Man i really wanted to be part of the steam last night!! I witched it this morning and it looks like everyone had such a great time!!!!  Sorry I couldn’t be there, next year for sure!

Justin. I'm working on a round two. I got a call from work literally 5 minutes before we went live and had to duck out.

Working on setting something up with Koemo1. :-D
When it's ready, you'll have to share the link!

Will do. In a couple of hours. I'm still on call this weekend. So pray to whatever science, gods, luck, karma ya'll believe in that I can make this one. :)

Classic Video Games / Re: What is your principal goal collecting games?
« on: December 19, 2020, 01:03:41 am »
My reason for collecting has changed many times.

First I didn't really collect. I just "never let go of stuff I got" and continued to get stuff.

Then while clearing out my garage one day I found a pencil and paper wish list I had made when I was a kid for if I ever "got rich".

So for a couple of years I worked on that until I checked off everything.

Then I moved on to obscure/lesser known titles and hardware.

Currently I collect physical releases of high quality repros, homebrews and translations of games for NES, SNES, and Genesis.

I also started collecting and restoring full size arcade and pinball machines.

As I get older my ability to "keep up with the current gen", for lack of a better way of putting it, has been faltering. I own Xbox One X and PS 4 Pro and several current gen games but rarely play them. I tried and failed to land pre-orders for PS4 and Xbox SeX.

I still have the desire to game and want new fresh experiences. But I can't devote any consistent time to it and I have too much on my mind that's pays the bills. So sticking to long games with intricate stories has become very hard for me even though I love those games. Switch has made it easier but I hate that everything is digital.

Both my work and life is rather high stress nearly all the time. Even before covid there have been large swaths of time where it just wasn't practical for me to leave the house or get away.

So my collector/gaming space has kind of become a mind palace, sanctuary, safe space if you will.

Each arcade game I have (and my baby Attack From Mars Pinball) connects me to specific memories and times in my life that I don't want to forget.

It's kinda like a time capsule. But I live in it. Sometimes I will just sit on the couch and listen to everything as it runs in attract mode.

I also like to tinker. Arcade and Pinball Machines require a lot of tweaking and tuning to keep running at their prime. Reading manuals and testing/fixing boards is (usually) relaxing to me and I enjoy learning how something I cherish from my past actually works under the hood. Restoring something as old as I am to near new reminds me that old does not have to mean broken, worthless, or obsolete and sometimes I really need that reminder as I get older.

Classic Video Games / Re: Letting go of the CRT
« on: December 19, 2020, 12:31:10 am »
I stupidly got rid of my 32" Samsung flat EDTV (540p) CRT about 6 years ago. Yes it was 200lbs and a pain in the ass. But it played everything below HD absolutely beautifully and worked with every generation of light gun games from NES to OG Xbox. I regretted it from the moment I drove away from the ewaste drop off site. (but I had nowhere to store it in San Jose but a non-climate controlled garage).

I managed to get a 37" ProScan standard def crt at a thrift store later. It's actually made by Technicolor and it's good, but not a flat glass and not quite as sharp as the Samsung. (no 540p).

If any of you do decide to get rid of your CRT (working or not) there is a Facebook group "The CRT Collective" I recommend posting there. Chances are someone there will gladly take it off your hands and put it to work.

Almost as penance for literally throwing away my Samsung I am committed to keeping the ones in my arcade alive by whatever means necessary:

Most of them have very little burn in.

Can we stream Zoom to Twitch though?
Should be able to.

I can most likely rig up something to get it on twitch, yeah.

If needed. :-) Happy to jump on to something hosted by someone else tho.

Double Dragon Neon

Detroit Become Human
Asphalt 9: Legends
Munsters Pinball

I am excited for all of it.

Also, Arcade gaming. :-)

That says, my Switch gets the most play as I can play anywhere.

Hopefully a physical version is released by some means. Perhaps by Limited Run Games or another similar publisher? If not, another de-listing seems inevitable.
I'm hoping full retail or bust.  I really hope it doesn't come from LRG.

The game wasn't that popular as a download only in the past

Sworddude. Apologies and no ill will intended but this is simply untrue. It was one of the best selling digital titles of 2010 and maintained that position well into 2011.

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/02/09/psn-sales-figures-announced/

It was delisted from the PSN just a few months after the heavily delayed DLC was finally released partly because the license ran out and party because there was some controversy since some of the pixel art in the first release of the dlc turned out to be copied verbatim from another (non Ubisoft) game.

https://robbydude.tumblr.com/post/41869737441/the-top-part-of-the-image-are-shots-from-the-new

Creator, Brian Lee O'Malley says he thinks a physical release is currently being considered.

Part of the reason folks were so vocal about the delisting was because many waited several years for the DLC that added online multiplayer only to miss the chance to purchase it. Folks that had been on the fence holding out to purchase at all for the inclusion of multiplayer also missed out.

Now we just need them to resurrect Turtles in Time Reshelled.

Scott Pilgrim is back, Holiday 2020.  That's all, that's the message.

Hell yes.

I want to get excited about this, I really do, however nearly everything regarding the PS5 so far has been a massive disappointment. Probably the most disappointing thing has been the intentionally vague and sparse details about anything related to it. I understood when this console was 6+ months out, but it's literally right around the corner and I can't remember being this un-hyped for any Sony console, ever. Hopefully my pessimism is unfounded and this ends up being the thing that gets me ultra hyped for the PS5, but I'm not counting on it.

I’m with you. I mean I’m getting the disc based one no matter what.

But mostly because of exclusives I expect will land at some future date and be amazing. Not because of any excitement for the console itself.

By contrast I can’t wait to play some of my Xbox One backlog with all the extra horse power of the Series X.

The high/solid frame rates and maxed out 4k dynamic resolutions are going to be awesome.

General / Re: Nintendo Switch or PS5?

Both. :-)

I thought you were down on the Switch. What brought you around?

Was never down on it. Just said (and stand by) that it didn’t pay to early adopt it. Especially if you already owned a WiiU and Xbox or PS4.

First two years all the games were available on those other consoles. I was also vocal that Nintendo was clearly looking to do a soft pull from the console market into handheld space and that even the name “Switch” was a metaphor for that. They just had to be careful and patient with 3DS users as they inevitably abandoned them.

Starting mid last year we started getting truly newer and fresh games. The new Switch hardware revision improves battery life and addresses long standing drift issues their controllers had in wireless mode from launch day. (How your controllers get through QA without working wirelessly is just further proof in my mind that portable was their focus and endgame the whole time. With tv/console usage just a nice to have).

Xbox Series X I expect to have a huge library and few hardware problems day one as it’s basically an Xbox One X++, with some serious backwards compatibility. SONY knows this and will likely have an equally serious PS5 offering to compete.

I said a couple times on stream that “mid 2019-2020 will be a great time to own a Switch”

Gotta correct myself and point out Turf was right that I was hard on the Switch when it first came out.

I criticized the anemic library, short battery life, poor wireless controller performance, and more expensive games.

https://youtu.be/lmle_poNDtA

Don’t get old folks. Memory loss is a bear.

That said I still owned one and truly wanted it to be successful.

Minute 102 here I talked about the potential I thought it had as a portable.
https://youtu.be/mHjKBmx7qM8

These episodes were one week apart but 3 years ago. I was quite conflicted.

But at 115minutes into the episode I say I think it will be great in 2018.

So what brought me around to now it’s a must own system?

Nintendo has been very aggressive with sales on the eShop. Over half the games on my switch I got for $5 or less.

The new Switch hardware has twice the battery life.

The wireless Pro Controller is expensive but solid.

As I’m adulting more, portability is becoming more important than graphics.

3rd party engagement has been high!!! Nearly the entire resident evil series and now games like Crysis, Fortnite, etc are on switch. Launching at the same time (or earlier) as other platforms.

Over time I transitioned from legitimate buyers remorse to being on the fence to being hopeful that 2019/2020 would be Nintendo’s year to seeing that hope become reality. :-)
