Title: Who deleted your epic save file?
Post by: george on April 04, 2012, 12:58:37 pm
Was it the Mad Katz memory card for your PS1? Or maybe it was your roomate?

Either way, I'm sure we've all lost that epic save file. Mine was FF7. I did everything in that game. I could kill Sephiroth  without even touching my controller. My guys were that bad ass.

I accidentally deleted my friend's Madden season and his way of paying me back was deleting my FF7 save file. Ugh. At that point I had the save file for several years, but still. Madden save file is less than FF7 Ultimate save file!

Friend in college. As a laugh, I'd brought my SNES from home and most of my games. We'd all started having a good time with Mario Kart and all that.

Two of us start a new file on DKC and use most of the semester going through every level, over and over, determined to get 101% without a guide. This is my game when I was a kid as well, so I had my 101% from when I was young too.

Anyway, we finally achieve the 101 and show a friend of ours who had been a doubter that we could do it. He comes in, goes "whatever!" and, assuming we've rigged the TV or something to show the complete (we were all Comp Sci majors), pulls the game out of the SNES, with it still on. The screen goes black and he goes "Holy hell! You DID do it!"...but when we put the game back in and turned it back on, it was like a brand new cart, wiped clean.

No epic saves of mine were ever lost. The only times some of my save files were deleted not on purpose were:
1. When I started playing FF7, my sister used the playstation to play a game, and somehow, along the way, managed to get to the memory card options and deleted my save by error... and then she was PISSED at me for being unhappy that she did so. I was at the end of the first disc.

2. There's this one time my PS2 fell on the floor while I was playing FF9 (I was at the final battle of the first disc). It was about a six feet drop (the second time it took such a drop). All the save files on my PS1 memory card got corrupted, and I could never save on that memory card again. At least PS2 games/memory cards still worked fine.

I've lost many a save file to third party memory cards, that I now Only buy 1st party memory cards. Also, my PS3 wiped my Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES file on me. I was about 10 hours in. I also accidentally overwrote my impressive GTA IV save by saving over it when I started up The Lost and Damned DLC.

I used to rent SNES games at a local rental shop.

The owner always. ALWAYS. Deleted any progress whenever you returned the game. I had to rent the games for a week in order to complete them. Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy IV, Earthbound... all cleared in a week.

He was kind of a dick like that.

My cousin's dog got a hold of one of his PS2 memory cards once, this one happened to have his Final Fantasy X file on it and he was near Max level with most of the ultimate weapons and aeons. Pretty sure it was his longest save file ever. Anyway, dog teeth and drool destroyed it and he's never played FFX since.

Nothing compares to my 3 year old Logan. He will delete everything. He has so far erased 100+ hours of Skyrim, weeks of MK, downloaded games (had to reconnect to the servers that sold them and redownload everything). He has erased every save on my DS as well.

My PS3s shit cooling system. The games aren't wiped but the console doesn't work anymore. Its been revived so many times that I don't think I can revive it for long enough to transfer my saved games to another ps3. I've got my FF7, FF9, 100+ hour gran turismo 5. 90% just cause 2 and more in there.

In Elementary school a friend and I deleted his older brother's Zelda file to try a code to see the second quest. I don't think he even played it after we did it but I did feel bad about it when the second quest wasn't anything that amazing.

Me. So.. I was playing the original .hack series, right? I'd cleared INFECTION and MUTATION and was moving on to OUTBREAK. The games take roughly 25 hours a piece, depending on how much of the Book of 1000 stuff you do - and I had done most of it, as far as you could in INFECTION/MUTATION, so I was sitting at around 55-60 hours.

Anyway. I boot up OUTBREAK, do the data import, watch the intro and go to save. It creates the save container and I leave the room to eat dinner or something. I come back, don't feel like playing, so I reboot the PS2 and go into the memory card manager to delete my MUTATION data, seeing as each one of those damn things takes 1/8 of the card.

The next day I booted up OUTBREAK to find.. nothing. I was an idiot and didn't actually save in OUTBREAK, just made the container. And with having deleted my MUTATION data... yep, I'd just pissed away 60 hours.

So I started over. From INFECTION. When I was finally done with QUARANTINE, my timer was at 100 hours, and I've since replayed INFECTION and MUTATION again.. so I've played around 200 hours of .hack.

Mine was also a FF7 save.  I had spent so many hours breeding and racing Chocobos so i could get the ultimate gold choco and grinded up my party to a pretty high level. All i had left to do was to defeat Sephiroth. So i took my official Sony memory card to a friends house to show off my sweet gold chocobo and i popped it in and there was nothing on the card. It was completely erased. 90+ hours down the toilet.

I just had it in my front pocket for 20min and i dont remember passing any super magnets or anything. Seems like that game is just bad luck to save files.

I had one specific memory card I kept all my RPG data on.  I had either completed or near completed game saves for, Parasite Eve, Valkyrie Profile, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of Fire III & IV, Final Fantasy V, VI, VII, VIII, Saga Frontier 2, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean: The Second Story, and Legend of the Dragoon.

A supposed friend of mine swiped the card when he was at my house and I thought I could trust him.  When I later found the card at his house the next day.  He had cleared everything off it.  I'm talking hundreds of hours of data, gone.  Just to be replaced by replay videos for Gran Turismo 2. Then had the gall to lie to me about where he obtained the card.
Yeah you just pick up a clear green Mad Katz memory card with your friends name carved into it at any local pawn shop, I do it all the time.  >:(

To this day 11 years later I still haven't even gotten a quarter of that data back.  I think I have 3 games completed.  I am still pissed at him for that.

On a side note that same SOB boosted my Final Fantasy Chronicles and Mega Man Legends, about 6 years ago.  When I loned them to my brother.   Yeah this ass hat is my most favoritist person on the whole freaking planet!!!

Sorry for the rage.  It just gets my blood boiling to think about that.   :-[

I couldnt imagine a friend stealing from me. That would be pretty low. I used to do that too (keep all my saves on one special card) but I got out of that habit quickly.

@ffxik, that really sucks! I can't believe that your brother would still hang out with him after that. If someone steal from me I'd cut him out of my life.

After the incident with the games he doesn't.  However the nimrod in question made it a point to move into the town I'm living in.  Ironically he lives 200 yards right up the road from me.  Needless to say everythime I leave the house now I get really uneasy.

So did I  ;)

These days, I use save backup programs on the PC to make sure my save data is never lost. I use a homebrew program on the PS2 to copy my saves to a USB drive.
