Title: Secret Santa 2016
Post by: soera on September 29, 2016, 06:22:37 pm
All right, its almost that time of year ... Christmas. Im putting up a thread to see if people are interested in round 4 of Secret Santa. ****WISHLIST LOCKED****

If you want to participate this year, please post your name on this thread. I want people to have been members of these forums for at least 3 months prior to this and some sort of activity here. We have had 3 years so far of 100% success and we are not going to fail this year! Sign ups will be for 3 weeks. Once its done, you have a week to send me your wishlist, address info, and what not. Also include if you are willing to send out of your own country cause every year we get non US participants.

When you reply on this thread, post what you think the spending limit should be. I will take the most popular option and thats what we will go with. And since Im mentioning it ... if the limit is $100 (an example) please dont send someone $10 worth of crap. The limit is more of a guideline as to what to expect to spend. Almost everyone here the past few years has went over the limit for their participant. Within the week of sending in the wishlists, if the limit becomes more than you want to spend, let me know and I can remove you from the list. No hard feelings will be had.

This sounds like fun! Unfortunately I'm pretty broke right now so I don't think I can join in :(
Still, to everyone joining in: Have fun!  ;D

I'd like to participate, 30$-50$ sounds like a decent median to me.

EDIT: Seeing a lot of users talk about out of country shipping, I would like to stay within my country if possible as well.

I'm in, and I'll give a range of 30 to 50 dollars.

EDIT: And while I didn't mind, because my giftee was AWESOME, I would prefer to not have to ship to Canada again. It really bumped up the cost of things. I wanted to add more to the gift but the shipping rate would go up even more.

I was thinking about not joining this year after the shenanigans of last year, but it's all about the spirit of the season and stuff.

So I'm in again.

I think we did $50 last year, but maybe that was an upper limit rather than a suggested value.  I vote $50.

I'd prefer not to have an international giftee, I think shipping for my SS last year cost me almost as much as what I got him.

Yeah I'm up.  We used $50 last time as the threshold, that seemed pretty good

Shipping over borders, try shipping overseas!  This did concern me as well, I believe I accidentally went over the $50 mark a fair bit

I guess I'll give it a shot. Never did it before. I don't see anything wrong with a $65 limit since it's about the price of a brand new current gen game. As for wish lists, couldn't someone just check your wish list on the website rather than sending one in; gives a better element of surprise.

It depends on what you want to do, but you could definitely do that. Some people have very large wish lists on the site (like me) or some don't put priority in the listings.

So last year I put 20 items in a "top preference" list that I sent to Soera, and mentioned that really anything from my site wishlist that was above "medium" priority would be just as good. I did end up getting something from my site wishlist anyway, so it was quite the awesome suprise.  :D

I always love unboxing the SS gift on Christmas morning - always a fun surprise and nice to get something physical from a community we're so familiar with online.

Count me in! I'd prefer to stay in-country but if there aren't enough folks in the other parts of North America to exchange with each other, I'd be willing to help out.

Also, I thought $50 was a good amount. I thought people did a good job of taking into account used items and such to make the most of the dollars or to have it be equivalent to what it would've been sealed. Also, people made handmade things last year as well :)

And in regard to wishlists, the more items on the list, the better, and I think we all use our VGC wishlists differently. Last year, my wishlist for my SS included additional info about stuff I liked in general and game-related things like plushies and DVDs to give the SS some options (I love gaming-related keychains to add my Christmas tree, for example). I also specified that I was perfectly fine with used items as long as they were complete. I've received wishlists from others with their preferred genres and favorite games because they were happy to receive any memorabilia as well.

It's probably my favorite thing we do on the site, not gonna lie. :) It's just really cool to send and receive gifts from fellow gamers from all over the country/world

Also, I think $65 works fine too, makes more sense to me. Certainly will be ok with whatever we end up deciding on though!

Yeah, I have a preference to stay in country too.  :-\ Hopefully that doesn't cause too much trouble for you Soera. I can totally do outside the US if you need more people to! I also don't want to exclude all our friends overseas.  :)

I guess I'll be in this year. If something were to come up, when would be the last time to back out? (It's been a rough year for our family, a few deaths, but I think it's all okay now.)

I think $30-$50 sounds good. I'm leaning more towards the $30 end, but if the rest of the board disagrees, I'll still play ball according the rules.

You know, I was always wondering about that "poll" option that shows up underneath our post count on our stats page... now would be a perfect time to have a poll to decide on the pricepoint!

Not as awesome as said giftee's gifter  ;)

I'm also in for this year, $30-50 makes sense to me! With our still superb exchange rate, I don't think I can go much higher though.

You give that person too much credit! <3

Anyways, I've been going back and forth about posting something on this thread regarding this year's SS. I feel the need to point out a rule that should go without saying: if you decide to participate, then don't be a prick. Last year, one of the participants' had a giver that was disrespectful.

First, the gift was cheap. Everyone who signs up for this realizes that he or she may not get a gift that reaches the maximum limit. If you're asking for a rare Sega Saturn game, don't expect it. However, 99% of the time, the recipients liked their gifts. If you have financial issues this year or you just don't want to spend money, that's totally fine. Life happens; no one will be upset if you can't participate. However, if you do participate, show some respect and follow the adage, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Second, the gift had absolutely no thought behind it. The receiver's present was a game that he/she already had in his/her collection. To me, this means that the giver put zero effort in finding a gift and did absolutely no research. Do not participate if you are not going to put in some effort for your recipient. Take their wishlist into account and look at what they want. If they aren't clear, then try to be creative and take a cue from their collection to see what types of games they like and what's missing.

Obviously, I will not be naming names in this story. Nor will I be upset if the moderators find this post offensive and it gets deleted. I just had to get this off of my chest. When I heard about what happened, I was infuriated. If the same incident happens again and I learn about it, so help me. I know I haven't been on this forum as long as others. I know that I'm not a moderator. But, I do know that this website has provided me with some irreplaceable company and I'll be damned if I see any of them get shafted because of another member's lack of respect.

I think that's about it; carry on.

On that note, I think we should either go with $30 or $50, and not as a range. It should be at a single point so we don't have any disparities.

Count me in!  I love this stuff.
Just give me someone that really wants cool stuff.

I also don't care to ship to those shifty Canadians.  I'll even go to Europe if there's something over here that they want.

Merry Christmas 2 months early!
Title: Re: Interest for Secret Santa 2016

I've done Secret Santa in a lot of different groups over the years, the rules vary obviously from group to group.

But some of the groups I've taken part in have had rules such as, instead of a maximum spending, a minimum spending limit.  Usually either a minimum value or actually minimum spent.

Some groups do the minimum value to prevent someone from say going to a game store and paying $25 for Mario Bros./Duck Hunt and calling it a day.  (Yes, I've seen this)  I've personally had a similar situation in the past, but not nearly that extreme, more like a $20 value on a $50 minimum spent.  But then this forces the gifter to be thrifty or overly generous.

Some groups do the minimum spent so that, if you find a $30 game on someone's wishlist for $15, you should be willing to still spend the other $10 to hit that $25 minimum.  It is all about giving, you know.  See the previous paragraph about this one's downside.

Of course, I've also had SS where they never sent a package, or the package was lost and never replaced.  Had that happen twice last year.  Not here, of course.

Insisting on this as well. If you cannot afford to participate, please don't. Do it for the others, but for yourself too; if you can't spare that money, don't spend it. I'm sure we've all had moments where money was tighter or big expenses arised all of a sudden. It's okay.

I'm in. If I get someone overseas is it ok.

I am fine with $50. But please no higher. I am expecting with shipping to out of country I'll probably spend close to $100 total.

For folks that have shipped international before any tips?

Do I need to mail it out first week of November to be sure it gets there before Christmas?

if you are shipping to Canada, if it is under 4lb. It is hard to beat usps first class i think.

Elsewhere, I want to say sadly fedex has the best rates for international, but you can gets shipping quotes online.

As for arrival, i think it is usually about 2-3 weeks.

I've created a wish list and have sent Soera my shipping information.

Also, I'll try to find the threads from previous Secret Santas and post them on here. Last year's was fun, but the one from 2014 completely wowed me. Not only did I get a great gift, but you could see my view on the concept of Secret Santa go from pessimistic to enthusiastic.

I have a similar mindset, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I got my wishlist down under 50 this year, but what's left isn't mostly cheap, so I'm knocking my wishlist back up with some cheaper stuff I've been wanting.  Working on that right now.

I'd imagine a lot of us have very large, multipage wishlists that people won't want to go through.

I think it would be easier if we were able to post/turn-in a top 10 wishlist (within the price-range), or something.

I usually give Soera a list that's a subset of my wishlist. Stuff that I commit to not getting for myself during the time of the secret Santa and I make it a big enough list that they can still surprise me. I also put some random stuff in there that's pretty wide open. Like "Any amiibo" or something like that.

I don't want my secret Santa worrying about whether or not I'm going to buy the thing from my wishlist before they can gift it to me.

This! This is important. I've definitely ordered something for a SS and then came to the forum to find that they bought it for themselves. Had to deal with returning items (or eating the cost) and starting over with the shopping ideas.

I try not to buy anything on my wishlist during Secret Santa time.  This weekend is probably going to be my last major outing before x-mas.

I like to add an addendum to my lists, if you have some game in mind you think I'd like but I don't own, go for it.  It might wind up a new favorite and I just don't know because I've never played it.

I always want to add a statement like any N64/SNES game I don't own, but that's just not reasonable to do that kind of work to figure out what I have and don't have.

It's just too hard to make the time or effort to figure that stuff out, especially when you don't have the time to go hunting or shopping in general.

I don't think it could hurt. Soe-soe is organized and he'll keep track of everything.

I'll still peruse certain stores, but I won't buy anything from ye olde Wish List. I also like the idea of adding an addendum; if there's a PlayStation 2 game out there that my gifter thinks I'd like and the price is nice then have at it! I think I convinced my giftee last year to check out more in the Atelier series. ^.^

Doom, I'm with ya my brotha.  My wishlist is a list of shit I want.  I'll get 10-15 that are in the price range and I'll send a list to soera.  These are 10-15 things that I promise not to buy.   ;)

I try not to buy much of anything for myself once names are handed out, just in case.  Same thing applies so I don't go out and buy something that my wife or a family member might be buying me.  Though, in previous years, everybody refuses to buy video games because they think it's a phase for me and that I really wouldn't appreciate it as much as say... a usb mini-lamp or a TV show themed Yahtzee.

Ha, "a phase." Thankfully my friends/family know I'm interested in most anything/everything videogame-related. But yeah, I'm the same way - I try not to buy anything for myself when it gets closer to the holidays. Definitely nothing for myself during the month of December (allowing myself a little leeway if I see a must-have item during Black Friday/Cyber Monday).

Definitely nothing for myself during the month of December (allowing myself a little leeway if I see a must-have item during Black Friday/Cyber Monday).
My eldest sister, who is usually the most annoying and least pleasant, actually got me the cooler of the gifts I received last year.  She bought me pretty big Toad and Yoshi statues, that I presume she got from a flea market.  These are the types of things I always hope to get, random video game related stuff that I wouldn't buy myself.

Do you think folks need to specify about if they care about complete-in-box and/or used items? I assume that, since we're all collectors, used is fine but I know some folks feel strongly about CIB (and player's choice items  ;) ).

If you are using the wishlist feature, you should be using the notes feature.  I mark whether or not I want an item complete or if loose is fine.  Shoot, I even have a few games where I already have the box and just want the game and manual.  Though, last year I marked Game, Manual, Box for a game and that was ignored.  *shrug*

Which reminds me, I have a game that I have the box and manual for and have had for over a year now and really need to make sure I know to get it at some point down the line.

You can already specify that when you add an item to your wishlist.

I guess I need to work on updating my wishlist, then, since it seems I'm the only one that wants to turn in a shorter wishlist. It's been a long time, and I kind of keep my wishlist up-to-date on my trading site, instead.

Doom, I'm with ya my brotha.  My wishlist is a list of shit I want.  I'll get 10-15 that are in the price range and I'll send a list to soera.  These are 10-15 things that I promise not to buy.   ;)

My wish list is practically empty because I already have every game I ever wanted. The wishlist feature was a powerful tool for helping me stay aware and prioritize my purchases.

Only stuff left is new-old discoveries and unreleased titles.

This year for secret Santa I'm putting together a list of "I would be content if someone got this for me and I will probably never buy it for myself."

I too am fine with "surprise me with something I don't have that you think I might like."

I have a Silent Hill game in my back catalog from Telly that I intend to jump into next year.

Could I request that people reply with a reaction after they get their gift?

I remember one year that I participated where I sent someone an item off their wishlist, but also stuffed the box to the brim with all kinds of little extras. I wanted to see how the person enjoyed all of those extras, and I never heard anything about it.

I know, it sounds a little self-centered, sorry, but I like hear about the reaction.

Especially the video of you, me and Redblaze opening our gifts on the podcast. So much fun man, we gotta do that again this year!

That's why we filmed ourselves so we got an honest reaction when we opened our gift. It was a blast.

I don't think it's too much to ask :) I think there have been times before where the person received the item, but a post was never made. I don't think a formal thanks is required - just nice to know that they got it ok, too!

I personally love to open the gift on Christmas morning on livestream along with other gifts, so whomever is my SS can see it live if they want!

I'm a fairly non-emotional person, and I generally look disinterested almost all of the time.

I always record opening every package I receive (minus from Amazon/Ebay/Stores), I just rarely upload them.

I think I did a mystery box with a guy and recorded it and uploaded it, and I got a bit of crap for seeming ungrateful.  Though, to be fair, he did send me stuff I already owned, stuff in poor condition, and a CD case full of sports games for 360.

So I'll record opening it, but I probably won't upload it.

I won't be recording it, never meant that. Just post a reaction, like, "Hey, this is what I got. This is cool, or this sucks."

I don't think it matters as long as you're pretty clear about what you're hoping for. The first year I participated, I used my recipient's wish list. Last year, I got a general description passed from the recipient to Soera that described the sorts of games to look for.

So minimally $50.  Got it.

I'm still slowly updating my wishlist.

First year doing the SS, and was wondering. Should I form a centralized list of specific things for participation, or is my VGC wishlist fine? Which have you members preferred in the past? I ask because I use my wishlist here to keep up with things I still want/need, and it's pretty large.
I usually send refer to my VGC wishlist and then add an addendum or two.  Usually the, feel free to go off book if you think it's something I'd like but don't own (which usually makes for a better mystery gift), or some folks like to mention other interests like comic books, anime, movies, plushies, etc.  Throwing in a statement like any game I don't own for X because I want more X games is kind of unreasonable and most SS probably wouldn't go for something like that.

I think last year I threw in some stuff that I didn't have on my VGC wishlist, because I wanted the games, but didn't actually care to track them.  I had like 1000 games on my wishlist a year or two ago, but I removed tons of it because I decided that a lot of the games weren't a high priority to me and it made looking at my wishlist quite daunting, so there are tons of stuff not on my list that would be good gifts for me, but I figure those games probably fall into the category of "if you think I'd like it, but don't own it"

$50 dollar minimum sounds good to me, too.

I still like the $30-$50 range that was originally suggested. $50, at a minimum, seems a bit steep to me. Because at a $50 minimum, people will probably expect more like $75. I don't spend more than $50 on some family members.

But it looks like I'll be in the minority, there. Like I said before, if that's the case, I'll still play ball.

Hopefully folks won't be expecting $75. When I see $50 minimum, I think folks should just expect about $50 worth of stuff. Whether it cost the SS $50 or not... well... (just saying, some of us are able to find good deals!) though personally if I get a good deal, I still try to add some goodies to bring the cost to me up to $50.

I went slightly over 50 last year only because of the shipping rates.

Same here.  I go for $50 spent and I generally get good deals, so I stretch my dollar as best I can.

I see $50 minimum, I expect $50 value.

My problem with $30-$50 is that someone could be spending a $30 value, while someone else is spending a $50 value. That's not fair; it should be one value rather than a range.

And like people said, it's $50 value, not necessarily that you spent $50 on it. :)

Just a friendly reminder that Tootsie Roll bags will be used as gift wrap. So don't just throw those out and act all high and mighty afterwards.

I hope you're my secret Santa  ;)

Also candy corn is great

also I'm so late

On one hand, I believe we should include shipping in that $50.  On the other hand, most folks don't ship efficiently, so they wind up wasting money on shipping rather than the gifts.

Also, folks who have out of country SS will kind of get the shaft.  I tried to go above for my giftee last year, but shipping out of country still cost me about $15.

Yeah, that's kind of my point, it's a large part of why if it can be helped set people together in the same country where you can.

I think I made the offer last year to kind of write up a little post with tips on how to ship efficiently.

5 more days to sign up! Clarification on things - I know a few people have went ahead and sent me a wishlist now but thats what the week after the signups is for. $50 price point is value, not spent. If you can get a $50 package together for $20, then you did good and your recipient will still be happy. As far as shipping goes, that should be considered in your budget. It sucks for the people in other countries but thats how it rolls. Its known that shipping sucks sometimes and Ive mentioned the overseas thing almost every year so people who live in a non US country should expect that part of their gift is that. One thing that was mentioned in the past is buying from maybe Ebay or Amazon in the giftee's country and just having it sent that way.

If I missed your name on the list so far, poke me and let me know.

Just please have a large list of items on your wish list to pick from.
Last year I got a list of ALL high value items but a couple (lucky I had an extra of one of those items.)  ;)
If you ask for Little Samson or Stadium Events your not getting it. lol  :P

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up. Friday, I will give a week for wish lists. If you do not send in a wish list in that week, I will remove you from the list. I do not want to deal with the hassle Ive had before of people trying to get in late and having to rearrange everything. I will send out emails to everyone once that week is over giving everyone their recipient. You will have 3-4 weeks to buy and an additional 3-4 weeks to send. Basically 8 or so weeks to buy a gift and send it out to get it there by Christmas.

I'm excited! I don't have that many presents to buy this year, so the chance to spread some holiday happiness (giggidy) and give someone a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Crazy Kwanza and/or Dignified Ramadan brings me joy.

Getting cool stuff from one of you darlings is nice, too. ^.~ My wish list is about complete.

I personally like to write mine out because I like to mention things that I'm generally interested in rather than just a bullet list of items. Also, I'll include things that aren't normally listed in this database. I'll have the bullet list, too, but want to give folks some freedom :) For instance, last year, I added a DVD and mentioned little game-related danglers for my Christmas tree to use as ornaments, and I can't list those in the VGC wishlist :)

Do you know if there's a way to export it? Might be easier for your SS to view if it's a list or something. I know I go to my local stores with my phone or a print out of the person's wishlist. Otherwise, the number of items seems fine to me. Some shoppers might prefer to aim for the retro stuff while other shoppers might prefer for the more current items. Gives some range for whoever your SS might be.

Also, I assume there's no way to sort by priority?
Title: Re: Interest for Secret Santa 2016
Post by: ignition365 on October 19, 2016, 04:22:29 pm
IMO, anything under 10 pages is perfectly fine.

I'll look at someone's wishlist and have an idea in my mind which titles I'm planning on getting.  If I'm in a situation where I'm going to flip through all pages of someone's wishlist on a whim, 10 pages would be about my limit I would bother to look through.

Of course, if I'm looking at someone's wishlist on a whim, I probably have an idea of what platform I'm considering, so I'll just look at their wishlist for a specific platform.

You can add a priority to each item, I've been doing that for my higher-wanted items. But I don't think you can sort it by priority.

It's too bad wishlists don't export the priority field to Excel, otherwise you could sort it there.

I don't think I can export it, anyways. I don't have Microsoft Office, which Excel is on. I don't want to pay $100+ for an office package. I just use Wordpad for making documents.

One handy thing for me on my old computer (without Office) - I drag Excel files into Google docs (free) and tell it to covert it to their Spreadsheets format. At least it's viewable and editable that way.

What I've done is PM Soera with basically the same info that I want passed on to the SS. Here's my PM from last year:

Quote
(my address)

(Note to Secret Santa:

This list is in no particular order... Used games are totally okay, but CIB, please!  Also, feel free to look at my wishlist at VGC for other ideas.  Please try to keep your identity secret (try to keep your username hidden unless it's inside with the present), and let Soera know if everything is wrapped inside or not wrapped - I like to keep everything wrapped until Christmas morning :)

Thank you so much, happy hunting, and happy holidays!)

(wishlist items)

Makes it easy (I hope!) for him to copy-pasta into a PM to the SS.

Double-post.  Looks like you can export your wishlist, but other people can't export the wishlist of other people... also, it doesn't have a column for priority :( Maybe this is something Jason can work on for next year? I think that would be a useful feature for folks in case they want to send a list to someone else without having to send them the whole spreadsheet themselves.

I should have mine sent in within a few hours.

I'll also add my own two cents to this, after reading through the thread.

I've done a few SS events elsewhere before, and just want to mention a couple things. One - I think a good wishlist should be comprised only of items that you would be stoked to find under your tree on Xmas day. I think most people probably realize this, but you probably shouldn't put anything on there that is merely just padding a collection, or something you don't care a whole lot about. Granted, it needs to be reasonable and not too tough on your Santa, but don't set them up to underwhelm you with what you might consider to be just a so-so surprise. Two - While I agree to the spending guideline and I think it's a good way to discourage effortless or thoughtless gifts, let's not forget that SS isn't about money, but rather about spreading holiday cheer. I would hope that nobody is counting dollars and change on Xmas day, and that we can trust that good effort was put into each gift, and that everyone should be delighted with what their Santa brought them, given the wishlist they have turned in.

I should have mine sent in within a few hours.

I'll also add my own two cents to this, after reading through the thread.

I've done a few SS events elsewhere before, and just want to mention a couple things. Good thoughts, warmsignal :) I'm always pleased with how lovely the gifts often turn out and all the thought behind the gifts! Last year, we had a number of handmade items included with games, and it's a great reminder of the lovely friendships that have blossomed through this site.  Looking forward to gathering things together for my SS recipient and Christmas morning already :D

There are only a few people left that need to send wish lists. I'm super excited for this!

So I'm gonna throw my mindset out here, because I'm weird.  If I get anything on my wishlist, I'm probably not going to be "stoked".  I'll be glad and appreciative, but I highly doubt "stoked".  If I were to get something Kashell 2014 style, sure I'd lose my mind, which I read as levels higher than stoked, but that can't and shouldn't be expected.  For me, I think the only reasonable way I could come out of this anywhere near surprised is if my SS saw my wishlist, looked at my collection, and saw that their favorite game isn't in my collection and thinks it is a travesty and puts a copy in my SS box.  Chances are, if I don't own it or it's not on my wishlist, it is a game I've not really heard of or never really gave a second thought.  And for certain, if this happens, this game will likely be Game #1 of 52 Game Challenge 2017.

And as much as I agree with your sentiment on #2, I've received a lot of thoughtless SS gifts in my experience.  Shoot, one year, my SS sent out an empty box and then deleted their account.  Another year USPS lost the package and it was never replaced.  That last one actually happened twice.  This year I think is the first year that I'm only taking part in one SS event.  And most years, I wind up signing up twice at places so my wife can get her own SS box and I just wind up sending out 2 SS boxes, but that's fine because I enjoy the hunt.  Some people just don't care, and that is just tragic.

Another question in addition to the post above:

Does anyone care about waiting until Christmas? Being a collector, I know I'm a hard guy to shop for. So I planned on opening mine as soon as I got it so my wife or someone else didn't buy me something my Secret Santa got me.

Does anyone have an issue with that?

Personally, If they aren't wrapped, I may let my wife open the gift and wrap them for me, so she knows what I'm getting and can pass that along to anyone who needs to know.

Heh copy/paste from page 9 : Friday, I will give a week for wish lists. Basically 8 or so weeks to buy a gift and send it out to get it there by Christmas

As for when people open it, that's up to them. I personally like to wait until Christmas morning, but I know other folks can't stand the wait :D

I'd like to have it my collection, too, just because of it's history in gaming. It's the first handheld to have a touchscreen, and it's the first one to have online service (I wonder if it still works).

Of course, it's not my top 10 or anything, lol.

Been quiet up in here.

I went shopping this morning and went to two stores. The first store let me down. It usually has a fantastic selection, but I only found a few things for my recipient. I decided to take a chance and make a detour to another store that usually has a limited selection. I'm so glad I did because I feel like I hit the mother load. I really hope he/she likes the gifts. I may have gone a few bucks over the buying limit, but it was so worth it.

The gifts are packed up and ready to ship. I'm going to wait until after Thanksgiving to ship the gift. I really want to ship it now, though. XD

Except for one game that I already had, that's what I had to do, too. I've been frequenting the same spots for years, my town isn't all that big. So there's not a lot of physical locations that I can visit that haven't already been plundered.

Ah, darn, I missed the deadline. Well, I look forward to seeing what everybody receives this year!

I was gonna say, you were around for last year and I was wondering if you were going to join in again. That's too bad  :(

Anyway, all my items have come in that I've already purchased, still looking for those last special things. Can't wait to wrap everything up and send it out!

I know people are looking for updates from me. And I will do that in due time ... I am wanting to wait a bit til I get enough people who have sent/received so that I can update all at once and try to keep people's Santa somewhat of a mystery. I do know that a few people have already commented on receiving their items so the turn around time on this maybe the fastest year so far.

I just wanted to send a heads up to my SS I've come into possession of one of the games that was on my SS list, Kromaia Omega on PS4. A friend found it for me on the cheap and passed it along to me. Hopefully this doesn't create an issue for them. If they've already acquired it though then it shouldn't be an issue as I can pass the copy I just got to a family member who's most likely getting a PS4 this Christmas.

I've been trying to be good and not pick up anything that I listed but it's been hard!  :-[  :P  ;)

So speaking of Santa time... my brother came by before he had to head back to Houston and he directly asked what I want for Christmas.  Normally none of my family bother asking me and proceed to buy me junk.  Usually they will at some point see said junk sitting somewhere out of the way, still sealed.  I've had them ask why I haven't opened it.  I try and be polite and just say I haven't gotten around to it.  Sometimes I say stuff like "Uh, because Yahtzee is shit".

So I passed him along my Amazon wishlist and my VGC wishlist on the off chance he can be bothered to buy me a game or two.

That was a pleasant surprise.  Hopefully my other siblings will follow suit.

Dice based games are the devil and you should be ashamed for liking them.

I'm mostly kidding.  I really really hate dice based games.  I'm starting to really hate coin flipping based ones too.

Question: When we get our goodies, do you want us to post our pics here, or in another thread?

Another Question: I plan on opening mine when I get it so my wife doesn't get me some of the same stuff (she knows where my wishlists are on the computer). Would anyone be offended? And if not, is it okay to post the pics early, or should we wait until Christmas to do so?

Me personally, I'd wait before posting pictures. Not Christmas day wait but at least get a week or so into December.  ;)

Anyway, I'm trying to wrap up my Secret Santa stuff this weekend. My recipient chose some interesting things for their list, some of which are on the expensive side. I thought I had one item locked down but found out the game had a dead battery so I'm back to square one on finding another copy.

I think I suggested it already, but if not I'll suggest it again.

Have your wife open your SS box and wrap the gifts for you.  She knows what you are getting so she won't buy a dupe, and you still get a christmas surprise.  That's my plan.

The only issue is that I keep consistently finding games on my wishlist for diiiiiiiiiiiirt cheap.

Every year some folks open it early anyway. We usually create a separate thread for the pictures in case some people don't want to see them before Christmas day  :)

This is something of a do or die weekend to get the stuff together for my recipient. I'm going up to the flea tomorrow in the hopes that my connection up there was able to source me a copy of the game with a good battery. There's some other stuff I'm looking at for them too game wise if that doesn't pan out. I would like to hold out hope that I can find something from their want list.  :P

Batteries are pretty simple to swap. Plenty of folks on here know how to do it. If a good game with a bad battery was the best you could do I'm sure one of us here on the forums could help a brutha or sista out. :)

Alright y'all, knowing my personality I could only looked at wrapped gifts for myself alone in my apartment so long before I cracked so I'll be the first to say I opened my package.

I LOVED it! Whoever got me in the secret santa did a great job! Got the perfect mix of games & goodies.

Looking at the wrapped objects I heard one rattling around, it sounded like mints in a container so I opened it first, and what do I find? Nintendo Power mints, very cool little collectible!

Next up were the two game case shaped gifts. These are a little easier to guess since I've had years of experience knowing what a wrapped DVD/game case looks like. I opened the first gift and it was Tales of Graces F! A great Tales of game that I have been looking for ever since I got into the Tales series again recently! Everything is in amazing condition.

Opening the other case I found another surprise, Tales of Zestiria! And this one was sealed! I have gone from a 1 game Tales backlog now to 3, so 2017 is going to be a Tales filled year for me that is for sure!

My most excited gift had to be the final one. Based on the wrapping it looked to be a GBA game and a manual. Being extremely careful not to rip the 'manual' while opening my gift I tore open the packaging to find ... a PS2 key ring. Arguably one of the coolest gifts I have received in recent memory and one I didn't even know existed. I'm not a big fan of Key Ring chains for my main set of keys but you better believe this thing is going straight on my gaming mantle as a keepsake, it is so cool (maybe even a future locked game room key could house this sucker).

Overall I had a great experience this year, weirdly enough being in this 2 years now I have only gotten actual games for the PS3 which I find funny. Whoever was my Santa rocked, yet still remains a mystery to me since no note or name was left with the gifts.

Thanks a bunch though Santa!!

Getting closer to being done and onto the sending out stage. I'm hoping to have it all done and in the mail this weekend. Main game that I could acquire is done. I tested it at the shop and it saved so *woohoo* non-dead battery in there. The second game from the want list was found today with the help of my cousin. Trying to find a couple more decent filler titles to toss in. I accessed my recipients Collection and it's kind of all over the place in terms of titles owned. That's not a bad thing at all though as it gives me a larger target to hit.  ;)

Already mentioned I've got the local flavor picked up and I'll be sure to include instructions on how to prepare it properly. Now that I'm thinking about it, I want to go see if I can acquire a treat to include as well.  :)

If y'all want to join the fun Retro Reload and Our Parents' Basement are going to team up for a Secret Santa Extravaganza next Tuesday!  On Dec 13th at 11:30et/8:30pt(the rest of you have to do math), RR and OPB will make a Voltron-like show to become THE RETRO BASEMENT or OUR PARENTS' RELOAD! (I like the first one better).

We're going to all join the show to open our VGC Secret Santa Presents live on the internet!  It's going to be fun.  Join us and see real jubilation when we get the perfect gift or watch fake excitement as we get stuff we marginally want!

Dec 13th at 11:30et/8:30pt live on the Retro Reload YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTyhaE8LSCmQN7fiHxHjyWg (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTyhaE8LSCmQN7fiHxHjyWg)

Hopefully all those involved in the Retro Basement Holiday Special will have gotten their gifts by then. If not, I'm still excited to watch the fun unfold!

EDIT: tafk, that's a great collection of goodies you got! You'll have to post some impressions on them when you start playing. I'm kind of jealous that you'll be experiencing Graces f for the first time.

I wish I could make it... :( although I haven't gotten my gift yet anyway so I might not even have it in time for the opening.

Also lets start a different thread where we can put pics of all the loot we get! 8)

turf - Wishlist received - Package Sent - Package Received

I'm ready for Tuesday at 10:30 Central.  That's when The Retro Basement Christmas Special airs.  I can't wait to crack this thing open.  It's big, heavy, and has plenty of girth.  Just like we like 'em

On second thought, I should probably just post pictures again. I have all of my camera equipment rented out again (should probably expand my inventory).  ;D

Apologies to my recipient for the delay but I have everything boxed up and ready to go out. I'm hoping to get it out tonight via APC or dropping by the Post Office tomorrow before work. I know it will get there before Christmas (we're geographically not too far from each other) but sorry again it has taken so long!  :(  :o

As of this morning, 100% packages have been sent. With over a week to arrive, I can almost certainly say this is going to be another completely successful VGCollect SS.

5 people so far not updated on receiving. If I missed you, let me know!
