Modern Video Games / E3 2018: Sony
« on: June 11, 2018, 02:13:44 am »
Last show of the day and the second of what are considered the big three of E3.  I was always expecting Sony to do well, but Microsoft can give them a run for their money this year.  Sure, Microsoft had mostly a lot of multi-platform games and very few games releasing this year that are exclusives, but they had some bigger hitters to reveal.  Sony will likely have stuff for Last of Us 2, Days Gone, Spider-Man, Ghosts of Tsushima, and hopefully something more legit from Death Stranding.

Sony starts at 9PM EST on Monday.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: The PC Game Show
« on: June 11, 2018, 02:07:27 am »
After the past few years of watching E3, I feel like this can be one of the shows I question if I'll skip or not.  They are always so long, they spend forever on many games they shouldn't, and they spend a good bit of time hocking PC hardware.  Like sure, the console developers hock their hardware too, but its usually actually new hardware, and not just...processors and graphics cards.  Sure, they are great and needed, but you can't get that excited for PC parts and I'm a PC gamer.

They also don't usually have a ton of new and exciting things to show off.  Like I don't remember them doing anything big last year and looking back at an article, it wasn't anything special.  Maybe that changes this year, I don't know, we'll see...

The PC Gaming Show starts at 6PM EST on Monday.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm taking the easy way out on this since I skipped most of it, as they announced lots of smaller games and such and while there were some good reveals surprisingly (Check out the art style for Sable, it's gorgeous), there's a lot here, so I'm just gonna rip off Destructoids list.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: Ubisoft
« on: June 11, 2018, 01:54:41 am »
I always feel like Ubisoft shows either can be a good time or the cringiest.  It varies year to year and depends on what they have to show.  Some stuff to expect would be Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Division 2, probably something with Tom Clancy, Splinter Cell is a guarantee, probably the Mario Rabbids DLC, likely something on Beyond Good and Evil 2, and Skull & Bones, among some others.

Ubisoft starts at 4pm EST on Monday.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Also skipping stuff previously talked about.

-Just Dance 2019 releases in October on most systems.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: Square-Enix
« on: June 11, 2018, 01:49:41 am »
Third day of shows starts off with Square-Enix.  A lot of their stuff is already known I feel, like we'll expect more Kingdom Hearts 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, probably Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, Just Cause 4, Octopath Traveler, maybe Dissidia DLC, and a good chance of seeing something on Final Fantasy 7 Remake.  Not sure what surprises there could be, maybe talking about their big Switch push, perhaps another classic getting a remake/remaster (Even though their track history isn't super great).

The Square-Enix show starts at 1PM Eastern on Monday.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Not gonna include stuff of the games we already knew about.

-New content update for Final Fantasy XIV, along with a Monster Hunter World Crossover.
-Dragon Quest XI September 4th.  Brave Exvius crossover with Dragon Quest.
-Babylon's Fall announced, a brand new game from Platinum Games.  Fantasy setting, PS4/PC, 2019 release.
-The Quiet Man.  Some sort of modern action game.  More info to be revealed in August.
-New scenes and Ratatouille stuff shown off in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Madness.  Madness is what I expect from this.  Also maybe Metal Wolf Chaos? They had a weird tease that could be this.  Last year, they put on an Adult Swim-esque, farcical bit of nonsense, that maybe they'll do again or not...Seeing their tease for it, I'm guessing they are going full bonkers again.

Expect utter nonsense at 11pm EST on Sunday.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: Bethesda
« on: June 09, 2018, 06:09:43 pm »
I'm pretty excited for this one.  Bethesda has a nice batch of consistently good properties they can show off.

Rage 2 was a surprise announcement, but I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic shooters.  We will learn what Fallout 76 is, which is rumored to be an online survival game. There's whatever "Starfield" is, said to be some big scifi game.  People are still craving to get Elder Scrolls 6 and there's other properties they could talk about, such as the Doom sequel.

The Bethesda event is 9:30pm EST on Sunday.

------------------------------------------------------------

-Rage 2 Spring 2019.
-Elder Scrolls Legends getting a visual overhaul and will be released on stuff like Switch.
-Elder Scrolls Online related things.
-Doom: Eternal.  A sequel, will get a full reveal at Quakecon.
-Prey update out tonight.  Prey DLC coming that offers up a randomized challenge mode.
-Wolfenstein: Youngblood.  Set in 1980's Paris with BJ's twin daughters.
-Fallout 76 confirmed as an online multiplayer experience, I think kinda like what GTAV does with theirs.  I'm very unsure.  November 2018 release.
-Fallout Shelter on PS4 and Switch tonight.
-Elder Scrolls Blades mobile game, VR support, multiple releases, Fall 2018.  Free to Play.
-Starfield confirmed.  Scifi singleplayer RPG.
-Elder Scrolls 6 confirmed.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: Microsoft
« on: June 09, 2018, 06:01:48 pm »
Well the EA event was kind of big 'ole dud, and while I'm not expecting greatness from Microsoft, it should still generally be better.  We should get more info on the next Ori game, there's rumor of a new Halo, and there will likely be some stalwart Microsoft franchises like Gears of War and Forza.  Crackdown 3 was confirmed to be delayed till next year, but it will likely get more footage shown because they kinda need to make people care about it.

I think Microsoft needs some really big surprises.  I'm still hopeful for a return of a classic Rare property.  Banjo-Kazooie or Battletoads maybe.

The Microsoft event starts at 4pm EST on Sunday.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

-Halo Infinite Announced.
-Ori and the Will of the Wisps for 2019.

Modern Video Games / E3 2018: EA Play
« on: June 08, 2018, 07:41:54 pm »
I've been doing the E3 threads for us for abit now, so I'll be doing that again this year also.  I'll be putting up the threads the day before, so we can have casual conversation for the upcoming event, and then as stuff is released and talked about, I'll update the main post with all the relevant information so people who aren't watching the live events can stay in the know.

Kicking off the E3 festivities Saturday is the EA Play event at 2PM Eastern.  We'll be getting multiplayer gameplay and likely more details for Battlefield V, something I'm very excited for.  We'll also get more details on Anthem and what it will overall be as a game. Those are the two known big things, with other surprises expected to happen.

EA has a lot to make up for after their disastrous last year.  As things are at the moment, they are looking up, but this is EA, it's always been EA, so it's always good to feel worried that they'll screw up something.

----------------------------------------------------------

-Battlefield V gets a Battle Royale mode.  More details later, but will have the full Battlefield experience of team play, vehicles, and destruction within it.

-Star Wars: The Fallen Order, set between Episode 3 and 4 coming from Respawn Entertainment next year.

-Solo movie content with some new modes next week.  Clone wars era content with a new Genosis map, and hero/villains will be Dooku, Grievous, Anakin, and Obi Wan.

-Unravel 2 with co-op. Game is out today.

-Sea of Solitude.  New indie platformer?  Didn't get a lot of specific details. Early 2019.

-Command & Conquer: Rivals.  Mobile Game.  I'm sad.

-Anthem out February 22nd.

Just revealed at a media event in Tokyo, they confirmed the rumors for the first main Pokemon game on console, a reboot of Pokemon Yellow, alongside having an Eevee version.

-Normal capture gameplay is replaced with Pokemon Go pokeball capturing.
-The game now includes co-op.
-Kanto Region
-Can have all sorts of Pokemon following you.
-Pokemon Go integration, sharing stuff between the games.
-No more random battles, Pokemon appear on the field.
-Pokeball Plus, which is basically a controller that you can use for playing the game and transferring between Pokemon Go.
-Release November 16th.

Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jRtpMKLsts

At the start, they showed off a F2P/F2D Pokemon game called Pokemon Quest.  It's for Switch and Mobile.  Just a little action game with a square body style to everything.  It's available on Switch right now and will be on mobile at the end of next month.

Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0AEUmgGHRE

And they said there are plans for a regular Pokemon RPG in the second half of 2019, more in line with a proper release like X/Y or Sun/Moon.

Modern Video Games / E3 Rumor/Leak Discussion
« on: May 14, 2018, 05:23:45 pm »
Less than a month till E3 and the rumors and leaks are flying out.  To anyone diving into this, if you want to go as spoiler free as possible into E3, best to avoid this thread.

The current big one that seems to have some slight support to it is that Retro Studios secret project is Star Fox: Grand Prix.  An F-Zero meets Diddy Kong Racing experience.  Basically the adventure racing game I've been wanting since the original DKR.  This actually has me excited for Star Fox for once if its true.

Something less exciting, but was basically confirmed due to the Rage 2 reveal, were and assortment of games leaked on Walmart Canada with placeholders.  Some of that we already knew were coming, but it means we'll see stuff at E3.

Just Cause 4
Splinter Cell
Dragon Quest 2 (PS4/XBO)
LEGO DC Villans
Borderlands 3
Rage 2
Gears of War 5
Forza Horizons 5
Assassin's Creed

Modern Video Games / Smash Bros 2018 Brainstorm
« on: May 04, 2018, 04:53:55 pm »
We are about a month from Nintendo fully revealing Smash Bros 2018, so I thought it would be fun to to talk about what you feel will happen with the new game and what new characters they could add.

With the likelihood of this game seemingly less 4.5 and maybe more of a proper sequel, (as of right now), and that we are in a new gen, I want to see some classic characters get abit of an overhaul.  Not drastic for most, but the previous game had to make decisions based on 3DS hardware, so right away, we should probably see characters return to how they were, such as Zelda/Shiek, could bring back Ice Climbers, and Pokemon Trainer.

As we saw with Link being BOTW Link, I'm hoping this means some general changes to his style and abilities.  Moves are made to look more like the BOTW representation and he could have some new moves that utilize stuff added to BOTW.  I want to see the same with a few other characters like Mario and probably a couple others that could use some updating.  Ganondorf is a big one that needs a complete redesign I feel. His moveset is awful in terms of character representation, so something that works better with him wielding a weapon would be best.  I personally want him to go full Hyrule Warriors.  It's his best design and would give him a cool dual blade weapon style.

As for new characters, this isn't exactly realistic, just new characters I think would be fun.

Linkle - Dipping into that Hyrule Warriors non-canon again, I think her dual crossbow style would be pretty fun.  Would make her probably abit similar to like Bayonetta or other somewhat ranged types.  She has a great design and I'd much rather have her over like Toon Link.  Final Smash would be her big magic attack from Hyrule Warrors.  Forget exactly what it is at the moment, but I'll remember soon enough lol

Urbosa - Zelda heavy to start, I know, but being that we got 4 new characters with BOTW that are all perfect Smash Bros characters, so it can't be overlooked and at least it's not another Link.  Any one could work, but personally I want to see another female character I'd like to play, while also being real standout in design from everyone else.  Hits that Bayonetta feel of being quite different with her size and body type and makes her stand out among the rest of the female characters.  Sword and shield style, lightning abilities, and her Final Smash would use her Divine Beast to do an energy blast or just some big crazy lighting strike.

Shovel Knight - He's already got an amiibo! Its an easy choice! But seriously, while they tend to put more well known characters if they aren't Nintendo original, I think he makes for an excitingly original character with his looks and moveset.  A lot of his abilities could be related to the gear he can find ingame.  Makes him abit Link-esque in that way, but there's more than enough originality to make him completely unique.  I think his Final Smash should use a combo attack with Shield Knight.

Banjo-Kazooie - This is one of those long shot additions.  The inclusion would be Cloud or Ryu level in terms of surprise.  Phil Spencer has publicly said he's not against it, and it's not like Microsoft is doing anything of substance with their properties, so maybe they could let Nintendo use them for promotion in Smash Bros and let these classic characters return to the world they left behind.  They got a bunch of fun abilities from the games to use and the Final Smash could be Mumbo Jumbo turning them into a couple different things.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - They made it into Injustice 2, they got a new series out now, so why not Smash Bros? I feel like they could be one character, like Injustice 2, like the female/male versions of the Fire Emblem characters, but each one has some simple variations for their weapon style.  This way all 4 could be in there and not just pick like Leo or Raph.  This also wouldn't be a crazy inclusion as Splatoon is doing a promotion for the new show.  Not 100% sure of what a Final Smash would be, but maybe it's one of those focus attacks, with all four Turtles coming out to strike at once in a small area.

Modern Video Games / March Nintendo Direct

So wow, Smash Bros for Switch announced for 2018 with the Inklings coming. I wonder if it'll be just a port or a full release.  They didn't give it any other tag to it aside from Super Smash Bros, which sorta makes me feel like they could be looking at making it essentially Smash 5 perhaps, but that's just me guessing.

Other stuff was announced, dates for games.  I'll start posting that stuff here in a minute.  Skipping 3DS stuff...

Off Topic / Favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Designs
« on: February 28, 2018, 09:39:10 pm »
The Turtles have been around a very long time, nearly 35 years now, and we are getting another new cartoon show and design for them.  As a longtime fan since the original cartoon, I've always enjoyed them in some way.  Less so nowadays with lackluster movies and games, but I will always have a soft spot for them.  So for kicks, pick your 3 favorite designs of theirs.

I'll list what have generally been kinda the main looks for them, but feel free to add in others I don't show because there's comic variations, some game stuff, and like the Japanese OVA's among others I assume.

1984 Original Mirage Comics TMNT

1987 Cartoon Series TMNT

1990 Live Action Movie TMNT

Modern Video Games / Good D&D Based Games?
« on: February 10, 2018, 02:36:39 am »
I've basically spent the past two weeks playing Monster Hunter World and catching up on a D&D stream I stopped watching like a year ago, practically as much time as I put into Monster Hunter (over 100 hours), I listened to D&D, and while I'm not exactly looking to jump into a pen & paper game (or assisted with something like Tabletop Simulator) right now, I was wondering if there's been any good recent games in a D&D setting.  Somewhere in the just couple years only because certain RPG's I feel are tougher to checkout the more outdated they get.

It seems so ripe for it, but I never hear about any games based on it these days.  Like is there are a Skyrim/Witcher D&D equivalent?  Seems like a setup ripe for games and I know they have been made in the past, but I thought about it and not much really came up for me.  I feel like I'm just kinda wanting something with a real engaging fantasy world right now as I haven't played a pure sword and magic fantasy game in a long time and I wouldn't count stuff like the Dark Souls 3 DLC from last year, due to its lack of storytelling, or Monster Hunter World, because it has no real story or world building and is mostly to progress you towards new monsters to kill.

Modern Video Games / 2018 Games You Are Excited For
« on: January 07, 2018, 04:29:18 pm »
It's a year of newness, so what are you looking forward to playing this year?

Right off the bat, Monster Hunter World is coming up at the end of the month and I'm pretty excited for it as a Hunter noob, being that I was always interested in the series, but never jumped into it for a number of reasons.  I play the beta and it's pretty nuts, so it should be fun.

Also this month unfortunately is Dragon Ball FighterZ, releasing the same day as Monster Hunter World, so it might have to wait.  I'm not the biggest fighting game fan, but this is one of the best looking Dragon Ball games I've ever seen, plush it's gonna have a killer soundtrack.

Metro Exodus is way up on my list as I'm big fan of post apocalyptic settings and in particular I really loved the last two games.  Top quality atmosphere.

Valykria Chronicles 4 was a welcomed surprise for me, as I've been wanting another game since they released the first one on PC.  And that Revolution spinoff didn't interest me at all.

Code Vein I'm hoping turns out good as it basically seems like anime Dark Souls and I'm totally cool with that.

Attack on Titan 2 is how you make a musou game really interesting and unique and I really enjoyed the first one.  Of course it does get repetitive, hard not to, but I loved using the 3D maneuver gear and they look to be really improving the sequel.

For the rest, it's quite a variety of stuff I'm either interested in, but not like super excited for, or I'm waiting to hear more on the game itself and how it may turn out...Like I was excited for the possibility of Anthem, but then EA fucked up Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Need for Speed with lootboxes and I don't even know anymore.  I gotta be worried for the next Battlefield game now! Dammit EA!

Anthem
Extinction
Far Cry 5
Darksiders 3
God of War
The Last of Us Part 2
Mega Man 11
Metal Gear Survive
Red Dead Redemption 2
