Perler beads are round, plastic beads that you place on a pegboard to create an image, then cover with parchment paper and iron to melt the beads together into a solid picture. Here is what I have done so far (click on thumbnail for larger picture):
-
This. Awesome.
-
Have you ever seen Sprite Stitch? It's a community of video game crafters....and we've got tons of Perler/Hama bead crafters on there!
The forums are really where everyone shows off their work, but the main site is:
http://www.spritestitch.com
-
Valis!!
Nice stuff, love the Donkey Kong and the Earthworm Jim in particular. One of my friends got into perler bead art for a while, but I think he got bored of it (he made some cool stuff though, including a few Kirby sprites). I'd never have the patience to do this.
-
Man that Ryu one just gave me a nerd boner. Any of these for sale?
-
Thanks everyone!

I have been lurking there for awhile as a guest, but haven't got around to registering yet. I will soon, I promise!

Thanks so much, it is probably my favorite one I've done so far. As of now, I am not selling them. But I have, surprisingly, been asked this question quite a bit lately. I'll keep you up to date if I change my mind. I need to look at the tax stuff, because I already have at least one person inquiring about a very large piece.
Here is my latest, finished last night:
Enguarde the swordfish, from Donkey Kong Country.
I get the original sprite sheets for most of these from spriters-resource.com, by the way. Then it's just a matter of blowing them up and putting a grid on them.
-
ENGUARDE! Love that damn fish.
-
Awesome man! I've done a few of these myself, but nothing as elaborate as a 16bit sprite... I stick to my 8bit roots. lol
Adol from Ys NES sprite
Bomberman II NES sprite
Chip NES sprite
*EDIT*
WTH! are img links broken?
-
@pceslayer I fixed your post w/ html img tags. I've had this same issue w/ some of my posts, and have found the bbcode fails miserably.
edit- Also, the Chip is great. Love me some Rescue Rangers.
-
bbcode fails miserably.
Looking into this. They should both work.
-
Ah, Chip 'n Dale .. what a great NES game! I've been meaning to make a Duck Tales sprite, though it's common; also a great game.
Here are my newest:
Jubilee, a support character in Marvel vs Capcom. 19 inches tall.
Silverhawk from Darius Twin.
Phantasy Star Online coasters. Featuring pallette symbols: (top row)monomate, weak attack, monofluid (bottom row) barta, foie, and zonde.
-
Raiden mk-II from Raiden Fighters
-
awesome raiden one! where did you get the sprite?
-
http://spriters-resource.com/arcade/raidenfighters/sheet/26756
spriters-resource.com has a ton of great sprite sheets! I get most of my source material there.
-
Cacodemon, DOOM (pc). Approx. 12 inch diameter.
Original sprite sheet found: http://spriters-resource.com/pc_computer/Doom1n2/sheet/27868 ripped by Ultimecia.

Thanks, she is a great kisser too! :x
Landis/Duran from Lords of Thunder (Turbo Duo/Sega CD/Wii Virtual Console) donning Wind Armor.
-

I was playing LoT on my Duo just the other day and made it to the last boss... he beat my ass in 30 seconds! :/

Metal Sonic from Knuckles Chaotix
Mega Man X 2 victory pose in full armor

These are awesome. My girlfriend isn't really into videogames (she'll play a little with me but gets bored quickly). I know she likes perler beads, I'm definately going to show her this. It'll give us some common ground in terms of hobbies :D

Some of us have been chatting about CC, so thought this would be of interest to many:

Ha, just found this one:
This GamerGrrlz has some talent! http://www.flickr.com/photos/21634085@N06/
-
HAHA! She's a Sprite Stitcher from back in the day when we were all getting the forums started. She has her own site and features a bunch of stuff, but she does a LOT of Sailor Moon.

Big Blue Boo from Super Mario World
Made with glow-in-the-dark beads. Approx 12 inch diameter

Glow in the dark! Sweet! Any plans to make a shy Boo?
-
I was thinking the same about shy boo :)
Good thinking with the glow in the dark, looks awesome.
-
I love shy Boo... cutest character ever.
-
Glow in the dark! Sweet! Any plans to make a shy Boo?
As in the 'covering his face' version of a boo? I could make a small one.. Glow in the dark beads are sold in mixed bags so I had to buy a bunch more bags just to get enough blue to make this one. Now I have a ton of leftover glow orange and red. blah
Mecha Sonic
-
Nice! Just in time for the Sonic CD release!
-
Ken teaching the art of down, down-forward, forward + Punch

-
How big is that wolverine?!
-
@madmax most trading cards are roughly 3.5" tall. So I'd wager it's about 15" tall? ha
-
How big is that wolverine?!
Scott was close, but the picture was taken at an angle, and he is actually about 18" tall, and 20" from clawtip to clawtip.
-
Those are super impressive. If you ever decide to take requests for sale, let me know!
-
Thanks, soera.. I'll be sure to let you know if I decide to start selling online. Meanwhile, here is a little something I've been working on..
Still making the rest of him..
-
and.. here he is

Wow that's very impressive, how big is he?

-
@soera I actually have one or two DQ ones I was given so I'll try and get a picture of them for you. I think they are very well done.

Since this thread has been bumped, where are the pics?! :)
I can see them, can anyone else not?
Or did I miss something?
-
I'm pretty sure soera was directing that to me for not taking a picture of my DW ones. I did forget until I saw the thread bumped back up. I will try and get one tonight.
-
Yep! I can see the ones you made Monochrome.
-
Awesome!!! Those are great :D
My one question, how do you not get the paper to stick to your beads when melting them with an iron?
Whenever I have tried this in the past my beads get stuck to the paper and some of them peel off :-\
Also here is one I made a while back!

Hey, awesome Tails! I still need to make one of him and Knuckles..
As to your question: are you using ironing paper? You can also use parchment paper (sometimes called baking paper) but don't ever use wax paper!! If you use ironing or parchment paper, the beads should separate from it as they cool down.
-
Ahhhh ok thats my problem! I am using wax :p
Thanks a bunch!! I'm probably going to get back into this again then :]]]

Thanks, first of all! I'd say I spent around 11 to 12 hours on this one. It was alot easier do to having large areas of solid color. I display many of the ones I've made, however I also have a box full of extraneous sprites I've made that I don't have wall space for. This includes many of the Castlevania and Donkey Kong Country ones. I like to have sprites from a variety of games adorning the walls.. so when I go crazy over a certain sub-set (like space shooters) I tend to have a few that go in the box.
I have given or traded away several sprites to friends (including the big Sub-Zero portrait, Ken, all the Mega Man 2 bosses, The Legend of Zelda wall hang).
