Title: 2018 Games You Are Excited For
Post by: kamikazekeeg on January 07, 2018, 04:29:18 pm
It's a year of newness, so what are you looking forward to playing this year?

Right off the bat, Monster Hunter World is coming up at the end of the month and I'm pretty excited for it as a Hunter noob, being that I was always interested in the series, but never jumped into it for a number of reasons.  I play the beta and it's pretty nuts, so it should be fun.

Also this month unfortunately is Dragon Ball FighterZ, releasing the same day as Monster Hunter World, so it might have to wait.  I'm not the biggest fighting game fan, but this is one of the best looking Dragon Ball games I've ever seen, plush it's gonna have a killer soundtrack.

Metro Exodus is way up on my list as I'm big fan of post apocalyptic settings and in particular I really loved the last two games.  Top quality atmosphere.

Valykria Chronicles 4 was a welcomed surprise for me, as I've been wanting another game since they released the first one on PC.  And that Revolution spinoff didn't interest me at all.

Code Vein I'm hoping turns out good as it basically seems like anime Dark Souls and I'm totally cool with that.

Attack on Titan 2 is how you make a musou game really interesting and unique and I really enjoyed the first one.  Of course it does get repetitive, hard not to, but I loved using the 3D maneuver gear and they look to be really improving the sequel.

For the rest, it's quite a variety of stuff I'm either interested in, but not like super excited for, or I'm waiting to hear more on the game itself and how it may turn out...Like I was excited for the possibility of Anthem, but then EA fucked up Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Need for Speed with lootboxes and I don't even know anymore.  I gotta be worried for the next Battlefield game now! Dammit EA!

Anthem
Extinction
Far Cry 5
Darksiders 3
God of War
The Last of Us Part 2
Mega Man 11
Metal Gear Survive
Red Dead Redemption 2

Borderlands 3.  That's it.  Too many micro transactions and lootboxes to get excited about new games anymore.

Right now, there's 2 games on the horizon that I'm most interested in:

Dragonball FighterZ - The game just looks so amazing, and I hear nothing but praise from those that've played it. I'll probably suck at it, like I do with most fighting games that aren't SoulCalibur or Smash Bros., but as long as it's fun, that's what matters.

Dynasty Warriors 9 - I'm just a large fan of the Warriors games, to the point where I've gotten 13 100% completions in the series. So I'm doubting that I'll hate this one.

I was excited for Red Dead Redemption 2 until Take 2 announced all future games will have micro transactions / lootboxes in them.  What a waste.  I'm boycotting any game that uses those money scamming or pseudo gambling (lootbox) tactics.

Vampyr looks interesting but I'm waiting to see if it has any of those aforementioned tactics before I consider buying it.  :)

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory
Lost Sphere
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
Dragon Quest XI
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Yakuza 6

Think that's about it at this point in time.

I am mildly interested in Yakuza 6, because I want to like the series more, but some things were holding me back.  I'm new to the series and I beat Yakuza 0 last year and liked some things about it, but I felt like a lot of the side stuff and story felt drawn out or clunky.

Playing Yakuza Kiwami now, I think I'm realizing that Yakuza 0 is what it is because it had to stick close to the remake, which was essentially a remade Playstation 2 game.  Yakuza 0 had better production as a new entry, but these two games are almost indistinguishable outside of their timeline really, especially since Yakuza Kiwami has actually throwbacks to stuff done in Yakuza 0, so it's this weird aspect of a game that is a prequel to the original game, but the original game is now new and references the prequel.  It's this amorphous Yakuza blob filled with lots of punching lol

So I'm hoping that with Yakuza 6 being it's own new property, built to be the best installment, taking advantage of all the benefits of a modern game, it'll be a much better experience overall.

I don't mean to be a turd in the punch bowl, but there aren't any games being released this year, as far as I know, that i'm overly excited about. Shenmue 3 is supposed to come out this year, but I would honestly be shocked if it did; I'm expecting this to come out late 2019 at the earliest. There are games like God of War, Dragonball Fighterz, and Dissidea NT that have me mildly excited, but I doubt I'll be getting any of these until they drop in price quite a bit. But we have a full year ahead of us and who knows what else will be announced and released this year! There just isn't anything at the moment that has my heart racing.

So far... nothing that's for sure. Feels bad man.

A few Kickstarter things I backed may finish. Bloodstained will hopefully be done this year, but who knows. Psychonauts 2 also has a tentative Q3 window, but that is even more hazy... I pledged full well knowing Tim Schafer has even odds of screwing the pooch. There are other ones that might be good I haven't backed or even know about, it's such a wildcard area willing to take more risks than the mainstream stuff I am increasingly bored with. Underworld Ascendant is something I might be interested in...

I dunno, we'll see how the year goes, it's early.

off topic but still

I can't believe that cereal is listed on this site, It might be scalped super mario cereal but It's pretty insane that it is in the data base wich basicly means that people keep the box and maybe content sealed   :o

I'm pretty sure box protectors for this cereal will follow and maybe some graded ones  ::)

Question.  For those of you who are eargerly anticipating Red Dead Redemption 2, are you still going to buy it and support the publisher and developer when you find out how much of a money scamming micro transaction/lootbox fest it'll be?  If it is even half of what Star Wars Battlrfront 2 was it'll still be a complete farce.  I'm genuinely curious how the average gamer will react to this change in the industry.  Either participating in it or boycotting based on principal.

You keep harping on this and it's getting annoying.  GTAV was riddled with micro transactions and everybody loved that game.  Why?  Because it offers a massive single player experience unparalleled by anything else out there, plus you get a massive online mode that is constantly and consistently updated with a massive userbase.  Very likely RDR2 is going to be exactly the same.  You'll likely only see micro transactions in the online segment of RDR2 (RDO?).  And until Rockstar or Take 2 makes a statement saying otherwise, you won't be convincing me of your conspiracy theory bullshit that Rockstar, one of the last progenitors of the single player experience, is going to throw lootbox bullshit in our faces.

/rant

Also, fun fact.  Borderlands 3 will have micro transactions.  That's a fact.

I'm here for the single player campaign.  As long as I can get all the fun out of the game without paying more than the retail price, I'll be happy

Nothing personal, but, if you don't like my posts on this subject then don't pay any attention to it.  Problem solved.  :)  I asked a legitimate question around an issue that is currently a point of contention with the industry and its consumers in today's environment.  I'm compiling a case study right now on this issue, mostly because I work in market research and because it fascinates me.  Second, if you don't think R* will at some point add even more monetization with the addition of the lootbox then you're naive because Take 2 will demand it at some point.  Publishers and developers are out to make money, they are businesses, so do not forget that fact.  Just look at the paid mods thing Bethesda has done which has alienated their fan base--me included.  They used to be pro-consumer but they are now straying from that path with the paid mods thing.  Even consumer friendly companies can and will do it.  Another example is Bungie, just look at Destiny 2 and the sh*tstorm that is that game right now.  My co-workers who are hardcore fans are now even questioning if they will even give Activision/Blizzard and Bungie any more of their money in the future.  Also just because it is a single player game doesn't mean you won't get this stuff either, AAA publishers are actively perusing ways to monetize every facet of the gaming experience to make more money.  Hell EA and Activision/Blizzard have already gone out of their way to come up with ways to make this even worse.  If you don't believe me then you need to search youtube about it because it is everywhere.   8)

No sweat of my back.  If it is riddle full of them to the point of pay to win and or if lootboxes are put in then I won't buy it.  Pretty easy decision.  I've got over 1,000 games I haven't played that I own so I won't be hurting for games to play and of course I can always play Borderlands 2 and its DLC.  :)

Ok I've said my piece.   ;D  I'll leave you all and your topic so you can get back on topic.  Cheers!

Not naive, just not a conspiracy theorist jackass who expects the worst in everyone.  Rockstar already saw how much money they could make through GTAO, so they will likely continue that path because it was profitable.  Thinking that a company will automatically take it steps too far because it COULD make them more money is just plain stupid, especially during the current consumer climate and what the world did to Battlefront 2.  If you did research or knew anything, you'd know companies do risk models and make decisions based on what is good for the company in the long run.  Rockstar is not Activision/Blizzard or EA... both world renowned for being greedy jackasses.

Bethesda didn't betray anyone with what they did with paid mods, there are still plenty of free mods and they aren't in any way necessary for the game to play, they just facilitated a way from content creators to make money off of their hard work, if you are against that, then you are just a shitty person who feels entitled to all content at no cost.  If a mod maker makes a fantastic mod and wants you to pay for it and Bethesda has facilitated a way for that to be done, kudos to them, they deserve what money they will receive.  Many companies started out as mod makers and made their way to full fledged development companies.  That's how Tripwire interactive came to be.  Essentially if you are against what Bethesda has done, you are anti-indie dev scene.  You're the equivalent of the folks who think all artists should provide work free of charge or for "exposure".

Also, Borderlands 2 already has lootboxes with the golden loot chest.  Had they made it where you could buy golden keys, it'd be the same thing.  Only 1 step off from that.

I never buy lootboxes or anything like that. I play the single-player campaigns, and I earn my items through in-game play. Its not like the lootboxes are required to finish the game or anything.

Microtransaction depend on the game and how they are utilized.  I don't really care that GTA Online releases lots of DLC content for their players to buy and it wasn't something I liked much anyways, I played GTA5 for the singleplayer.  It'll be the same for RDR2.  As long as it has a deep and engrossing singleplayer campaign, that is what I want.  I'd buy the game without the multiplayer if I could.  There are certainly issues with predatory DLC practices that suck, but I don't see it being as bad as Battlefront 2, which has a very specific issue with its microtransactions.  Had they just gave the game normal progression and left the lootboxes as cosmetics, most wouldn't have been bothered by the game and it would've easily sold a bajillion copies.  Instead it'll only sell half a bajillion and make people wary of upcoming games like Anthem or the next Battlefield.

I agree.

Battlefront 2 was the tipping point for how the industry employs lootboxes. It was inevitable that some greedy publisher would push it too far and suffer the backlash. Now I think a line has been drawn and we will see a return to the Overwatch cosmetics model, which is pretty harmless.

I'm happy as long as lootboxes don't start appearing as necessary to progress in single player campaigns.

The thing people don't realize is that before Battlefront 2, EA had already implemented this with NFS:Payback.  You couldn't upgrade your car without lootboxes.  Nobody batted an eye until you had Darth Vader locked behind a paywall.  EA took it a step too far with Battlefront 2 in the public's eye.  I think they had taken it too far when the lootboxes exceeded past cosmetic upgrades.

Tons of people noticed, it happened as the Battlefront 2 backlash was going on as they released within a week of each other, but most people didn't care, because it's Need for Speed and no one was interested in that game.  It just merged into what was going on with Battlefront 2, because that was a game people actually wanted lol

Can't argue with that.

I skipped the reboot because it had no pause.  They brought back pause, but replaced it with lootboxes.  I used to love the NFS franchise. Shame.

Last one I played was Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit on PC nearly 20 years ago lol

And with the recent Direct, I do have another game I'm interested in grabbing, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.  Loved it on Wii U, forced myself to play the new story on 3DS, and it would be nice to have it all compiled on a proper console with all the content and the few new features they worked in, like character swapping mid battle.  Wonder if it'll have any increased performance...Ran fine on Wii U, but there was some mild slow down when it got heavy with enemies.  Also mildly interested in Mario Tennis Ace for the heck of it, but I probably won't buy it anywhere near release.

The Mario Sports games are actually pretty damned fun.

I really only like very arcadey sports games and the last Mario one was so barebones and uninteresting, I figure with this having an actual style to it and a story mode, I'd be more inclined to pick up my first Tennis game since Mario Tennis on N64 lol
