Title: Anime Recommendation?
Post by: darko on September 19, 2011, 02:44:01 pm
I've never really been a big anime guy but I've watched a few (Death Note, Blood, Ghost in the Shell, Monster, and Last Exile). Death Note is probably my favorite. I recently started watching Claymore which I find quite enjoyable but there's only one season. Does anyone have any recommendations that would be similar to one of these?

I watch a lot of anime. I've not seen Death Note or Blood yet. Ghost in the Shell is one of my top favorites, If you haven't make sure to watch the Stand Alone Complex series. Cowboy Bebop is also one of my all time favorites, I highly recommend it. You should also check out Outlaw Star, Fullmetal Alchemist (original series or Brotherhood), Samuari Champloo is also good samurai action, as is Gantz for over the top sci-fi gore. Also make sure to watch Akira.

Fullmetal Alchemist (original series or Brotherhood)

One of my favorites.  Trying to watch Brotherhood as I know the ending is supposed to be more accurate, but it's hard to watch the beginning as some of my favorite scenes have been changed even though it's virtually the same.  Somehow, I prefer the animation/look of the original while Brotherhood looks a little simplified.  Maybe Brotherhood matches the visuals of the manga? (I haven't gotten far enough in the manga to know.)

Oh ya, Elfen Lied is amazing. The 1st 10 minutes is the most brutal I've seen ever.

I love Brotherhood, it seems to have more badassness to it than the original series. It follows the manga, much, much closer too (and has more Barry the Chopper!)

Pretty much everything @scott mentioned I would recomend. Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell are some of my all time favorites. Hellsing is quite good, the Ultimate OVAs are better and stick more to the manga's story than the original TV series but they are both good. Almost anything by Gainax is pretty good. Neon Genesis Evangelion is really good if you can manage to deal with the mind screw plot. As are FLCL, Gurren Lagann and Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water. There are a few more I could recommend but that should give you a pretty good start.

Oh ya I forgot to mention Neon Genesis Evangelion, on of my favs  but you totally need to pay attention to what is going on. Neo Ranga is pretty good too.

If you want to go the darker route, there's always "Lain" and the Twin Peaks-ish "Paranoia Agent" by Satoshi Kon (both are short series).

I haven't watched a whole lot of recent anime(currently only watching Kaiji season 2), but here's a few of my favorites (I'll just ignore the whole "that would be similar to one of these" part :P) :

Great Teacher Onizuka
Akagi
Kaiji (it's really slow at points but it's really good)
Detroit Metal City (it's super short but damn funny)
Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi)
FLCL
Baccano!
Cowboy Bebop
Excel Saga
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Welcome to the NHK!

I've seen over 300 anime series (yeah, I used to have no life) so I might be missing a few, but those are probably my favorites (ignoring One Piece since that would be way too damn long to watch all of it from the beginning).

Wow. Looks like I have plenty to check out! I've actually seen quite a bit of Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist. I like both but I like the darker stuff better (not that Last Exile is dark).

I've seen the Stand Alone Complex series too (guess I should have specified). I was sick for a week a few years ago and just sat around and watched all of the Ghost in the Shell series. It was really awesome. That's actually what got me into Blood and Last Exile since they were all on Netflix at the time.

I actually forgot to mention that I've watched Wolf's Rain (I think that's what it's called). I enjoyed it but it's been a long time since I saw it.

@scott Death Note is really, really awesome. You should check it out for sure.

If you like darker stuff I might also recommend Speed Grapher. I've only seen the first few episodes but what I watched of it was pretty dark but good.

@darko, ha ya I've been meaning to check out Death Note for a while now. I just watched both seasons of Girls Bravo, really, really funny stuff. If not a bit over-the-top with "fan service". Still really funny and horrible humor, like Shuffle!. After that I started re-watching Samurai Champloo again. 1 thing I love about netflix recently is the ability to check out anime without dropping a ton of cash, only to find out it's not your cup of tea.

yeah. I first started watching it and was like "wtf am I watching?" but the story builds up really quickly. I liked the depth they gave the main characters, lots of story behind them. Even through the gore and brutallity, there's a good story.

It's funny that everyone goes right to FMA...that's the one that was popular when I was in Japan so it's been my favorite for years.

I've watched very little current anime even though I have been watching through Brotherhood now that Netflix has the first 39 episodes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Code Geass; I used to love that one. Also Hellsing, of course (even though it's only 13 episodes).

It's just a feature-length film, but I though Tekkon Kinkreet was a beautiful anime.  I'm also a big fan of the other Satoshi Kon movies besides Paranoia Agent (Paprika, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, etc.)... RIP.

Mobile Police Patlabor.

It's cops. With bigass robots. But that's not the main part of the show, that's the interpersonal relationships between the officers, their families, and their daily lives.

The movies, on the other hand, have a wildly different tone... more action oriented, much more mature than the TV show.

I'll also be looking into others recommendations. I watch a lot of different genres of anime and am always keen to check out something new. I think Noir is next up.

This is such an obvious recommendation that I wonder if putting it here will just induce eye-rolling, but here goes.

Vampire Hunter D:  Bloodlust

It's a feature film.  It needs to be seen by everyone, everywhere.

Also secondsy's on Elfen Lied, though I always feel like a pervert watching it for some reason.  Maybe it's the box art.

One I really like is Godannar, a giant robot series that is kind of a light-hearted parody version (or "knock-off" if you will) of Evangelion.  It's got alot of cheeky fan service, but the robot vs creature combat segments are amazingly entertaining.  The interplay between all the characters is hilariously melodramatic.  This isn't the 'dark and moody' stuff you are looking for, though.  I just like putting it out there!

Also, Giant Robo.  Great stuff.  I have a thing for giant robots.

Bonus Points for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust: It's got DTS sound. Maybe not a big deal now, but when I got my receiver, I think that's the first movie I had that had it.

Well I finished Paranoia Agent last night. If I wasn't forced to watch every second (to read the subtitles) I would have been completely lost by the end. I liked it. I thought the ending was a little meh, but it's an interesting and entertaining one for sure.

Does anyone know anything about Blassreiter? It sounds like it's right up my alley.

I know :/ I watched it back when I had roommates and they thought I was watching somekind of Japanese children Hentai. They always walked by at the wrong time as well <.<

Still worth watching though xD To clarify, there's nothing really sexual in the show.

Other than the whole, awkward, boob grabbing scene in the 2nd or 3rd episode. Ha

Also,  I didn't really feel perverted watching it, thanks to all the over the top ultra-violence. On the other hand, Girls Bravo and Shuffle! did, but I was laughing the entire time so I didn't care.

I thought about that but it's presented in such a comedic way that you can't help laugh at the situation :p

although I was a little disturbed by the whole cousin loving a cousin. is that normal in japan?

I have no idea, but that seemed really strange to me too. To make it worse, in the manga, they end up married with a daughter name Nyu, ha.

I'm glad you liked PA!  I'm not always sure how people will respond to it.  Definitely not an anime to watch while doing anything else.

I like almost anything thought provoking. I actually had it on my mind most of the day and looked up some various (alternate to my own) interpretations of the story. I haven't done that with anything I've seen in several years. Quite interesting.

I started watching Ergo Proxy last week and it's pretty cool so far (I'm on episode 5). I also started watching Blue Exorcist last night and I'm really enjoying it.

Ah, a topic I am very fond of!  All the series and movies recommended thus far are very good.  A few others that I have not seen mentioned but I recommend of are Chobits (man loves female computer...odd), Samurai 7 (good old-fashioned swordplay), Hell Girl (good for fans of Death Note), Initial D (for the boy racer in me), and High School of the Dead (lotta violence, lotta cursing, and boatloads of booby and crotch shots, so beware!)  My son is partial to Soul Eater (haven't seen it yet) and Witch Hunter Robin, and my daughter (10 years old, mind you) likes Love Hina and Kaleido Star.  Anime: a family diversion! LOL

I can't seem to remember another one I watched several years ago. It's a ghost story and I believe the main character is a photographer or writer or something similar. It's really violent and I remember something about a little girl dying or being murdered in a small village inside of a storage shed/barn type building. That's really all I can distinctly remember, other than a ton of people being killed.

Anyone have an idea of what I'm blathering on about?

@darko What did you think of the ending? It kind of left me with a big wtf look on my face. I want to read the manga now, but I can't seem to find any info on an English release...

btw, if you haven't you should watch GANTZ if you want to see some brutality, ha.

Yeah, I think they could have closed things up a little better. They were obviously leaving everything open for another season.

The manga is bigger, mainly because the anime series was started before the manga was finished.  There are quite a few characters in the manga that were left out of the anime series.  I don't recall ever seeing an English translation of the manga, but I cheated: I found a Spanish translation!

I've been blasting through Steins;Gate in the last few days... It's actually pretty cool. But then again I love stories about time travel. It starts out kinda wacky, but it explores some interesting time travel theories and it does become quite serious as it goes on.
Also, it's loosely based on an event back in 2000 on the internet where someone posted on various forums claiming to have been from the future (search for "John Titor", it's rather strange).

Yeah... we'll see in 4 years if the World War he "predicted" happens :P I just think it was some guy having a bit of fun on the internet.
But yeah, knowing about the guy before watching Steins;Gate isn't required, I just think it's a nice touch to include this internet "event" in the show's narrative.

That one is part of the Brotherhood version. But I'm sure it's filled with badassness. The way that article reads makes it sound like it's just a side story, unlike Conqueror of Shamballa which acted as a finale to the series.

Thanks, @scott!  Though now I just got word about a docfest in town that includes, amongst other things of interest, a documentary on the 2010 Tetris Championships.  I think a lot of my movie-going money will be going to this festival...

I'm getting this in the mail soon!  I paid less than $8 (including shipping) on eBay... which is good because I've owned it before and didn't want to pay a lot to replace it.

@scott, King of Kong is soooo good.  What does Billy have to be such a d%uche?  I love nerdy documentaries and am definitely looking forward to the Tetris one.

Ha, love this bit from Wikipedia:
[Director] Gordon has claimed to have painted Billy Mitchell as a lighter character than his real life persona concerning the movie. Gordon also claims that Billy Mitchell is "so much worse than we painted him out to be," but he chose to only include scenes that were necessary to tell the story, because the movie would have been "darker" had he not played with the facts.

"There’s a potential Donkey Kong kill screen, If you wanna watch." I actually know the guy that said that, went to junior high and high school with him. He came across in the movie the same as he was in school. I've never met Billy Mitchell but a friend of mine who attends a lot of classic gamer shows has, he says he is a dick.

As for anime, I just finished the Second Stage of Initial D last night. I don't know a lot about anime but Netflix streaming has quite a bit of it.

I've watched a lot anime, and I have a lot of anime. Makes you wonder how I have time to play video games.

Seriously though, I think any anime lover needs to get on this site because once you've made your database, you realize how much of your life has been "wasted" on TV, and how much more you have yet to watch.
Title: Re: Anime Recommendation?
Post by: desocietas on October 24, 2011, 03:17:36 pm
I like anime, but I think the hardest part for me is picking what to watch.  It's overwhelming what's out there, and I'm not always interested by the concepts/plots to continue with a series.  Anime is hard in the sense that there are so many kinds, much like live action films, that it'd help if there were specified genres that people go by.  Does this happen?  The only categorization I've really seen is more director/creator-focused, but this undermines the one-offs that are notable.

I kind of feel the same, it was worse when i had to buy as I went, so trying something new was hard to decide on. Thanks to netflix streaming though, I've watched a bunch of anime that I've never thought of buying due to the "unsure factor".
