Title: Favorite cartoons growing up?
Post by: kypherion on February 24, 2019, 09:14:44 pm
unfortunately I'm a bit younger, so I never got the cool cartoons like "He-Man!" or the old Thundercats. I was always more of a "Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy", "Courage the Cowardly Dog", "Codename Kids Next Door" guy. Those were my favorites in particular, what were your favorite cartoons?

The most early stuff I grew up on was like the Transformers and GIJOE movies, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

After that, a lot of what I watched was basically the "Disney Afternoon", so Ducktales, Tailspin, Darkwing Duck, etc...

Then it would be like Nickolodeon shows, so Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, all that stuff...

And after that it would be mostly Cartoon Network, so Dexter's Lab, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Powerpuff Girls, and then like Toonami for my anime stuff.

And there are others like the Batman Animated series among others strewn about.

1992 - 1998: The Nickelodeon Years: During this time nearly all the cartoons I watched were cartoons were Nichelodeon shows. If there was a Nicktoon released during this time period, I watched it an likely enjoyed it. My favorites from this era that I enjoyed the most were Rugrats, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, and Hey Arnold! I also watched and loved a ton of non-cartoon shows on Nick during this time, but those are for another thread. Also worth note is The Simpsons which was obviously not on Nickelodeon, but I loved this show and watched it nearly every evening during the week. This was during The Golden Age of The Simpsons and I feel privileged to have been able to see the episodes released during this time as they were brand new.

1997 - 2002: The Cartoon Network and Toonami years: My parents divorced in 1997 and the house my dad was staying at right afterwards had premium cable which is something I never had growing up. One of those channels was Cartoon Network, which was probably one of the greatest things I ever found out about as a kid. During this time I discovered Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, as well as The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest. I loved these shows so much, but what these years are remembered for even more was the Toonami block in the evening. It became my gateway into Anime and I obsessed over its lineup, never missing it every night after school. My favorites were DBZ, Gundam Wing and 8th MS Team, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo and Universe, and Cowboy Bebop. Also during this time i got into more adult oriented cartoons like South Park and Family Guy, both shows I still love to this day.

This is slightly off topic, but I went down a 90's cartoon show hole and ended up remembering some more recent stuff and I'm super bummed they canceled Motorcity lol It has nothing to do with childhoods, unless you are like...7...but here's this great show with music by Brendon Small (Metalocalypse), involving Titmouse who made stuff like Metalocalypse, and it had good action, humor, and Mark Hamill playing the villain, and they canceled it.  One of those shows I found online as it was going and it was so good lol I think if it had been on Cartoon Network instead of Disney, it might've had a longer life.

I was spoiled when it comes to cartoons, so I seriously could sit here listing names and never stop. So instead, I'll give you a top 10 of the cartoons that I loved watching growing up whose theme songs are still to this day stuck in my head.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2. Thundercats
3. Animaniacs
4. Freakazoid!
5. Pinky and the Brain
6. DuckTales
7. Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers
8. Tiny Toons
9. SWAT Kats
10. X-Men

This will sound cliché, but the 80s and 90s were the best - simply put, a treasure trove; there's an overabundance of amazing shows that have more than stood the test of time. And the same could be said for the sticoms of that era.

EDIT: You know what, take out Rocko's Modern Life; I was doing some shores and started humming the X-Men animated series' theme song. I've no clue how in the actual hell I forgot to mention it. Same with Spider-Man.

When I was a kid, we didn't have cable TV, so I only got to watch the cartoons on network TV. Certainly there were a lot of them. And I still remember being excited to sleep over at other people's houses that did have cable on a Friday night so I could watch USA Cartoon Express!

Geez. Apparently I’m the old man in here.
I grew up on He-Man, Transformers, GIJoe, MASK, Pac-Man, Dungeons & Dragons, Danger Mouse...there were so many great shows.

Later there was the Disney Afternoon stuff like Gummi Bears, Ducktales, etc.

I enjoyed shows like X-Men, Batman TAS, Gargoyles, and Animaniacs very much, but I was in high school at that point :p

Man, I used to have all the action figures for many of these series, too. Damn my childhood ignorance, I could have those figures in display right now...or even sold some.

We had nearly identical experiences, haha.

I also watched the Looney Tunes cartoons a ton back when the Bugs Bunny Road Runner show was on.

I haven’t noticed many of the older classics on TV over the last decade or so. Reruns of Flintstones, Jetsons, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, and more used to be on TV all the time, even in the 80’s. My 6-year-old twins know nothing of Looney Tunes, and that makes me sad. They have watched a little of Tom & Jerry and classic Pink Panther, though. Out of my DVD collection I’ve shown them He-Man, MASK, and Transformers.

The edds. Can't believe no one has mentioned this.

Catchy theme song.

when i was little i enjoyed watching cartoons from the 1940's to the 1990's.

Mighty Mouse was the cheesenit. And the Superman shorts by Max Fleischer were ahead of its time.

Also, I find your avatar quite appropriate to the topic at hand, pacgamer89. Loved the Centurions growing up.

You hit 2 of my favorites.  I assume we might be in the same age group :)

I grew up on the Powerpuff girls, courage, grim adventures of billy and mandy, ed, edward and also eduardo, and dexter's labratory,  scooby doo in my real young years.

On the nickelodeon spectrum, I binged Spongebob, Jimmy Nuetron and Timmy Turn Fairly Odd Parents.

My top 5 favorite cartoons growing up

This list will definitely differ from all time because as a teen I began to like Family Guy and South Park but i'm talking soley little kid era here :D

1. Spongebob Rectangular Prism Pants

(https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNDUwNjBkMmUtZjM2My00NmM4LTlmOWQtNWE5YTdmN2Y2MTgxXkEyXkFqcGdeQXRyYW5zY29kZS13b3JrZmxvdw@@._V1_UX477_CR0,0,477,268_AL_.jpg)

Spongebob defined my childhood and taught me more than any teacher. It represented life struggles, life lessons, complex intricate dry humor along with a cast of characters that is rivaled by almost no other show.  In it's prime (seasons 1-8) it may very well be the greatest cartoon ever made. It's simply god tier in a sense it can entertain any age group.  As an adult I can still put on the spongebob seasons and I always find a new joke I always missed before.  It's complex, it's unique and it has incredible stories.

2. The Simpsons

(https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA0YWE3ZDUtMzE3ZC00NzA2LTkyNmItZDIzOWM3MDg4MTA4XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzU1NzE3NTg@._V1_CR0,45,480,270_AL_UX477_CR0,0,477,268_AL_.jpg)

Like I said earlier, I hit my full Simpsons stride at around 10-12. And might not have fully become a fanatic as a young kid,  But I was always a huge fan and always allowed to watch it. I had all the games and figures.  No show was as consistent and balanced in it's innovations in the adult cartoon genre.  And although it was a little risky for parents to allow young kids to watch, most adults can find pure blissful humor disguised as real life issues that are both relatable and amusing due to the hyperbole the show uses to convey the messages interlaced within the story telling.  The writers for the Simpsons were truly on another level and paved the way.

3. Fairly Odd Parents

(https://da4pli3l5vc0d.cloudfront.net/66/7a/667ab6a4c185a43671f6994a6ab9b58fd203b871/w=414,h=303,crop=auto/?sig=88c390c980d4fa53d37ef16fbdc53ec3dfbad7d9fa626949827b76ae37140ac3&app=powerplay)

I just sat for a minute wondering who I could possibly put at the 3rd spot between Courage, Jimmy Nuetron ect...  it's so hard :).  But for some reason when I was a kid I loved this show most.  Fairly Odd Parents was just awesome to me as a kid.  It was good until the baby came along and it started getting played.  The concept of a boy who can have any wish was also fun to watch.   One major flaw was the "fairy rule book" which was silly because it stopped Timmy Turner from bringing pac back to life :(

Jimmy Neutron

Jimmy Nuetron was educational, funny and also had complex characters and plot telling.  I rememeber liking it fondly although it's been so long since I've watched it :)

Grim Adventures of Robert and Melinda

I always loved the art style and creepy vibe of the villains, plot and characters of GAOBAM.  I loved the character dynamic and it was definitely a unique show and stood out among all the amazing shows.  Although if I thought more Powerpuff girls or Courage would probably win this spot :)

It's so hard to pick.  So many amazing childhood classics. :D

As an Adult the list is.

1. Spongebob
2. Family Guy
3. Simpsons
4. South Park
5. Fairy Odd Parents

I was born in 1984, so I took in a ton of late '80s though '90s stuff.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! was an early favorite. I was obsessed with Nintendo and to me Lou Albano played the perfect Mario. They had wacky live action skits mixed with animated segments. On Fridays it became an animated Legend of Zelda show too!

Lots of others too:

Heathcliff
Dennis the Menace
Inspector Gadget
Transformers
GI Joe
TMNT
Mega Man animated series
Duck Tales
Goof Troop
Animaniacs
old Looney Tunes and Disney shorts
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1/2
Batman Animated Series
The Simpsons

Probably lots of others I'm forgetting  ;D

I seen some of mostly all  the cartoons already listed by others, in short I seen a ton of different cartoons, I seen just about every single "The Simpsons" cartoon ever made I think. but I quit watching "The Simpsons when every single episode on TV was the same thing over and over.

I used to watch Dragon Ball Z every day after school. Mostly during the cartoon network 1st Freza era on cartoon network. then the Cell era came. But I stopped watching DBZ when they started showing the bue or boo episodes. on weekends on cartoon network cable channel.

My least favorite Dragon Ball Z villain is boo, that pink blob. fighting a pink blob I thought was too immature to watch. I think it was the first episode boo came a villain on I stopped watching for a long time.

I was born in the late 1980's, and in my younger years it was watching mostly Disney movies, (Mostly cartoons) But even at a young age I didn't like the singing events of the Disney cartoons. Still don't understand why they were in just about every single Disney cartoon ever made.

Does anyone not like most the singing events in Disney cartoon movies or am I the only one? I did like all the lion king though
