Classic Video Games / Video Game Cartridges and End Labels
« on: November 18, 2019, 01:32:53 pm »
After purchasing my Famicom off eBay a couple weeks ago, a few of the carts I bought separate from the system itself arrived within the past week or so. Since these were early Bandai carts, when they used their own design for them, they have end labels to tell what the game is if it were stacked on a shelf. It's a shame that most third-party companies (besides Konami, Koei, and Bandai off the top of my head) never used their own style to allow for end labels. More to the point of what I made this topic to discuss, though, I realized that the US and Europe had it easy with their cartridge designs allowing for an end label. With the Super NES/Famicom, non-US carts seem not to have end labels, and the N64 doesn't have any end labels at all, regardless of region! When sorting games, this must be really annoying. Considering I grew up with an SNES I'm used to the end labels being there, so not having them seems kind of... alien to me. What about the rest of you guys? Anyone else share my sentiments on the matter?

Publisher: Shinsei or Bandai Shinsei
An alias Bandai went under in Japan for some games in order to get around the limit of how many games could be released by a third-party company in a certain time frame. I'm not sure whether any Shinsei games should get the Shinsei listing or just be credited as Bandai.
Example games:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/562974-saint-seiya-ougon-densetsu-kanketsu-hen - Note that the page credits Bandai, but the box uses the Shinsei dolphin logo and the copyright on the title screen is attributed to Shinsei.

Developer: Power Pro Productions/Pawapuro Productions

This is the alias that Diamond Head rebranded to in 2004 with the release of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 11 and 11 Chou Ketteiban. They have since been absorbed into Konami Computer Entertainment Japan.

A note on naming these entries, see your edit history.
example....
Title: Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 11
alt-name: original japanese, Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu Pawapuro 11

So the edits for those other titles were rejected because the alt-name was not done properly.

Okay, so as long as I move that to alt-name we'll be fine, in the future. Noted. ^^

Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu '98 - Kaimakuban

Original: https://vgcollect.com/item/123538
Dupe: https://vgcollect.com/item/132190

Notes: The romanization of the game would be Yakyuu, not Yakyou. Kyou is a different syllable altogether, and is commonly confused, partially due to the hiragana for the syllables "yu" and "yo" being written similarly.

I normally play games either on Easy or Normal, depending on the game. The only real exception that I do is for a game that doesn't give you the good ending unless you're on the highest difficulty, in which case I give it a fair shot first, but then if I get to the point where I'm pissed off at the game or have been spending too much time on it I will use cheats, but ONLY infinite lives, because anything else would not be fair in general. I usually also crank the lives up to max if the game lets you change that.

As an example I'm playing Danganronpa on Gentle difficulty (Easy), but I also consult the DR Wiki if I need any hints on free-time events or class trials.

Densha de Go! [PS1]

https://vgcollect.com/item/35454
https://vgcollect.com/item/56855 <---- This is the dupe.

The second page, while correct, is newer than the first page; however, since the first page has more information, as well as being closer to the agreed schema for PS1 games, I believe we should salvage the item number from the second page as the Taito Serial, and either merge the pages so people with the second page will be able to keep it in their lists or erase the second page entirely. I don't know what way would be the better solution. The name for the dupe page is also wrong anyways, because they're going off of the name given on the right spine of the jewel case (Densya de Go!), whereas the name of the game in Romaji is "Densha de Go!" I believe the disconnect with the name/pronunciation is both related to how Taito printed the name on the jewel case spines, as well as how it is pronounced, because the kanji, which consists of the sounds shi and ya (shi-ya) is pronounced as sha. It's confusing, I'm sure, but this is also probably more than necessary to explain why the pages should be merged.

The Japanese versions of Rockman X Anniversary Collection; both 1 and 2 do. They default the game choices to the Japanese language, but you can set the menu language and specific game languages to whatever you desire. I have the menu text to English, but all games in Japanese, as for the games on PS1/PS2 in their original releases I prefer the Japanese voice cast. What's more, the Japanese releases keep the licensed music for X4 and X5, as well as X7 and X8. I believe X6 is the only one unchanged in that regard for the collection in other territories, but besides that, everything is shared between both regions apart from the aforementioned music licensing. What's more, X7 and X8 also include (text only, I believe) multi-language variants that would correspond to their European releases (with the lazily put-together logo, if you believe it to be so).

Video Game Database Discussion / Doki Doki Panic - Naming Confusion?
« on: April 01, 2019, 01:21:26 pm »
https://vgcollect.com/item/19431

The item found above sort of confuses me. The listing only says Doki Doki Panic, whereas the game's full title is Yume Koujou Doki Doki Panic. Why is that? Is it assuming that people are only going to search Doki Doki Panic instead of the full name?

Modern Video Games / Re: How much longer do you think the 3DS has?

Anyone else picking up the new-ish Kirby game on the 3DS this week?

Probably not right away, I know it's doubtful Nintendo games will ever get a price drop, but this is a port of Epic Yarn to the 3DS, and I have the Wii version so it's not on my radar for now.

Modern Video Games / How much longer do you think the 3DS has?
« on: February 27, 2019, 12:50:14 pm »
Since Pokémon Sword and Shield were announced for Switch during the Pokémon direct this morning, I personally think that at this point, once they come out late this year the 3DS will be nothing short of dead.

Now, there's a couple reasons why I think this is the case.

  • Mario Kart 7, while a good game in its own right, is now dwarfed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Need I say any more about this one?
  • Pokemon Sword and Shield - Mind you, I know it's too early to tell, but I feel like interest in the system might wane because of this.
  • Super Mario Party.

Granted, I know some people used to think the same thing for the GameCube, Wii and Wii U but, Melee aside (which itself has been dethroned from Evo this year), the emulation and homebrew scene are probably keeping the system slightly alive. To be fair, I'm also a bit pessimistic sometimes so I always jump to the worst possible outcomes. Regardless, what about you guys? What do you think? Does the 3DS stand much of a chance anymore now that the Switch has a lot of games on it worth playing? How much longer (in terms of years) does the 3DS have?
