Off Topic / Thank you - 6 Years Since Joining
« on: April 03, 2019, 09:39:21 am »
Hi, I don't normally ever post here, but I use this site to catalogue my games and I just wanted to say thank you for staying up all these years.
I added the first item to my profile on 7/04/2013 and that day is fast approaching. It'll mark the 6th year I've been here! That game is Alfred Chicken - PS1 [EU] for anyone curious.
I've edited apparently more than 500+ items according to the badge I have. There's a good chance if you edit any PAL game made in 1995+ my name is in the history tab. 99% chance if it's an Australian region game.
I just wanted to thank whoever is hosting this site and the community, especially the guys who have been making edits alongside me all these years.

Site Feedback / Database Inconsistencies
« on: November 24, 2015, 07:46:39 am »
As a big user of the site since early 2013, more and more inconsistencies with how the database is managed had began to occur to me. The most glaring being the following.

Say a user decided to add a game to his collection. However, this game consisted of both the game itself, and a separate soundtrack. How would one add it?
So far the approved way of doing this is to add them separately, one for the game and the other for the soundtrack. Users optionally later choosing to add notes signifying their relationship or using the description field and entering in duplicate descriptions of the item.
While this works, establishing the relationship between items here is cumbersome and efficient. A more efficient way to handle this would be as follows:
Allow users to create a parent item, that can contain multiple items. For example, Sword Game Limited Edition may come with Sword Game and Sword Game OST. So to create this, users can create the parent Sword Game Limited Edition and then link the two items (that being the game and soundtrack) to the parent, along with pictures of the bundled box attached to each item.
Alternatively if Sword Game Limited Edition was contained all in one case, users could make Sword Game the parent under the name Sword Game Limited Edition and then add the Sword Game OST to it.
This can work with consoles to, allowing the controllers to be included with consoles and even bundles that include games.
Once added, these parent items add the subitems to their respected categories, but when either item is highlighted, it could indicate that it is connected to a parent item.
Sub-items will still be available to add independently as they are now, but this method will help keep track of what bundles came with what certain items.
I know implementing this would be tough, and there's literally a backlog of updates that need to be done. But I feel like this may be one of the final steps to make this a more effective database.
This may have to be restricted to physical games only as digital games selling bundles is hard to keep track of.

Another inconsistency I notice is how the options for Cart/Disk, Case/Box, Manual, Other are applied to literally every item. These should be modified per item category, and the item creation should provide the option to delete or add checkboxes if necessary. Say if a game didn't come with a manual.
The same applies to the photos required for each item. A way to maximize pictures would be good to, as I remember reading that copies of the pictures are saved somewhere in their original size.

The last thing bugging me is that the items counter for our account counts everything from games to consoles. Perhaps another counter for just games only would make things a bit more clearer? I feel this isn't as urgent as the other two.

Thanks for reading. I haven't had to maintain a large scale database before so there may be some still be some inconsistencies with my ideas. Feel free to share your thoughts.

So recently I acquired a promotional copy of the Sega GT 2002 / Jet Set Radio Future bundle for PAL consoles. I was shocked to find one at first as I thought the bundle was only available to the NTSC market. However upon investigating the roots of this promotional copy I haven't been able to find anything on it. Was it supplied only to selected stores for demoing? Was it placed on the shelves for everyone to purchase? Is this copy a fake that someone put alot of time into? Personally I have no clue. So I'm asking if anyone here knows anything about the origins of this promo copy.
Picture below, cheers.

Site Feedback / Missing category, Nintendo eShop (Wii U) [AU]
« on: April 25, 2015, 10:37:56 am »
Just bought a virtual console game on the eShop and I realized there wasn't a Wii U eShop category for the AU region.
Thought I'd suggest adding it in, not sure how many Australian Wii U eShop users there are here but there's definitely one now.

Also, I noticed for the Wii that virtual console games and WiiWare games are made separate, but for Wii U they're all bundled under the title of Nintendo eShop. Was this on purpose or an oversight? I don't think it really matters either way though.

Cheers

Video Game Database Discussion / Mass delete my Steam items?
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:02:08 pm »
My Steam/PCdigitalNA categories are really overshadowing my entire collection so I've decided to delete them from my account. However this is easier said then done as my Steam category contains over 437 items. While I've already deleted my PCdigitalNA games due to it only being around 100 or so items my Steam list would take at least an hour to remove.
So my question is can an admin mass remove my entire Steam section off my profile with just a few clicks? Cheers

Classic Video Games / PS1 PAL games - Are they made for separate regions?
« on: November 12, 2014, 05:11:44 am »
Hey guys, so recently I've been digging through eBay to find certain PS1 titles and I found that alot come from France and Germany. A quick glance at the cover art and it looks the same as an Australian or British copy as it has the same classifications and separate language descriptions on the back cover as alot of old PS1 games had.
So my question is, is it still the same game as the normal British/European version? Granted it has language selections to German and French.
Here's the auction I'm referring to: http://goo.gl/Xwakkz

Video Game Database Discussion / Steam Music Soundtracks Question
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:03:29 am »
Now that Steam has launched its own official music player, soundtracks have their own official category in the Steam library.
However because they fall under downloadable content I was wondering: Do we add the soundtracks bought off Steam to Swag - Soundtracks or PC - Steam?

Site Feedback / Add Humble Bundle Category Under PC / New Edit System
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:36:31 am »
Every single game in my PC - Digital [NA] category comes from my DRM free library on the Humble Bundle. I'm not sure what other websites give out DRM free games but Humble Bundle seem to be one of the largest of the market.
I would be 100% willing to edit all my games in PC - Digital [NA] into the new category  as well as give new front covers based on the icon displayed in the Humble Bundle library.
Again, I understand how having that many edits would be an inconvenience to moderators which is why once again I insist on creating a new system were trusted users can approve edits. This idea has been discussed in other threads and is still open to debate.

Hardware and Tech / What part of a DS is this?
« on: February 15, 2014, 08:42:03 am »
So I was digging through some boxes when I found I had this odd looking cartridge type thing.

At first glance I thought it was some sort of accessory for the DS. There's a imprint on the side saying Nintendo DS Lite so I was right about that, but soon I realized that this thing wasn't listed under any DS Lite accessory to ever exist. So what is it? A piece of a DS Lite that has been removed? A third party accessory?
I was stumped, so that's when I decided it would be smart to ask you guys.

Site Feedback / Add Australian Ratings (OFLC)
« on: February 10, 2014, 04:07:17 am »
I have been adding alot of Australian games recently and noticed that the usual Australian ratings are not present in the list. I was wondering if we could include these.
What you would basically want to add is:
  • G
  • PG
  • M
  • MA 15+
  • R 18+

You can find them all here: http://www.classification.gov.au/Guidelines/Pages/G.aspx There is also a X 18+ rating but I know for a fact that no games are labelled under this.
You might want to put (OFLC) next to each rating to so people know they fall under the Australian rating system.
Also I know it's offtopic but when can we expect the ability to edit Developers and Publishers again? Seems like months since we could, I understand if you're still working hard on it though, just an update would be nice  ;D

Site Feedback / Option to enlarge Boxart?
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:40:38 am »
Hey guys, I've noticed that after we include games to the database they instantly get shrunk down to fit inside one of the 3 boxes (front, back and cd/cartridge). What I was thinking is maybe we should keep the original dimensions of the image and allow users to view them in there original size once they click on them. You would of course still keep the thumbnails in the 3 squares, but the option to enlarge the pictures would allow people to use this site as a reference for finding boxarts for hard to find games.

Of course with that being said it would take up alot of space on the servers for all the pictures, and it's a bit late to implement a feature like this now seeing how many category's are already done. Just a thought  8)

Site Feedback / Accessory/Hardware Change
« on: May 06, 2013, 09:19:20 pm »
Hey, I think we should have a different ownership check-box to replace "Cart/Disk" if the games are in a Accessory or Hardware tab
What we have now are:
  • Cart/Disk
  • Case/Box
  • Manual
  • Other Inserts

I suggest changing them to somthing like:
  • Item
  • Case/Box
  • Manual
  • Other Inserts
  • Cables/Cords (?)
Cheers
