Title: Anyone have any unusual sub-collections?
Post by: blipcs76 on July 11, 2013, 04:40:30 pm
I'm curious if anyone around here collects anything bizarre or not-the-norm.  For example, I can think of 3 odd gaming-related sub-collections I'm building:

- Arcade marquees
I've got about 10 arcade marquees, which are really nice decorations for my game 'room.'

- Video game movies
Slowly, I've been collecting every video game based movie I've found on the cheap.  The worse they are, the better; awful stuff like Super Mario Bros. and House of the Dead.

- Video game board games
Only three in my collection so far (Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Zaxxon), but there weren't that many actually produced.

I still pick-up VHS and Cassette tapes at Goodwill, because their dirt cheap and I still have a working VCR and cassette player.

I tend to collect Strategy guides, but usually only for games I own. I do have a goal of getting all the Castlevania guides, but it's hard finding info on which ones had them and which ones didn't.

I also have a good selection of Video game related Action figures.

you know SMB is not all that bad of a movie, if you ignore the super mario references you will get a mediocre sci-fi with some vary cheesy dialogue.

i'm trying to collect weird some what video game related items like that space invaders LP but that thing is rare

I really want to collect Famicom handbills. I just got my first one a few weeks ago. Some are pretty expensive, so I have to take my time.

Crystalis/God slayer stuff

(IE: not much, lol)

So you have Crystalis on NES, and Crystalis on Game Boy. Is there other Crystalis stuff I'm not aware of?

There's a strategy guide, isn't there?

There are also Japanese / European versions of the games (well, the NES one).

Strategy guides were more often found in Nintendo Power or Tips and Tricks Magazine back then. I'm not sure if it had a strategy guide, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.

I could've sworn I read that this game had a standalone strategy guide but maybe I'm confusing it with something else.

I think I remember having a copy of Nintendo Power with a guide in it. But I may be mistaken, that was like...20 years ago or better haha.

This is like, a huge bump, buttt--

http://www.frankprovo.com/ZiffDavisMedia/PG/  Pocket Games issue #4 had a Crystalis GBC Mini guide - http://www.frankprovo.com/ZiffDavisMedia/PG/Crystalis/index.html

Other than the 2 CIB games and the oddball magazine article, there's nothing I've found except for

http://www.arcade-gear.com/Games/God_Slayer/God_Slayer.htm

This weird calendar-esque thing...  not even sure what to search to go about buying that, LOL

Interesting topic tho, and since I wasn't around last year... :)

I will pick up almost anything game related that I come across in the wild if the price is right, but specifically I have a small collection of brochures for consoles and a decent collection of demo disks, mainly PS2 but a few others as well.  There's probably more, I'll have to think about it some. :D

I have a relatively sizeable collection of PlayStation 1/Dreamcast magazines from the 90's and early 2000s. It's quite funny reading the articles about PS2 rumours XD

Hockey games!
Baseball games!

Collecting sports video games are what I would consider... unusual. The other things I collect are not unusual... however, I consider my video games to be a "sub-collection" in that, it is third in my priority for things I collect.

Players Guides, specifically RPG guides since they are typically very useful.

Statues and Action Figures: This is very expensive to get into lol

Soundtracks: I LOVE VIDEO GAME MUSIC! At least for official soundtracks, this can be expensive as well.

Pokemon Plushes: This is mostly one my GF works on, but we have around 50

original video game artwork: Have bought some really sweet original artwork from devientart users and at Anime Conventions.

Same, I really like collecting brochures for games. They're really fun to go back to years after you got them. I picked up a brochure for the Playstation TV to add to the collection the other day. :D I've got some old game related newspaper articles as well, though nothing particularly interesting.

my wife and i started collecting video games magazines 23 years ago. we got a ton of them. she takes more care of the old cds that mostly came with them. from Nintento mag to some obscure sega mags and the old PSmagazine. lots of demos for the ps1 came on those.
