spencer is "throwing the towel". Didn't he fibsay sometime ago that Microsoft might be "leaving" the gaming business? Didn't Nute—I mean, didn't Natella also say something similar to that extent while also disavowing exclusives? Let's not forget about the recent layoffs, either. They lost, or that's what they told the FTC to get away with their purchase of Activision Blizzard (or, as some might interpret that, they're "evolving"); they're not competing anymore, or at least not in the same way (i.e., "Xbox on every screen"). Gaming, or the consoles, rather, have never been the company's main focus, as it has never been profitable enough in their eyes, to the point where they in fact stopped disclosing sales numbers since it's more of a service model to them now (i.e., "Netflix of gaming"). In short, hasn't this been a long time coming? I think somehow becoming a third-party publisher seems like the best next step for them; it really doesn't sound that far-fetched, all things considered. More bank for them, which has always been their end goal anyway.

While writing this, I'm somehow reminded of something Steve Jobs once said to the effect of Microsoft only destroying and not innovating, or some such. Maybe I'm misremembering. My point is that Miscrosoft is a filthy monopolist, and perhaps it's about time they get some form of comeuppance, however small it may be. Then again, they can take whatever loss comes their way.

Bit of a random topic to bring this thread back to life with, but I started delving into AFI's 90's output because I sorta realized that other than the All Hallows EP, I never got into the band, because when I got into that EP for being involved with Tony Hawk and then when they got more popular with their early 00's output with songs like Miss Murder, and it was more...emo and dropping the more punk vibe, I just had no interest in the band and otherwise never listened to anything else other than that single EP.

Davey destroyed the punk scene.

I'm being facetious, of course. Early AFI was and still is the shit, with their horror punk–oriented albums being my absolute favorites; however, I stopped listening after "Decemberunderground", which I liked if I'm being honest, but I drifted away from the band and didn't bother to listen to anything else from them. Actually, with the aforementioned and "Sing the Sorrow", they're the only "emo" band I've ever listened to. And mind you, that's not a dig at them, as I find those two albums worth a listen.

Anyone else had that? You got obsessed with something specific from a band, maybe a song or one album, and you just never realized they had a bunch of other great stuff till later on? I often have the thing where I'll get hooked on a single song or two, but the rest of the band's output does little for me and that's just how it stays, but never have I just been like "Oh, there's like 4 sick albums I just never got into for no real reason" lol

I've obsessed over bands for sure, especially when it comes to certain albums or songs, but never to the point where I focus on one thing from them and ignore the rest; on the contrary, I tend to try and get as much from their output as possible, especially when discovering them for the first time. Or at least I did back then, when I was more active when it came to music, as nowadays I rarely go out of my comfort zone, as hardly anything entices me to do so.

Non sequitur, or maybe not given the context of the conversation, but this reminded me of a time long ago when my mother threw away a Bad Religion t-shirt I had, the black one with just their logomark/emblem, because, you know, a prohibition sign pressed against a "crucifix" must mean my son is a satanist or something. I remember asking her about it because I wanted to wear the shirt one day and couldn't find it, to which she replied with the ever-so-trite "I don't know what you're talking about", which I knew without a doubt was bovine manure. So, given that I knew that she knew what I was indeed talking about, but since I didn't want to go through the whole ordeal that is "mother discussions over nothing" while still feeling a bit snarky, I simply told her to let me know next time she wanted to throw anything else that I had paid for so that I could then charge her the money I spent first before the trashing. Granted, saying that didn't exactly go well because "nothings" were in fact discussed, but she understood what I meant. That was ages ago. Growing up, she was never a restrictive parent, and she on occasion loses even her own things, which one could say is what happened, but given she's quite religious—albeit not overly, for clarity's sake—I'm sure having seen the shirt gave her the wrong impression, even though the way she went about it was antipodal to her whole persona.

By the way, and this is just an observation, so there's no need to take it to heart or anything, but you type "lol" quite a lot. ...Well, I guess we could mark that as the actual non-sequitur.
