Title: Why Do Some Of You Have 2 Of The Same Game In Collection? Or Console Version?
Post by: oldgamerz on January 11, 2019, 08:18:05 pm
I'm guilty I do have a few duplicates in my collection. But I don't understand why even a collector would (for example), actually buy the same game on both Xbox and PlayStation. Unless it was as a gift.
(or lot). To me that sounds like a waste of money, as the same with buying a new game that is the same as another game you already own somewhere in your collection.

Some collectors like a variety of colors, and some have already stated that they own more then one PS4 to have more saved games in the future. But that is a good reason in my opinion. But for anything else more then 2 of an earlier generation console lying around. is kinda not something I would prefer, at the moment unless, it was given to me for free.

Sometimes the game is different on a different console. but most times it is the same game. Only on a different controller and console. For example I played both "Call Of Duty Finest Hour" and "Call Of Duty 2: Big Red One on both the Gamecube and PlayStation 2 and there is not a single thing different gameplay wise, just that the PS2 version on one of them has multiplayer option and the Gamecube does not.

Sometimes it may have a new feature and thrown you an extra hambone (A new feature) to be tempted to buying, but to sound like a V8 commercial you could have bought something else and it would have been a new experience.

And sadly sometimes it cost more for the same experience on the same exact game, I don't currently understand looking back.

Some games I love so much that I enjoy experiencing them on different consoles and different versions. At one point I was hoarding copies of Shenmue and Shenmue 2, but I realized how legitimately crazy it made me seem so I got rid of the extras. I do still have various ports and region releases of those games, but that's it. I do have a few games I've never played, but have several different versions of them. This is due partially to finding these games and their ports for great prices somewhere and me just not wanting to let them go, or finding out after I already bought a specific version of a game that there was a much better port on another platform.

It'll probably sound weird but because I have so many games I want to have some way of making my absolute favourites stand out amongst the others in my collection, which for me just means buying as much random shit related to them as possible. I'm never happy with the amount of memorabilia I can find for them though (sometimes I can't find any at all) so I just start buying alternate versions/platforms of the game too to appease myself. Some other times though extra copies just fall into my hands one way or another or if I start collecting for a new console and am struggling to find new games I'm interested in I'll just buy games I already have on another platform.

And then a while back my main platform of choice changed from Xbox 360 to PS3 and I don't actually like playing on my 360 anymore, feels weird. So if I decide I want to play a game I only have on Xbox 360 I might buy it on PS3 since PS3 games are dirt cheap now so I can play it on that instead.

FF7 for example because I wanted a PC copy. Crysis for example because I saw the game CIB at an expo and only had the CD. SM64 NTSC-U because I didn't own it and later NTSC-J for speedrunning. Japanese copies mainly for collecting, english for playing like my english and japanese of Ocarina of Time. Hollow Knight is an example of it being gifted to me on an account after I already owned it, so it just came with the account. Similar situation with Sonic Generations, owned it on steam and a friend gave me a ps3 copy. That being said I try to not end up with too many copies of the game, especially in the same media (crysis being the exception).

Only in the cases where it was completely remade (Resident Evil) or I also want a handheld version.

3 main reasons:

1) Multiplayer. Some friends are PC gamers, others Playstation, and others Xbox. As Sony's still dragging their feet in the mud for crossplay, having a copy for each of my systems allows me to play with any of my friends.

2) Double dipping achievements/trophies. I like collecting these, and a 2nd release gives me a good reason to replay the game again and still get some sort of reward.

3) Just a good deal. Sometimes you just find a great deal on a game and need to pick it up for the deal's sake.

And as a minor reason: I forgot I already owned the game. There've been a few times where I've gone to put my newest acquisitions away and find that there's already a copy of that game sitting on the shelf. Whoops.

Like many have said, if I pass a game store and see a striking deal I can't resist - Bougth another copy of Tekken 4, mint for 49p the other day!

Beyond that I will have different variations of games, Steelbooks, Special Editions, HD Remasters etc.

i think the only time I've ever bought a 2nd copy of something that wasn't a DEAL was Shenmue II on Xbox, as I genuinely wanted a backup copy incase current one tanked.

I do have 2 cib dragonball advanced adventures for the gba

One of my favourite games of all time so yea a 2nd copy would hurt me in that case.

Not to mention that I wanted to have a 2nd lose cardridge for multiplayer since the 1vs 1 battles are pretty fun. But seeing as a gamestore sold a cib copy in excellent shape for only 7 $ I guess a cib spare isn't to bad instead of only going for the lose cart option wich I might have scored for free in some lots.

i also for fire emblem shadow dragon got the pal and usa version, same games but this is one of the games that introduced me to the more old styled games and one of the games that I had from back in the day.

If it's cheap and if the game means something to me than I'll gladly keep a 2nd cib copy.

I have 3 copies of the game Madagascar for PS2  ;D

The reason is I used to buy big lots for PS2, and a few lots had Madagascar in them.  So I ended up getting 3 over time.  And then nobody really wants it because it's Madagascar for the PS2.  So I just keep them.  It's actually pretty funny.  My brother got me a madagascar for PS2 too after I had 2.  :)

As for buying the same game on 2 different consoles intentionally, I don't think I could do that.  I know a lady who does this and buys 4 games total.  2 for Xbox, 2 for PS4.  2 to keep sealed and 2 to open.  She has bad compulsive disorders of some sort and even her opened games get repackaged in their original celophane meticulously.

I will buy remasters or ports though, Like the PS2 games on PS3.  But only because they usually upgrade them someway.

I got tempted to buy kingdom hearts 3 for both because of a major dilhema.  Because Kingdom Hearts was always a playstation exclusive and I grew up playing it on PS but now its on Xbox but my Xbox One X is 4k 60fps and has achievements that I like.  So I might get it for both down the road.  But so far I chose Xbox for the 4k.  :)

Multiple copies of the same title on the same system? Rarely, and usually it's the normal release and the Greatest Hits version which is usually different enough to merit being a separate release. As for the same game on different platforms? I have TONS of those. PS4/PS3/Vita, PS2/Wii, PS2/Xbox, XB360/PS3, SNES/Gen. Some games I just have to own, whether they were released on their own or as part of a compilation. Pac-Man is a prime example of this. I've had Pac-Man Fever since the 80's and as far as I know there is no known cure.  :P

1.It might of been I forgot I had one or I bought someone's complete collection or a donation.
2.I might be going for a complete set.
3.Got another copy to play multiplayer with friends.
4.To cheep to pass up

This has been why that's happened to me in the past.

That would mostly be do due to using GOG connect, where some games can be transferred into your GOG account from you Steam account. The games available vary and are only available for a shory amount of time. But you can still redeem them, thus having them on both platforms. It's a great feature to be honest, even if it's only available at their seasonal sales.

Most times, it's because I ended up buying games in a lot hence inevitably ending up with a double or two. In the case of my two copies of Twilight Princess HD Collector's edition, the first one J bought, the seller never replied. He started piling up negative feedbacks one right after the other. I figured I was effed and was waiting to file my claim to get my PayPal payment refunded. Sure that I would never get it, I found another copy and bought it. Lo & behold, the first seller actually shipped mine. So, two copies.

Other than that, I may do a collector's and standard version or buy the "complete" edition down the road as is the case with Witcher 3.

I don't have duplicates. It's pretty easy for me to understand having more than one copy though ... better condition disc/box/inserts/manual for starters. The pure scarcity of a title for another.

I usually get duplicates if I find a game in better condition of the one I currently have. I don't keep the duplicate either, I sell it or trade it in, etc.

Other than that the only dupes I keep in my collection is when I get a digital game, then a physical gets announced at a later time, then I get the physical version as well.

Personally, I just have better peace of mind if I have at least two copies of certain games, usually the rarer one. It means that if something happens to the first, I still have another copy on hand. These days I also leave my physical games sealed and just get a digital version for playing.

Most my duplicates are only for games that are broken or have disc rot (And I forgot to throw them out), I cannot fit or afford to own multiple copies only to have them, It's just me I guess I don't like to horde have them because I am trying to be considerate toward other collectors and I don't have to need or the space for duplicates :(

I got two of the same golf games for the PS2 one is sealed but I don't remember how exactly I got the sealed copy, and sometimes I get excited over price of something I already had by mistake :-\

I have a few duplicates of games.

A few of them are due to problems with games playing. I have two Shenmue games because I thought the game wasn't working. Now I think it's my Dreamcast. I don't need either of them now at this point since my boyfriend bought the Shenmue 1+2 for PS4. I also have two Ape Escape 1's for PS1 because my first copy is too scratched to play. I have two Adventure Time Explore the Dungeon games (one for PS3 and one for 3DS). I have those because the PS3 one doesn't work.

I have multiple copies of Need for Speed Carbon because I got them in a bundle deal at a yard sale. Why they had multiple copies? Idk.

I might have other duplicates but I can't think of any others at the moment.

Basically, most of mine were not bought with the INTENT of having several copies.

With the exception of I have both original versions of Disgaea games AND the PC or PS Vita versions. I got the originals, and then later upgraded to the superior versions since they have additional content. I just haven't bothered getting rid of the originals yet.

Final Fantasy IV is the game I have the most copies of. SNES, Wii VC, PS1, GBA and PSP. And this is to preserve the 2D version, which Square is ignoring in favor of the ugly 3D remake.

I went through a brief stint trying to collect every release of Final Fantasy, but stopped when I realized that meant multiple copies of Final Fantasy 13. One of these days I might go purge superfluous titles, but I'm too lazy to now.

Lunar: Silver Star is one of my favorite RPGs, and is radically different with each variant, so it's worth having them all.

I bought a copy of Burgertime without looking it over too well- I thought it was for Intellivision, but it was for 2600. It also turned out I already had it on Intellivision. So I said screw it & proceeded to buy Burgertime for every pre-NES console I have, just to be stupid. Maybe I'll expand that someday to include NES & beyond, just to be silly.

I don’t have too many same title games that are cross platform. I have a lot of collectors editions and standard editions of the same game though. I usually open the standard and keep the CE sealed.

From a collectors stand point, I guess it could be viewed kind of like baseball cards. Same player, same year, different brand (fleer, topps, donruss etc)...same thing? Not exactly.

A few reasons why I have a ton of duplicates.

1. One to open and play and the other to stay new/sealed to collect.
2. Different versions (standard, gold, etc)
3. Different console releases (like someone mentioned earlier, like playing on multiple platforms)
4. It was cheap (and better to replace a lesser quality copy in my collection)
5. Predicting them being rarer later on

I've been doing a lot of #1 and #3 lately.

I have a few duplicates. Obviously, remakes don't really count. I don't think compilations do, either. Final Fantasy IV is a part of both categories. The SNES, DS, and PSP versions are all different enough that owning copies of each isn't a big deal.

Then there's "Game of the Year" versions, or whatever, where oftentimes getting those copies is the same value or better than getting all the DLC. So for games like Borderlands and L.A. Noire I have two copies just because I already had the base games when they came out, but never got the DLC. The GOTY editions were waay cheaper later on than getting the DLC individually.

I also have two copies of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, one on PS2 and one on Gamecube. This is because my PS2 would no longer read the disc. I didn't just get rid of the game though because it's the PS2, not the disc. So I just snagged a Gamecube copy at a yard sale for probably about $1.

Otherwise I don't bother with duplicates. I don't care about keeping a copy sealed and using another to play, or anything like that.

Usually, I only do this for a series I truly love. For example, I own every single version of every Mortal Kombat game on every system except for the last two releases. Before I had a high-end gaming PC I solely gamed on consoles my whole life until about 10 years ago, so I rebought a lot of games that were for consoles on Steam. Sometimes I just had a version that I played when it was released, but later bought it on another console that it was best for. For example, I rebought ALL of my PS2 games on the original Xbox as I never had an Xbox growing up and all the multi-platform titles run best on that system. Some games I bought have different cover art or were released at different times on different system with different features or collector's editions. There's lots of reasons.

For series I have a great fondest to compared to others like:

Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil
Dark Souls
Final Fantasy
Mortal Kombat

I wont get into details in what ways but thats my primary reason. While I do have duplicates of the exact games only on different consoles, its only a few but also temporary for the time being.

It’s all a numbers game, my friend. That, and hoarding. Some people use collecting as an excuse to hoard, regardless of hobby. "I wasn't gonna leave it there for 25¢/50¢/75¢!", "I'll pick this up everyday for a dollar!" are some of the most common phrases collectors tend to use as their excuse to hoard. Just because it costs you less than what you would pay for a loaf of bread doesn’t mean you need it. You don’t need countless Maddens or all those crappy Wii shovelware games, or the umpteenth copy of the same game for a different console.

I personally have a few duplicates, but not because I looked for them. For instance I have a copy of the PC version of Final Fantasy VII, which I got in a lot. I was going to sell it, but it makes for good shelf candy. Same with Robot Alchemic Drive for the PS2; I bought a copy on eBay that turned out to be a dud, which I ended up keeping after the seller seemingly disappeared from the face of the Earth. I also own a Greatest Hits copy of Mega Man Legends and Metal Gear Solid of which I also own the original black label versions, but keep the other two because of the sentimental value they have. Any other duplicates I have I keep with the intent of selling.

I was going through my PS2 games, and just realized Astérix & Obélix: Kick Buttix is the NA version of Astérix & Obélix XXL. So, great, I have a dupe. I originally got it off of eBay after a delivery mishap where the seller told me to choose a game of equal value and that essentially was the only one that caught my eye. Regardless, I tend to research every game I purchase, so I can't believe I overlooked this.

Oh well, spilled milk.

When it comes to GotY Editions, I have always gone on to sell my original Edition of the game (Unless it is a Steelbook or something fancy). Using LA Noire as an example, I had the Original Edition, then later got the Complete Edition & Sold my Original Edition. However, I have since got the PS4 Remaster of LA Noire, yet I have kept my Complete Edition on PS3! If I ever play the game again, I'm sure the PS4 version will be the choice I pick but I like having the PS3 version for that console + if in the future I may have a separate set up for each console I'd feel better have the Complete Edition accessible on the PS3.

I know it is excessive but at least I have the gaul to let go of the Original Editions - I did this recently with NieR Automata with their up coming GotY Edition.

That's essentially the same reason why I sold both MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Snake Eater after getting Substance and Subsistence, receptively. Only thing that gave the former any form of worth to my collection was their manuals since they were completely different.

I think, unless you're a hardcore collector, selling older/outdated versions of games should be common practice with everyone.

I pick up a lot of my games at thrift stores, so I will grab all the games they have no matter what and if it turns out I have the same game on a different platform I still keep it. I've been collecting for 21 years, and collecting games is my passion. Always excited to add a new game to my home, and never had issues with space. I always love building a nice evened-out collection, and it feels good finding games that you don't have yet for a platform. It's also part of completionism for a particular platform. I've heard of a friend of a friend that has every PS3 game released in North America except for about a dozen left to find. Also certain games play better on one platform than others.  I have Need For Speed Carbon on every platform it was released on, and it's cool to see how it was developed to handle each system's hardware. It is most certainly not "hoarding" (funny how UK gamers love to bash USA gamers about this).

While organizing my PS2 games, I realized I have a few more duplicates: a second copy of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, which has a blemish on the face of the disc (it's small, but I’m unsure if it affects the game in some way—I would have to play it fully to know); a sealed copy of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories; and a sealed black label copy of Shadow of the Colossus that I got in two different lots years ago; a sealed copy of God Hand, as well as a sealed copy of Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, the first print of Front Mission, and Mega Man ZX both sealed for the GBA and NDS respectively that Amazon sent me by mistake. The latter was back in 2008-09 when I used to buy a lot from Amazon, and they in turn screwed a bunch of my orders (more on that on another topic). Good times.

i'd say in the wiiu ps3 xbox 360 era and up selling outdated versions of games might even be a thing for more serious collectors.

look at for example wii u titles having same games on switch with better grapics and extra content.
or say ps3 and xbox 360 with GOTY editions of games with all dlc and such.

before there was a reason to have duplicates of sames since there where differences between games but nowadays it's just straight up better and way more common thanks to dlc and definetive editions.

Indeed. For example, I just recently acquired the GOTYE of Red Dead Redemption, so I sold the original release and Undead Nightmare.

Overall, I will usually wait until a definitive edition gets released; it feels far more practical.

Would never do that because a lot of the times the enhanced editions cut stuff out.

I was pretty sure that I had already replied to this topic a long time ago...
Oh well...

Basically, in my case, if it is a game I really like or that has some personal relevance for me (such as the King of Fighters '98, of which I own versions released for the Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Saturn and Dreamcast, for example), I like to own it in as many different consoles as I can.

Other than that, I only buy duplicates when I find them for very cheap (like under ¥500 or so) and I usually give them to some friend or trade for something else I want.

I usually don't keep duplicates unless there's some notable difference in the games- for example, I techinically have 3 copies of Shadow of the Colossus: the original, the remaster, and the remake. Very little difference in content, but graphics changed & I love that game, so I keep them all. I also tend to keep console/portable variants- they're usually different, but even when they're not the portable makes a big enough difference to hang onto. Otherwise, I give away spares- when I got the upgraded versions of Horizon: Zero Dawn & Final Fantasy 15, the originals went to my fiancé & his siblings. We've actually got a couple of copies of Monster Hunter World floating around with no purpose, since everyone bought the Master Edition with Iceborne. Not sure what we'll do with those- there's no one to give them away to in our group anymore!

I do keep multiple copies of one game around- Burgertime. I screwed up & bought an Atari version of the game thinking it was an Intellivision version (I really wasn't paying attention.) When I got home, I found out I'd made that mistake & I already had the Intellivision cart anyway. So I said to myself "You know what? Screw it- I collect Burgertime carts now!" I now have that game on Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 7800 (in the 'beef drop' homebrew), and NES. I need to pick up that Burgertime Party game on Switch once it gets cheap.

How about this one?

The Walmart I go to has them on clearance for $5; I thought of getting one, but I've never really liked the game that much.

I actually have an OCD hang-up about buying the same game across multiple platforms. I don't like to do it, as a general rule. I don't even care for crossing a specific series between different platforms even when it's an entirely different game. On most occasions, I'll never re-buy the same game unless I come across one in better condition than mine. In such a case, I'll usually end up keeping the beater copy just because it's usually not worth any money. I don't sell unless it's going to pay off, otherwise I'll hold onto the extras I have and put them into storage somewhere.

In very rare cases I will break my general rule and buy multiple different ports of the same game because I like the game so well. Like for example, if you are a Doom fan, you would probably like to own all of the many various ports of Doom. Even though it's the same game, you just want to see how differently it plays, or what minor changes were made to each version. On rare occasion, I will do something like that. In most cases, it's one version for me. Multiplats usually go to my multiplat console of choice, and the other consoles tend to be more about the exclusives unless a version is known to be superior.

This indeed a good question so here are my answers, I own three copies of Animal Crossing New Leaf because one of them belongs to my daughter, the second to my wife and the third for myself, own two copies of Animal Crossing Home Designers because purchased first the physical version for my daughter, months later I purchased her a New Nintendo 3DS which came with a pre instaled version of the same title, so the physical version now belongs to my wife, got two E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Moon Patrol copies because my Atari cartridges were a gift from a friend and I dont want to sell these games, got two digital copies of Layers of Fear because they were free, same thing happened with Q.U.B.E. 2, got two copies of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance because purchased first the physical version and then they give me free the digital one, got two Resident Evil 4 because I purchased the physical the day of it's release and years later puchased the digital one because it got an awesome discount, same thing happened with Resident Evil Code Veronica, my two cartridges of Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt were a gift as well  ;D

I've thought about it- but so far I've only got carts, not stand-alone devices. I suppose if I ever stumble across one of these (https://vgcollect.com/item/21767) cheap enough, then I'll branch out.

Personally I think it's much better to have different releases of games you like instead of making a fullset that'll be filled with garbage that you don't like. That's why I have about a dozen versions of GTA San Andreas for example, but no JRPGs or sports titles at all. Insead of doing a fullset of one platform, one region and keeping only the original releases, instead I don't fullset but I collect various editions from various regions and various platforms of the same games.
