Title: Shenmue 3!!!
Post by: theflea on June 16, 2015, 05:14:30 am
There's a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3, I was about to make a pledge til I saw it was only going to have a Physical release on PC.  :-[
They are making a PS4 digital but no physical, I will be watching this and as soon as I see a Physical Console version of any kind from maybe a stretch goal I will but my money down. They are already close to making their goal, so stretch goals I hope are next and I see a Physical Console version.  :)

Here's the link If you want to back it.

I havent pledged either and thats why. I do not support digital console kickstarters of any kind. Id love to own a copy of Shenmue 3 for the PS4 but I have to be able to hold it. :)

Make that three of us. Physical PS4, or I wait for a sale on the digital release.

Same here. I'll pledge if they get a physical PS4 version, but for now I won't bother with the Kickstarter.

Well, Sony has announced that they are helping fund and develop the game. Which makes a physical PS4 release sound much more likely, and an XBO/Wii U release highly unlikely.

Common everyone! We need to continue funding this game to make it even better than it already will be!

That is definitely one way to experience it (especially with the sharp rise in prices on the first two since 3 was announced), but I can't imagine it doing the game justice. They are absolutely amazing games, incredibly immersive, especially for the time. On top of that, it is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. I know I'm getting a little dramatic here, but I completely fell in love with both games after playing them around 13-years ago. Not having a third game has been very hard, but now we're finally going to be getting it! I'm damn proud to support something I've wanted for so long, and cannot wait to see what this game becomes :)

Oh man you weren't kidding. I was looking at the price for Shenmue on Ebay the other day, and it was about $30. Now it's $80-100! D: And Shenmue II went from around $10 to $50+! That's ridiculous. I really wanted to play it but I probably won't get around to owning it anytime soon. Luckily my college has a 3,000+ title video game archive so I can just play it there.  8)

I think the hype/overpriced situation of 1&2 wont last long.

I really do want to support the kickstarter but with just digital, I dont feel I would "gain" anything from my money other than something I have to eventually delete off my PS4.
Title: Re: Shenmue 3!!!
Post by: woahsweetgreyphix on June 18, 2015, 10:13:31 pm
Yeah I hope so. The hype and pricing may stem from the people who used to have the game and want to buy it to replay it before the new one comes out.
In any event, I still need to get all the other essential consoles first (SNES, Genesis, NES, etc.) before I get a Dreamcast, so it will probably be a while before I start seriously considering buying the game anyway.

I think more importantly you are supporting something that many thought would never happen, and a game that is being handled by one of the most innovative game developers (Yu Suzuki) of all time.

I am not one for digital either, in fact I avoid it unless it is completely free. However, supporting this game, no matter what the platform or means of distribution means more to me than anything else. I am proud to be supporting a game I've wanted more than any other for 13-years, and I think it's so cool my name will be in the credits for supporting its development. That is definitely something I could have never imagined at any point while I was paining over the real possibility that this game would never be made.

So in a way supporting Shenmue 3 and the Kickstarter is a gesture of supporting something you are passionate about more than whether it will be delivered digitally or physically, at least that is how I feel.

There is speculation that if this Kickstarter is successful enough, Sony may offer a physical release at a later date and time, possibly even as part of the Kickstarter. But this is speculation and rumor at best at this point.

Yep, as much as I like Shenmue and do think it's probably one of the greatest games ever. I want a physical copy, and not a PC one. In fact, I want Wii U copy (or maybe a Nintendo NX copy?). ;) Okay, that won't happen. But I will buy a physical copy for PS4, even though I don't intend to get a PS4.

Can anyone clarify for me that is the $60 tier & add-on the only way for Physical PS4? I have the 250 Tier but with the recent addition to physical ps4. I dont see any changes on the 250 tiers saying that we have choice of a physical ps4 copy.

They haven't updated the tier description yet, but it says in the update that you'll have the option to select the physical PS4 version if you pledge to the $60 tier or higher. They will be sending out a survey after the KS campaign to ask what version of the game you want, the same way Bloodstained did.

I am hoping given the huge success of the KS campaign so far that Sega takes notice and releases some sort of re-release of the first two on PSN or on a physical disk. I own both, but would buy any re-release of it in a heartbeat just to support the series.

I would never suggest this 99.9% of the time, but honestly if you have to emulate them. They are so worth playing and you owe it to yourself. The pacing in the beginning can be hard for some, but if you allow yourself to become immersed in the world and give the game a chance it really gives back in huge dividends. Shenmue 2 is even better than the first imo, but both are masterpieces.

Yeah, I've been considering emulation as an option because I really don't have the money/desire to buy Shenmue I and II and a Dreamcast/Xbox right now.  :-\

There is a video game archive at my University and they have Shenmue I and II, so I could play it there on an actual console if I have the time. That's where I did play about half an hour of the game and I agree with you; the game looks really interesting and immersive and I definitely want to play it.

I go to the University of Michigan, and they have a dedicated video game library of around 3400 games. You can walk in and request to play any game for any of their consoles (though you can't take it out of the library). Typically you can spend an hour playing it, but if no one is also requesting to use the system, you can play for 3ish hours.

It's amazing. I've been able to play some more expensive games like Earthbound without having to buy the games. It's open to the public too! :D

Yeah it is really cool, I remember picking up a Japanese SNES game there (I think it was Secret of Mana?). :) Great to go visit after a day of classes and play some games with like-minded people. Most of their games are by donation too; I was thinking about donating one of my games there before I graduate.

The first teaser trailer was released yesterday for Shenmue 3. While the game looks mostly good from the teaser, the most blaring issue that I had with what was shown and what everyone seems to be taking issue with is the quality of the character models. I particularly was not a fan with how Shenhua currently looks and I sincerely hope that this is a conceptual model for her and she looks closer to how she looked in the previous games. With advances in 3D modeling and graphics and because many of the original creative staff for the first two games are working on Shenmue 3, I'd love to see the ingame character models look like they did in the high end 3D models that you often see on official promotional art for the first two games. Other than that it looks, feels, and definitely has an undeniably Shenmue vibe about it. I WANT TO PLAY THIS DAMN GAME SO BAD!!!!!

Contrarily to what most people have being pointing out in the internet, I really didn't have many problems with the graphics and the design of the characters.
Nevertheless, I think this was a terrible trailer.
We are used to see teasers that try to show the best things the programmers and producers have done so far with a game (sometimes even lying to us like Ubisoft among others use to do), but if this trailer showed us the best they had to offer of Shenmue III so far, I am starting to worry about the project. I feel afraid that the game may either be delayed to sometime around 2019 (maybe even later) or (much worse) that they will rush it's development it to have it launched by the end of next year...

What do you guys think?
Title: Re: Shenmue 3!!!
Post by: bikingjahuty on August 22, 2017, 12:26:01 pm
I think the game is still very, very early on in development. If memory serves me right without going back through the KS updates, they only started actually developing the game about 6-months ago, with everything prior being planning. So for a trailer based off 6-months of development, I'm not too worried, yet.

But I am of the mind that they will not be sacrificing quality, especially seeing how Yu Suzuki is notorious for drawing out development years past initial release windows in order to deliver the best games possible. Sure, he probably does not have this luxury anymore since this game is not being funded by Sega or some other big publisher, but I'm expecting that late 2018 will be the earliest this game will see the light of day, but 2019 or even 2020 may be a possibility. The worst thing they could do is rush this game out the door in a semi-finished state; it would spell the end of the franchise for good. According to Suzuki one more game (aka Shenmue 4) would be needed to tie up the story, so this needs to succeed if we are ever to get a conclusion to this franchise.

The scenery looked real good, but yeah, the models and animation or lack-there-of was pretty bad.  It's fine though, it's still early in development, though they really should've waited to show off the characters till they were more ready.

I think it's looking good so far. With what they're given, I think they are doing a good job.

That's a bummer that they don't plan to give us a physical copy of the PS4 version though. Unless Limited Run games get's a hold of it and I bet they would. It'll sell out in an instant though, and I don't want to deal with the stress. So I hope that later on a physical PS4 release would happen.

An old post bump, but Shenmue 1 & 2 are getting HD ports to PS4, Xbox, and PC in prepartion of Shenmue 3.  Both are in a set coming out this year.  This is what I've been waiting for, as I didn't want to play the original versions.  Figured they'd end up feeling clunky and I wanted to try them out more cleaned up.  It could end up being like Resident Evil HD and I don't like the games anyways, but we'll see.  I'll give them a shot as I wanted to at least try them out before I garner any interest in Shenmue 3.

Along with updated visuals...
-Updated UI
-Modern and Classic Controls
-Japanese and English Audio

I am so incredibly happy about the Shenmue 1 + 2 HD release, especially since it is physical. Too bad the Switch isn't getting a port, but I'm totally fine with a PS4 version. I think this was necessary in order to build more hype/interest in Shenmue 3, even though I honestly don't think Shenmue 3 will be out until 2020, but we'll see.

Hm, I wonder if I should sell my copy of Shenmue then? I don't have a DreamCast yet and haven't played it yet, but I wanted a copy to hold on to

I'd hold onto it until it gets an official release date. If I've learned anything from this franchise over the years is that Sega likes to change their mind a lot in regards to it.

Shenmue 3 is now slated for a 2019 release

I was expecting this to happen within the first year of the game's development. The progress, or at least the reported progress has been slow on this game and I wouldn't be surprised if it got pushed back one more time to 2020 to be honest. As badly as I want to play this game and for it to come out I would rather they take their time and release the game we all have been waiting for rather than some rushed, subpar mess that will give crowd funded games an even worse reputation than they already have.

Weird, I don't see mine yet. I was one of the higher tier funders so maybe I'll get mine later??

I got mine only a few hours ago so maybe it's taking a while to go through the list. It said ACTION REQUIRED in the subject.

Not really related to Shenmue 3 but kind of related.

Shenmue I and II HD will be coming out in August for $29.99. I already sold my dreamcast copy (sorry Kash) as I wanted to have both games in one place. Will probably buy it day 1 :)

Me being the Shenmue crazy person I am will be buying three copies; one PS4 copy to open and play, one PS4 copy to keep sealed, and an XBONE copy...I don't even own an XBONE.

Let's pray it's for real! At least it will give me plenty of time to play through Shenmue 1 and 2.

Thank you to everyone who pitched in on the KickStarter, I've very grateful and counting down the days now!

Still re-playing Shenmue II again, but I reckon I'll make it in time :)

I would like to echo this gratitude to everyone who helped fund the Kickstarter Campaign, bought Shenmue 1 and 2 HD, and who has supported this franchise for years of false leads, cancelled plans, and general frustration leading up to the announcement of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter in 2015. I am beyond floored that this game is finally out and still in disbelief this game exists at all.

With that said I got my Kickstarter backer copies (yes, plural) last night and began playing it. Without spoiling anything they absolutely hit the nail on the head in terms of giving us an authentic Shenmue experience 18-years after the last installment. The game looks, sounds, feels, and plays just like the previous two games and I could not be happier. It should be interesting to see how modern gamers and people with no experience with the franchise think of the game, but there is no denying they gave everyone the game we'd all hoped for. I literally binged this game for 5-hours straight and all I want to do is go home and play it some more! I cannot wait!

I played it a little last night for about 40 minutes. I was very impressed as well. I noticed some framerate/optimization issues, but I'm already really loving the dynamic between Ryo and Shenhua, it feels so much more natural.

Doesn't it?! I'm about 6 in-game days into the story and possibly my favorite thing to do is come home to Shenhua and learn more about her. She is so incredibly likable, and I'm really enjoying how the story is building up her and Ryo's relationship. The occasional cheesy dialogue just adds to the charm too. I'm so happy they left the so bad it's good vice acting in this game, it's amazing lol

Been taking my time with it... spent all day playing yesterday and I have to say despite being rough around the edges I'm having a blast!

I've been doing roughly 1 story advancement per day and find that most days I have so much aditional content to explore that I'm never bored!

I was apprehensive to whether I would really enjoy playing the game but honestly I'm having so much fun!

My one gripe would be the Stanima/Health System I wish running had it's seperate bar like Blocking does in battle - As before my first encounter I was getting to the location I wanted by running planning to replenish before, but I stepped too far and triggered the scene before replenishing my health!

Beyond that I'm really digging it & it could be my GotY! Which I'm so happy to say!

No, there's a way to view the credits from the main menu.

All ok. I'll be sure to do that next time I start the game up!

I just beat Shenmue III and I can say that it's just about everything I was hoping it would be.

It is absolutely and undeniably a Shenmue game, which essentially means if you liked the previous games you are likely to like this game as well. It updates a lot while keeping the look, feel, sound, and gameplay very authentic. The only major blemish on this game was the story; it wasn't bad, but I really wish that it would have moved the overall plot along a little further and also develop various dynamics between a few of the main characters further. Despite this gripe, it did very little to diminish my enjoyment of Shenmue III and this game was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. This game was absolutely worth the 18-year wait and I really, really hope we get to see the next chapter in the Shenmue Saga, preferably not 20-years from now.

I beat it last night too and feel that overall it was a fantastic gaming experience! I found myself realy enjoying the gameplay and the mini-games to be the best in the entire franchise. Sadly I also agree with you on the narrative and felt that this offering didn't bring much to the table. I will say that the last boss encounter was everything I hoped for! :)

I feel very positive about the series continuing, it's been in the best position since the Dreamcast and I think the title has certainly made an impact.

OMFG that final battle gave me goosebumps! I was so emotionally invested in that part that I felt my heart racing lol

But yes, the story could have definitely been a bit more substantial, but I get the impression this chapter of the Shenmue saga was primarily to develop Ryo's kung fu, but I felt like it was a bit overdone. There should have been a lot more focus on character dynamics which was sorely missing imo.

I agree with you on the mini games to an extent. I really wish Sega would have allowed more of their other properties to be represented in this game like they were in the previous too. They tease you with all those Sega arcade game posters, but none of them are actually in the game! I would have flipped out if they had included a Virtua Fighter cab of some kind, or any of the previous Sega arcade games from the other two Shenmue games. Maybe this will be implemented as future DLC, but it would have made this game a little more awesome if they'd included even a few of those games. I also wish more licensed Sega characters were made into capsule toys like the previous games.

Regardless, still an amazing game and a worthy successor to the previous two Shenmue titles :)
