Title: Playstation Showcase - Summer Game Fest
Post by: telekill on May 14, 2023, 10:56:22 am
Updated this thread to include the Playstation showcase set for Wed the 24th. I expect much to be shown. Rumors are already swirling. Now the question is... what do they have up their sleeves? Mortal Kombat 1 was already announced, so that's not going to be a surprise there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summer Game Gest is coming upon us and seems to have officially replaced E3. Gone are the days of live shows that fans could attend and try their hands at new software and upcoming hardware. Gone are the days of free gaming swag, the geeking out among peers, and the booth babes. Now... we have only digital events that feel cold and hollow but at least we can still get some interesting announcements... assuming the industry pulls out of a nose dive.

You can check out the schedule on their site but I'll post the main times below the link:

https://www.summergamefest.com/

June 8th -
3pm ET - Main showcase
5pm ET - Indie Dev showcase

June 11th -
1pm ET - Xbox showcase / Starfield Direct after

June 12th -
1pm ET - Ubisoft showcase

I assume more times will be added as we get closer given all the publishers/developers that will be attending:

Seeing some pretty big possibilities that could come to this show, but honestly, my expectations are still really low given the last few years of what the industry has had to offer. What's possible though? What would be my dream announcements that would shoot a spark of excitement up my spine?

 - Uncharted continuation (Playstation will be present)
 - Tomb Raider (Amazon will be present)
 - Indiana Jones (Microsoft will be present)
 - Mass Effect 5 (EA will be present)
 - Shenmue 4 (Sega will be present)
 - Dino Crisis reboot (Capcom will be present)

Now... do I expect any of the above to be shown? It's surely possible, but no. I have zero expectations for this show. And to point out the big name not present, at least for now, I didn't see Nintendo's logo. I expect they'll have their own direct separate from this and the one thing I really want from them at this point... Zelda Twilight Princess HD on Switch. That's truly the only I would care to see from them.

So what are your expectations and hopes? Anything that you're hoping finally gets announced or that you'll see an update on?

I don't really have any expectations or predictions, just hope to see some cool new games.

I thought Geoff mentioned having an in-person aspect to Summer Game Fest this year?

If rumors are to be believed it seems like Sony is finally set to have a showing for their own games sometime in the next week or two.

What I want from Ubisoft are actual releases of both XDefiant and The Division Heartland.

I'm guessing the Mortal Kombat reveal could be at this event since it's Geoff's show and the Game Awards was where the last one was revealed, so that's something.  At this point, there's not much I can anticipate or hope for, I feel like with Capcom I'd like to see something like a Dino Crisis reboot, or most likely would be something showing off the Resident Evil 4 Remake DLC.  A Mega Man Legends Collection with some QoL updates would be great (Controls and such).

Otherwise I'm just hoping to be surprised, if I can get one dope new surprise game to excite me, that's all I ask for.  If I had to go for like...Hail Mary hope, it would be a brand new Banjo-Kazooie, I feel like that's the only thing Xbox could do to get me interested in what they have to offer.

MK1 announced and Playstation showcase announced for next Wed, the 24th. Fingers crossed for something good.

In my personal world, this would be the show -

60 minute show.
First 10 minutes of basic new stuff that is ehhh.
Next 10 minutes is FFXVI.
Followed by FFVII Remake.
Stellar Blade.
MK1 with a showing of Johnny Cage and (hopefully) Kano.
Granblue Fantasy ReLink gameplay and release window.

Close out with a new game that hasn't been mentioned before.

Just remembered the game Convallaria that Sony is publishing. It'd be nice to see that be ready for release and hopefully for free since it seems like that type of game. A second look at Wolverine would be cool too.

An announcement of the June PS Plus Essential lineup would be nice if they have something big. I'm not sure what it could be though because a lot of their titles lately seem like they wouldn't want to give up sales like Spider-Man (the remaster of the first game is finally getting a standalone release), Miles Morales has the new movie releasing so that is likely to boost sales of the game, The Last of Us is a huge show now so giving out the second game for free would be silly and both Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding have PS5 releases with additional content. So maybe the remake of Demon's Souls?

Well my previous post was before the actual MK1 reveal, but I still think MK will be at the Playstation show with proper gameplay.  A far left field reveal for me at this show would be Capcom doing Monster Hunter World 2, like that's abit of a longshot, but after not really getting into Rise as much as I wanted, I'm so eager for a World 2 announcement.  Final Fantasy VII Rebirth stuff would also be awesome as I'm looking forward to FF16, but I sorta feel like they'll hold off on FF7 Rebirth for this show.

And of course, as always, give me Bloodborne.  At this point I feel it would be a remake or remaster if they put it out, so they can have it available on PC too, but just give it to me, I need it.

The first half didn't do anything for me really, but that midpoint reveal of Metal Gear Solid 3 getting a remake along with a MGS1, 2, and 3 collection is definitely what I wanted to see, so that's great.  Dragon's Dogma 2 gameplay was kinda neat, but I never got too far into the first game, so I'm not big on the sequel in particular.

Also just realized that the MGS collection is "Volume 1", so they are finally doing what I wanted and putting the games back out in a collection, so likely going to get the handheld stuff and then MGS4, meaning I can replay the mainline games very easily.

And ending on the one game I was expecting, Spider-Man 2.  Looks great, gonna be a ton of fun.  The showcase didn't do a lot for me in particular, it was mostly just Metal Gear and Spider-Man 2.

Haven's Fairgame is literally Creative Assembly's Hyenas with a bit of Watch Dogs 2.

Helldivers 2 would've been cooler if it looked like the start of the trailer. I like that it isn't top down.

Sword of the Sea seems to just be a mix of what they've done previously.

How does Cat Quest 3 have enough clout to be here or even at a normal State of Play?

Foamstars looks awesome!!! (Please be free.)

I think I'm officially interested in The Plucky Squire even though it's annoying it's not on PS4 but is on Switch..

Teardown is kind of interesting but the voxel look isn't.

Dang, I was really interested in the Metal Gear Solid trailer until it turned into Metal Gear Solid.

Towers of Aghasba looks like if Tears of the Kingdom was good.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is so Assassin's Creed. I realize that's the point of this game in particular but it's funny how hard they drive that point home.

Revenant Hill has the same cat design as Night in the Woods and same publisher. Weird.

Wow a dedicated Remote Play device!! Who cares?

Spider-Man 2 secretly a movie tie-in game with the Kraven the Hunter movie supposed to release this October. Looks very cool.

This was supposed to give us a look at Sony IP and what we got on the front was Spider-Man 2, a carbon copy of Hyenas, a sequel to a game that only resonated on PC and a generic space game called Concord that showed nothing and is day and date with PC. Bungie's Marathon I guess too but I believe they said their games will remain multiplatform and they aren't technically a PlayStation studio. This was just a long State of Play. The best game Foamstars is on PS4. Where are the reasons to buy a PS5 for people like me still on the fence? Xbox must be feeling great going into their show.

Awful showing.

Xbox must be feeling great going into their show.

Xbox is hardly in a great spot here, especially after the Redfall disaster.  I also want them to have a great showing, but other than like Starfield, what else is there to be even that interested in? I'm also not very hype for the game, so they do have to do a lot to get me excited at their show.

Honestly, wasn't that much of interest for me, the main event was Metal Gear Solid's Master Collection! I don't care either way for a Remake of MGS3 - Like most remakes I feel it as an indulgence. However, with the release of the Master Collection, I can play the original ported and upscaled for modern displays - Which is ALL I WANT!!! I keep saying this, give me an upscaled port with widescreen support, I don't need a Triple-A developed remake. I wish other Remakes offered the original in a HD Collection like this - Hopefully Silent Hill can follow by this example! Oh and as soon as i saw The Ends Parrot I knew what it was!

I didn't watch the Final Fantasy XVI trailer as I've already Pre-ordered and don't want any spoilers.

Spider-Man 2 looks decent, I played the other 2 games recently which I did enjoy but I'm not the biggest Comicbook fan so I'll be holding off.

Overall pretty underwhelming maybe other stuff will appear in the Summer Games Fest later.

Sony just lowered the bar so low for them that it shouldn't be hard to surpass this.

Phantom Blade 0 looks good. Although, it seems like we have a lot of type of these kinds of games, and it's not something I'd likely play.

Sword of the Sea may be okay. But from what was shown, it looks like a combination of Journey and Abzû.

I'll definitely be picking up Neva, another emotional game from the creators of Gris.

Foamstars seems okay, but if I want to play anything like this, Splatoon already exists. It could bring a nice change to that type of gameplay, though.

The Plucky Squire continues to impress me with new trailers.

I'll also be getting Revenant Hill, from the creators of Night in the Woods. Not much was shown, so I'm curious if it's in the same world as its predecessor.

I've not played any other games in its series, but Dragon's Dogma looks good. It's more than likely not a game I'd play, though.

I feel as if I'll never need to watch anything related to Spider-Man again.

Good thing you own a Switch.

Definitely agree.

This is is Xbox, they've not been doing super great really.  They have stuff in the wings with the companies they've been buying and such, but we are only just getting to that point still.  We'll see though, I don't want any company to do bad, or flop, more games I like is great (A part of me is hoping to see Banjo-Kazooie return some day), but unless they got some bangers lined up that is more than just Starfield, they could kinda suffer the same fate of the Sony showcase.

This was probably the worst Playstation showcase I've ever seen and I've been in the PS camp since they started. Almost nothing new shown and what was new was lackluster. I feel this entire showcase was to reveal the Wii-U rip-off device shown near the end along with PS brand earbuds. Ladifreak'n da.

They had so little to show from their first party studios that they added the filler of a new trailer for the Gran Turismo MOVIE!

It was absolutely pathetic after dealing with nearly 2 years of silence from them.

There are a select few titles I'm waiting for like Mass Effect 5 and Instinction. Once those titles release, I'm done paying attention to modern gaming.

This image Xbox released on Twitter showing everything from the PlayStation Showcase that will be on Xbox is pretty funny.

I was going to post that too lol It does really show the issues with the showcase when so much of it was multi-platform.  While I don't have high hopes for Xbox, I'm curious if they are gonna try and change up whatever they got planned to show off seeing the reaction to this showcase.  All these Sony players are looking at this showcase going "What here is justifying my PS5 purchase?" and Sony went "Spider-Man 2, stuff on a headset that costs an extra 500 dollars, a likely expensive remote play device, and likely expensive earbuds."

They didn't even do a good job selling PS VR2. Crossfire IP being featured after the abysmal CrossfireX seems like scraping the bottom of the barrel to me. Firewall Ultra is the only PS VR2 Sony published game announced and that wasn't even there. Meta has a VR showcase coming up which will probably have future PS VR2 games but they also seem to like locking up exclusives.

In my opinion, MGS3 is the greatest game ever made, period. So, I'll have to agree with you there.

And I must have been the only person on the planet who felt pretty disturbed seeing that weird little parrot with unnaturally short wings acting like a predator and feeding on that (probably poisonous) tree frog... I used to see wild parrots and macaws flying around everyday in my hometown, but I've never seen or heard of one who ate a frog!

After the abysmal Playstation showing last week, it's up to the Summer Game Fest on June 8th to give me any kind of hope for the future of gaming, both short and long term. All of the games I'm really looking forward too (Mass Effect 5, Instinction, Tomb Raider, etc.) are little better than vaporware until we see more on them. They have no solid release dates and more than likely won't release until late 2024 at the earliest.

I took a look on the Switch side of things since Zelda released and there's nothing on that end either for me. Here's what I'm wanting to play for the rest of the year:

 - Sonic Origins Plus (PS5) -- planning to buy PS5 physical
 - Immortals of Aveum (PS5) -- Black Friday purchase ($70 is steep for a new IP)

I'm hoping part 2 of FF7 Remake is shown at Game Fest with a December 2023 release date, but I have my doubts. 10 days till some hope is regained or disappointment continues.

I got to it late, but sounds like it's already off to a better start by having lots of gameplay and such.  I missed the MK1 gameplay reveal, will go back to it, but that and I thought Sonic Superstars seemed neat.  Like I've said before I'm not the biggest fan of classic Sonic gameplay, but there seems like some fun stuff with this one.  Kinda hoping you can maybe pull the camera back abit, would be a nice feature.

Oh geez, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 full reveal.  Awesome!

Sonic Superstars looks alright but $60 is pretty funny after Sonic Mania.

I expected a Sand Land game and it looks decent.

Space Marine 2 still looking good.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is just Saber's World War Z game again.

Palworld seems to have gotten a lot nicer looking.

"Speaking of Final Fantasy.. DoorDash" was pretty funny from Geoff.

Warzone 2.0 new locations has me somewhat interested.

I'll probably watch Twisted Metal.

I want to play the new season of Fortnite now!! 15-ish more hours.

While there wasn't tons of stuff I was excited for that I saw there, this was definitely an overall better show than the Playstation showcase as it just had way more gameplay stuff to show off.  Mortal Kombat 1 looks sick and I was not expecting them to show off Final Fantasy VII Rebirth here, which I'm super excited for.  Going back to multi-discs for systems apparently lol  That was mostly it for me unless I missed something.

 - MK1 gameplay

I wonder how many live viewers regret watching Summer Game Fest 2023. What an abysmally boring showcase.

I watched the trailers uploaded by The Game Awards's YouTube Channel—there was nothing new shown of any interest of mine. Regarding general interest for newly-announced projects? I fail to see what it could be for. Sand Land is perhaps the only new game worth highlighting only for longtime fans of the manga.

Hellskate on Day of the Devs just saved the day. Looks amazing.

I'm not interested in sitting through the entire Day of the Devs showcase, but there may be some promising games shown. If any individual trailers get published, I may watch those.

After some reflection, it seems odd to me that both showcases had little of interest to me. The only game reveal that raised my eyebrow was Sonic and that's because I know my son will love it. Everything else that had any interest, and honestly, not much interest, were games we already knew about. I got more excited for the Usagi DLC announcement for Shredder's Revenge a couple days ago, then anything shown at either of the showcases.

I enjoyed Devolver's presentation a lot and they even mentioned Gex alongside some other irrelevant platformer characters like Aero the Acro-Bat.

As far as game announcements go Shadows of the Damned: Remastered is all I found interesting but Human Fall Flat 2 and Baby Steps will probably be huge with YouTube let's plays.

That was a very U shaped presentation in terms of my personal enjoyment; MK1 has me so hyped I might just buy it day 1 even though it'll get a butt load of DLC and the inevitable "Ultimate" version in a couple of years once all the DLC has been released. Then there was the FF7:Rebirth trailer that looked incredible! Having even two games that get me this excited from one of these presentations is a total novelty these past 4 or 5 years, so I was very pleased overall with the Summer Games Fest.

On a side note, has anyone heard LRG doing their E3ish presentation anytime soon?

Looking again over everything shown, Under the Waves actually looks interesting. Apparently it's being published by Quantic Dream (Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, etc). Still waiting for them to announce a wizard game based on their tech demo though.

I'd be interested in seeing gameplay of South of Midnight.

Dungeons of Hinterberg looked alright.

Maybe PC Gaming Show will deliver.

Xbox Showcase was today.  Unfortunately, very little for me here.  I wanted to be more interested in Star Wars: Outlaw, but it's an Ubisoft game, who knows what that'll be like.  Starfield could be okay, but it lacks the character of Fallout to me and I want to see how it turns out at launch for obvious reasons.  Honestly, the only things that interested were Jusant and Dungeons of Hinterberg, for some reason those games had a unique appeal to me and it's nice when more smallscale games can do that for me.

Otherwise, this wasn't really any better than the Playstation showcase for me personally.  Skipping on the Starfield showcase, as I am struggling to care about the game.  Maybe that could actually build up interest, but I'll wait for the VOD so I can just skim through it.  I feel if I had a new PC that could take advantage of the game, I'd muster up a little more interest, but with my PC seeing better days and likely to struggle abit, especially if it has launch issues, I'm just not as huge for it, and with no Xbox, I can't play it on console anyways.  Who knows, maybe as I see more, see uncut, unguided, gameplay stuff, that'll change my view on the game.

Wait... did the Xbox show still not have Indiana Jones even with the new movie coming out?  ???

I'm wondering if that game is vaporware.

Oh, Jusant, one of the two games that perked me up at the show as being kinda interesting, is also on PS5, so the only Xbox exclusive that interested me at the show, was Dungeons of Hinterberg lol Not super exciting.

Also I didn't realize it, but it's the 25th anniversary of Banjo-Kazooie this month and they did nothing for it, which is very sad.  I'd take anything at this point.  Sequel, remake, remaster, or just getting easier access to the HD remasters of the game, which is stuck on Xbox consoles currently, but would be great to have on PC.  Like I just need to be able to play Rare Replay on PC, that would be so nice lol

Stampede: Racing Royale looks like a decent free to play game.

Parcel Corps would have me more excited if Bomb Rush Cyberfunk didn't also have bikes.

Atomic Picnic looked okay.

My Friendly Neighborhood looked interesting, apparently it already had its run on YouTube without me noticing.

Bloomtown looked fine.

I didn't watch the PC Gaming Show, but glancing at some stuff, there were  a few interesting games.

Road to Vostok - Seems like a mix of STALKER and Escape from Tarkov, though I think it's a singleplayer experience

Chimera - From the devs who made Green Hell, they are doing a scifi survival game in a similar vein, which could be cool, I liked Green Hell.

*EDIT*
Skimmed through the generally more important bits of the Starfield Direct and wasn't really that blown away.  Hearing about there being a 1,000 worlds is actually a massive negative for the game, because it means a lot of it is probably just procedurally generated stuff like No Man's Sky and is mostly just gonna be pointless fluff.  There will be crafted worlds and some other stuff, but no one needs a 1,000 worlds.  Aspects like that and the kinda bland aesthetics just don't do much for me.  That part isn't bad, but it feels kinda lacking compared to Elder Scrolls and Fallout.  They showed off a number of space suits, and they are just...space suits.  Guess just a fault of their choice to go for a more realistic tone to things.  Maybe there will be more to it, but being that this was the big thing to hype it up, I wasn't drawn in.

If I had to point out something decent, the ship customization looked pretty dope, that was certainly a highlight.  I'm sure I'd like the game in general, it's the same sorta Fallout/Elder Scrolls setup, which I can get lost in, but I just don't have the hype.  Maybe down the road after it's out and people have put it through the ringer, I can see what I think about it, but I'll probably pass on it when it comes out.  I mean, it's a Bethesda game too, things probably gonna filled to the gills with bugs that'll need to be cleaned up lol

Ubisoft starting now and Capcom later today.

Ubisoft cancelled the PS4 version of my most anticipated game, XDefiant.

Jet Set Radio will be in their game Roller Champions.

Rayman will be in Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope DLC.

Riders Republic is adding skateboarding.

I didn't watch the Ubisoft event, but the only thing for me was the Star Wars: Outlaw gameplay stuff.  I am very interested being a Star Wars game not about Jedi, and it's open world for Star Wars which is neat, but it's also an Ubisoft open world game and I think I heard it's made by the Division team, so it has me VERY cautious.  I want it to be good, but Ubisoft open world games have been rough for so long.  I stopped caring about their Far Cry games with the 5th one, Assassin's Creed has hit peak open world bloat, I never really liked the Division, but that's more of a gameplay reason for that, so hopefully they handled this one differently, but we'll see.

Looking forward to the Capcom event, I'm not expecting anything huge, mostly just hoping to see the Resident Evil 4 DLC, maybe a new Mega Man collection for Legends, and I guess my one hope would be Monster Hunter World 2, but that might be too early for that with Rise just finishing up this month I believe.

*EDIT*
Bah, nothing at the Capcom show for me, just turned it off at Dragon's Dogma 2 since they said that was the last game.  Kind of a bummer, nothing new, mostly just a showcase to recap stuff and a delay for that Pragmata game, though they did show off a tiny bit of gameplay and it's an action game with you carrying a kid around on your back.  I thought Resident Evil 4 DLC was a given, but I guess they aren't releasing it anytime soon.

This has been an absolutely atrocious year for getting me hyped for gaming. Great for the wallet. Horrible for my hobby. 90% sure now that PS5 will be my last system.

The only things that got me excited at the XBOX showcase were all the Atlus games (which are coming to Playstation also) and the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC. I was not a fan of CP2077's ending so it's nice to see this is potentially a way of fixing it.

I've been hyped for several games announced since the Playstation showcase, but the impending future of no physical media is what is going to drive me away for good. Until that happens, I'll enjoy what few new game announcements there are that get me hyped.

Here is everything announced since the Playstation Showcase up the the Ubisoft conference today that I'm hyped about so far. I'm splitting the hype into 3 categories since some of these games I'm significantly more excited about than others.

Extreme Hype
-Mortal Kombat 1
-Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
-Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Moderate Hype
-Phantom Blade 0
-Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
-Metaphor Re Fantazio
-Persona 3 Reload

Interested in, but not necessarily hyped
-Sonic Superstars
-Star Wars Outlaws

Games that have been announced for a while that I'm hyped about
-Armored Core 6
-Final Fantasy XVI

While I know isn't E3, it feels enough like it to where I've been very content with the schedule of "conferences" that have been happening. All that's missing is Nintendo to announce a Direct before the end of the week and I'll be completely satisfied. I don't think I've had this many games I've been excited about since E3 2016 or 2017. As I said in a previous post, I would like to enjoy modern gaming as much as possible before they go all digital and it won't matter how cool a game looks since I won't be paying anywhere close to full price for it when it comes out.

Could you elaborate on this? I assume you're already a fan of the world so that probably helps?

I'd be interested in seeing gameplay of South of Midnight.

Likewise. Not only is the art direction fantastic, but I adore the Southern gothic tone it takes. It's reported to be a third-person action-adventure game, so it's certainly something that could be something I'd enjoy playing.

Oh, Jusant, one of the two games that perked me up at the show as being kinda interesting

Initially, I thought Jusant looked interesting too. But then I thought, "Do I really want to play an entire game based off of climbing mechanics from games such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima?" I probably don't, so hopefully there's more to Jusant than what the trailer shows.

Not sure how this is even possible. Probably the best year in gaming in the last 10 years or so.
***3*** Legend of heroes/Trails games
Ys X announcement/gameplay
Diablo IV and Baldur's gate 3
Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters got released.
Granblue fantasy getting a release timeframe.
The 3 biggest fighting franchises, Mortal Kombat, Street fighter, and Tekken all getting a new release.
Final fantasy VII and XVI both getting a release.
Dragon quest getting another console release.
Spider-man 2 (and possibly Wolverine) soon.
Persona 3 and P5 Tactics plus screenshots of Project ReFantasy (Metaphor: ReFantazio)

I couldn't even imagine a better year.

I don't generally like JRPG or similar games. Never been into anime either. The one exception, FF7 Remake, we knew was coming last year. MK1 was nice but I just bought MK11. I won't get around to MK1 until a Komplete edition releases. We knew of Tekken last year as well. Never played Dragon's Dogma or Baulder's Gate.

Immortals of Aveum has potential but I'm not spending $70 on a new IP.

The most exciting announcement in the last couple weeks for me was Usagi being added to TMNT Shredders Revenge. I was hoping for one... just one of the following...

 - Uncharted continuation
 - Dino Crisis reboot/Remake
 - Instinction info
 - Mass Effect 5 info
 - New Tomb Raider info
 - Shenmue continuation (obvious long shot)
 - Witcher info
 - Last Ronin info
 - Indiana Jones info
 - Warhawk (PS3) remaster
 - Twisted Metal game (not that horrible show teaser)
 - Something to excite me I hadn't thought of...

One thing off that list and I got jack. That's been the theme for the PS5 gen. A whole lot of potential squandered.

I'm fine with it just being about the climbing, it seemed really chill to me, but I assume it'll have more stuff with puzzles and other interactions to mix up the experience.

I am. I loved the first movie and enjoyed the 2nd quite a bit. Looks like a fun, semi-open world Avatar game where you get to play as a Na'vi, get mounts, and explore more of the lore and world of Pandora. I'm actually surprised I'm as excited as I am about it considering I'm general not a fan of Ubisoft games, but it just looks so cool!

Did you play the PS3/360 Avatar game also made by Ubisoft?

Instinction got a new trailer.

I apparently missed it as it wasn't part of the main show. Still not expecting that one to release for another year or two.

Appreciate the heads up.
