Title: Which smell do you like better? New game or old game smell?
Post by: marvelvscapcom2 on April 05, 2017, 06:34:10 pm
They both have such a unique and very different smell. :D.   One smells like a fresh plastic factory fresh celophane. As you remove the fresh plastic and open the case to take the first sniff it is like ripping through a portal into another dimension.  It smells so strong of just all different untouched materials from the factory from fresh plastic to the scent of the disc. All the layers that make a game combine for one brand new, clean and intoxicating scent that gets stored in the case by the celophane.  It smells incredible.  The new game smell that we all know and love.  :)

Or the oppisite. :).  A vintage boxed atari 2600 game. 30+ years on its resume. Stored in an old man's attic, sold at a flea market on a table with floppy discs and vinyl records.  Smelling like aged plastic and cardboard. vintage and musty.  The scent of aged comic book pages.  The smell of worn ink.  Almost fruity.  Like walking into an antique store.   The smell of a worn but loved cardboard box with the unique scent every NES/Atari cartridge seems to have.  Almost like they can tell a story through your nasal passages.    :D

Which scent do you think is more incredible to smell.   A fresh next gen game fresh out of its plastic housing.  Or a aged cardboard CIB/ Cartridge with decades of history in it's scent?  :)

For me it's really close but i love a vintage NES box.  I love the smell of old paper or old cardboard and the aged pin connectors tend to smell unique and i can't even describe the scent.  It smells like childhood,  like retro gaming love that has endured the ages.  It truly can't be remade or bottled.

Never smell old games, you have no idea how it was truly kept. Last time I smelt an old game was because there was an odor that I never smelt in my room before. turns out the last owner of the game I just bought was a smoker and I nearly puked from how disgusting the stench was after realizing where the smell was coming from.

Old games can have a funky but acceptable smell to them sometimes, but other times they just kinda stink. I like the smell of a fresh new game.

There was a thread like this long ago that introduced me to "brown sauce". Apparently is some weird stuff you East Coasters and British people eat on your hamburgers and hot dogs, and somehow get all over your retro games.

None of my games or systems really smell like anything in particular, new or old. So that's good I guess.

I've been in the IT field for 16 years. As someone who has made extra cash working on PCs/Laptops on the side, there's not much worse than firing up a computer of someone who is a smoker. The stale smell that emanates from withing the fan cooled case is something I can only describe as amazingly wretched.

I'd have to say that while the new plastic smell is appealing, I would have to say my favorite part is the sound of popping open a new game.

I usually smell Nintendo 64 cartridges to see if there dirty and most times they do carry a scent. I like the smell  of Cartridges too, as long if the smell isn't too smelly. It does make you think of it's previous owner. I don't like musty smells, so a box in someones attic, would cause my allergies to flare up.

N64 cartridges that been setting a while and not played for a while do have a distinctive woody smell on the bottom of them

I live on the east coast and I have no idea what brown sauce you are talking about.

That was actually the first thing I thought of when I read the first post.  Oh the brown sauce.

It really depends where you get your old games from and the condition.

Excellent upwards condition games especially cib usually just smell great and sometimes brand new wich have a special scent. It has that nice vintage cardboard or plastic smell from the past.

However for lesser condition games there can be a bad smell, much higher chance than again I'm not an anything goes collector.

For most lose and anything goes condition collectors sure this topic might apply, Pretty much not to people who collect stuff in excellent upwards condtition as far as bad smells go.

Cib cardboard games in excellent condition smell pretty nice if it has been wel taken care off. Vintage stuff actually smells nice

Also games out of houses from people who smoke are pretty much always in bad shape packaging wise. even inserts I always avoid such lots.

I almost never have old games that smell bad, but than again I almost never get my deals from thrift stores, garage sales or flea markets so that might be a reason why so many people talk about bad smells and games since in the US that's a nice source. also depending on a lot one buys, if almost everything is cib and looks in nice shape you should be just fine.

Also usually excellent upwards condition games have a nice smell because they have almost never been used, or they have been used with care.

lol I much prefer new game smell, and in all honesty I got really upset when I first opened the Nintendo switch games. they really don't have a new game smell to them, which is technically a good thing as the cellophane they use should be more stable for long term sealed storage.

I've actually heard a rumor about the new Swtich carts being made to intentionally taste really bad so that kids won't put them in their mouths. I wonder if that's true.

They used a bittering agent in the carts. If you have an animal that chews you've probably used something very similar before

To me, nothing will ever beat the smell of a new game. The fresh plastic of the box, the straight new manuals, but most of all just the exciting feeling of having a brand new title ready to play. Seriously, I don't know whether this is weird, but everytime I get a new game I just have to take a quick whiff of the box to get that 'I have a new game and it'll be awesome' feeling.
