Title: Super Smash Bros
Post by: kamikazekeeg on December 11, 2020, 06:29:03 am
New thread time with Sephiroth getting announced for Smash Bros.  Comes out this month, I heard he is getting his big gameplay reveal video on the 17th, so good chance he's released that day or right before Christmas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJo25Dtglbo

Super awesome, the game needed more villains added for sure, and he is a very notable one to add, especially with the FF7 Remake out this year, so it's just perfect.

That being said, who should fill the last three spots of this pack? It could be the last one, we don't know, but as it is, there are three slots left.  Who should we think needs to be in? With Monster Hunter Rise out next year, I think Monster Hunter is a must.  I mean there is a stage and a Rathalos in the game already, get a Hunter in there! The alts could be 2 or 3 armor sets with both male and female versions.    Move set would be all the weapon sets, and I would have the Final Smash be the people hit into an arena and getting cracked by the Dragonator, or maybe sent to an area to get attacked by some big beast like Rathalos, Zinogre, or some Elder Dragon.

The next character I would say should capitalize on the Zelda hype next year, it's the 35th anniversary, so alongside what I hope will be Breath of the Wild 2 and maybe another Zelda release early to mid year, I think we could always use another Zelda character.  I'm personally supporting Urbosa, she's been a favorite of mine since BOTW came out and think she could have a pretty fun moveset even as just another sword character, but also having a lightning magic moveset.  Her Final Smash would be the Divine Beasts joining together for the big blast towards the end of BOTW.  If not, then Midna if we want to pick out another standout character of the series, and who truly makes Twilight Princess great.  I think she could be a real fun character with a more unique moveset and they can adapt ideas we saw in Hyrule Warriors in terms of a moveset.  Her Final Smash would be her turning to her true form, transporting someone to the twilight realm, and getting hit with a big magic attack.

And as Pzeke brought up in the Game Awards thread, I think the final spot of this pack, whether it is the last one or not, should be Crash Bandicoot.  Smash is very much about representing gaming history, and I feel like a mascot character like Crash, even if he's not one anymore under the Activision banner, would be awesome.  Goofy moveset, I can imagine him using his jetpack for his boost jump, maybe one of his alternates could be classic polygon Crash.  Like Crash isn't the biggest deal anymore, but I have some definite nostalgia for him, he was the original game I played on PS1 as a kid at a little card shop in my small town, and while he isn't Banjo-Kazooie level of hype, I would love to see him return, especially after his big revival with the remake collection and the brand new game, which I need to pick up some day.

Other possibilities that I think would be fun, would be Geno, which would count as both Nintendo/Square Enix representation, Robotnik from Sonic, because he's another iconic classic villain and Sega could definitely use more rep here, and being a Nintendo property and was one of the games that made the first year of the Switch so good, I would love to see Rex with Pyra/Mythra from Xenoblade 2 show up.  I think something cool would be that Pyra/Mythra would act like Pokemon Trainer in the background, tethered to Rex, only interacting in special moves or the final Smash.

So what do you folks want to see?

Give me Rayman or Crash and I'll be happy. That said I already got my dream character as part of pass 1 (Banjo Kazooie) so I wouldn't be upset if we didn't get the limbless lad or bandicoot boy included.

Those two fit the game more than Steve or even Sephiroth, so I'm still quite surprised that they haven't been included yet. Of the two I think Crash should've been part of the roster by now.

It's cool to see Sephiroth either way - that's now another amiibo to add to the list.

Sigh, thought I was done with amiibo. Sephiroth is right up my alley though for my collection and Ill definitely get him.

So far I haven't been inclined to buy Fighters Pass 2 and it looks like it will continue to be that way.

Sephiroth has been the only one to interest me so far, though Min Min is a fun choice, but I probably won't buy the whole pack unless all three of the last ones nail something I like.

I heard a weird thunder the other day and I found out it was the raucous applause of millions of weebs clapping in their parent's basements over the announcement of Sephiroth for Smash.  :P

Now I totally get his inclusion and in fact figured they would have included him sooner. I was honestly expecting something from Squeenix or another Fire Emblem character, at the outlier maybe a Monster Hunter character. Whoever it was going to be, I was bracing for disappointment.

As for the final three roster spots, I'd like to see Bomberman upgraded to full character and not just a cameo. Shantae and Shovel Knight would round out my trio. As for Crash, I'm not opposed to his inclusion but he's basically under the rule of Activision and I'd hate to see them get any kind of compensation/royalty from his inclusion (maybe if Kotick were ousted I'd be more open to his inclusion).

Robotnik/Eggman, Tron Bonne w/Servbots and Linkle from Hyrule Warriors would all make great additions. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more Namco love but I can't think of any characters they could add.

Linkle is actually one of my top character picks I'd love to see happen, I just rarely bring her up, because she's not an official character, being made for the Hyrule Warriors game, so I think she'll be absolutely overlooked by numerous other characters from the Zelda series that are more popular in general such as Urbosa, Midna, Skull Kid, any other BOTW champion, and some villains from the mainline games.

I absolutely cannot stand FF7 and only own the games because my SO's like them. But me personally, I can't stand the game or it's characters and I see Sephiroth as an utterly wasted slot especially if it's with the intentions of having a FF character. Could've done far better. As for villains,

Majora's masked deku kid
Shadow
Metal Sonic
Eggman
Mr. L
Bald Bull
King Hippo
Darkrai
Gengar
Sagat
Dracula
Bass
Sho Minamoto

All viable options. Would've been better than swordy mc shirtless. I won't ramble off any more than this

[...] I wouldn't mind seeing a little more Namco love but I can't think of any characters they could add.

How about some more of their classic characters like Valkyrie, Wagan, or even Mappy? There's also Wonder Momo, or Hiromi from Burning Force. Heck, KOS-MOS has already appeared in other games outside of Xenosaga. Perhaps someone from the Tales of series, which incidentally if Namco had been the one to come up with the Super Smash concept, Tales of would pretty much equate to Fire Emblem. They could also share a Soulcalibur or Tekken fighter since there's plenty to choose from. I obviously can't leave Namco's second mascot Klonoa out of this list. And there's also Reiko Nagase for the shits and giggles.

My point is they're like Nintendo, so they have a bunch of characters to choose from. If I'm being honest, I'm amazed that the roster isn't flooded with more Namco representation seeing as they're developing the game.

Even if you aren't a FF7 fan, it makes a whole ton of sense to have Sephiroth.  We need more villains, more Final Fantasy representation is good, Cloud is there, so we got our hero and villain pair.  Comparing him to that list, Sephiroth is absolutely more standout than pretty much any character on the list, with the one exception being Eggman I feel.  He's not nearly as popular as Sephiroth, but he's very recognizable and been in countless forms of Sonic media for decades, and Sonic could definitely use more rep in the game after all these years.

It's interesting how they have chosen sepiroth over Sora, not to mention a character from ones again FF VII.

Seems like Disney really didnt want Sora in smash.

Don't get me wrong sepiroth is a cool character, but it wasnt even a top 50 char pick. sora was a top 5 pick and sakurai even said he wanted sora in smash last year.

Sephiroth has been screwing up with the video gaming multiverse since Kingdom Hearts, and not satisfied with what he did in FFVIIR, he decided to jump into Smash just to make Cloud's life a living hell once again. That's commitment right there.

My point is they're like Nintendo, so they have a bunch of characters to choose from. If I'm being honest, I'm amazed that the roster isn't flooded with more Namco representation seeing as they're developing the game.

One detail I left out in that original post is that at the time my brain was trying to come up with a female character Namco could put in. When I was writing in the names of Eggman and Tron Bonne, my brain was like "any female Namco characters they could add?" and the noggin locked up on me. It wouldn't have to be a female character but that's where my brain was at the time.  :P

To expand on that, I did think of characters like Dig Dug right away and even Wonder Momo but then I was thinking back to when Terry got introduced and the Smash forums were ablaze with people going "WHO?!" even though his opponents in the game have existed 15-20 years longer than he has...  ::)

Additionally, that's an excellent list of characters and would LOVE for Klonoa to be added (totally forgot about him and I feel ashamed as a result). For some reason I would think KOS-MOS being added would cause friction with Squeenix and the rest of the those mentioned probably wouldn't get past Nintendo because $$$. It ought not be that way but it probably is why characters like Shantae and Shovel Knight aren't already in (the latter having significant amiibo support already).

IF there was any additional Namco love to be had...Klonoa would be my pick but I wouldn't be upset with Dig Dug's inclusion. I figure Stahn Aileron from Tales of Destiny or the protagonist from Symphonia could be considered.  I tried to think up someone from SoulCalibur or Tekken, preferably female, but outside of Mitsurugi and Kazuya, no one really stood out. Since people are all about Sephiroth being in and there being a need for villains, Kazuya would probably fit that bill perfectly.

Lastly, just saw that a Ghosts 'n Goblins remaster is coming next year and I think Arthur would be a great addition to the game.  :)

Master Chief
Ryo Hazuki
Garalt

Probably only one of those might actually make it at some point, but hey, I can dream :p

Master Chief would probably be the only realistic inclusion if any of those.

I'd actually love Tron Bonne to show up.  I know she's not the biggest deal anymore with Mega Man Legends being a long dead series, but she's such a fun character and I think she'd be a pretty cool character to have and she already has a fighting game moveset due to Marvel vs Capcom.

If ownership is what you're inferring, Square-Enix has no control over KOS-MOS given the character is entirely a Namco IP—Xenogears and Xenosaga are unrelated, other than sharing "xeno" in their name. Monolith was originally created with the intention to expand on Xenogears, but as we all know that never came to be and Xenosaga ended up materializing, with Xenoblade taking over the reins after the latter's third episode. They're still both considered spiritual successors to Xenogears, Xenoblade more so in more ways than one.

As far as characters go, I think Dig Dug, Klonoa, or Valkyrie would fit the roster rather well, so I'd be happy with the inclusion of either of the three. Regarding Soulcalibur and Tekken, Yoshimitsu could represent both series and actually seems like he'd fit rather nicely, too; but if you'd rather have a quirky character, then Mokujin from Tekken seems about right.

Villain-wise, Sigma has always been my choice, but admittedly is a very biased one. I think Dr. Wily and Dr. Eggman would make a nice addition, but probably just one or the other seeing as they might end up using some type of machinery to battle, although the game already has characters that play similarly, so that might not matter at all. Lastly, a bad guy from Street Fighter wouldn't hurt, which most probably would end up being M. Bison/Vega. And also, Waluigi.

And yes, Arthur would be a nice addition to the roster; he's as classic a character as any.

I'd love to see either Ryu Hayabusa, DOOM Slayer, Dante, a Resident Evil character. Honestly I'm open to anyone at this point, I never expected Sephiroth and now that he's in seeing someone of his magnitude added would be cool.

Overall I really hope that the last 3 DLC characters are third party and not like Byleth or Min Min.

Calling it now, Waluigi is the last DLC.

And my #1, bring in Funky Kong.

That would be alot of fun, but unfortunately I don't know how likely the super violent game characters are likely.  Bayonetta is the only M rated game character I think, but hers is more for the general violence and sexiness she displays, with language too I believe.  I had previously wanted to see Sub Zero show up as Mortal Kombat is a big franchise in gaming history, especially fighting games, but I don't see it happening with the current game banned in Japan.  Rick is at least Japanese gaming history, and is (Was?) a Namco property, so that's some from representation there.

When it comes to first-party characters, Waluigi is actually the one many want in the most, so I'm sure things would get crazy if he were to be included in the game.

I’m like most of the internet and would love to see Geno or Mallow in there

Geno and Mallow pretty much fall under what Flashback2012 said earlier regarding Square-Enix, so other than the Mii costume for Geno, I don't see them joining the roster anytime soon. Although, as I've stated elsewhere, I don't mind being proven wrong.

I think if Bayonetta made it in, Rick has a chance to get in as well, all there needs to be done is tone the guy down a notch. The reason Mai wasn't included as part of Terry's stage was because, according to Sakurai, "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is for good boys and girls of many different ages...", or in other words, you know, because she's Mai. In all honesty, the same could've been said about Bayonetta before she joined, especially considering the over-sexualization of her character has been mainly driven by the fanbase, which is the same for Mai...and Samus. And all those Fire Emblem "waifus". And Palutena. And Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina. And you get my point.

Sora isn't in Smash because of Disney...Disney Japan has pretty much been the reason for the character not being in the game.

But as marty said, I too can't find anything online where Sakurai outright states he wants Sora in the game. What I've read is that supposedly Nomura was approached about it and he then offered Cloud. Not sure about the validity of that statement.

EDIT: Might as well rectify this post by adding that, after further reading, Disney seems to be "onboard" for the most part, especially considering the fact many are clamoring for the inclusion of the character. Disney owns Sora after all.

From what I remember Cloud was chosen due to Final Fantasy characters ranking high on the ballot with Cloud supposedly receiving the most support. I’d like to imagine that Sora along with Hero were seen as the most logical inclusions in the hypothetical sense that Square-Enix got a second Smash rep and as we’ve seen Hero was the easier character to include. Although the impact Dragon Quest has had on RPGs and Nintendo reviving timed exclusivity on Dragon Quest XI may have influenced Nintendo/Sakurai’s decision.

Banjo Kazooie were held back for years due to being owned by Microsoft but the two parties were eventually able to come to an agreement. I’d like to imagine Nintendo has discussed the idea of Sora in Smash with Disney but were unable to come to a deal similar to no X-Men or FF characters being allowed to appear in MvC Infinite

Sure, I know about the polls, but you know how these rumors are with this game, although it's not hard to imagine that a conversation between the two could've taken place at some time prior, they did end up being featured in a creator interview a few years back, so there's that. Overall, it goes without saying that all parties involved are well aware people want the character in the game, so it's all a matter of time, I guess, especially considering that both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest as a franchise have been running longer than Kingdom Hearts, so it made sense for characters from those two series to join the roster first.

I think it's clear Nintendo is doing a nice job keeping any and all information behind closed doors, the recent Sephiroth reveal being a great example of that, so we don't know if the deal for "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Kingdom Hearts" has been made already and they're just waiting for the perfect opportunity to make the announcement.

Sakurai killing all Super Mario RPG's fans hopes and dreams by bringing back the Geno Mii Fighter costume instead of giving a playable Geno lol Also they added a Tifa, Barret, Aerith, and Chocobo Hat outfits.

It's great to see they are definitely adding a proper amount of new music for Sephiroth, only having 2 songs from Cloud before, but they are adding 9 songs now with 4 new arrangements.

And a December 22nd release date for him.  His classic mode is a boss rush and they added a limited time boss mode, but its so limited that it is only for people who have the fighter pack 2 right now and only lasts till the 22nd.  Nintendo doing this limited shit is obnoxious, so hopefully its added back in a regular mode.  You do get to unlock Sephiroth and the new stage early if you beat this limited time mode before the 22nd on the hardest difficulty.

*EDIT* Oh, nevermind, Sephiroth is basically considered released yesterday, because if you beat the game on Easy, you just get Sephiroth lol Even on Very Hard, it doesn't look like much of a fight.  I feel like Sakurai woefully underestimated people lol

there where tons of complaints of to hard AI in the beginning month so this was the correct choice.

Lvl 9 cpu's and hard challenges in general have been made easier by quite a bit. They had some insane plays in the beginning before it got patched.

People where mainly complaining about ai because to unlock characters there where ai fights that had a randomizer from easy fights to ultra hard. and on highest diffiulty those fights would even beat pretty nice players. wich where usually very easy in former smash games

Shame though especially the lvl 9 cpu nerf.

Also keep in mind we even received an update to have tutorials in how to beat say the pauline challenge in world of light

It was to hard before hand The community has spoken. Definitely not underestimated.

Another Direct tomorrow and being that Smash Bros was the only game confirmed to be talked about, good chance we'll get another character reveal tomorrow.  My previous post that started this thread has not changed for me and only seems more likely at this point.  Monster Hunter Rise is out next month, so they should have a Hunter in Smash.  Have it release at the end of the month or early next month to go with the release of Rise, it's perfect and I think makes too much sense.

Something Zelda related was my second choice because of the anniversary, so Urbosa is my top pick, followed by Midna, though a swerve that could be kinda cool, would be Impa from Hyrule Warriors.  Like it makes no sense to choose a non-canon spinoff version of Impa, and I like young Impa in Age of Calamity, but Impa in the first game had such a cool design and a fun playstyle.  Or maybe something official, but very random like Twinrova from Ocarina would be fun and would give us another villain alongside Ganondorf, even if she's not a main one there.

They have yet to announce a character addition that I've cared about. I assume that tradition will continue. Who could they announce that I'd give a damn about though? Only two come to mind and it's plausible given the 12 year exclusivity of the game on Nintendo systems...

Chris Redfield - Resident Evil Remake
Jill Valentine - Resident Evil Remake

Likelihood is nill.

If Midna gets in, I would want it to be Twili Midna (since regular Midna is already a spirit in the game)

Sol would be awesome to have as another fighting game representation, plus the music...The best music added to Smash with him.

I know it would be edited out, but I so would love for Sol to get revealed and then as the gameplay kicks in, we hear..."THAT IS BULLSHIT! BLAZING!" lol

Pyra and Mythra in Smash, I didn't expect that, I thought if they were gonna do Xenoblade Chronicles 2, that they would have it be Rex with Pyra and Mythra done like Pokemon Trainer, but I guess not.  I'm all for this, I'm a big fan of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so getting them in is cool.

Pyra/Mythra aren't what I expected, but I'm not disappointed. Glad that Xenoblade has some more representation too!

Well, shit happened lol

I don't care about more anime looking characters but is okay, at least fans from the game will love it.
I am sure someone is making a hentai fanart of the subject right now...

I usually shy away from this term, but Urbosa is totally may video game bae.  She's such a radical departure from pretty much every other female character in Zelda and easily my favorite of the champions.

And with the final Smash reveal tomorrow, what we think its gonna be?  I know the internet hype is all over Sora from Kingdom Hearts right now, which I don't think is likely myself.  Not impossible, but think that one has some extra hurdles being involved with Disney and not just Square.  Personally, I think at this point, I want to see something Sony related to round out Smash Bros as being one of the best "game that celebrates gaming".  With that, I would say Crash Bandicoot, even if he's not a mascot anymore for Sony, his history is good enough for that and would be great to have Mario, Sonic, and Crash all in one game.  I guess a more likely inclusion in regards to a modern character would be like Aloy, who's been in other games already, maybe Kratos...Ratchet & Clank?  Ratchet & Clank would probably be a fun one for their different weapons and such they could use.  I'm really not sure if we see a Sony rep happening, I could see Sony not wanting to do that with the idea of maybe them attempting Playstation All-Stars again, but who knows.

All I know is that tomorrow, a lot of irrational people will be very upset, which is incredibly dumb, but inevitable due to people overhyping themselves.

I honestly have no Idea who I would even want to see. Only guess is that it is going to be a Nintendo character.

I do have a part of me wanting it to be an "another anime sword fighter" just to see the Salt that would create.

I can't deny a tiny part of me would be amused at that, but done this way...Oh, Sakurai is gonna add an anime character, a first for the series! But it's not Goku, it's Saber from Fate lol

Well, Sora it is.  Not terribly exciting to me, but a good "big, bold" choice in terms of hype and fan engagement.

I'm not a fan of Super Smash Bros., but I do stay up-to-date with the series. I really enjoyed the throwback to the Inkling's announcement trailer.

Yeah Sora isn't a big deal for me either, though I generally like the Kingdom Hearts series, but I know he was a big favorite people wanted to see, so that works out to be a nice end for the game as the final character.

I actually thought Sora wasn't gonna happen, specifically because of the Disney connection it had, that it would make it harder to deal with, but I never thought they'd just remove all of that stuff from the character entirely, which makes a lot of sense, even if does sorta feel like a part of the character is missing something, but they did it well enough to make it work and he does animate really well, can tell they went all out as the last character.  Real crazy to see just how many characters are in the game now with 89 in total lol

Kinda happy Smash Ultimate ended.

Both Fighter Pass were 4/10 for me, I liked a bunch of characters but most ones are stuff I will survive if I don't buy it.

Still, let's hope people that wanted it enjoy it.
But sincerely... I am more excited for Garfield in the Nickelodeon Smash clone.

I have your same exact sentiments. Terry and Banjo Kazooie were cool, but every other fighter were dumb to me. I could've skipped the entire 2nd DLC and saved some money but it is what it is. I should have known they'd never top King K. Rool, Simon and Richter Belmont with mere DLC. I don't even play Smash Bros. anymore.

...

Garfield in Nickelodeon? That would be amazing actually.

Nickelodeon's parent company actually owns Garfield now so it makes sense.
