Sweet! I like a little bit of all metal. I have my own oneman acoustic metal band too, but Ive played in a few different bands.
I really miss classic Black Sabbath and Ozzy with Randy. I havent been a huge fan of most past Blizzard and Diary.
My absolute favorite bands are Cannibal Corpse and The Melvins.

We are in 100% agreement on this then, my friend!

(*Although*, credit where credit is due)...both Zakk Wylde & Jake E Lee were pretty damned fine guitarists in their own right...Ozzy, if nothing else, has had a knack for hooking himself-up w/ some of the best guitar talent that was available, IMHO
 ;)

I cant listen to Ozzy much anymore. Ive heard it so much in my local area that Im burned out on it. That and AC/DC

And Zakk Wylde should never sing ... One of the worst voices ever :P

Even though he wrote some cool songs with Ozzy, Im not a fan of Zakk. Especially BLS and Pride and Glory.

I like all kinds of music but there's a special place for metal in my life.

These day's I've been mostly into Nu-metal/Melodic screamo. I dono, the labels don't make much sense anymore.

I've been listening to these guys album alot since it came out earlier this year. I know a couple of the guys in the band, theyre sick. Their drummer is also a founder of Cephalectomy and just started a new band as well called Barra Xul.

I listen to some metal. Well, I mostly listen to metal, and a bit of rock (though nothing really "modern" since it all blows), though I'm really trying to find more stuff to listen to, I feel I don't have enough variety in my metal.

Gamma Ray, Edguy, Helloween, Iron Maiden (saw them live 2 months ago), Dio, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Avantasia, Megadeth, Powerglove, old Nightwish, some Dreamtheater, Warmen and... a bunch of other stuff, I couldn't remember it all.

Currently getting into Primal Fear and Accept after getting them suggested to me and I'm quite liking those so far.

Just went on youtube and listened to a random song (Death To All But Metal), and it was pretty fun. I'll probably look into them more eventually, gotta love the over-exaggerated glam rock style :P

It's great to see some love for Megadeth.  They've been my favorite band since I was in jr. high and switched from listening to radio-friendly pop to hard rock.  Faith No More was my gateway into harder stuff.  I bought the soundtrack to Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey because there was a Faith No More track on it.  It also had a Megadeth track, which was my first exposure to them and the rest is history.  Faith No More and Megadeth are still my two favorite bands.

Metal is probably my favorite genre.  I prefer thrash and symphonic metal over death/black metal.  My problem with the harder stuff is that it "cookie monster vocals" (as Dave Mustaine dubbed them) make it lose its hook and melodic quality.  Pure metal, thrash and 'lighter' stuff retains more of a melody.  Once I get into really heavy stuff, I can't tell one song from another.  I still like it though.  I have 6 separate custom metal playlists on Spotify, each with different metal genres.

That being said, my favorite bands:

Megadeth
Metallica
Pantera
Slayer
Disturbed
Bullet For My Valentine
Killswitch Engage
Five Finger Death Punch
Slipknot
Shadows Fall
Trivium
Dimmu Borgir
Children of Bodom
Kamelot
Therion
Nightwish
Epica
Rhapsody of Fire
Blind Guardian
Korpiklaani
Elvenking

Yes, I've heard Steel Panther.  They're pretty funny as long as you know they're blatantly offensive and a parody of 80's glam metal.  Easily the most misogynistic lyrics I've ever heard, so avoid listening to them around sensitive girls ;)

Ha Ha Ha!

Then again, mathematically, at least...just like two negatives = a positive; wouldn't (in the case of 'Infusion'), the two 'positives' (the "overly") *ALSO* cancel each other out...and equal a "negative"?!
:P

There's not near enough Metallica love in this thread.  They've been one of my favorite bands since I developed my own taste in music.

Metallica, Korn, and Avenged Sevenfold all share the top spot on my favorite band list.

I got to see Gwar in 2010 with Lamb of God and Job For A Cowboy. After being a fan of theirs for over 10 years, their show was everything I could have hoped for!

Heh King Diamond ... thats old old school right there. Motorhead isnt bad. Megadeth is pretty decent. I havent heard of the other two.

Does anyone else listen to Disturbed? Ive been a super fan since 2000 when they came out. I was the only global moderator for the forums for a long time (I still am but its a slow site cause the band has taken a big hiatus so I havent been there in a while).

Title: Re: Gamer Metalheads
Post by: jobocan on October 14, 2012, 04:25:52 pm
I wouldn't exactly call Disturbed metal (and I don't feel "nu-metal" is a real thing, it's just what used to be called "hardcore"), they're more hard rock/hardcore than anything. The only album of their's I really like is The Sickness, if only for Down with the Sickness and Meaning of Life. Otherwise... I don't mind a couple of their other songs, but overall I don't find them terribly interesting. You may enjoy it more than me though :P

I love King Diamond and Megadeth.
King Diamonds vocals are amazing. "GRANDMA WHAT WAS IT LIIIIKE?"

Lately the metal band Ive been listening to the most is Murder Construct, newer band by Travis Ryan the vocalist of Cattle Decapitation.

They have 6 releases. Sickness, Believe, Ten Thousand Fists, Indestructible, Asylum, and the Lost Children. Id recommend all of them other than Believe. Its quite a bit softer and slower than the others.

I wouldn't consider myself a metalhead in the slightest, but I do love me some black metal, especially the experimental/atmospheric variety.

I'm more into electronic/experimental/noise/industrial stuff.  :)

Slow is not a bad thing ... except when it totally changes the style of a band. If they started with slow music, thats one thing ... but if you listened to the Sickness and then got Believe expecting it to sound the same, you would be disappointed. (with that being said, there are still some songs on that disk I do like)

I'd say that too... It's why I don't like Death Metal, I never have any idea what they're saying and it's impossible to sing along to :P

Hell yeah! Right here. Metal-head for life.

Been listening to metal since I was about 11 years old, and I'm gonna be 30 in 2013.

I started off in the early 90s (I know, bad time for metal) listening to Metallica, Megadeth (my favorite band), Guns 'N Roses, and Alice in Chains. I was also into the Grunge scene at the time, which is supposed to taboo for metal fans but whatever;  stuff like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

From there I moved on to "Nu-Metal", as that was the fad then. Stuff like Sevendust, Disturbed, Mudvayne, Coal Chamber, etc.

Nowadays, I'm really into Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal. And, as uncool as it may be, I'm really getting into the 80s hair metal scene. But I listen to pretty much any metal outside of rap-metal hybrid stuff and straight death metal (never could get past the guttural vocals).

A long list of many bands I enjoy:

-3 Inches of Blood
-AC/DC
-A.F.I.
-Amon Amarth
-Amorphis
-Blind Guardian
-Children of Bodom
-Cinderella
-Dark Tranquility
-Demons & Wizards
-Disturbed
-Evenesance
-Fear Factory
-Five Finger Death Punch
-Guns 'N Roses
-Iced Earth
-In Flames
-In This Moment
-Insomnium
-Iron Maiden
-Journey (yep, Journey. What's it to ya?)
-KISS
-Lordi
-Megadeth
-Metallica
-The Misfits (I'm like the only Misfits fan that actually prefers Michael Graves over Danzig)
-Motley Crue
-Mudvayne
-Nightwish
-Queensryche
-Ratt
-Scar Symmetry
-Scorpions
-Skid Row
-Type O' Negative

Never thought I would say this..., but I am starting to like Death Metal.  Not really into the gore lyrics or lyrics I can't understand, but I'm really enjoying some of it.

Also listening to a lot of Judas Priest lately.  Painkiller has been my favorite album so far.

Yeah - I don't *dislike* BJ('s)  ;)

...I just prefer Bon Scott - same w/ Maiden...Dickinson's got a hell of a voice & an impressive range (comparable w/ Sebastian Bach-one of my favorite 'raw' voices); I just liked Diano/earlier albums better...maybe because it's what I was exposed to 1st?

On that note -while I wouldn't call Van Hagar "horrible"...IMHO; they just lost that VH chemistry w/o DLR.

Ha, I picked up the AC/DC Bonfire box set years ago and it's really cool. Lots of early takes and alternate takes. The book inside talks about Bon Scott and his life and on one of the CDs at the end of Ride On is a bunch of sound clips of Bon giving interviews. Really neat stuff. I still don't have all of AC/DC's Bon Scott albums, but eventually I'll finish that off.

...I just prefer Bon Scott - same w/ Maiden...Dickinson's got a hell of a voice & an impressive range (comparable w/ Sebastian Bach-one of my favorite 'raw' voices); I just liked Diano/earlier albums better...maybe because it's what I was exposed to 1st?

On that note -while I wouldn't call Van Hagar "horrible"...IMHO; they just lost that VH chemistry w/o DLR.

I'm like the opposite on all of those, lol. I like Brian Johnson better in AC/DC, I like Dickinson better in Maiden, and I prefer Van Hagar over Crackhead-Roth.

I'm opposite anyone whos posted yet haha. I just don't like either vocalist of ACDC, or the guitarist in the little schoolboy outfit (I can never remember his name), nor do I like Van Halen in any form (other than that one song Hot For Teacher).
And I guess if I had to pick a favorite for Maiden, it would be Dickinson. Just because I also like his solo albums. But I almost never listen to either lol  :P

I always like asking which vocalist people liked more in Cannibal Corpse, Chris Barnes or George Corpsegrinder Fisher.
I love both of them, theres not a CC song I dont love. But overall, I like Barnes more as a vocalist. They are both brutal, but Chris Barnes gutturals were way deeper, AND he wrote his own lyrics. Fisher has never written a single song for CC. I'm not sure if he wrote lyrics while he was in Monstrosity or not.

I notice people always bring up Paul and Bruce when it comes to Maiden.  I have got to be one out of like the five people on the planet that actually likes Blaze Bayley.  No one singer is my favorite, but they all have one hell of a dynamic that definitely sets them apart from one another.  Different eras I guess.   :P

As far as Cannibal Corpse goes I'm really not a fan.  So I have no idea who your talking about, sorry.  :-\

Just sitting here, relaxing after getting home from work and doing my running around and I've got my build it yourself internet radio station playing. After hearing 1 stellar song after another, I thought:

Damn, I've got good taste in music!

Last 4 songs: Omnium Gatherum - Greeneyes, Steelheart - Can't Stop Me From Loving You, Amorphis - Silver Bride, Alice Cooper - Poison.

Melodic Death Metal, 80s Hair Metal, Classic Rock, and Black Metal all within 4 songs of each other.

One of the best melodic-death metal songs I've heard in quite a while:

Metal is ageless, IMO. I'll listen to modern metal, and old-school metal. And enjoy the hell out of both. And if I can get some new, old-school metal; then that's fan-freaking-tastic!

And Blackie Lawless is one helluva stage-man. That is definitely one band I want to see live.

Ugh, I'll take my metal without the inclusion of religion, thank you.

Hah!

I think that this is the 1st time since (we have both) been here that I'm NOT on the same page/in agreement with you ko1ru  :o

To me, this implies that you're only interested in the lyrics over the actual music itself.

While, IMO, lyrics can definitely play a part in & enhance metal songs - the raw edge/power, acceleration, rythms, progressions, solos, chords, excitement, etc of the music itself is what's always drawn me to metal...

Just like I can enjoy listening to Pantera, Testament, Meliah Rage, Grim Reaper, Ozzy, and Exodus -so- can I enjoy their "power ballads", which, when you think "metal"...they don't really sound like at all.

Lastly - what if you heard & loved a (in this case) *Metal* song before it had any Lyrics?!

You would then:

A).  Still like the song as long as the lyrics were non-religious, and

B).  Stop liking/no longer enjoy the song should its lyrics mention/reference any religion at all?!

tl;dr = I think that it should be pretty simple to separate and enjoy both a song's musicality and/or lyrics...Together and/or independently of each other :)
Title: Re: Gamer Metalheads

I don't mind Christian Metal. Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, and Times of Grace all have very Christian-influenced lyrics and are fantastic bands (well, except for All That Remains latest album which is decidedly softer than the rest).

But then, I'm a rare breed, I'm a proud Christian, and a proud metal-head. And I seem to get crap for it on both sides of the fence. Christians try to tell me it's satanic, while at the same time many metal-heads really have a hatred for religion in general.

I do steer clear of overtly anti-God or anti-Christian bands like Cradle of Filth or God Dethroned, though. Because I just don't feel right listening to lyrics like "Another Christ hunt, a broken crucifix, with blood of Christ I quench my thirst." Makes me feel a little guilty as Christian.

No love for the hair metal, I see. That's a shame. Some great stuff in there that just gets passed by so many metal-heads because it's all labeled as "cheesy". Clothing styles and hair styles aside, there's some good tunes in hair metal.

Oh, and I should have had God Forbid on that list. Constitution of Treason is such a good album.

I will not lie, I heard metal bands and have rejected them.

Where is the music, then? Another band that I've also heard is Megadeth. I thought it was different, but I was wrong. Year 200X is a metal band that does nothing but covers NES chip tunes and makes them into awesome metal themes. Check them out. The Mega Man 2/Mega Man 3 theme is my favorite by them.

I've recently been trying to get into Pantera because someone kept telling me he really enjoyed them.

So I bought Vulgar Display of Power and it probably took me like 10 listens to actually start liking it. Not sure what it was about it, but it really didn't click with me for a while. But after repeated listens I sort of "got" it. I think I'll look into more of their albums see if there's anymore songs I'll like in there.

One of my favorites in the album:

The only song from them I previously knew was this little gem:

Love me some Pantera!

Dimebag Darrell (may he R.I.P. next to Rhandy Rhoads) was a phenomenal guitarist.

Cowboys from Hell is actually my favorite -with- Cemetary-Gates being one of those songs that I could never hear too many times...or...ever hear w/o being compelled to sing-along with it (much like Danzig's Mother)...talk about an "Anthem from high school"  8)

Also - I saw Pantera live (for Cowboys from Hell), iirc, they were touring with: Suicidal Tendencies, Body Count, Exodus, and I *think* House of Pain (if they were the band that did "Jump Around").

All in all, an awesome time for us attendees - not so much for those working security, though, I'd imagine  :o

Anyone here use Last.FM?

It's an online radio station that you can pick and choose what you want to play on it, yourself. There's also a recommendations station you can listen to, tailor-suited to your tastes, or you can mix your personal station with the recommedations station. Or if you're in the mood for a particular band's style, you can listen to their radio station which will also play other bands similar to that particular band.

Whenever I'm online I have a window open with it on. It's a great way to discover new bands. I've discovered a bunch of new bands through them.

Check it out. You've got nothing to lose, it's completely free.

Here's my personal listening library, at the moment:

I used to use Pandora, but I switched to Last.FM a while ago.  What I liked better about it is how specific you can get on what you want to listen to.  Lately I have been listening to a lot of doom metal, on Pandora there is one station: Doom Metal Radio.
On Last.FM I can choose:
Traditional Doom
Death-Doom
Gothic Doom
Epic Doom
Blackened Doom
Atmospheric Doom
Sludge Doom
etc.
Or I can just choose doom and get a combination of all of these!

Same here. Pandora is too restricting compared to Last.Fm since it chooses for you. And it doesn't always choose right.

Sorry for butting in, but is anyone here a fan of Motorhead? I got a couple of sealed concert films in during today's store purchases and wanted to ask if anyone wanted first dibs on these.

The World is Ours Vol. 1 (Bluray, apparently region free)

If not, they'll go up on eBay.

Yeah I am not a huge fan of those either, although I have not heard much of it.  My favorites are traditional, death-doom, and gothic doom.  I like to listen to some Sunn 0))) Drone every once in a while, but you definitely have to be in the right mood to listen to that stuff. What I love about Doom metal is all the different types there is.  I have been listening to the genre for about a year and if I get tired of Saint Vitus, Trouble, and Candlemass I can go to My Dying Bride, Anathema and Katatonia.

Do you have any good bands to try?

I picked up Amon Amarth: Deceiver of the Gods at Best Buy, ordered a couple online, the rest I got in a trade for a couple graphic novels.

Deceiver of the Gods is the best album I've heard this year!

Some good stuff in there!

If anyone hasn't ever heard of them (and you want to hear some good -but- lesser-known 80's metal bands), check-out:

Laaz Rockit,

Meliah Rage,

Sacred Reich, and/or

Grim Reaper  ;)

I got more metal CDs!
Is Testament Souls of Black good?  I almost picked it up the other day, but most people consider it to be their worst CD.

I'll let you know when I get a chance to really listen through it. I have a bit to listen to ahead of me.

I listened to a little of it while I was ripping it to my Media Player. I liked what I heard. It sounded reminiscent of Kill 'Em All Metallica.

Blackened Doom isn't bad.  Sludge Doom is ok, depends on what mood I'm in.

I like drone like Sunn O))) too.  I also have to be in the mood for it as well.  :P

I highly recommend Thou.  There's also Black Cobra, Kowloon Walled City, High On Fire (these being more on the punk end of sludge doom) and Dark Castle.

Just heard 1 of my favorite songs ("Turn the Page")!

So, my fellow metal-heads...which is better

A.  The Bob Seger version or

B.  the Metallica one?

Heavier doesn't *ALWAYS* = better; does it?!

Metallica are the kings of covers. They out do Seger on that song, without a doubt. They also out do Thin Lizzy on Whiskey In the Jar, and their version of Astronomy is even better than Blue Oyster Cult's.

There aren't many bands out there that can do a cover and not butcher it, too. So I think that's damn impressive.

Gamma Ray are also pretty good with their covers. Here's a few fun ones.

Long Live Rock n' Roll (originally by Rainbow (Dio!))

Gamma Ray (originally by Birth Control)... I actually had NO idea this was a cover :P

Exciter (I don't need to say who originally made this, right?)

I am a HUGE fan of Iron Maiden. But still, I think Cradle of Filth's cover of "Hallowed By They Name" is better than the original:

Speaking of Maiden...where do the rest of you stand on D'ianno vs. Dickinson?

Also, I just learned a new, weird, and kinda' disturbing bit of trivia...

Guns 'n' Roses did a cover of a *Charles Manson* song  :o

It's apparently a 'hidden' track # 13 on "The Spaghetti Incident" - now, just out of curiosity, I'm gonna be going to see wtf *that* shit sounds like...

Anybody else here already know that/heard the song?

Oh sure. The song's fine. Its what you would expect from 60s folksie music from San Francisco. Manson did a couple albums IIRC. I recall back in the 90s watching 60 minutes (or was it 20/20) where they have a trivia question at the end of the show. They said "who played this song" and they played the original version of that song, not the GNR version. And I shout out "CHARLES MANSON!" and the g-parents are like "NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY" and we have some little argument about how Charles Manson is a bad person, blah blah blah. After the commercial break, the TV said it was Charles Manson. :)

What about Blaze? No love for him?

Dickinson, for me, even if we're counting Blaze. But I think Blaze sounds better than D'ianno, still. I just can't get into his stuff. He's sounds amateur to me.

Maiden is my all time favorite act.  Can't really say Cradle of Filth did that song any favors though.  Also I going to agree with doom on this one.  Why does everyone crap on Bayley?  X Factor and Virtual XI are great albums.

Also I didn't realize Amon Amarth had a new album.   Although it sounds of a completely different beast compared to their usual.

On a much lighter note (pun intended:)

I'm gonna' list another of my favorite covers as Tesla's re-make of Signs.

Anyone else count Metallica's 4 Horseman as a re-make of Dave Mustaine's Mechanix  :o

Personally, while I think Kirk's a hella talented guitarist, I like/think Mustaine is better.

Then again, *NONE* of 'em will EVAR live-up (to me, at least) to my ALL-TIME Personal Favorite...

Who are the rest of your all-time favorite:

Guitarists,

Singers,

Drummers,

Keyboard (or any other instrument) players,

      (Ballads/Power-Ballads),

Albums, and/or

For those of you who like the song - check-out the song "The Ballad" on their 1st album "Practice What You Preach" :)

The whole album, I think, is pretty damned good, Alex Skolnik (as always) shreds on the guitar -and- I think that now I'll have to go dust-off my CD of it, and give it a listen.

Yeah; too lazy to get the link -but- trust me, if you like the Legacy - it's worth tracking it down & giving it a listen...

I'm not/never was geeky in the least...tbqh...more of a "burn-out", "class clown", "tough guy", long-haired, heavy metal musician type (guitar - B4 I lost the hand).

I think that gamers (as a whole) get a bad rep (by default) of being geeks...most of the gamers I'm friends w/ irl *definitely* wouldn't be seen/considered as "geeks", either  ;)

"Geek" is nothing to be ashamed of. I wear the title proudly. I'm into comic books, video games, sci-fi and horror movies, and pro-wrestling. That definitely makes me a geek. And I have more fun than all the so-called "adults" around me my age. I also seem to be happier, less stressed out person than most other people my age because I don't hide my inner-child.

I was just saying that I'm tired of seeing & hearing "gamer" & "geek" used synonomously & inter-changeably - like they very often are.

Personally (and, like I said - just about all of the gamers that I'm friends with/know irl) really only have *Gaming* on our lists of 'Likes' that come from the list of hobbies/pleasures/interests that would fall under the "Geeky" umbrella...

I know there's a lot of disdain out there in the metal community towards hair metal bands. But I ask you to push those misconceptions aside, and give this album a real chance.

W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol

I've recently been turned on to it, and it's just an incredibly album. One of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever heard. It's an amazing concept album with simply epic, and memorable tunes (with some beautiful guitar-work) throughout it as it tells the story of the rise and fall of an imaginary rock star. The description on YouTube can do a better job at explaining it:

Quote from: YouTube
The Crimson Idol was the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band W.A.S.P., originally released by Capitol Records in 1992 (1993 in the United States). The album is a concept album, telling the story of the rise and fall of a fictional rock star named Jonathan Steel.

The album took nearly three years to complete, and was originally recorded as a Blackie Lawless solo album, but Lawless bowed to fan pressure and released it under the W.A.S.P. moniker.

Listen to it, you'll thank me:

If not the whole album, at least check out these two tunes:

The opening song to album, "The Titanic Overture", an opening track that just grabs you and the rest of the album never lets go:

And the amazingly haunting rock ballad, "The Idol", is a treat for you ears, and heaven for a guitar-lover:

But this album transcends your normal party-lyric hair metal album.

Try their first album, if that's what you want. They sound like a completely different band. Melodic Death Metal. Avenged Sevenfold TOTALLY sold out to get on the radio.

I have it.  I got into them around the Sounding the Seventh Trumpet album.  I like the heavy stuff, but I like the radio stuff too.  I think (my opinion) the self titled album is one of few albums that is good front to back.  For me, it's up there with The Black Album and Appetite for Destruction.  Gates' lead breaks are amazing.
I'm a fan though.  My opinion is skewed.

I would definitely choose games over CDs.  There was a time in my life where music was more important than video games, and I would have chosen the opposite.  I have quite a music collection amassed, but I care more for my video game collection.  Maybe that's just how it is when you get older.  ...Or something.  :P

I grabbed the new Avenged Sevenfold album today.  It's good stuff.  Track 1 is very Metallica-esque and #3 is very GnR.  I like it so far.  It's more heavy and not as radio friendly as the last 2 albums.

Try their first album, if that's what you want. They sound like a completely different band. Melodic Death Metal. Avenged Sevenfold TOTALLY sold out to get on the radio.

Reminds me of Underoath. Their old stuff is awesome, new stuff... meh.

I'm just the opposite of you guys. I've focused mainly on video games for quite a while now, and I'm shifting more towards music again, lately. When I was a teenager, it was totally more about the music. But this time around, it's not that I'm completely enamored by music (though I do I love my metal still), it's just that I have a crapload of video games now, and not nearly enough music that I want.

And right now, these are the top 20 albums I'm wanting:

1.   Scar Symmetry - Symmetric in Design
2.   In Flames - Reroute to Remain
3.   In Flames - A Sense of Purpose
4.   Deathstars - Termination Bliss
5.   W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol
6.   W.A.S.P. - The Last Command
7.   W.A.S.P.  (Self-Titled)
8.   Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
9.   Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
10.   Children of Bodom - Blooddrunk
11.   Amorphis - Circle
12.   Dark Tranquility - Fiction
13.   Iced Earth - Glorious Burden
14.   Iced Earth - Dystopia
15.   Wintersun (Self-Titled)
16.   Fear Factory - Archetype
17.   Nightwish - Imaginarium
18.   Megadeth - Rust In Peace
19.   Megadeth - Cryptic Writings
20.   Metallica - Garage Inc.

Nice! Love the classic stuff. My favorites out of those would be Ratt (saw them twice!), Motley Crue, Rainbow (Metal is Dio!), and Scorpions.

I saw Dio once before he left us. Unfortunately it was with Heaven & Hell, a period of Black Sabbath I am totally unfamiliar with. I'm still trying to find that other Rainbow album that has "All Night Long" on it. No luck yet.

I was at Wal-Mart today buying stuff for the baby and the car.  I decided to see what music they still had.  Not much is what comes to mind.  I did however find Amon Amarths Deceiver of the Gods sandwiched between a couple of Jason Aldean CDs.  For $9 I liberated it from that hellish prison.

I'm diggin it.   8)

Holy crap! All my Wal-Mart has is the couple dozen or so classic rock albums you see everywhere in the $5 bins, and a whole bunch of country crap I'd never listen to. I'm lucky to even see a Metallica album.

Your Wal-Mart is freaking awesome if they have Amon Amarth!

However, I'd take a close look at that. I don't know if they still do, but back in the day Wal-Mart took it upon themselves to edit album covers and they only released edited versions of albums back in the day. (My Rob Zombie: Hellbilly Deluxe was edited and had the "X" I his forehead removed from the cover art.) I'd hate to have an edited version of Amon Amarth of all bands.

They usually carry a small variety of that kind of music.  There were only two copies at the store.  Also spotted Anthrax, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Korn, Slipknot, Lamb of God.  A lot of them heavily edited though.   Come to think of it that same Wal-Mart is where I purchased Within Temptations, Heart of Everything.

They carry A LOT of Metallica, Megadeth, and Judas Priest.  Can't find an Iron Maiden album to save my dying ass though :(

That's awesome! The ONLY place to get decent CDs around here anymore is Best Buy. And that's only if the album is fairly recent. Like they have the new Children of Bodom, new Amon Amarth, and new Megadeth. But they don't have the older albums. Unfortunately, they reduced the CD section, A LOT. You might get lucky at Goodwill, too.

They shut down our music shop in the mall (F.Y.E.) and Circuit City shut down (which had a fantastic selection of CDs at a great price).

So I order most of my CDs off of eBay anymore.

Me too.  We had an F.Y.E. at the mall in Springfield but that went under years ago.  Luckily there is a CD Warehouse on the same stretch of road.  They have quite a bit of older stuff, decent prices too.

Just picked up two Saint Vitus CDs there, Children of Doom and Die Healing.

Nope. A buddy mine that moved to Washington told me he had one of those stores in his area too, I'm jealous. I do often order many of CDs on eBay from an eBay Store called gohastings, I wonder if they're connected.

For the Metallica fans out there:

What is your favorite Metallica instrumental song?

-(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth (Kill 'Em All)
-Call of the Ktulu (Ride the Lightning)
-Orion (Master of Puppets)
-To Live Is To Die (...And Justice For All)
-Ecstasy of Gold (S & M)

Orion from Master of Puppets is my favorite. Such freaking awesome riffs and solos through-out that masterpiece of a song!

But all of them are fan-freaking-tastic! \m/

Death

Summoning (Atmospheric Black Metal)

Agalloch (Atmospheric Black Metal)

Nothing wrong with that choice. Fantastic song!

I am so freaking infatuated with this band:

I just can't get enough of them. I have the first 3 albums with Christian Alvestem as the lead singer, and they are metal perfected. The last couple of albums, after the first lead-singer left, not so much though. They just aren't the same band anymore.

But I'm posting this to see if anyone that is familiar with the band, can give me some other suggestions on similar stuff. I've listened the hell out of the first 3 albums and I want more, and those last 2 albums aren't cutting the mustard.

So if anyone can give some great suggestions similar to Scar Symmetry, it would be much appreciated.  :)

Quick question.  Does anybody know anything about a band named Noumena.  A Melodic Death Metal band from Finland.  I have been trying to get a hold of their album Absence.  Needless to say it isn't going well.

Here's song to pass along to see if anybody else may be interested in them.

I did actually.  Have yet to get a reply.  I have been doing some digging around since then though and it comes to find out. It's out of print, since their contract through Spinefarm Records ended.  The only copy I seen was on Ebay for $250ish.

They actually created their own label (Haunted Zoo Production) and if all goes well with their newest album Death Walks With Me they will re-release their other albums.  Here's to hoping.

If its an old label, you might be able to get it through the band, their manager, or even the old label. If it was a current label, I would not advise going to the band first.

I got to see my favorite band in concert this weekend. A7X!
Avenged Sevenfold
Deftones
and Ghost

Avenged put on an awesome show with a badass stage. Check it out on YouTube. They mixed some new with the old. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I think that is the 10th time seen them.
Chino was noticeable F'd up but still put on a pretty good show. The crowd wasn't super into it, but it was fun.
Ghost. What can I say. They sound good musically. They have a stage presence. It was the creepiest shit I've ever seen. I've seen Rob Zombie, would love to see Manson; but this shit creeped me out. I think the rest of the crowd was a little put off too.  Their equipment messed up during the last song and the crowd cheered.

I have CDs and records too but I enjoy listening to tapes at home. Records not so much because they are too annoying. Keep having to get up to flip it over or deal with it skipping. CDs I just listen to in the car.

Fantastic cover of a fantastic Pink Floyd song by a fantastic band. Instead of Tarja singing, this one is sung by Marco. He has a great voice, I wish he'd do a little more vocals in the band than he does.

Years back when Napster and Limewire were all the rage, I sold a lot of my music collection to fund my game collection, thinking I could just download all those albums.

Well, here I am years later, feeling nostalgic about those albums, and wanting a real music collection again. So I've been building up my collection a bit lately, focusing more on music than I was on video games.

My collection isn't nearly what it was before I sold my albums, but it's getting there. And I'm getting a lot that I never had to begin with. Thought I'd share where I'm at. Here's a few pics of it. I'm a bit over a 100 albums.

A few notes:
-You don't see many albums in these pics, because a number of them I acquired in a cheapie bulk buy, and some of those didn't have their original cases, so all of those ones are hanging out together on a CD spindle.

-The tapes that have handwritten labels are real tapes, but I lost the artwork somehow over the years.

-Finally, sorry about the photo quality. I'm not a photographer by any means.

I recently found a Deicide and an Asphyx CDs at Goodwill.

So, let's talk about...Nu-Metal.

This is a very divisive sub-genre in the metal community. Some metal-heads swear by it. Many more hate it with a passion. And some get pissed it's even considered a sub-genre since it's so loosely defined.

Personally, I've always felt Nu-Metal refers to a distinct hip-hop influenced style of metal. Bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, and Linkin Park. But I've talked to enough people to know that's not the case in many people's minds. A lot of people just lump most mid-to-late 90s to early 2000s mainstream metal bands into the Nu-Metal category.

I personally don't like most of the hip-hop influenced bands. I've never been into hip-hop or rap. However, I do like a number of the other bands that are often labeled as Nu-Metal, even if the moniker doesn't exactly fit.

Here's some that I've enjoyed:
-Chevelle
-Coal Chamber (I haven't actually heard them in years, though)
-Deftones
-Disturbed
-Mudvayne
-The Murderdolls (Another one I haven't heard in years)
-Sevendust
-Slipknot
-Tool

So how do you feel about Nu-Metal? Like it? Hate it?
Title: Re: Gamer Metalheads

The only band I've ever heard referred to as Nu-Metal is Korn. Kind of like the only Industrial Metal band is NIN.
I love that kind of music. Korn is one of my favorite bands of all time. Most of the bands on that list are badass. I remember the name Coal Chamber, but couldn't tell you one song they sing. Same with Murderdolls.

On a side note: A couple of years ago in Las Vegas, my wife and I did shots of moonshine with Sevendust. The singer that looks all jacked and muscled up is a really short dude.

I like tool, A perfect Circle, Deftones, and Drowning Pool Also, I'll occasionally listen to slipknot & Rage against the Machine, but that's as far as I'll go with Nu Metal. there are bands I see in list of nu metal bands that I don't think belong wether I like them or not (ex. linkin park, Incubus), and then there are the bands I hate (hollywood undead, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down). Personally it's just another Metal genre, however since there are so few I actually like I tend to put those with my Alternative Metal music

Linkin Park's first two albums have a special place in my heart since it helped spark my interest in Metal music.  Other than that though I have not been able to get into much Nu Metal music, especially songs with a lot of rap. I do enjoy a few bands like Disturbed though.  That could always change though as there was a time when I found Turn Loose the Swans to be a boring album, but it is now my favorite album and Doom metal has become my favorite subgenre over the past year.
That's the beauty of Metal, there is a subgenre for everyone.

Other bands like Tool and Disturbed are definitely questionable. But Linkin Park isn't; they most definitely have a rap influence in their music. No doubt about them, they're nu-metal.

I guess I Should re-word that a little Linnkin Park never struck me as "metal", Rock yes but not Metal. Then again I never really cared enough for Linkin Park to listen to anything outside of what you heard on the Radio.

Oh, okay, I see. I guess I can agree with that. But they sure pulled the wool over a lot people's eyes with their first album. I remember seeing commercials on MTV and VH1 for that album, and it showed "One Step Closer" which is a bit harder than their normal style.

I went out and bought the album based on that commercial, and was severely disappointed.

Linkin Park's been my favourite band since I've had a favourite band. I like nu metal a lot, I would say it as my favourite metal genre. However, I'm very open minded when it comes to metal. I like stoner metal, doom metal, black metal, death metal, industrial metal, thrash metal, groove metal, power metal, NWOBHM, funk metal, glam metal, progressive metal, speed metal, and grunge (if that counts).

I should probably say Sabbath, since they started it all; but I really think Metallica is the best. They might not be anyone else's favorite, but they have been relevant for 30+ years.  People my parents age all the way down to teenagers know who Metallica is.

I've been listening to them for a long time, and I know I'll probably get flamed for this by any other longtime Amon Amarth fans here, but...I think Deceiver of the Gods is a serious contender for Amon Amarth's greatest album. The entire thing is just fantastic to listen to from beginning to end.

Being a big metalhead myself, I have to toss in Demolition Racer: No Exit for the metal list.  I think some of the Twisted Metal series had dominantly "metal" tracks as well.

Aside from the list, I tend to gravitate toward the slow and heavy stuff. I only really care for Black Sabbath's earlier stuff like their "Paranoid" album. I absolutely recommend Pentagram to anyone who enjoys Sabbath, but New Orlean's Thou is my absolute favorite sludge/doom band. I used to be really into grindcore, but I only really pull Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed off the shelves these days. I like some Crust Punk, but it tends to end up sounding the same after a while.

Here's my usual playlist:

Black Cobra (Hardcore-influenced Sludge)
This Runs On Blood (weirdest Hardcore I have ever heard)
Thou (heaviest band in recent years)
EyeHateGod (Sludge masters)
Whores. (these guys are great)
Kowloon Walled City (Sludge and damned good)
SubRosa (Experimental Doom w/ violins)
Batillus (NY Sludge Doom)
Pig Destroyer (Thrashy Grindcore)
Agoraphobic Nosebleed (a Grindcore Drum Machinegun and weird as hell)
Fister (Saint Louis Doom Face-wreckers)
Mammoth Grinder (a strange mix of Grindcore, Hardcore, Sludge, D-beat.... all awesome)
High On Fire (Celtic Frost-tinged Sludge)
The Haunted (Post-Thrash w/ a Death Metal edge)
At The Gates (Death Metal)
The Faceless (Tech Death)
Dismember (Death Metal)

I'll admit that I have a huge soft spot for Radiohead.

YEAH. I SAID IT.

So...anyone else here like/listen to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra?

After listening to some of their music - I not only found that I really liked it, but also that, I was really impressed by the guitar work + the tone & theme to much of their music actually sounded familiar to me & reminded me of something...

After a little info-digging...I now understand why  8)

I used to listen to a lot of Savatage (w/ "Gutter Ballet" being one of my favs) - it, also had a similar 'rock opera' / 'orchestral metal' type of feel (this was back in the late 80's, no less)!

Also, way back when, I was a pretty big fan of Testament, and, playing guitar myself at the time - I was easily able to recognize that their guitarist (Alex Skolnik) stood head & shoulders above many of the "Hey, I've got long hair, a guitar, and know a few power chords"/dime-a-dozen metal "guitarists" of the time.

TL;DR:

Turns out that the guy who started/runs TSO was involved with (the publisher, iirc) Savatage's album Gutter Ballet.

Another founding/key person in TSO *IS* the guitarist from Savatage.

Another of TSO's 'regular' guitarists name is...wait for it...

...Alex Skolnik  ;)

If anyone is interested it is Metal Month (http://www.gohastings.com/catalog/section.jsp?departmentName=POD&podName=Metalmonth&from=staticmusic1&utm_nooverride=1) at goHastings right now.  Their definition of metal is quite broad (I saw a few Police albums in there!), but the prices are good.  I have not looked through it all yet, but I did see a few of deals here:
Arise (http://www.gohastings.com/product/POPMUSIC/Arise/sku/32923440.uts) Awesome band, well at least this album and the one before that Beneath the Remains.  Highly recommend if you enjoy a touch of death metal in your thrash metal.
Black Sabbath (http://www.gohastings.com/product/POPMUSIC/Black-Sabbath/sku/32822645.uts)  The start of DooOOOooOOom metal, my second favorite Sabbath album behind Paranoid.
Turn Loose the Swans (http://www.gohastings.com/product/POPMUSIC/Turn-Loose-the-Swans/sku/292764700.uts)  I'll probably pick this one up since it has the bonus commentary on the second disc and it is my favorite album.

I think we have a lot of bands in common:

My new guitar! The Viper. Looked cool and it was cheap. Got an amp with it, too. I'm excited to learn how to play now!

I also picked up Rocksmith for XBox 360. Seemed like a fun way to learn the basics and track my progression.

As my avatar shows, I'm very much a metalhead.  One of my favorite games of this past generation was Brutal Legend, to the point that I now have a cosplay of Eddie Riggs to wear! lol As for the style of metal I'm into, it's abit all over the place, though I'd probably say Heavy, Thrash, and Power are my bread and butter.  Maiden, Priest, Megadeth, Annihilator, Iced Earth, Symphony X, etc.  From that stuff gets abit more particular such as melodic death metal like November's Doom or Amon Amarth, the doom metal, etc.  Some progressive stuff is mixed in, whatever genre Devin Townsend might be dabbling in at the time, and it can include more novelty stuff like Babymetal that is surprisingly fun to me and I don't care if others say that removes my "metal card" lol

I do play a little guitar, nothing impressive, just riff stuff I've learned since highschool, some Megadeth, Metallica, I can play a little Iron Maiden, Ozzy, I don't play with a band, just sorta do it as a way to past the time these days.  My guitar is a Faded Gibson SG I got around 2003, though it's seen better days and kinda needs an overhaul with fine tuning the gear as even tuning it, it never really sounds like it use from lack of some proper regular cleaning and upkeep.

BTW, is this particular page (no others on the site) annoyingly laggy and taking far too long to load for anyone else? I thought it might have been from too many YouTube videos being posted on it, so I deleted a few of my posts containing them, and it didn't seem to help.

Not diehard. I'm not a diehard to any music genre, gotta spread that love around. As far as metal, progressive metal is where I'm at, and some of it's offshoots as well. Used to be into "tech death" but haven't followed that genre in a while.

Dang, Nightwish can't keep a singer for the life of them!

This news a little old now, but new to me. Apparantly Annette Olzen has left the band due to "creative differences". If any Nightwish fans recall, that was the official reason they gave for the original singer's departure (Tarja). But if you also recall, there was obviously some bad blood that could be read in-between the lines. (Heck, just listen to the song "Bye, Bye Beautiful" on their 1st album with Annette, he straight lets all his anger out for Tarja in that song.) Seems from all reports, the same situation is happening between them and Annette again. Why can't Nightwish play well with others?

The new singer is Floor Jansen (how do you end up with a name like "Floor"?). She had previously temporarily replaced Annette on tour when she fell ill.

Which the band is reportedly very happy with. But then, they also expressed how happy they were with Annette. This news was a surprise to me.

If it's a band I like, I tend to listen to everything I can by the time the album releases lol Once in awhile I'll go into an album mostly fresh if they are someone newer and I like maybe the single.  Rarely do I go into something unknown unless I'm given something which isn't often.

I was also surprised by the fact that they had changed singers AGAIN. But, I like Floor's voice and it seems like she is able to sing all their old stuff too. My kids love Nightwish. In the car they ask, "Dad, can we listen to the viking songs?" Love it.

I thought it was kind of a...best of album, with all new songs.  You have old rock stuff like they use to do, more standard heavy metal from the likes of British Steel, and then stuff kinda more like Painkiller.  Overall a solid album and certainly way more listenable than Nostrodamus which only had a good song or two.  The only songs I don't like on the album that I feel are almost unlistenable are Bring it On and Hell & Back.  The lyrics are such a level of cheese, I just can't handle them lol

I thought that it was kind of...a cookie cutter song for the concept, lyrics, subject matter, etc.

Then again, I've always liked the songs that tended more towards power ballads anyway.

I thought it was okay.  There's nothing by them I love album wise, but they have a few good songs here and there.  When they get heavier or faster, or Lizzy really goes all out, I think that's their best, but they do alot of just kinda boring rock stuff.  She has a fantastic voice though.  They also do good covers.  I mean, what modern band is choosing Dissident Aggressor as their Priest cover? lol

I've noticed a lot of these music threads in video game forums and it seems 9 times out of 10 it's heavy rock or metal that people like. Although I like rock (grew up in the 80's) but doesn't anyone like any lighter music? Country? Maybe it's because I'm almost 45 but I prefer soft rock or some pop, country. NEVER metal. I hear that stuff at work (I'm in construction). Sometimes I'll go on youtube and play some of that relaxation music with nature sounds, stuff like that. I need music to be calming at my age.

Don't get me wrong, I like rock but it has to be singing - not screaming or guttural grunting - and some kind of melody and not just two or three power chords. Halestorm was mentioned and I actually like some of their stuff - when she sings and doesn't scream. She's got a great voice and when she uses it in songs like "Familiar Taste of Poison", she really shines.

I looked up some videos of this "In this Moment" - Nope, that's definitely not for me. Way too weird and over the top for me.

I like certain things that can be classified as metal, but mostly progressive. As with any music I'm attracted to, I tend to like metal with "more brains than balls". So most metal doesn't particularly wow me. The most metal bands I'm still actively into are Protest The Hero, and Between The Burried and Me, and I guess you could also say Last Chance To Reason, The Contortionist, and Cynic which I'm more a fan of the newer Cynic, and I need to check out the latest album because what I've heard sounded great, although not very metal at all.

I'm a bit out of touch with the more recent Prog Metal scene, if anyone wants to recommend a band based on those I've mentioned.

Hammet's a good guitar player, but he's lucky to be part of a band the caliber of Metallica.  He's not a great guitarist in a great band.

Let's be honest, Metallica is the better band on every level... except Hammet.

I dont know why but I really like ...And Justice For All and St. Anger they are some of my favorite records of all time. Why do people always shun them?

Personally, I don't dislike And Justice For All...it's actually the last Metallica album that I liked.

IMO, it was their 1st album that I didn't like *everything* on, though.

In the cases of Kill em All, Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning - I liked every single track on them...I could just let any one of those albums play & replay, over and over again, w/o ever wanting to skip to the next song.  And Justice For All was the 1st album with any songs that I thought were "skip-able".

I thought that "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" was decent, I liked "Blackened", really liked "One", and *Love* "Dyer's Eve".

But, "...And Justice For All, Eye of the Beholder, The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow, & To Live Is to Die", were all, IMO (while I wouldn't call them "bad" songs), they just didn't live up to the precedent that they'd set by releasing 3 consecutive albums w/o any songs that I could...take or leave.

Also, iirc, like half of the songs were...what - something like 7 to10 minutes each?

IMO, these much longer (Iron Maiden-ish) "epic" length songs weren't well-suited for this band (or, maybe it was more of a case of the band not being well-suited to those types of songs).

Honestly, though - having been a fan of Metallica from the start (Shit, I remember me + a bunch of friends walking out of school in shock and disbelief the day we heard that Cliff Burton died --and-- how almost 1/4 of the school didn't show up to school the next day either because we were all together doing...'stuff' and 'things' as a memorial to him), AND I still remember a lot of the things that the band *originally* stood for (those same things that resonated with us teen-agers and that drew us in, as fans) and, more importantly, the things that they *SAID* back then...such as "We'll never make any song that'd ever be played on the radio, we're all in it strictly for the love of our fans + all of our love of creating & performing our music live for them, and, you will certainly NEVER see a video of a Metallica song on MTV or ever see US using one of those fucking orchestras...like all of these more sell-out types of bands have been flocking to these days just because it's the "thing to do"...It's all of these things that we don't do, don't care about or pay attention to, and that we'd never do that are at the very heart of what it means be Metallica".

So, (with and) after AND Justice For All, came (the very radio-friendly; almost pop/top 40-ish) "Enter Sandman", bunches of videos, more & more radio play, "those fucking orchestras", the whole "Napster" thing (stinking of greed, corporate, and "Forgot where we came from + what we used to be & mean")...which, inevitably, led to lots of pissed of & disillusioned (EX)Fans of what Metallica used to be, like myself  >:(

Who shuns And Justice For All?

St. Anger, I shun, however. That's because the song writing is incredibly repetitive, and it sounds like it was recorded with a Fisher-Price recorder. Oh and did Lars trade-in his drum-kit for tin cans on that album, or what? I bought the album, and literally tossed out the window after about a week of trying to give it a try.

And to answer my original question:

Back in the day, Metallica. Nowadays, without a shadow of a doubt, it's Megadeth. Megadeth is still putting out stellar albums, touring, and even putting on Gigantour.

Metallica, well, they made St. Anger and Lulu...not really a competition anymore. Megadeth is blowing them out of the water.

Its probably just me that likes the WHOLESt. Anger album. After all it was the first Metallica album I had and heard any of there material from. Albums like Master of Puppets and Ride the Lighting are GREAT in there own respect just WAYY over played.

Who shuns And Justice For All?

"Call of the Ktulu", "Trapped Under Ice", "For Whom the Bells Toll", and "Orion", "Sanitarium"; just a few reason why it's overplayed. Because their metal masterpieces.

Where do you stand?

Megadeth for me as my picture shows.  The first four Metallica albums are great, but their earliest albums have Mustaine all over the first two and I think Mustaine is the better songwriter over all and were more consistent with releasing good stuff over the years, despite their own missteps, but at least they didn't take years off making music like Metallica did lol  Not that they are perfect, they've had some off albums, even recently with Super Collider as it's the first time I've been disappointed by a Megadeth album since Risk, the first album I listened to by them and almost kept me from listening to them lol

I dont know why but I really like ...And Justice For All and St. Anger they are some of my favorite records of all time. Why do people always shun them?

I don't think I've ever seen anyone shun Justice at all.  It's a very solid album and was their last real heavy release once Black came out, it's just not quite up there with the first three.  St. Anger is rightly deserving of the shunning it gets.  It's fine if you like it, I actually kinda like aspects of a couple songs, but to me, it was a huge step back in writing, production, and musicianship for them.  Death Magnetic got better, but it has editing issues with stuff dragging on too long and further cements that Kirk is just getting worse at guitar.  Whatever he use to be in the 80's or even the 90's, he's not anymore.  I am hopeful for the upcoming album.

While I have been listening to this album all last week, cause I like to get stuff as soon as I can, gotta support the band when you can.  Very solid album.  Probably gonna make it into my Top 5 for the year unless some shocking upsets happen.

Just discovered these guys, really liking them. Nice transitions between harsh and clean vocals:

Can't say I think I listen to much that is metalcore.  Avenged Sevenfold use to be, but that was mostly just their first album and I only like City of Evil...All That Remain might be another I guess, but I only have like one album of theirs and I feel kinda uncomfortable listening to them for obvious reasons now lol

I actually liked the Austrian Death Machine stuff more and the third album came out during that mess.  Can't support an album that was pretty much solely made by the guy :\

I don't consider myself a metalhead (probably more of a hiphop head if anything) but I've recently been listening to a ton of Mastodon and Baroness. I've been kinda looking for more stuff from that vein (stoner/sludge/prog metal I guess)... I've never been into the real heavy stuff, but every now and then I get in the mood for a good headbanging. If anyone knows of other bands that are similar I would appreciate recommendations! Hell, you can even recommend me things that aren't like them, I'm always for broadening my horizons!

I guess for referential purposes I'm just going to list all the bands I already have listed under metal on my itunes:

Anthrax
Baroness
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Destruction
Fu Manchu
Guns N' Roses
High on Fire
Iron Maiden
Lamb of God
Led Zeppelin
Mastodon
Megadeth
Melvins
Metallica
Monster Magnet
Motorhead
Nebula
Pantera
Primus
Probot
Rage Against the Machine
Sepultura
Slayer
Sodom
The Sword
Testament
Tool
Wolfmother

I will first and foremost always recommend Disturbed. Ive been into them since they launched and was the only global moderator on their forums at one time. Godsmack and Slipknot are both good listens as well as Mudvayne (their older stuff ... not much into their latest releases).

Never was a fan of Static-X myself, but always sucks to see someone in the metal world go before they should, especially since it might turn out to be drug related, something that took David Brockie of Gwar from us earlier this year.

I saw this. Crazy. The article also mentioned he was 48! I didn't realize he was so old. I'm 31, and when I was a teenager and Static-X was new, I was sure he was in his early 20s, apparently not.

I made a similar transition, I went from Thrash, Groove, and Death-Thrash to Gothic/Death/Traditional Doom.  I kind of stumbled into the Doom genre when I was looking for Death metal without gore lyrics.  What are some of your favorite bands?

Well shit...Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick just left Megadeth.  With the new album going into production in January and both basically doing it in the same day and Broderick's message talking about creative differences, my guess is that neither one was getting much input into the next album and decided to leave.

Super disappointing to see another lineup change in a band that has had many of them.  Mustaine has always been the driving force of the band, that's not surprising, but I'm curious after Super Collider, if they wanted to see more metal or even just more thrash brought back into the music and Mustaine isn't wanting that, wanting to continue what Super Collider did or even further in the direction.  That would really suck for me personally if that is what happened.  Super Collider was a big disappoint in terms of writing, with way too much rock and rather slow stuff going on.  It was feeling more of like what Cryptic Writings was before they dove into Risk, which is a terrible Megadeth album.  I was actually getting excited for the album because I heard Mustaine was sorta saying this would be a "shut up" kind of album to sorta appease the metalheads, but maybe it won't be that...Perhaps they left cause they just weren't getting any input at all, even with things going in the metal direction.

Anyways, here's one of the few songs of the past three albums that features the other band members in the writing credits, this one in particular being a big push for Drover, even from Mustaine when it was put out and I believe got them the Grammy Nomination for that year.

No big surprise to me. It's always been Dave's band, and it's always had a rotating line-up of musicians. But to his credit, that revolving line-up has always featured excellent metal musicians.

Sure, not surprising, but this had been a stable lineup for about 7 years now which is impressive in Megadeth terms.  Just when the album is coming up in a month to be worked on and both the drummer and lead guitarist leave the band over creative differences, it puts into question what the new album might be like or if Dave was simply not interested in their ideas for the album.

I'm curious if they will hurry to hire someone before the album production starts to get them on the album, or Dave goes back to what he did on The System Has Failed and gets session musicians, maybe some guest spots, for the album and then works on hiring afterwords before touring starts.

Ever thought St. Anger sounded like garbage? Of course you do, that's a fact! But apparently two musicians and a singer took it upon themselves to re-record the entire St. Anger album and released something REALLY good.  It's still not a great Metallica album, but man is it actually listenable and enjoyable with some proper production.  These guys did it on a very tight budget and limited time span and produced something far better sounding than either of Metallica's newest over-produced disasters.

I REALLY loved St.Anger. It was the first Metallica Album I owned. This "re-make" makes St. Anger makes it even better than it was originally produced!

St. Anger was just one of the worst produced albums I had listened to at the time lol I did like a song or two on it, but the god awful production kept it ruined and ruined hard.  I don't think it's a great album, especially by Metallica standards, but this re-recording makes it sound like something rather good for the most part.  I still think stuff drags too much and the lack of solo's helps add to that dragging, but I listened through that entirely and enjoyed it far better than any listen I had of the original.

^ Seriously.

Remember those toy Fisher-Price tape-recorders you could get in the 80s and early 90s? It totally sounds like they used one of those to record the album. And the drums, what's with those damn tin-can drums?

Besides the production value, I just couldn't stand the incredibly repetitive song-writing on that album. When before, you could listen to Metallica album 50 times over and still find depth and new nuances in songs you didn't notice before.

Yeah besides production, that's the problem with Metallica's songs today with St. Anger and Death Magnetic, of which I still generally liked Death Magnetic.  They make songs too long for the sake of being long.  Back in the day, they did long songs because they had great riffs and solo's to fill everything up and you were engaged the entire time with the likes of Call of Ktulu and Orion.  Kirk can't solo anymore and the riffs aren't as good, so it just gets abit boring.  It's why I'm hoping with the new album they clean themselves up in both the production and writing.

Holy shit, apparently Wayne Static of Static-X just died.

I saw this new album coming out by them, and remembered hearing about Wayne Static's death here. So I thought I'd share about the new album, here.

The new album is called Project Regeneration:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Regeneration_Vol._1

Apparently they uncovered a bunch of tracks and various songs Wayne Static had been working on and much of it has isolated voice tracks, even. So they are able to put together some full songs, and are using guest-vocalists where they can't. Sounds interesting. I'm honestly not the biggest Static-X fan (though I don't hate them, either), so I haven't heard any of it, yet. It was released this month.
