(original post's content below)
Following in @monchrome's footsteps and his perler beads post, I decided to post up some of my gaming related artwork from over the years. Most of it is all Photoshop or Illustrator work, some from class projects and some just for kicks.

My current background for my phone. When it's bright out you can barely see the images, but when it's darker, they shine bright, it's like magic. :P
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d177/LOPWyrm/GameItems.jpg)

Security badge and name tag based on Resident Evil, I made this for a Halloween costume last year.

Original Xbox 360 Pro in Illustrator, made for a set of banners.

Nintendo Wii, also in Illustrator same as above.

Sony PS3, also in Illustrator same as above.

Resident Evil's Umbrella Corp logo desktop background. Logo built from scratch and the U in Umbrella is based off of the logo in the original movie. Which I held on pause while I was designing it.

One of my first Photoshop assignments in College. While I look at it now and see flaws, I'm still impressed with how it turned out.

NES Controller also made in Photoshop, but while on break from school.

SNES Controller, made for Illustrator class.

And finally, my arcade cab. My ultimate gaming artwork. I treated this whole process like one giant art project pushing myself to design the whole thing from scratch.

So sweet.  Very nice stuff; thanks for sharing! (I feel so lazy in comparison now :P)

Thanks! Actually I've been super lazy with artwork lately. The most activity I've done lately is all stuff for VGC, ha. I love recreating items in photoshop/ illustrator though, maybe I should get back to work on some of those again.

I love that Umbrella security pass..  and your arcade cab looks amazing!

Thanks Monochrome. A little bit of trivia about the ID badge: The barcode on the front and back is the barcode for Resident Evil: Director's Cut and it is scanable with a barcode reader. And the number at the button left corner of the back is the Item Number of the game. ha

*edit*
Oh and the address on the back is Capcom's US headquarters. :D

I was bored and feeling the FFIX love. So, I drew this picture of my favorite Final Fantasy character, Vivi! @madmax should get a kick out of it.

Vivi!\
One of my favorite FF characters ever. ^_^

He's so badass!

@madmax I love Vivi, and FFIX in general, I'd almost say it was my favorite FF, but that honor goes to VI. Loved the game so much that I made it a point to get a full set of the action figs that came out around the time of release. Actually if you look at my Game Room pics, you'll notice he's chillin' on top of my TV. :)

Decided to move my box art images to this thread, to keep the loose games thread from being too cluttered. So here are the ones so far, keep in mind, I am putting them into the 3D boxes by hand, since the action that came with the file isn't working with Photoshop 7.

All three of my GBC games have the actual box art. Id love to see some other ones though.

And sadly, obsession is a problem I have with game stuff.    :o

I think the mix of the old boxart with the new logo is cool.
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork
Post by: scott on April 20, 2012, 05:10:28 pm
Yeah me too. I was thinking of using that logo, but making it gold rather than black to help it stand out in an already black heavy layout.

...also I noticed I forgot to make the rating box say Everyone 10+ on the top section. Fail.
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork
Post by: jcalder8 on April 20, 2012, 06:22:20 pm
I think the gold text would help it stand out more, it seems too subdued in my opinion.
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork
Post by: desocietas on April 20, 2012, 07:03:38 pm
Gold would be good in contrast to the silver logo of, er... that other FF DS game I can't think of right now ;)
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork
Post by: soera on April 20, 2012, 08:29:58 pm
I agree with the gold. I think it would make the label part pop much cleaner.
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork & Custom GBA Boxes
Post by: scott on April 20, 2012, 09:43:17 pm
I agree. One problem that I have right now, is the end of the title falls off of the purple into the black on the spine. Gold would make it stand out more, I tried white, but it looks too plain.

Updated with the Golden yellow to the font and a black outline. I think that helps a lot

I think it looks better than the black but it still just looks off somehow, it could be that I don't like the way that the A is being covered up a bit but I'm not sure.
Title: Re: My Gaming Inspired Artwork & Custom GBA Boxes
Post by: scott on April 21, 2012, 10:50:14 am
As far as the A is concerned, that's just the way the newer Final Fantasy logo is designed. I played around with the color of the letters and it looked bad without an outline. I may try one more thing and outline the letters with a darker golden yellow and see what that looks like.

Oh Scott .... I have a project for you!!!

I am in the process of acquiring a reproduction GBA game and I was wondering if you could use some of your magic to create me something. The game is called Dragon Quest Monsters : Caravan Heart. Its going to be sold cart only and I really want a case to keep it in.

Here are some links to Ebay with a fair share of pics about the game. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Video-Games-/1249/i.html?_sac=1&_nkw=caravan+heart&LH_PrefLoc=2

(Btw, if anyone else is interested in giving it a shot too, thats cool. I just have seen Scott's boxes and really admire the work he has done so far)

Cool, I can work up something. I haven't had much time to knock out anymore art for my own stuff, but perhaps it will kickstart it back up. I only have my laptop with me this weekend though, so the actual work will have to wait until I get back to my desktop PC. But I'll look into it for sure.

Here it is, Soera's custom cover for Dragon Quest Monsters Caravan Heart. Took me about a week to do it, but I think it's finally completed. The border around the edge is made of all sprites of the monsters in the game. It uses the original JP release's barcode and the item number from his repro cart.

Currently working on one for Castlevania - Classic NES Series. I decided to follow in the steps of the FFVI box and go with the look of the original release's box. I'm just not sure if it needs a little something on the back or not. What do you think?

Just finished this tonight. It's the map for Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, which is almost the exact same map as Dragon Warrior II. I painted this with watercolor over the last 2.5 nights, took me a little bit to get used to watercolors again, but I think it turned out pretty alright. It's part of the giant art project that has snowballed from making that DS cover. More to come later, this is actually turning into a really fun project.

That looks great!  The text for the game's name on the side is a bit small, esp with the potion bottle kinda enlarged there.  And as for the back, I've always been a fan of the screenshots that are usually on the back of the box.  For folks who dig the front cover art but still want to know what the *actual* game looks like :)

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. The Caravan Heart project had me debating on going the full on retail mock up route and doing blurbs/screens on the back. One of the hardest parts of doing these covers has been what to do about the back of the boxes and the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of mimicking a retail box completely.

Thanks! I think now that I'm doing the backs too it'll be much easier to design new ones. The biggest issue I was having was designing the back of the box to keep it clean and interesting. But with the blurbs and such on the back it makes it look more official and they'll look even better when setting next to a DS game on the table. Between the Caravan Heart project, updating these and GF time, I hope I can get some more knocked out soonish. Next ones I have been thinking of are Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 and Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire.

I'm having a helluva time finding a CIB Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire for a reasonable price, so it's good to know you're making a box for it... You know, in case I stumble across a cheap cart-only copy...

Have you made replacement manuals for any of these games?

Nope, the only game I'm planning on making a manual for is Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart (Whenever it eventually gets translated). Other than that I'm not really interested in making replacement everything for the rest of my games. haha

New one, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. Built the logo and the checker floor from scratch. Luckily found a sweet I hi-res Raccoon Mario on the Super Mario wikia page.

Got the bug to start working on these again. So I started with an easy one to get back in the swing of things.

The Legend of Zelda - NES Classics. Like the Final Fantasy VI Advance, Super Mario 3 and Castlevania, I decided to go the route of mimicking the original release's artwork.

The Caravan Heart project morphs! I'm working on making it an actual cardboard box, rather than a DS case.

Here's a mock-up in Photoshop.

Ya it is. I'm excited to see it finished though. And I think we might actually be able to finally do so this year!
