Title: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: matt on September 07, 2011, 03:30:08 pm
Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking to redesign the homepage and turn it in to something more than a simple login screen. I'd love to incorporate some community pictures into the design. If you have any photos you think are front-page worthy, please post them here. The plan is to rotate through the photos as well as link them directly to your collection page as examples of what the site can do.

Thanks!
Matt

EDIT: Make sure photos are 1000px or greater in width.
EDIT 2: They also need to be landscape...
EDIT 3: The photos need to look pretty too :) (Scott will color correct them)
EDIT 4: They need to fit in this:

sweet idea. ill try to get a good picture of my shiznit :D

alex said I just got FFVI in the mail. Ive got all superfamicom ff games for the picture :D

Edit: Have a huge picture, some red might need cropping out but it's the only way i could make it so the flash wasn't blinding.

Its so weird seeing the "real" box art for FFXII. I'm so used to the Limited Edition's box.

Post by: madmax on September 07, 2011, 11:38:05 pm
Yeah I still need to get one of those collectors editions. They go for $80 sealed I think which is pretty decent

Edit, if the picture is too wide you can crop out the Blu rays

edit2: also @matt. will we be able to have pictures of our collections updated once in a while? my collection grows in size pretty quickly. (I wont want a new picture for every single game I get :p )

After this weekend is over I might be able to get some pictures of my gameboys...I've got like 20 now, different models, so that might be a good one.

Yeah it does, now it's a whole bunch more interactive. Now if someone happens to land on the front page they won't be put off, thinking they need to make an account just to see what it's all about.

I forget who has all those arcade games and pinball machines but a picture of those would be awesome for the front page!

I'm a little dissapointed that I always have to log out to see it. especially since it remembers I'm logged in xD *annoying Max is never happy (sorry)*

I don't have anything terribly presentable... maybe I'll fix up my retro-gaming area to make it looks all nice and take a picture of that... but first, Disgaea 4 time!

I agree... would you admins consider having the VGC logo connect to the front page rather than our collections?  There's already a "my collection" link up there...

How's this?

My PS skills aren't what they used to be for sure (nor are my photo skills). I can't seem to get rid of that glare on the right side of the photo. Maybe @scott can :)
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: andrew on September 11, 2011, 12:30:18 am
If @scott can work some magic, then this might work. I know the quality is poor, but this is about the best I can do. The pic was taken with my iphone.

If this doesn't work, then I would be willing to redo the whole photo.

Edit: The photo looks even worse than I thought. Let me know whether or not it can be brought to life.

Along with madmax and my pics. I now have @andrew, @brettybluevein, & @darko's images saved, just need to have matt add them to the front page.

err, wait. @darko, yours is too small. Do you have an unmodified version of the image?

Looking at the front page, I see how this would complicate things a little. It doesn't have any links to pages on it (my collection .etc). The login "square" would need to become something else if there wasn't a redirection and then the other pages would need a home tab/link.

Might be a little more complex than I thought it would be initially :/

@andrew, @brettybluevein and @pceslayer's collection pics are now on the front page! @darko we can still add yours if you can get me a larger image, the current one will be super pixellated if I stretch it too much. :\

Thanks for all the shots! You all rock my world.

As for the actual function of the home page, your best bet if you want to see it is to simply not always stay logged in. Updating the logo link doesn't make functional sense and 99% of the time users just want to jump back to their main collection page. I'll see if I can come up with some other options tho.

@brettybluevein I should be able to, no problem. You want this in place of the arcade image? Or we could save it until we need to freshen up the front page.

Just took it so you had an extra image, use it when you rotate the next set of photos or whatever. I like seeing my arcade collection up there!

Ok, I've got two here. Whichever fits best is fine.  And sorry about the beige background, we live in a townhouse and can't repaint.

I bet this gets formatted very pretty too, ha! (Seriously though, anything I can do on sizing or if you'd like to see things moved around and another pic taken, let me know!)

Not at all!  But then again, I'm a girl :)
Great pics!  I really want that sheep... I saw it when it came out as a pre-order and have been meaning to find it ever since.  They're probably my favorite animal in the game.  The tiny chick (the chicken, too) that you can hold on your head is a close second.  We'll need to get you the alpaca to round it out!

Also, @amauriel I didn't care much for Innocent Life... Have you played that one?
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: scott on September 14, 2011, 02:03:35 pm
Nice! Plushie cuteness OVERLOAD!

I think I like the 2nd pic better and there's no problem with the beige background. I'll fix it up later tonight and save it with the rest. As for putting it on the front page, we're gonna keep the images down to 5 or 6 at a time. So we might wait to add it when we rotate fresh pictures into place... I'm not sure if @matt has decided when we should swap new images in and out.
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: darko on September 14, 2011, 02:32:03 pm
Would it be possible to put all of them in the database and randomize the image order? That way you wouldn't have to manually change the order/pictures all the time. I don't know the structure of the site so I don't know if it's even possible. Just an idea.

I like it, then we could put in multiple pictures for users, like brettybluevein's Arcade and Mario collections or my Game Boy and Castlevania stuff etc, etc. The more the merrier equals more randomness.

Thanks everyone! My husband was hilarious about it too: "You mean people WANT to see pictures of those stupid things?"

But then he was very sweet. The second one was my favorite too. I liked getting the two cows into two different positions. I checked: One was for A Wonderful Life, the other was for Tree of Tranquility and says 10th anniversary on the tag, if anyone is trying to eBay the collection.

And yeah, a randomizer would be awesome. Eventually we'll have a house with a game room and I can more easily get all these pictures. I have at least as much stuff for Zelda as well, my husband has a scary big Resident Evil collection (tons of action figures along with all the games and controllers) and I recently got a Japanese R.O.B. and would like to get some good pictures with the two of them.

Randomizer works now. I also lowered the quality of the images so they load faster. Currently we still only have the ability to use 1 image per user, but I'm sure @matt can come up with something. Also, I noticed @darko's image isn't up yet, so we'll need to fix that.

Currently we are running with 6 images so it might not seem different. As we add pictures it will become more and more random.

Can there be a photos section/link in our profiles or collection page?  Would be nice to look at someone's collection or profile and then be able to take a look at how they've got things arranged.

Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: matt on September 28, 2011, 12:40:16 pm
haha guilty as charged. I try to pack my weekends with as many activities as possible, especially during the summer months. I spent this past weekend up in Atlanta, MI (also known as the middle of no where) with my lady friend and her family. Atlanta's claim to fame is that they are the elk capital and this past weekend was the annual Elk Fest where the townsfolk and hunters from all over get together for all sort of redneck activities. I went to a demolition debry, competed in a pizza eating contest, competed in a rubber chicken tossing contest as well as many other ridiculous things. Fun times. :)

Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: hexen on September 29, 2011, 05:03:36 am
@scott Not yet. I've been being careful about what I submit ATM. So far only games and a few pieces of hardware. The bobbleheads are pretty official for the most part, but if I went totally coo-coo bananas with my non-game game stuff there would probably be a humongous list of things with unknown origin that not many would have and even fewer would know how to search for. With your go ahead, I'll definitely add the bobbleheads as I know the origin of about 90% of them, and I'd be happy to do it.

Took a couple more photos. Still trying to readjust everything into a more photo-friendly layout. Let me know if you can do anything with them.

I really like the Atari 800XL picture, I think people should be allowed to put more than one picture in the randomizer but not more than say...3? I only have one to put but a lot of people have so much cool stuff to show off. The Atari 800XL for example isn't really showing of the collection but it's pretty darn cool and would look awesome if displayed.

Here's my new collection image, I just uploaded it to the server. Also here is a full view of it, I left out my loose carts of Castlevania 1-3, Majesco Super Castlevania IV, the 4 GBA games and the Tiger Simon's Quest...

I like how you displayed the GB games!  Very pretty... @scott, the window dresser of VGC!

@dstone @forte and @hexen your images are now up on the front page! woot.

Also, I tried playing with the edits, but @forte's image is really rough. If you could maybe try to get some more light on them and snap a new one that would be most excellent, Thanks.

@scott, I'm expecting a few more pieces to the collection, I'll try to take some more pics this weekend. my problem is I have so much stuff and no panoramic camera!

@forte best trick for panoramic is to take a few steps back and have an empty border at the top and bottom of the frame. Than you cut that out :p

No problem, I needed a better pic for insurance purposes anyhow! I need to take a pic of my whole collection to show you guys, I've got way more than just Mega Man games. They're what I'm most proud of though. I've got NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, GCN, PS3, Wii, Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, SwanCrystal, PSP CIB systems and games. That will take time to gather up though lol

Awesome, having folks around here, like you and @madmax, who focus on mostly a certain franchise or series has really helped me focus on my Castlevania collection. But I also have lots and lots of other things too.

btw @forte super jealous of the Mega Man 9 press kit.

@pacpix cool, try using some more light, It will help with the grain. Even if it's just an extra desk lamp pointed in the general direction. When I take photos I actually use a desk lamp and a floor lamp aimed at items. The hard part is playing with glare/ reflections.

@maverickrenegade I could prolly make that work. The point is to showcase folk's stuff on the main page, so if you just wanted to show off Snow Brothers then I don't see a problem with it. The image rotater chooses 5 random images that are in the folder so the more the merrier!

I'm planning to buy some shelving for these, but I wanted to show how large my collection has gotten. And that's STILL not all of it, I couldn't get the PC games to fit in the frame (and the Star Force games still got cut off at the bottom). Still...that's a shitload of Mega Man

@forte I'll see what I can do about updating that image. I still don't have access to the ftp yet though... and have a couple more to upload for other folks too, including an updated one for myself. Speaking of an updated image here's a new shot of my wall with Dracula X, Kid Dracula and Konami Collector's Series: Castlevania & Contra. Just need Castlevania: Double Pack for the GBA for one of every game released in the States. woot.

Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: forte on February 26, 2012, 07:49:22 am
No need to update the image, you had to crop the last one and that one isn't as good of a picture. I have no idea how to properly display what I have without going out and buying expensive shelving, so I've been keeping it in a wooden cabinet until I can do so. The cabinet doesn't display well at all so I have to take it out like that to get pictures. The sheer number of games makes it hard to do so, by my last count there were close to 100.

Now that Castlevania set up, that's what I'd like to be able to do!
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: darko on February 26, 2012, 01:43:51 pm

The shelving @scott is using isn't very expensive. It's the same thing I used to display my consoles.

Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: forte on February 26, 2012, 04:00:44 pm
I know that shelving isn't that costly, what I meant is I wish I could shelve mine so easily. With about 100 Mega Man games alone and all the figures and art books and such, I will need a lot more than that lol. I still need to get pics of all my posters too...

Shelves only equal sun damage if you have them near a window and they are always being shined on. If they aren't near a window or the blinds are never open, then you have nothing to worry about. I say, all the money I've spent on these things, if it's not set out on display then I'm doing them an injustice.

My sister just bought a house and it's making me sick...she's got this beautiful huge finished basement. I took one look around and I was like "Hmm, the arcade cabinets and my XBox display here...and a few hours and some wood and we could make a media closet right there....and run cables behind that wall to a TV hung right here..."

At the rate I'm going, I'm going to be at least 40 before I have an actual house.

Such a simple solution to the sun problem. Everyone should heed these wise words. I have wooden blinds and I'm not worried about sun at all with them.

Looked into UV glass but you'd better be ready to pay. It's not exactly the most cost-friendly solution.
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: scott on February 29, 2012, 04:18:13 pm
@maverickrenegade I can't use that image, it's not got enough side to side spacing and I can't fit the whole cart into the image. If you could take another picture, maybe not zoomed in as much that would be helpful.

Also don't forget, if you want we can put a pic of some of your stuff into the rotation on the front page. The image just has to accommodate for the shape of the front page image. So if you want to, take a look at some of the others as examples. Then just provide me with a few pics I can play with.

Updated Castlevania Collection pic. I took the new figs out of their boxes and set them up on the shelving unit. I also took the loose NES carts and the loose copy of Super Castlevania IV down. Also, the figures are pretty nice and stand well on their own, only the succubus came with a stand and they all have varying degrees of articulation, with Simon being the most posable. I set up all the little pack in items on the bottom shelf too (and apparently the Succubus' top comes off)

Definitely the most important part !

But on a serious note, I kind of like the way you have yours displayed as compared to my DQ stuff. I may get rid of the case and use some wall shelves for my own.

I'm surprised I've never seen GB carts displayed like that with the individual cases.  Pretty ingenious.  Looks great!  Hopefully as this eternal task of cleaning my room plods along, I'll be able to take a photo of everything...

Wow all of your collections put mine to shame. I thought I had an impressive one (still adding to the site) since I have about 2,000 games at least, but hardly any of my games have the boxes. Where do you guys typically find boxed games?
Title: Re: Looking for Collection Photos
Post by: soera on July 20, 2012, 02:13:27 pm
Boxes, for the most part, are actually less common and more expensive than the games themself. I used to collect boxes but its such a pain. Cardboard is so fragile and gets rips and bumps and ends up looking like crap fast unless you put everything in a special protector. Boxes also take up more room (even more with the protectors). If I find a game anymore with a cardboard box and I end up buying it, I sell/donate the box to someone.

Yea it seems to be a pain collecting the boxed games, but I do like having them. This weekend I actually found a boxed Intellivision with a sealed Intellivoice and 30 boxed games all for $25.

Well I actually had an awesome weekend yardsaling. I'll post more later once I find everything. As for Intellivision games off the top of my head I got Utopia, Tower of Doom, Space Hawk, Space Spartans, Microsurgeon, Novablast, D&D, D&D II, Sub Hunt, Burgertime, Bombsquad, Atlantis, Bowling, Dracula, Dragonfire, Las Vegas Pokwer & Blackjack, and Pitfall. That is all I can remember off the top of my head. Overall the weekend was great. I ended up getting a ton of games, a Sega Genesis/CD with hard case, Sega Saturn, Intellivision, Intellivoice, and a bunch of controllers, wires, and various Game Gear and Genesis things all sealed.  It was the most I ever spent in one weekend yardsaling, but I feel like it was well worth it. I will post more later when I go home and can see it all.

Thanks! I really like the way it looks vs the case I had them in. They are more visible and just more appealing this way. And it let me add all my DS/PS1 games and DW IV map which I didnt have room for before. I am considering moving all my guides along the bottom (they are way too heavy to fit on a glass shelf).

Most of the boxed games I have I found when I started seriously collecting about 6-7 years ago.  I could routinely find them in used game stores and the prices online were pretty reasonable.  Now I'm lucky if I can find 3 boxed NES games a year out in the wild and the prices online are too steep to justify going after them any more.  I think the last time I added a boxed NES game to my collection was about six months ago.

Yup, just toss me a fairly large image with a good width and I'll cut it down to fit our holder. Then, once I figure out how to upload images to the server again, I'll get yours and all the newer ones put on the front page rotation.

Is logging out of the website the only way to view the cycle of collection banners? Clicking the vgcollect banner when I'm logged in takes me to my collection rather than to the homepage.

Ya, the "frontpage" is only basically a log in page. I'm not sure if Matt has plans on making it so if you click the header it'll take you to it or not. But ya, the only way to see it is to log out.

Whoops, I'll see if I can edit it to make it look cool. Then I'll add it. ;)

Also, I haven't added the last few to the cycle yet, since I'm not sure how to upload it any more. I'll add that to my to-do list for our next work day.

Alrighty. I finally got my FTP stuff figured out and updated the front page images! If you guys want to update your images or add one to the rotation, just post it up and I'll get it uploaded.

So we now have Kimimi's image up, Forte's updated image and I also updated my own image.

I myself had much the same idea and was thinking to suggest it back when I joined. I will likely be among the last to contribute. Considering making my entire media wall (yes wall) the backdrop and have all my collector editions in the foreground of picture. Easy enough to collage with Photoshop Elements.

Don't mean to get too far off topic
I love the front/login page, but I wish when we clicked on "view collection" that our collection pages
had a header with our game room/ collections on it.
I love seeing everyone's collections!
Just wondering if it would be possible?  ;D

There will be a new bio portion on the new site that may scratch this itch. Not sure it we'll incorporate images there but I'm now just starting to play around with more personalization options like this.
