I've always been a Nintendo collector. That's what the majority of my collection is. I've noticed that my most wanted games these days are heading in the Sega direction. I know! Heresy, right? I'm looking a lot of Dreamcast and Genesis games that I don't have. I think my collecting is starting to shift towards Sega stuff.
Don't worry, Nintendo. You'll always be #1 in my heart. Daddy is just after a little strange.
Has your collecting ever shifted? Do you just look up and see you're headed in a new direction?
-
Oh for sure. When I started out it was mostly Nintendo as well. Mostly SNES. Then I realized that I really like PS2 and started going at it. Went from like 100 to like 500 pretty quick. Now I'm really close to a full set of N64 so that's my priority.
-
Definitely it changes gears often I would say, with certain things that never shift though. Sometimes I get really into hunting for a certain console, sometimes it's certain games.
-
It sure does. I usually stick to my favorite genres, but the consoles those genres are on will be all over the place.
-
It certainly does. I can think of these focuses
NES (early-mid 90s)
Genesis and Saturn (mid-late 90s)
PC (mid 90s-2000)
PS2 and PlayStation (2001-2008)
Saturn (2006-2010)
Daytona USA and After Burner (2010-2012)
Master System (2010-2011)
Genesis (2011-2013)
everything (2013-2016)
Genesis (2016)
PC and Genesis (2017)
I think those years make sense.

I'm still building my collection and grabbing those big consoles, games and franchises. It's been that way since I started seriously collection, which was about 4 or 5 years ago.
-
I'd say mine shifts all the time. Right now I'm really into my Wii U and those damn amiibos. But I never pass up a Dreamcast or Game Gear I'm missing.
-
I really am just a cheapskate. I go for most anything that's looks good and is $20-$30 or under.

Be careful. That's how I amassed a eff-ton of games.
-
Mine tend to shift based on what ever I'm playing at the time. I just resurrected my vita so I could play Ys VIII and I've already picked up like 6 new vita games in the last week.

Samesies.

I suffer from collecting mood swings lol. I used to be on a huge PS2 kick than got obsessed with Wii U, than I wanted every good Wii game, I was buying SNES for a little bit, I started collecting with only NES games when I first started collecting than expanded to other consoles. Now ive been only focusing on new releases for Xbox One and Switch and amiibos and not so much retro but I do want Mario Strikers for GC and have a craving for a ColecoVision for some reason :).
-
Prob on a monthly basis my main focus changes consoles. I've always been that way. Earlier this year it was Game Gear, then Wii U, then Saturn, then PS4, and now Wii.

Me too, though I don't have quite the shit-ton you do.

Pretty much depends what people decide to get rid of.
If It's a great deal I'm game if there is some interesting stuff that I need that is.
I will avoid atari like the plague though ;)
In the past I started collecting only nintendo: gamecube and gba to be exact. Later on I branched out to sony and sega since apparently some nintendo series or certain genre's were also on these consoles. And the Snes looked allot like the gba so yea It's only natural.
Only had nintendo stuff at home back than but my friends had sony and sega games. I was mainly a nintendo guy back than.
Ever since I retrieved old arcade games that I have played as a kid and games such as second samurai. I Forgot the titles but came across them by chance Great stuff ;D

Ive had "strange" from time to time. When I originally started, it was PS1 RPGs. As I acquired all the ones I was wanting, I branched out toward all RPGs and eventually NES (with the wife's interest in that one). I then turned to SMS and as that finished, I toned down and went straight PS4.

"Toned down" my ass. I've seen your game room. That's a whole lot of ps4 games to get

Absolutely I used to be a huge nintendo fanboy I hated sega but now I'm a big genesis/dreamcast fan but Nintendo will always be my #1

2008 -2009: Collected almost only North American Saturn and N64 games here and there.
2010 - 2014 : I collected pretty much everything and anything from the NES and newer, having somewhat more of a focus on N64, Dreamcast, SNES, and PS2. This was sort of my golden era of collecting as I used to hunt all the time and I often found tons of great stuff. 80% of my collection was built during this time.
2014-2016: My collecting definitely became a lot more focused since many of the games I'd been after for years were now in my collection. I started collecting a lot of PS1 and DS during this time, especially PS1. I also started making a push to complete my cartridge only games, mainly N64. I also began downsizing a little at this time, mostly for consoles I realized I wasn't that into. These include NES, Sega CD, some SNES, and some Genesis.
2017-present: Since the beginning of this year I have become somewhat of a non-collector; I still buy games and add them to my collection, but only ones that I know I'll play within a month or so. I almost buy no retro games anymore despite loving them still. I have downsized probably 20% of my overall collection since January, mostly the retro stuff and have began selling games that I play that I either do not like or do not like enough to justify holding onto them given what they are worth. I have also become way more of an actual gamer in that I love to play games way more than collect them which was the opposite up until this year. 95% of all games I buy now are modern games and I now do a lot of MAME and emulation now as well even if I actually own the game I'm emulating.
-
Not really since i've never had one console I liked to collect more than the other, I just buy whatever game I find interested. The console it is on really don't matter to me.
-
My problem is It's hard to turn off the buying.
I see cheap games in garage sales or online locally and can't help but to get them before someone else does.
I love the hunt.

That's no joke. I have a legit hard time leaving stuff laying. It's tough for me. I can't pass up a deal

what kind of deals are we talking about, shovel ware for dirt cheap or legitimate deals of good games for sometimes bargains
In the last kind I'm pretty sure almost all have a hard time leaving such deals.
I will say though if you collect all including shovelware you will need to pick these dirt cheap deals up since you won't find it cheaper especially when you would need to add shipping when buying them online but otherwise It's not like your missing anything.
Shovelware is not sports games only, there are far more shovelware non sport titles than one might think.

Oh, definitely. I'm not a completionist, so I only buy games that interest me on a console. Eventually I clear out what looks good, and switch machines until other stuff comes to my attention. The biggest changes come when I do something that branches fully away from my usual behavior- like when I bought my first $100+ game (Lunar 2 on the Sega CD, CIB.) Breaking that mental barrier opened up a lot of new options I'd previously never considered outside of a lucky find- I finally decided to get a Saturn, for example.
I'm thinking next year I'm gonna break another personal barrier, and give digital games a serious go. I hate not having a physical copy, so there's only a tiny handful of digital games on my systems. At this point though, it's become blatantly obvious that most of what interests me is digital nowadays, so it's high time I get used to it.
Maybe I'll even make a Steam account...

Let me guess shot gun collecting is buying multiple games at ones focusing on multiple things as in the spread shot of a shot gun.

Yup. 8) Though, I sense sarcasm from your post. :P Haha.
I had no clue just guessed on the real life shot gun concept no sarcasm here :D
I would say I'd follow the ways of second-rate sniper rifle collecting ;)

Second rate sniper collecting... Is that like aiming for one target but hitting the bloke behind them instead? ;D
You could put it that way :D

I don't think my collecting ever shifts, but I change my mood sometimes. I may be focusing on DreamCast for a time, and then, after a while, I can feel more like collecting for the GameCube or the PS1 for example. But the Master System, Sega Saturn and PC Engine are always on my radar.
-
My shifts generally stay withing the confinements of Sony. Lately it's mostly been Vita, and PS4, but from time to time I'll seek out PS2, PSP, and PS3 releases. It's been awhile since I've gone after a PS1 game normally due to the higher prices they garner for the ones I want.
I'd love to focus on collecting PSP games once we have the funds to close in the garage and convert half of it to my office. I played the PSP like crazy for about two years, then sold it like I idiot, only to buy another one and then drop it into the toilet. Somehow, I checked it years later and it works like a charm. The PSP had so many great titles I missed out on.
