I debated the following two:

- BotW/GTA/Skyrim (Open World . . . Do Whatever)
- Zuma (Puzzle)

Zuma just missed the list.

Open World missed the list because of the little time I have to game these days.

Timesplitters 2 (Shooters)
Mario Kart 64 (Racing games)
Demon's Souls (Difficult Rewarding experiences)
Zelda BotW (Open world do what you want games)
Tetris Attack (Puzzle games)

Do it! It's my favorite 3DS games of all time and beat out Final Fantasy Tactics as my favorite strategy-RPG.

Wow, this is HARD. I like about every genre except sports games, so it's difficult to reduce it to just 5.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) - side scrolling beat 'em up
2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - action/exploration
3. Bioshock Infinite - story-driven FPS
4. Final Fantasy VI - RPG
5. Vampire Savior - fighting

A few of my all-time favorites, like Q*Bert and Shadow of the Colossus, don't fit in a list like this because they're so unique they don't really represent a specific genre.

Interesting topic.

Based on games I have played all the way through, I would say...

Mega Man X
Pokémon Gold Version (although Red Version was my first in the series, and I hold many fond memories, I put more hours in Gold than any other)
Final Fantasy IX
Metal Gear Solid
Shadow of the Colossus Kingdom Hearts II

EDIT: Nope. As much as I like Kingdom Hearts II and spent countless hours in it, Shadow of the Colossus is just too amazing to not include in this list. Drakengard should also be listed here somewhere, but what was listed is a good representation of my overall "tastes".

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Of course I play other games and love other games besides Zelda, but I really do love those games and it's the genre I like too.

Final Fantasy IX - Grand sense of adventure with charming characters.
Life Is Strange - Interactive Narratives.
Gravity Rush -  Charming, Imaginative, fun over the top Japanese Action.
Silent Hill 2 - Strong Character driven stories.
Shenmue - World building focused on areas with depth to investigate rather than bland environments with scale.
