Video Game Database Discussion / The Rating List
« on: October 12, 2017, 01:09:13 pm »
I was searching for a rating guide for video games on the net but i couldn't find anything that suited me, i was even shocked by how incomplete some guide are, like the English Wikipedia page of the USK rating. So i thought "why not make one myself ?" and... well here it is. It's certainly not complete and probably have a few lot of errors, in the guide itself and also grammatically (English is not my native language), so feel free to correct me and even contribute if i forgot anything (which i certainly do).

General / Re: Do you buy games you know you probably won't play?
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:34:16 pm »
In a way yes, i only buy games that i know i want to play but sadly i also know that i already have too many games and too little time to play them all, so some of them will probably never be played (tested at least, to see if they works, but not played, and i don't even consider games that doesn't work, like some pc games i have on Steam).

America's 10 Most Wanted (PS2 - EU)
https://vgcollect.com/item/133307

While making edits i've made a mistake, please reject any edit i've made on the title of that item, sorry for that :-[.

I put in the reject on it that was in the queue. Hope it was the correct one.

Nope but don't worry i just have to make a new edit for it, it was my fault anyway  ;)

Today i was in a used shop to sell a few DVD (i need to make some space on my shelves) and i found a few PS1 and PS2 games that i didn't have in the 1€ section:

PS1:
360 Three Sixty
Music
N-Gen Racing (Best of Infogrames - no manual)
RC de GO! (no manual)

PS2:
Destruction Derby Arenas
Fighting Fury
Free Running
Mouse Trophy
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Road Rage 3 (i already have it in my collection but i never seen this variant before, a second [FR] variant to add in the database  ;D)
Silpheed: The Lost Planet
Super Trucks (no manual)
Tokobot Plus: Mysteries of the Karakuri (with the wrong manual inside, it's the one from Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness)

I also got three controllers for free from a friend, a Cheetah SGQP2B (a turbo pad for MegaDrive/Genesis i think, i'm not a big Sega gamer, never played anything on the Master System and the MegaDrive; and i don't even own a Saturn), a QuickShot QS-1300 (for the Saturn apparently) and a QuickShot QS-1500 (for PS1), the Cheetah need a bit of cleaning but the two QuickShot are in a pretty good state.

American Pool II (PS2 - EU)
https://vgcollect.com/item/55875

After hours of research about that game, i think i can say that the game was cancelled, there is NOTHING anywhere on the net about that game except for a front cover that seems to be a stock photo and a possible release date in 2007 (which change on almost every site i go), even the only item number i could find (it's on NintendoAge) is wrong (SLES-00003 is the item number of a PS1 game: Jumping Flash). There isn't any videos or even a picture of that game,  the only talks about it are from people who want to get a Full Set of the PAL PS2 games and try to know if that game was really released or not, no one seems to own it on any collecting site and it doesn't even exist on any emulation site (so i can't even consider it "Unreleased")... so yeah, i'm 99.9% sure that i won't be wrong if i say that the game was cancelled and i ask for the deletion of that item.

I've got a few games for free from a friend (he apparently also got them for free during a yard sales this last week-end when he bought a big lot of DVD, he got two big boxes full of DVD and a few others stuff, like those games, most of them are in a pretty bad state, some of them like that Adventure Hall of Fame for PC was at the bottom of one of the box, crushed by all the DVD but hey i can't say no to free stuff 8)... especially when it's good games like those  :o), so this is what i've got from him:

PS1:
Alundra (no manual or front cover, but seriously that the fourth one i've got this year and i think i don't have anyone else to give it to now)
Fighting Force
Grudge Warriors
Pandemonium 2
Rage Racer (oh yes, i wanted to find that one back, i played a lot with my brother back in the days but sadly that was one of the "lost games" from my moving a few years ago)
Tekken - Platinum
Time Crisis: Project Titan
Twisted Metal: World Tour

Xbox:
Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance
Destroy All Humans!
Wreckless: Mission Yakuzas

PC:
Adventure Hall of Fame (a big box that contains Die by the Sword, Die by the Sword: Limb from Limb, Fallout, Les Chevaliers de Baphomet (aka Broken Sword) and Stonekeep)

In those boxes he also found a Tiger LCD that was only released in France called LNF ("Ligue Nationale de Football") and yesterday morning i've had the BIG surprise to receive my Super Nintendo Classic Mini (a few days before the release  8), but the site where i've pre-ordered it still say that my order have still not been shipped yet... ???).

114
Thanks for letting me know.  How much is it?  Feel free to PM me.

Sorry for the wait, here are the pictures (also sorry the crappy quality, i had to took pictures with my old phone...)

The bump on the front (only on the box, the front cover don't have anything)

A closer look

The bump on the back side (that bump is also on the cover this time)

There is a few little scratches on the front side of the disc (nothing worse than what i point with the arrow)

Same thing on the back side, a few little scratches here and there but there is one who is a bigger than the others (the one that i point with the arrow)

The barcode and item number

The manual and one other insert (that insert also have the same barcode and item number than the box on the top)

As for the price, i will ask for the same price than what my friend paid for which mean : Nothing, yep the game will be free (he's a huge movie collector and he got that game for free, along with a few others, when he bought a big DVD lot), the only unknown variable is the shipping price, i will try to check that during the end of that week (or during the start of the next at the latest) and i will send you a PM with that information when i will have it.

A friend was checking a yard sales for me this week-end and he found the French platinum variant in case you still don't have it, i still haven't see it but apparently it's used, not in a perfect state (one little bump on both sides of the box and a few scratches on both sides of the disc) but it's complete (with manual and one other insert), the item number on the spine is the same than the original version so SLES-54355 but it's SLES-54355/P on the disk, barcode is 5060121820975. I can take a few pictures when i get it tomorrow if you want to see it before taking a decision (but hearing about it's state, it will probably not be the best one to add in your great collection).

Yes, for notification purposes, I hope someday there could be some page a user could look at to show items that are in their collection that were updated or where an item they have in collection was merged with some other item. Currently if I have to do a revert on an item (as described in your quote) I will look into the Collection tab and will likely PM someone about having to change it. I think the last one I did for this was one that Blurks put an edit on a game that was made as EN/UK game, but somehow changed to a Germany release. I sent the PM to him to say that I had fixed the entry and he might need to add the version he really has if he wants. I obviously can't send a PM to everyone who has it in collection to say the entry was wrong for a long time and finally fixed. :(

Yeah, that is one feature that i would like to have on that site, knowing if an item in your collection have been edited in any way (probably not as PM, like you do it manually; and i thank you for that ;); but like you said maybe in another page where users can check those informations in they want)

Quote
But even I can tell some things are not "correct" with my own collection because of edits/merges in the past. I just haven't gone about to figure it out. The only thing I stay ontop of is the Genesis portion, but yeah... a user's collection accuracy is their responsibility and it isn't super easy to know what has changed.

Yeah my collection too need a lot of work but sadly i'm not able to add any of my games anymore, my scanner just broke down three days ago (it worked for less than a year... well i can't say anything about a 20 bucks printer/scanner, even the ink cost more than that... and seriously for that price the quality of my scans were pretty good, one of the last game i've scanned for example). I can't scan and add any of my games, i'm not in the mood to play and i'm stuck at home with a lot of free time lately so... "Why not doing a little work in the database, like cleaning the only section where my collection is up to date, the European Playstation 2 section !"... that's surprising but it's less messy than what i expected, with all the games that exist for that console and all the variants for the European release i seriously thought i was going to quit after the first page ;D

Oh i have an actual error to report this time:

Las Aventuras de Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius: Jet Fusion (it will be called like this once the edits are accepted)
https://vgcollect.com/item/119067

I ask for the back cover of that item to be deleted, the source of that cover is this one and if you check it you can see that it's marked near the bottom, there is a "By Bl" or "By 81" or something like that on the back cover but that's not why it should be deleted, the best part is that the back cover is heavily edited: all the data on the bottom side is for another game: Onimusha 3  (SLES-51914 and barcode: 5055060922118). I couldn't find any back cover for that variant to confirm if it could be an actual cover error (even if i'm sure it's not, but just in case i keep that picture on my computer to re upload it if i'm in the wrong).

The number one rule on a category is that no two items should have the same title. So in a case where the only release of a game is limited to one country, it needs no TLD because there is no other version. For example, there are some instances of Nintendo platform games that only had 1 release in Germany and no other release in another European country. It needs no TLD because there are no other entries that you need to differentiate from.

For EU categories, ordering would work like this:

1. EU English release
2. UK English release gets [UK]
3. other countries get their TLD

or

1. UK English release
2. Other countries get their TLD

Yeah i always tend to forgot that some games didn't get released in every country, so no TLD is needed when there is only one EU release, even trough it is not in English or if the title change between country, ok thank you.

Quote
For editing entries, I would tend to go with the history of the item. For the Naruto example, since it has the correct back image (clearly see it is not English text) and barcode is present, it is clear to be the French version. It would be allowed to put [FR] onto that title as long as the other entry is added. You can think perhaps it is unfortunate that there would be at least 20 people who would then have the wrong game into their collection, but nothing would have changed really. The other side is that many people do not care about variants or the exact game they have, so they are not effected. This is a common thing in the EU category, where people do not seem to realise (or care) that there are many different versions, likely because most just have a different cover or manual and the disc is the same.

That is basically what i wanted to do, when i can see what variant that game is really is i edit the title to reflect it (if no drastic change have been made in the history tab) and add a new entry for the Uk/En variant.

Quote
For Ar Tonelico example. A user changed the item to FR by adding the barcode and back version. It should be reverted to the EN/UK version if it already does not exist into the database by way of replace the back art and fix the barcode. Because of this type of edit, this is the type of item that should be put into Listing Errors because an admin may not allow that type of edit. I can take care of this entry now.
EDIT: I cannot find an English EU or UK release of this game. Only France and Italy.

And when an item have been edited to the point where we can't know what was the original item we revert it to the UK/EN variant (if such variant still doesn't exist in the database and if such variant exist of course...). That was pretty surprising for Ar Tonelico but i just made some research and yeah there isn't any English variant of that game, the game was only released in France, Italy and Spain so i will edit the actual entry we have in the database with a [FR] and add two another entry for the [IT] and [ES] variant (when i find them).

Quote
For .hack, I changed the titles. It seems to be the intent, Check the entries and see what you think.

That's good for me, i will edit the, now, German variant with the actual German back cover and any data i can find about it.

Thank you for all your answers Tripredacus 8)

Hardware and Tech / Re: Opinion on modded consoles
« on: September 21, 2017, 10:34:20 am »
Being a PAL gamer, getting a modded PS2 was the only option if I ever wanted to play the massive number of games that never got an European release.

This. Getting a PS2 that could read any game from any region was the only way for me to play games like Suikoden III, Radiata Stories or the trilogy .hack//G.U. since they were never released in Europe so i took my first PS2 (a FAT model) to a shop that could modify it (they also cleaned the insides and changed the lens) and that console served me well for 8 more years before breaking down (well it's still working but after 5 minutes the color of the screen goes from a full pink to a black and white image...), so i got into the same shop and took another PS2, again a FAT one, already modded this time (with a system that can read any game for PS2 AND PS1 this time, the previous couldn't read any PS1 games), and that console is still working well (Just in case i brought another one since they were pretty cheap at the time).

Modifying the outer shell... no, i never done that or ever got a console that was modded like this but lately i got three console for free who are in a pretty bad state (a PS1 broken on the back, a very yellowed GameBoy with a non-working screen and a non-working original Xbox, it doesn't even start)... Since they will probably never work again, i'm very tempted to learn how to modify them, i don't think i will be ever able to repair them but maybe i can give them another life as decoration in my collection.
