Title: Have you ever overpaid or made a bad decision and lost money with buying games?
Post by: marvelvscapcom2 on December 21, 2017, 10:54:16 am
Hello everyone :).  I just got hit today pretty hard on overspending :(.  It hurts a little less because It was gifted money but I know my local walmart never ever has classic edition SNESs.

So I figured i'd buy a fair priced one on ebay.  I ended up spending 112.99 for one shipped free, mint never opened.  I figured after fees and shipping the seller would be about breaking even and it was the chepaest I could find.

Mosey on into Walmart and they have a big pile of them for the 1st time ive seen and I frequent the walmart too.  So I lost about 32 dollars.

But i'm still super happy. :D

Has anyone else every over spent or had a price drop after they bought something for more?  What is the most you've lost in one item.  :).

On the regular it seems. Over the Black Friday weekend I ended up returning about $120 worth of stuff because I was able to find it cheaper over the course of the weekend. Luckily I had plenty of room on my CC to weather such a thing but it's still mildly annoying having to wait 20+ minutes at a time because customer services lines for returns are SLOW.

Some CEs I bought day one I've seen where I could have waited and gotten them for WAY less had I done so. I imagine I'm going to feel the burn on Xenoblade Chronicles 2 CE and Fire Emblem Warriors. However, some stuff I did wait to buy on I have found for great prices including the Last Guardian CE for $53 and the Borderlands Handsome Collection w/RC Claptrap for $59.

It's a crap shoot half the time it seems.  :P

Tons of times.  Almost any CE these days winds up going clearance.

I'm trying to think of one time where I was really upset about it.  I know I've done it with other stuff like books and movies.  I bought some pokemon books years ago for like $20 total, found out that not only were they worthless, but they were just different versions of the same book over and over.

I try to stick with what I know, but sometimes I forget and re-learn the same lesson over and over.

Not really.  I never really but anything that I am unsure about.

same here but not really CE but just brand new games on release in general, the very few that I do buy though,

Than again if I buy a 3d mario game or smash bros on release I do so to join the hype train early worth more to me than the savings if I wait for some time, not to mention it supports the company unlike waiting for a game to end up in bargain bins for low dollar.

It's not always about value else you can't enjoy current gen stuff that much on release.

I will say though retail prices are pretty normal for new games everyone does so even those expensive collectors editions so considering those as bad deals if you bought them for the normal retail prices is a bit much even though those might be the worst deals in the 2nd hand market for most of us since they might be allot lower than their original msrp.

I can only say based on this year that if I decide to buy stuff on Black Friday, I should atleast hold on to the receipt until around Xmas or something since a couple of games I had bought are much cheaper now through some stores like FFXII and South Park provided you have GCU from Best Buy.

I have the overwhelming bad luck of always buying a game right before it gets a price drop or is part of a huge sale.

Back in the early days when I first began collecting I probably overpaid slightly at a few game stores that I used to hit up a lot to start my collection. Other than that my biggest regrets with collecting involve passing on games that later shot up in price a ton or passing on something and not knowing it was special.

On the topic of bad decisions, there have been a handful of times since I began collecting where I had quite a bit of sticker shock when my credit card bill arrived. It has never been anything I didn't bounce back from, but there were times where I had to budget or forgoe doing something else in order to pay for my video game splurging the month prior.

I have.  I think anyone that collects will eventually.  We all make mistakes.  Hell, I overpaid for my Flintstones 2.  I got what was a good deal at the time, but then the game took a big dive.  I paid short of full market value, but if I had waited a month I would have saved over $100.

I bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color. I hated the system.
I bought Starcraft II, I ended up not liking RTS after not playing them for many years.

I didn't realize it had gone down to the $500 range again. Of course Little Samson is still over a $1000

It was up around $900 when I bought it.  I paid quite a bit less than that, but it still dropped right round a month later

Don't think I've ever overpaid more than maybe $10 on an item. A few times I've given store owners the top eBay asking price that they looked up, just figured what the heck, let them have that extra, I just want to take the item and be done with it.

Although I do remember buying Brutal Legend at launch, a $60 game. The game was $20 in a month. That always happens with new releases, so I just don't buy $60 new releases anymore.

It's not to uncommon for very expensive games to have their lows and peaks as far as prices go no matter how many people leave or join the hobby. Prices go up and down peaks and low differences can be huge.

Europe is no exception but than were talking about the top tier value games like megaman x3 mr gimmick

It's just what some individuals have in their pocket right now to spend to spend it on an expensive game.

Overpaid? Absolutely. Regretted a purchase? Never.

Though maybe the fact that I'm having to start over from nearly scratch may make that opinion change :/

Though I "buy for function" - rather than buying for value or to flip - so I won't pay more than what I feel a game is worth to enjoy, that way I never feel that buyer's remorse if I see it cheaper later (may not have gotten "the best deal", but having gotten "my money's worth").

Honestly what I end up regretting more often are sales - not purchases :) (Trades are a weird spot, since I've had good and bad ones, but can't say I really "regret the trade", so much as regret having to hunt yet again for what I traded).

As far as retro stuff goes

Sometimes something is in far worse condition than one might think, breaking even or a small profit is bad deal for me. It's not super uncommon to have some part in a worse condition than one might think or a broken console wich isn;t a big deal really since usually it's just a small part of a set but for an entire lot to end up like trash that's a true rarity I lost a couple tenners I was greedy at the time since I would usually not buy such a lot but I saw potential and it was dirt cheap or so I would think, the trash can was my best friend though not worth the effort :D I sometimes even regret buys that give a nice profit and adds since I don't want to be stuck with an extra console to be honest.

But honestly my most regrettable buys for me are lots that contain potential great adds for the collection but are yet in my desired condition, I really regret those deals when cib probotector, cib shinobi III, cib ranger, cib runsaber cib etc etc were just not in my condition thanks to some cover damage wich barely reaches out of my standards, It's really nice that one can get extra money since the condition is plenty to many but in my opinion those are my most regrettable retro deals. It;s always a shame if a potential add is yet in the desired condition even though a deal is that great, however it is a blast if the most wanted games are in the desired condition and only less desirable items that one wanted are not or everything is in the right condition.

My most dissapointed retro deal was a huge gameboy lot, for most the standards are great and thus the profit was very nice even if I kept all the games that I wanted to keep but out of 15 potential cib gba adds wich included many uncommon great gba games some wich I still have yet to add in the collection only 1 cib game was in my condition  :P

Still though as far as rarities or better games go, in allot of cases in my experience people play the bad games or the most mainstream ones wich leave the more uncommon rare and usually sought after ones in excellent shape left in the closet forgotten used one or very few times ;D that's one of the things that can favor one in allot of cases however it unfortunately is not always the case, but especially with excellent condition stuff when people barely use it it has a very high chance of those odds actually happening that one only play their mario all stars or sim city.

I had a near miss with an eBay auction once. A seller had a bunch of rare games for sale and I won 2 of them. They sent the invoice right away, but I insisted on the seller posting them via registered post and asked for a new quote for the postage. The seller kept ignoring me and resending the same basic postage cost, whilst I kept asking for a registered service or something secure - I've had a lot of things go missing in the post before and no way was I going to get something that cost that much sent through the standard mail!

After about a week or so, they stopped responding to me, but I still kept emailing for a while until I started to get errors saying the email was not in use. When I went back onto eBay to check I suddenly saw their feedback had tanked. It was a huge batch of negative feedback from all the other people who had won the other rare games and paid the seller, who then vanished! I managed to get in contact with a few of the other buyers (this was before eBay hid the names of the people leaving feedback) and all the ones I spoke to told me the same story - they sent the money right away and then when nothing turned up they emailed the seller only to find that the emails were now bouncing back.

I was lucky I didn't lose a crazy amount of money because of my huge, and justified, distrust of Royal Mail.
