Modern Video Games / Re: Leaked Life is Strange prequel

Few things I picked up around the net...  Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

The prequel involved Chloe and Rachel and does NOT involve the time-reversal aspect.  That kind of worries me because it might end up like a Telltale game... which can be fun, sure - but may be more of a cash-in if not done right.

Dontnod is NOT doing the prequel but is instead secretly working on a true sequel.  If true, that's really exciting!  I'd love to see where the story goes with Maxine.  I might skip the prequel and wait for this one.

Sorry I can't source this and I'm too lazy to google right now :)

Wow - $32 for a game disc that is known to be buggy, laggy and almost unplayable without patching.  Truly tacky.

I'll just pretend that everyone who bought the LRG release just wanted to own a physical copy (like I do with my games) but missed the SRG release.  I know there are some variant collectors that want and have both, and I think those people are silly :P~~

I totally appreciate the nostalgia of playing your old console, but I would suggest simply buying an original NES console.  However, I'm not sure if they use the same power supply so I would hate to steer you the wrong way (if the console you were to buy doesn't come with one).  But that way you could have your composite out and save the wear and tear on your top loader.

Generally speaking - RF was great when we were kids (we didn't know any better!), but the signal is so terribly piss-poor that you'll soon begin to hate it.  I highly, highly recommend doing just about anything to avoid using RF at all in your setup.

If you really want the best there is, get a modder to mod your NES with a NESRGB board -> Framemeister upscaler -> HDMI -> HDTV.  Warning: you will need new pants after you see how beautiful it is.

Thanks kashell - I suppose I didn't explain well so let me backpedal a bit :)  You made me remember that there is a Sesame Street Collectors' Edition "Twin Pack" for PS1 that has 2 Elmo games and it has the same white label artwork as the other PS1 Collectors Editions that have 3 games.

I'm looking for multi-volume collections that came in a slipcase to hold them.  For PS2 I've only seen sets of 3, like the GTA Trilogy.  But if there are collector's editions with 2 or 4 or more, I'd like to know about those too!

If it makes you happy to make something physical for your digital games, nothing wrong with that I suppose but I have to admit I think it's rather dumb.  Your time, money and shelf space could be much better utilized.  Why not print up artwork inserts to put in DVD cases for every movie you've downloaded?

I read about the PS3 release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that came in a regular PS3 case with artwork, but no disc - only a download code.  Some people were paying top dollar (above digital price) for sealed copies just to have something to put on the shelf!  I don't like to use the phrase smh, but that's about all I can come up with.

smh

Strafe (ps4) special reserve variant cover - $31.99

I just wanted to verify this.  Was the LRG release of Strafe actually priced at $31.99 when it went up for sale?  If so, that's ridiculous since the SRG version was only $20 - a $12 markup for a cover variant!

Awesome, thanks for the responses!  I'll update my original post to make it easy for anyone who finds the thread in the future.

pzeke - there are a number of anthologies like AoF you mentioned, but I was looking for only those that came in sets of 3 with a slipcase.

It's kind of an unfair question considering the high production values of Arkham Asylum and all the titles after.

Maybe it would be better ask: Batman or Simpsons from NES through PS1 eras?  If that were the case, I could go either way because both have good and bad.  I'll play Simpsons arcade any day!  I'm a sucker for those 4p beat-em-ups.

Does anyone know of a complete list of US PS2 collections that (typically) came in sets of 3 with a slipcase (ie, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy)?  I have a few and would like to seek out more, but unlike PS1 sets that came packaged as "Collectors' Edition" with the customized (white label?) artwork (ie Spyro), most of the PS2 collections were not named all the same and can slip under the radar.  For instance, I recently picked up Pac-Man Power Pack which sounds like it could be anything.

Here are the one's I've found so far, so please let me know if you know of more or can link to a complete list.  Thanks!

Burnout Anthology
Crash Bandicoot Action Pack
Devil May Cry: 5th Anniversary Collection
Dragon Ball Z Trilogy
ESA Foundation Compilation Set
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy
Harry Potter Collection
Hitman Trilogy
Medal of Honor Collection
Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection
Mortal Kombat: Kollection
Namco Classic Fighter Collection
Naruto Ultimate Collection
Need for Speed: Collector's Series
Onimusha Essentials
Pac-Man Power Pack
Resident Evil: The Essentials

Edit: clarity

Man, this thread can be painful!  I've sold, loaned or even given away so many games that I wish I had back but the one that stings most is my Phantasy Star II.  I bought it at launch (for around $75 in 1990) and sold it for change when I needed money in college.  I had the Hint Book with all the paths through the dungeons traced in pencil.  I've since re-purchased PSII loose but it's not the same.

Classic Video Games / Re: Is Yoshi a girl?

On a related note: Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2 (the pink guy with the bow that shoots eggs at you), is a boy that is very feminine. Truth, look it up.

Yea this is an interesting bit of trivia: Birdo is gaming's first trans character.  "A boy that wants to be a girl."

As for Yoshi, maybe he (they?) just has a very unusual reproduction method, like seahorses!  I've always thought of him (them?) as male.

Wow great writeup fauxshot.  I think you pretty much nailed it.  I highly enjoyed the game and I can see why some people would not give a crap about it.  Also, I'm not sure that a sequel or prequel or whateverquel will be anywhere near as good... but my fingers are crossed.  Let's hope Dontnod put the same level of talent and creativity into the next one.

I think the "unofficial" argument is pretty thin and I'm kind of baffled it would even be suggested.  They weren't bootlegs.

I got Strafe today. It's fun but choppy. I'm still unsure of my final opinion, but it needs more work.

I received mine the other day too but haven't opened it yet.  It's upsetting to read about the choppy frame rate, since there's really no reason for it.  Keep us posted on your thoughts about it!
