Off Topic / FF7 Rebirth Soundtrack
« on: April 21, 2024, 08:15:10 am »
A bit frustraited at the FF7 Rebirth soundtrack. Love the music, but not willing to pay $70 for an absured collection of 175 songs across 7-8 discs. There's like... a dozen songs in the game I really liked. Went to Amazon to piece meal it at a buck each, and they don't even allow you to listen to the tracks without purchase... let alone purchase individual songs. So that sucks. Cheapest I can go is $45 for the entire digital group of 175 songs... but I'm still wasting about $30 on the 160 songs I wouldn't bother listening too more than once.

Very annoying.

Modern Video Games / Baulder's Gate 3 Physicial Release Confirmed
« on: November 16, 2023, 01:19:56 pm »

It's a beautiful edition, but man... not what I expected. I mean... I kind of expected a collector's edition, but I also expected a regular vanilla edition. There doesn't appear to be a vanilla edition. It comes with a lot and it's only $10 more... sitting at $80 to preorder. I suppose that's fair given most new games are now $70.

Without burying the lead, here's the link to preorder direct from their site:

https://box.baldursgate3.game/

I honestly don't know if other retailers will be getting copies to sell. As of this time, I don't see it listed on Gamestop. If you buy the game on PS5 it'll come on 2 discs. If you buy it on Xbox, it'll come on 3 discs. If you buy it on PC, you'll get 1 disc and a download code.

I've personally been holding off to get a phycisal edition. Not sure I'll pick it up at that price. What about you? Are you interested in buying it?

General / Black Friday 2023
« on: November 15, 2023, 01:58:05 pm »
Black Friday ads are finally starting to release. Walmart's just released today and happy to say the Sonic game I was going to get for my son is on there for 33% off. That's fair considering the game just released. Their ad also has me scratching my head as three of the games I had some interest in after a price drop have made it in their ad:

- Hogwarts Legacy (PS5) $40
- Star Wars Jedi Survivor (PS5) $35
- God of War Ragnarok (PS5) $40

I enjoyed the first games of the other two, but I'm leaning towards Hogwarts as it's something different. Thoughts?

General / Playstation Showcase - Summer Game Fest
« on: May 14, 2023, 10:56:22 am »
Updated this thread to include the Playstation showcase set for Wed the 24th. I expect much to be shown. Rumors are already swirling. Now the question is... what do they have up their sleeves? Mortal Kombat 1 was already announced, so that's not going to be a surprise there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summer Game Gest is coming upon us and seems to have officially replaced E3. Gone are the days of live shows that fans could attend and try their hands at new software and upcoming hardware. Gone are the days of free gaming swag, the geeking out among peers, and the booth babes. Now... we have only digital events that feel cold and hollow but at least we can still get some interesting announcements... assuming the industry pulls out of a nose dive.

You can check out the schedule on their site but I'll post the main times below the link:

https://www.summergamefest.com/

June 8th -
3pm ET - Main showcase
5pm ET - Indie Dev showcase

June 11th -
1pm ET - Xbox showcase / Starfield Direct after

June 12th -
1pm ET - Ubisoft showcase

I assume more times will be added as we get closer given all the publishers/developers that will be attending:

Seeing some pretty big possibilities that could come to this show, but honestly, my expectations are still really low given the last few years of what the industry has had to offer. What's possible though? What would be my dream announcements that would shoot a spark of excitement up my spine?

 - Uncharted continuation (Playstation will be present)
 - Tomb Raider (Amazon will be present)
 - Indiana Jones (Microsoft will be present)
 - Mass Effect 5 (EA will be present)
 - Shenmue 4 (Sega will be present)
 - Dino Crisis reboot (Capcom will be present)

Now... do I expect any of the above to be shown? It's surely possible, but no. I have zero expectations for this show. And to point out the big name not present, at least for now, I didn't see Nintendo's logo. I expect they'll have their own direct separate from this and the one thing I really want from them at this point... Zelda Twilight Princess HD on Switch. That's truly the only I would care to see from them.

So what are your expectations and hopes? Anything that you're hoping finally gets announced or that you'll see an update on?

General / Online Gaming Sites You Trust?
« on: May 01, 2023, 08:37:47 am »
Hi all.

I regretted selling my Sega CD model 2 system back in the day (around 2012?) and want to get one again. While I would love to get a Sega CDX, I think the model 2 Genesis with the model 2 Sega CD is probably one of the slickest system designs (visually) of all time.

I've started the process of looking around price wise. My local shops don't have a Sega CD 2 and I've checked www.estarland.com and they don't have any either. Half or more of the Sega CD 2's on eBay are broken and state as such but for some reason, they still ask the amount of a working one. So a couple questions for the community here:

1. What online sites other than eBay would you trust to purchase retro games/systems from?
2. What sites/businesses do you trust to fix your broken systems?

Thanks for the replies.

General / Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Retro Collection Announced
« on: April 26, 2023, 10:09:12 pm »
Ok, I'm tentatively excited about this. I'm a huge Jurassic Park fan and have been hoping for a collection like the TMNT Cowabunga Collection we got last year. There seem to be a couple catches on this though. First, it's Limited Run Games. Second, they only mention the Nintendo games.

For me to buy this, they'll need to at least add all the Sega games. The collection is said to be releasing this year. The full list nor the platforms are announced as of yet.

Here's my wish list for this collection:
 - Jurassic Park (Genesis)
 - JP Rampage Edition (Genesis)
 - JP (Game Gear)
 - JP (Sega CD)
 - JP (SNES)
 - JP (NES)
 - JP (Game Boy)
 - JP 2 (SNES)
 - JP 2 (Game Boy)
 - JP (3DO)
 - Lost World (Genesis)
 - LW (Game Gear)
 - LW (PS1/Saturn)
 - LW (Game Boy)
 - Warpath JP (PS1)

As it stands, they only pictured the first game's Nintendo releases. On top of that, I don't expect any of the Lost World games as the 30th Anniversary for those would be 2027. Time will tell.

General / Selling/Trading Games -- 2023
« on: April 25, 2023, 08:35:57 am »
Probably since the early PS4 days, I decided to hold off on trading/selling any games, figuring that I'd at some point, return to a completed game for another go around. Plus, prices were worse than driving a new car off the lot. You'd be lucky to recoup 50% of your purchase as soon as you opened the game.

I took a look at my PS5 collection and decided that I'm going to trade in Horizon FW to put towards the new Zelda. The $15-$20 isn't needed. I'm not hurting financially. I just find that I've lost interest in the game due to it being so bloated with content that doesn't interest me. The main story was ok, but just wasn't pulling me in. On top of that, I don't have the time to play through every 30-100 hour game anymore. There was a time, where I would push through a game to complete the story. I did that with the first Watch Dogs, AC Origins and others. Then, with my current shift in how I spend my free time (decided to try my hand at writing a novel), I know I won't be revisiting Forbidden West.

I know many here are hardcore collector's. After all, this is VG Collect. Have you hit a point anytime this year where you've decided to downsize?

General / Your Largest Purchase Pause?
« on: April 22, 2023, 09:11:02 am »
I took a step back this morning and decided to figure out what the last game I bought was, and as it turns out, it was MK11 Ultimate for PS5 -- as seen in my signature below. I purchased that in late December and started playing it in January. Not a game per se, but my last gaming purchase was the mClassic, also in January. My next gaming purchase is going to be the new Zelda releasing late next month, so there will be a five month gap between any purchases of actual games.

While five months is almost nothing in the spectrum of a life, it's nearly half a year. I usually will be buying older titles but have just about caught up with what I'm wanting to collect. Then I've been replaying Witcher 3 and a bunch of older games.

My usual purchase habits are about a single game per month all the way up to 3-4 games (average) per month in my more intense collecting days with a few years going as high as more than 40 games in a single year. This year, it seems I'll be lucky to hit 4 purchases for the entire year. Seems so odd in contrast to where I used to be.

I've heard before that sometimes gamers need a break from gaming and maybe that's where I'm at. What about you though? Have you ever had a lull in purchases or did you decide you needed a break from collecting or simply buying games at some point?

General / Expanded Game Dev Time
« on: April 04, 2023, 08:44:06 am »
At some point during the last generation of gaming development time doubled going from 2 - 3 years, to 5+ years per game. What does that mean?

Well, it means less games for one. Remember how Naughty Dog used to put out three games per gen of the series they were making? Now they can't be fussed to bother making a new IP for the PS5?.. opting instead to just "remake" the first Last of Us game. Maybe they're a bad example as they used to be top tier... and now... well... aren't.

How about Resident Evil? How is Capcom doing? Their stock is apparently through the roof this year, making them probably the only ones with decent stock at the time of this writing. What have they released recently. Oh yeah, Resident Evil 2, 3, 4 remakes. Last gen they switched to first person for RE7. Then eventually made first person RE8 for PS5. Then Monster Hunter is still big.

Capcom at least is releasing games for their various series. How about Rockstar? They used to release 3+ games per year during the PS1 and PS2 gen. How many non-ports have they released since 2013?... now 10 years ago? Oh... one... RDR2. Everything else from them has been GTA V. Rockstar has become pathetic.

You might be asking where I'm going with this. Well, I think we're now at a point where games that have been announced, could be taking such incredibly long times to make that they will skip entire generations.

Here's what's been announced that I have excitement for:
 - Mass Effect 5
 - Instinction
 - Tomb Raider next gen
 - Witcher 1 Remake (yes, there are some remakes I enjoy)
 - Witcher 4

Notice how none of the above are Playstation exclusives? Generally by the time a new Playstation launched, there were at least four exclusives that I was hyped for coming down the pipe. PS5 had two that I was ok on and they've already released two years into the life of the hardware. These long dev times, I feel, are why Sony has shut up completely. They don't announce anything anymore. They don't want to announce something for their current hardware only to see those games skip said hardware. Imagine each game having The Last Guardian dev times.

That's where we're at. The above mentioned games? I fully expect that half of those won't even touch PS5 or X1X. PC players aren't much safer as they'll need to upgrade their video cards before these games release. That is the reason we're seeing more ports of classic games and remakes. Time to expect announcements to come fewer and more far between. Time to expect AAA games to be even fewer.

Have you noticed this as well?

Classic Video Games / The mClassic -- Pulled the Trigger
« on: January 21, 2023, 06:14:18 pm »
Last year, I decided to finally get myself an HDMI adapter for my PS2 Slim so that I could play my PS1 and PS2 games again after buying a TV that no longer had anything but HDMI inputs (my bad, I know). Even when I could still use component though, the picture looked horrible with text being unreadable. I ended up getting the Hyperkin HDMI adapter for the PS2 and it made it so I could at least see the games and play them... but the picture quality wasn't there. The text was still grainy and the picture was even a bit stretched (forgivable but annoying). At least I could play them.

Fast forward to today, I'm still wanting to play my PS1 and 2 games but I want a crisp clear picture. I did a ton of research and was hoping there was a version of the PS1Digital for PS2... but there isn't. Next best thing... the mClassic... without the need to physically mod the hardware.

The Hyperkin adapter never stated it upscaled so I can't really be mad at them, but it does pass through the 480i signal just fine. The mClassic is supposed to take that 480i signal and upscale it to 1080p. Here's hoping that works.

I'm not going to be able to supply good enough comparison photos but will be able to go over what works and what doesn't. I should get it on Tuesday..

As an added bonus, the mClassic will supposedly upscale my Switch from 1080p to 4K. I'll let you guys know if it actually does that as well. It would be nice given the new Zelda coming out.

Stay tuned.

General / Forgotten Game -- Need Help
« on: January 14, 2023, 05:43:17 pm »
Ok guys... need your help. Trying to figure out which game I played based on a memory as that's all I have.

I played it back in the mid to late 80's on either an Atari system or some other joystick capable system.

The game has you find your way out of a forest maze and most the screen is blacked out with the exception of a circular area in the center.

One creature you can come across is a bear and it will kill you if you get close enough. At least, I remember it being a bear.

Any ideas?  :-\

General / Mortal Kombat Appreciation Thread
« on: January 02, 2023, 09:27:14 am »
I picked up MK11 Ultimate and started changing all the character costumes to their classic looks that I like and it dawned on me that I've been playing this series for 30 years now.  :o Figured it would be fun to go through the years.

We all know that Mortal Kombat started as an arcade game and was later ported to basically everything. I will post a little blurb about each from personal experience and what I have owned and still own. Please post any MK games you've owned and what your favorites have been over the years as well. Heck, post your favorite character(s) too. Might end up being a fun conversation.

My first experience with the series was when a bud of mine rented the Sega Genesis version. There was all this hype in the news about how ultra violent the game was but after an hour or so of playing rounds with my friend, we were underwhelmed. Punches and kicks didn't seem like anything new but we also didn't understand the Finish Him screen. As with many things back then, we were hoping that it was button combo oriented and we were right. Eventually, I managed to get Sub-Zero's fatality to work and our jaws dropped as he ripped Scorpion's head off with the spine still attached. Shortly after, large grins appeared on our faces and we were set on finding the fatalities for each character.

Mortal Kombat was immediately on my Christmas list but as I didn't have a Genesis and only a Game Gear at the time, that's what I had asked for it on. I almost had it too. My mom had apparently bought the Game Gear version for me but heard the politics on the news about the violence and returned it in favor of Ecco the Dolphin. Still a great game but I'd have preferred MK. I eventually went on to own the Sega CD version once I was an adult, which was the worst due to the last boss transformations having to load from the disc which would literally pause the game for a moment.

Still Own -- Game Gear (Komplete), PS2

With the second game, a different friend of mine managed to get it on Genesis and it... was... glorious. Everything that made the first game incredible but amplified to near perfection. Each character now had multiple fatalities and friendships and even the ridiculous babalities that would turn your opponent into a crying baby. It was hilarious. They added quite a few characters as well that would become fan favorites like Kitana and Mileena. Even the once hidden Reptile became a main character and a favorite of mine.

I recall getting a GamePro magazine specifically because it had all of the finisher moves listed in it. My friend and I would test each move to get the gory details. It was fantastic. I have owned many versions of MKII but it was the 32X version that I felt was the best home console port due to being most like the arcade version. I even had it on Game Gear (pictured below) which didn't look too bad at all.

Owned Versions -- Game Gear, Genesis, 32X, PSP, PS3
Still Own -- Game Gear, Genesis

Now, my experience with the next couple MK games were limited as I didn't find them enjoyable. I wasn't one for juggling combos as was prevalent in the third and the first attempt at 3D in MK IV was a bit wonky.

It wasn't until Deadly Alliance on PS2 that I got back into the series and even then it was still more casual. Still they added in a favorite character of mine, Frost. Very happy to see her return in MK11. Still, I was poor during the PS2 days being in the midst of college so when I picked this one up, I had little time to get good at it. I believe this is where they started the Krypt with unlockable items but it may have been the next game. Sadly they started to take Reptile literally and changed him from a ninja to a literal reptilian lizard man. *sigh

The next installment, Deception, is where the series really shined for me in the 3D realm. Not only was it a solid fighting game, but they had added more characters. It was like MK2 back on Genesis, but for PS2. It had an enhanced storyline where you traveled the realms in a story mode that was fun. They even had a silly side game with MK Chess that was fun to play and a ton of unlockables i the Krypt. Deception gave MK2 a run for its money as my favorite in the series. Just a fantastic game all around.

More characters were added, with one becoming a favorite, Kira. I would eventually get her confused with Skarlett as they look similar depending on the outfit worn. Apparently in MK11 you can even make Skarlett look like Kira so that's a win. My only complaint with Deception is that Sub-Zero looked like Shredder from Ninja Turtles. What's up with that?

Still Own -- PS2 Collector's Edition

While I bought MK Armageddon on PS2, I never really got into it. The game didn't feel as fun but the roster was insane. I think it had every character imaginable with the exception of just a couple. Can't remember who they were. They also added in a Mario Kart type game that was stupid fun. Sadly, this one felt a bit stale to me.

Still Own -- N/A

That's when they decided to reboot with Mortal Kombat on PS3 and 360. They emphasized story more and went back to the stories of the original two games fleshing them out in an alternate timeline fashion. The best addition here were the x-ray moves that literally showed you bones shattering with specific hits. It was fantastic and a great new beginning for the series.

Owned Versions -- PS3
Still Own -- N/A

I had taken a break from fighting games for a long time but ended up getting MK X on PS4. It was fun and had a lot of the same great moves as the previous game, but still felt a bit flat. I didn't like any of the newly added characters but still shelled out $5 for both Alien and Predator. I thought they were fun and good additions for nostalgia. I learned my lesson here though to just wait for a Komplete version of a Mortal Kombat game as they charged so much for DLC characters anymore.

Owned Versions -- PS4
Still Own -- PS4

I'm glad I did hold off on buying MK11 with everything they've thrown into MK11 Ultimate. I believe I read somewhere that the cost for buying the game and all DLCs when they first became available was something around $140 without buying any extra koins. I got MK11 Ultimate on PS5 for $30 with all of it so pretty happy. I'm hoping to have another great revival to the series as I've heard really good things about this one. Time will tell though. And with MK12 apparently just around the corner, this will give me time to wait for a similar amount of time for a Komplete version of that should one become available.

So what are some of your favorite characters from the series? What were your favorite games listed above? Did you like the spin off games like Shaolin Monks (I enjoyed this one personally), or are you just not that into Mortal Kombat? Please add to the discussion.

General / Witcher 3 New Gen Release and General Chat Thread
« on: December 17, 2022, 10:43:28 am »

Witcher 3's new gen version released this last week. I would imagine many on here already have a version of the game as came out in what... 2015? That said, the 3rd was my first ever into the series as I play primarily on Playstation and I thought it was one of the best releases of last gen. When it was announced they were giving it a graphical face-lift I was excited.

For those new to Witcher 3, it's on every platform, including Switch. It only made sense to eventually come to the new gen. The upgrade is free to those who already own the game. Save file transfers were a bit convoluted for PS4 to PS5 but not difficult.

They have decent compression for the PS5's SSD. Base game is about 40GB. With both expansions, it came to about 50GB. I think it was a bit more than 70GB for the PS4 version with both expansions so spaced saved I guess.

I spent a bit of time making new box art for it as the PS4 disc is still required to play the PS5 version... which I'm fine with. I linked the pics below.

Are you planning to upgrade to the new version or replay in general? What are your thoughts on the game?

General / Most Rare -- VGC Edition
« on: November 04, 2022, 04:35:25 pm »
For whatever reason, I was clicking around and noticed that a few games in my collection had very few people here on VG Collect that also had it in their collection. That brought me to wonder what everyone else had that are active here on the forums. So...

Question: What are your top 10 least owned games that you have from the VG Collect community?

Here's mine:   Game Name - Platform - Number of People that have it in their collection on this site.
A Plague Tale: Requiem – PS5 – 3
Deliver Us the Moon – PS5 – 4
TMNT Shredder’s Revenge LRG – PS4 – 7
TMNT Cowabunga Collection – PS4 – 9
Horizon Forbidden West – PS5 – 16
Hunt: Showdown – PS4 – 11
The Lost World: JP – Game Gear – 25
Star Fighter – PS1 – 25
Double Dragon – Game Gear – 26
Stargate – Game Gear – 29

As expected, the least are physical PS5 games. The system is newer, still hard to buy and digital has taken over as majority version bought these days. Then my Game Gear collection took up most of the rest of the top 10.

How did your collection fare?

Oh, and no... I don't expect you to go through hundreds or thousands of games and check. Just guestimate. You probably have a good idea already.

Modern Video Games / Playstation State of Play Sept. 13th, 2022.
« on: September 12, 2022, 07:41:40 pm »
Figured I would post the news that a 20-ish minute State of Play will be held tomorrow at 6pm ET.

https://blog.playstation.com/2022/09/12/state-of-play-returns-tomorrow-september-13/

The full story:

With Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, it’s almost time to celebrate the amazing creative contributions of the Japanese game development community. And it’s also a perfect time to kick off another State of Play.

State of Play returns tomorrow, Tuesday, September 13, with a new live broadcast at 3:00pm Pacific Time / 6:00pm Eastern Time / 11:00pm BST. You can watch it live on Twitch and YouTube.

For tomorrow’s show, we’ll have some great updates from our amazing Japanese partners, along with a few other surprises from developers all around the world.

Expect about ~20 minutes of reveals, new updates and fresh gameplay footage for 10 games coming to PS5, PS4, and PS VR2.

------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I'm keeping my expectations low. The last three years of lackluster reveals have left me jaded to a fault. As per usual, I'll hope for a Dino Crisis reboot, Shenmue 4 or a continuation of Uncharted, but I high doubt that will happen.
