Here is a new discussion that may eventually lead to a poll.

Should we consider allowing image padding on tall images?

Currently the style guide has this to say about images:
Quote
Images should be as high-res as possible, and without extra blank space on the sides

Which means that the subjects of images should be cropped to the subject's edges. Due to the way that:
1. Images look on item entries
2. How the site sizes images that are too tall

We end up having some entries that look bad on the entry page, in a category list and in the dynamic signature.
Should we consider allowing white-space for images in certain situations?

Tall Images
Tall Images are where the problem is. Because the site resizes to width, it can make really tall images. Also, if you end up posting an image with less than 200 px width, the site will enlarge the image to match the 200 px width, potentially making an image taller than originally, and not only that will make it blurry.

The Sega Stereo Audio Video Cable is a classic example of an entry with too tall images. However, these images meet the requirements laid out in the style guide, perhaps with the exception of the high resolution.

In comparison, I ran across this entry when cleaning up the Wii Accessory category, and thought that if I had replaced the front image with one that meet the requirements of the style guide, it would not be as good. So I left it as is so it could be used as an example in this thread.
PowerA Ultra Sensor Bar (white)

Compare that to the image for the Wii U sensor bar: PowerA Ultra Sensor Bar (Black).

We could use a minimum height to calculate padding, perhaps a ratio can be decided.

Post what you think.

News / Australian Ratings fixed in the database
« on: June 12, 2020, 09:34:39 am »
For years now, the ratings drop-down had an incorrect rating selection for Australia. It showed OFLC - rating (Australia) with most of ACB's ratings.

We have changed these options to ACB from OFLC, rather than changing the ratings to the OFLC ratings.
You can find details about ACB and Australian ratings here:

News / Advanced Style Guide update and feedback thread
« on: June 09, 2020, 12:07:11 pm »
I've been working on a more advanced Style Guide. This shows up as a forum section.
This is not meant to replace the existing one, but to help explain some of the details in how entries should be handled. If you want more details, go into there. The current Style Guide isn't going anywhere, this is just to supplement it.
The goal is to not only provide examples of specific things, but also get rid of any "unwritten rules" that we follow but were never put into the Style Guide thread in the VGDB section. It will also be used to layout the different releases and overall variations, tied to a database category.

It is currently in progress and not yet ready for mainstream, although the information is correct.

It has been visible to site staff for awhile now, but this post is being made to announce that we have enabled PRO members to see the section. This is done because we want feedback on it before we roll it out for everyone.

Information looking for:
- any photo examples to use where photo examples do not exist. If you have a photo example of a different entry than is highlighted, we can change it, but the entry must be correct before we can link to it.
- if something is not written out well, too long or not long enough.
- anything on the existing posts that was missed.

After the Advanced Style Guide has been completed, it will be set so all members can see it. And the individual category threads will be added as time goes on.

Thread title history:
- Pro Members can see the Advanced Style Guide
- All Members can see the Advanced Style Guide
- Advanced Style Guide update and feedback thread

Currently there is only 1 listing for the original orange/purple V.Smile console:
https://vgcollect.com/item/43709

This is a generic listing and will need to be changed to a specific model, likely the Alphabet Park Adventure 057.
We need to figure out how these should be named. At first glance, it would appear that our regular console naming method, or the one used for Sony consoles, isn't going to work.

I have done some research and there are at least 5 versions of the console itself, but numerous boxes. To make matters worse, it appears that EU and US consoles may have come in the same box. Here is what I'm come up with:

VTech V.Smile - Alphabet Park Adventure
https://ebay.com/itm/382896972810
https://ebay.com/itm/202818406891
https://ebay.com/itm/283829155953
Orange case/purple lid/English text
console model: 53-36400-057-080 NTSC
https://ebay.com/itm/202890476904

VTech V.Smile - Alphabet Park Adventure (2005 T.O.T.Y.)
https://ebay.com/itm/174253296522
https://ebay.com/itm/223835114738

VTech V.Smile - Alphabet Park Adventure (2005 T.O.T.Y.)
box model: 80-61220
UPC: 050803612207
https://ebay.com/itm/184221727211

VTech V.Smile - Alphabet Park Adventure (2005 T.O.T.Y.)
console model: 53-36400-062-080 PAL
https://ebay.com/itm/293538459726

VTech V.Smile - Scooby-Doo! Funland Frenzy / Alphabet Park Adventure Limited Edition (2005 T.O.T.Y.)
https://ebay.com/itm/283890839275

Vtech V.Smile - Soccer Challenge
https://ebay.com/itm/224023247668

The two Alphabet Park 2005 TOTY packs above that are not the PAL listing are likely the same thing, but I cannot confirm it.
In addition to the packs above, that do not have the consoles attached, I can confirm these:

Orange case/purple lid/English Text
console model: 53-36400-078-080 NTSC
https://ebay.com/itm/124157158217
https://ebay.com/itm/123381779232

Orange case/purple lid/English Text
console model: 53-36400-105-080 NTSC
https://ebay.com/itm/274347744656

Orange case/purple lid/French Text

These should all be able to be tied to the boxes. I did not save the itm number for the French console.

I did find one instance of a loose purple case/orange lid
https://ebay.com/itm/223847256765

The orange with the silver cart slot insert is sold in boxes and in a tub with the mark "New and Improved"
There is also a release with a gray cart slot insert

If there are any resources or sites that track the information on these consoles, post them into there so we can see if we can get these releases figured out.

News / Ongoing Arcade category re-work
« on: May 15, 2020, 11:37:55 am »
The Arcade section of the database is getting a rework. The three main sections for arcade hardware are as follows:
Arcade Boards (was Arcade Conversion) :
This section is for arcade game PCBs and system boards such as Sega NAOMI or Neo Geo MVS, etc.
Items should be named according to official documentation. For example, the Sega NAOMI mainboard is called the Sega NAOMI Shield Case.

Arcade Cabinets (was Arcade Dedicated) :
This is for all cabinets, either originally dedicated or converted.
Dedicated or retail cabinets should be named as they are on the game's manual.
Example: The House of the Dead 2 (U/R Type)
https://vgcollect.com/item/166848

Arcade Hardware (new category) :
This is for all non-game, non-mainboard items. Be it converters, add-on devices, power supplies, or parts from cabinets, etc.
Items should be named as they are in the relevant official documentation, as best as it can be done.
Examples, at the time of writing this post, this category has the Sega NAOMI Communication Board and Net Dimm, these are components that are part of a Sega NAOMI or NAOMI 2 mainboard, or included within a conversion kit.

Each of the cartridge or disc based games will have their own categories, and these categories are just for those components. There should be no cabinet listings in these sections.

We are considering creating additional categories for:
- arcade marquees (for marquees, bezels and pinball backglass/translites)
- arcade manuals
- pinball hardware (for non-machine parts)

Currently, a marquee or flyer should not be used in any of the art slots for an item in the arcade category.

News / New Forum Groups
« on: February 04, 2020, 10:44:09 am »
We are working on creating new groups for Site and Forum staff. This is an attempt to clearly indicate the particular roles that people hold, to make it easier to know who to talk to for what. Since the forum was started, anyone who did anything with the site is just marked as "Administrator" and for many it gives a false impression that we can all do the same thing.

In the coming days, you will see some different group icons on user's posts. Desocietas was the first to get changed over and is a Global Mod. Other groups that will be revealed are DB Admin and Market Mod.

We also have created a new group called Patron that ex-site staff and founding members will be placed into.

Video Game Database Discussion / Duplicate List 2021
« on: January 02, 2020, 10:37:11 am »
Use this thread to post duplicate items in the database so that DB staff can merge or remove the entries.

Post the name of the item that is duplicated, along with the links to each of the items.

Once you have made your post, do not edit it later to add content. Make a new reply if possible or save all of the items you want to post for one post. Editing your post to add new content can cause a problem if a DB admin is actively working in this thread.

After a dupe post has been processed, a DB admin will use the Strikeout text effect on the duplicate links, so that you and we know that the report has been looked at.

Video Game Database Discussion / Error Listings and rejected edits 2021
« on: January 02, 2020, 10:32:34 am »
Use this topic to report issues with Items. Examples include:
- Items with mismatching pictures/information
- Physical item cancelled and not released
- Item has watermarked or photoshopped images
- Invalid items in the database
- Any concerns about rejected edits
- Any explanations about an edit you want to do so that it won't be rejected

When you post about an item, include the current title, a link to the item in question and a description for the report. Do not edit posts to add additional content to it, make a new post instead.

When a report is processed, a member of DB staff will use the strikeout text effect on the link so that you, and we, know that the item has been handled already.

Report Duplicate items into the Duplicate Items thread here:
