Title: Favorite Games of the Decade
Post by: kamikazekeeg on December 30, 2019, 08:46:16 am
Since this is all the big game talk right now, figured it couldn't hurt to do the same here, talking about our favorite games of the past decade.  Mine will be mostly in order as I am looking for lists to remember all the games of the past decade lol

- Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (2010) - Much like Brutal Legend, this is a game that felt made for me specifically.  I've long been a Guitar Hero fan since the very beginning and while it had its ups and downs, I always enjoyed it, but Warriors of Rock as the swansong of the series (Guitar Hero Live is trash), it just had kinda everything I loved with all these great metal songs (the final song is a great Megadeth song written for it) and the style is the big craziness the series was known for compared to Rock Band, but it was all extra metal in feel.  I still have my 360 primarily so I can go back and replay Warriors of Rock and Rock Band 3.

- Metro 2033 (2010) - I'm a huge fan of the STALKER game series, they had an atmosphere and tone that you just don't really see anymore and the Metro series feels very much like a spiritual successor to those games.  Dark, gritty, creepy, with good gunplay and an interesting story and setting, I've enjoyed all of the games in the series so far.

- Shovel Knight (2014) - It seems fitting that this game hit completion right at the end of this decade, because of all the indie platformers that came up in the decade, Shovel Knight did everything so well.  It's a throwback game, with it's own gameplay style and steadily released great new content for many years.  It was also one of the very first games I helped Kickstart.

- Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) - This is probably my most complicated favorite ever.  I consider it one of the best Zelda games, it did so much of what I always wanted the series to do, even though I have a lot of problems with it still, but it also has some real significant emotional attachment for me that I won't go into, so it's this oddly amazing, yet flawed, but still beloved game of mine.  This one would likely be considered my main game of the decade

- Monster Hunter World (2018) - Monster Hunter was always a series I wanted to get into as I loved the premise, but I always found the controls and general experience very clunky and it stayed that way for many years, until World showed up and cleaned up almost everything.  I've dumped nearly 400 hours into the game with Iceborne and I'm gonna keep playing it till the next one releases as I just really enjoy the experience and while it has a lot of depth, it's also very casual, where I kinda just pop back in during events, do as much as I can, and then after that I pop on a few times a week to maybe kill a monster or two and feel satisfied with just that.

There are probably a few other games I could put here, but my memory is the worst sometimes and I'll have to dig abit.  There's certainly  tons of games I really liked, but for me, a "Game of the Decade" is something I invested a ton of time into or have a real notable connection with and have gone back multiple times to play or want to play again.  Bloodborne was a notable one that I deleted from my list, but I haven't gone back to replay it and I'm not sure if I like it or Dark Souls 3 more, but we'll see as I want to replay it.

My absolute favourite game of the past decade was in fact a PC Game.

Crusader Kings II (2012)

I've poured well over 2000 hours into this Grand Strategy/Medieval Dynasty simulator. It was ridiculously well supported too, receiving one or two expansions a year for it's entire life cycle. Hell, it's STILL getting updates even though Crusader Kings III has been announced for a 2020 release. It's been made free-to-play on Steam and earning achievements in game will unlock additional content for CKIII.

The Sims 3 on PC the base game came out 10-11 years ago and some of it's expansion packs came out in 2012 as well.

I do have other games in my collection that are 2012 and newer but I can't think of any off hand I know I have Battlefield 3 and 4 and most of the Halo games,  but I never bothered to look at how old they are the news Halo game I have is Halo Reach? or Halo 4?

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
2. Shenmue 3 (2019)
3. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order (2019)
4. Doom (2016)
5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (2017)
6. Super Smash Bros Ultimate (2018)
7. Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
8. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (2010)
9. Minecraft (2011)
10. Skyrim (2011)

I played many other games from this decade, but those were the absolute standouts. I standby my statement that games have got better and better with time overall, and I really hope this trend continues. It's crazy to think we're two days away from this decade being over; it's been nothing short of incredible, life changing, and crazy in terms of video games and otherwise.

This is one of those things where I can't really bare to make a list let alone an ordered list, so I'm just going to rant about some of my favorite games of the past decade... will likely be more than 10 games

Fallout: New Vegas
I had jumped into Fallout 3 years after it had already been out, no one really tried to sell me on it, so I just never made an effort.  Once I did I fell in love and put so much time into it.  So when this game got announced I was so excited and I even preordered the Collector's Edition.  Got this game day one and threw at least a thousand hours into it over the course of the past ten years.  There are little nit picks about this entry, like the perk every other level.  But this game did so much to make what Fallout 3 was, so much better.  The world was amazing, the non-linear nature of the game, the factions, the branching story and varied endings.  The gunplay was improved over Fallout 3's almost need to rely on the VATS mechanic.  Plus the game does pretty well on subsequent playthroughs to let you skip and jump right into playing the game, which was great because Fallout 3's forced tutorial always kept me from replaying the game.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
If I'm gonna mention New Vegas, I've got to mention Skyrim, don't I?  I had played Oblivion, but it just didn't resonate with me like Fallout does.  I always loved post apocalyptic settings, but fantasy... medieval worlds never clicked with me.  I was never into D&D and such, so this game only did so much for me.  Don't get me wrong, I put hundreds of hours into this game and bought it so many times, but it wasn't until I got into D&D that I had a great appreciation for this game.  It does so much and it does it pretty well.  Plus this game introduced the end of the level cap, which was a major complaint for me with the other Bethesda RPGs.  This game gives you so many different ways to play and with such a large world to explore.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
So many times have I tried to get into the Metal Gear series, but I just couldn't keep with it and I would constantly abandon it.  I don't even know why I bought and kept playing this game over the past 5 years, but I regret nothing.  I've played this game every year since release slowly working towards the platinum for it because just I love this game so much.  I understand most MGS fans will say this game isn't a true Metal Gear game because it throws so many of the old conventions out the window, but this game is just fantastic on it's own.  But finally earning the platinum in this game finally pushed me to play through the rest of the franchise.  Now I do wish I had played through in some sense of order whether chronological or release, but I still loved every minute of the franchise, even playing the old ones with dated gameplay mechanics.  The story is so just fucking out there with Kojima's story telling, but the gameplay is so solid and every mission has tons of different ways you can go about it.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
I remember when this was first teased and I thought it was going to be a new entry in the Shadow Tower series, and that excited me because I love seeing old franchises being revived.  The fact that this game was originally designed to be a Tenchu game still sort of fulfills that mindset, even though it is a new IP.  I've only recently grown to love Souls games, as I just didn't really understand them.  I bought this game day one and even bought the collector's edition for it.  So much content for not much over the standard edition, even if it is a GS exclusive.  By the time I got to this game I was already quite into the Souls/Borne style of games, so making a Ninja style Souls game just sounded amazing to me... and you know what, this game is freaking amazing.  The art style, the theme and setting, everything about this game was just amazing.  I've waffled on whether this or Control were my GOTY for 2019 and I wound up initially picking Control, but I think that was bias because I had just recently played it, but Sekiro is definitely my GOTY for 2019.  It's one of the only games I've ever played, beaten, and then immediately started the game over (even including NG+, and that's what this was) and beat the game again.  I normally can't be bothered to replay games in general let alone back to back.  This game was so damned good, and I wasn't ready to be done with it that I beat it twice back to back.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This is another one that throws old conventions to the wind.  Most Zelda games are fairly linear in how they play and progress, but this one threw all of that out the window and gave you a massive open world, open order to completion, and upped the difficulty to the combat to a sort of Souls level.  It did lose a lot of what made a Zelda game great with the omission of a well built and structured soundtrack and progression, but the game just lets you lose yourself to its world, and that is pretty amazing on its own.  It's the type of game, that in my opinion, pleases a lot of the 2D and 3D fans of the series by giving so much of what both offered, without sacrificing too much (except the soundtrack  ::))

Yakuza 3, 4, 5, 0, Kiwami, 6, and Kiwami 2
I'm going to lump all of these games together... and leave out Dead Souls... because this entire franchise is just a testament to fantastic pacing, storytelling, and beat 'em up gameplay while building a world visually similar to real life Japanese locales, yet its own.  And literally the entire franchise 0-6 was released in some manner this decade.  I will preface this that I am not excited nor looking forward to Yakuza 7 as a part of my love for this franchise was the beat 'em up gameplay, and I'm not a huge fan of strategy RPGs and more a fan of skill based things.  This series tells an amazing story of essentially the life of Kiryu Kazuma with so many memorable characters, settings, and storylines.  Some of it a tad over the top, but that's part of what really makes this series.  But if you were to twist my arm and make me pick one as my favorite... I'd say Yakuza 5, which is nuts as it was the only digital only entry in this series for westerners... soon getting a physical release on PS4!

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
While I love the entire Uncharted series, even though the majority of the game is glorified cutscenes, this entry is my favorite entry in the series and worthy of being touted by itself.  It does so much to tie off the series and end the story of Nathan Drake.  I've heard a lot of hate for this entry and this series in general, but I really can't be bothered to hear what folks have to say as I love it.  Not many games tug my emotions and have me feeling so connected to its characters, but Uncharted did that so well and especially well with this entry.

Super Mario Odyssey
At the time this title released, I feel like it had been a while since we had a good 3D platformer collectathon game, so this game was a welcomed entry in the series for me.  I've never been huge on 2D platformer games, I just get bored of them so quickly, so the games we got since the Galaxy series just didn't click with me, even Super Mario 3D World didn't really click with me because it just felt too 2D inspired compared to Galaxy which was heavily driven by its 3D environments.  This game felt like a true successor to the Sunshine/64 games and the content way surpassed both of those titles in terms of collectibles.  It feels endless, which it might very well be.

To be continued

Lol Nintendo much? :o

what can I say in modern era it's mostly nintendo games that I like. in past era it would have been different with sega and also sony joining the party.

especially in modern day there are only two options sony or nintendo. There is absolutely fun to be had on the side of sony but nintendo just takes the cake for me in terms of fun. i've played my fair share of ps4 games with friends it's a way more popular system than switch in the west after all most people only have a switch as a side console over here at least. but overall them open world games like red dead redemption skyrim fallout GTA or them cinematic games them very modern rpg etc but even the more niche games rpg's fighting games and such while great overall I'd rather play something else. The triple A games i don't enjoy that much and the niche games I'd rather play something older or go to nintendo for my current gen fill since they have stuff that suits my palette better.

i guess Nintendo games keep things more old school same for dragonquest XI a non nintendo release originally wich is why I probably stick with nintendo for my favourite modern releases.

I'll give Kof XIII for ps3 an honorable mention one of the last modern fighting games with the cool 2d sprites not to anime like visuals on a relatively modern system while also having excellent gameplay one of the better kof games actually. kinda sad that also kof joined the 3d side. the 2d visuals werent perfect to much steroids on some characters but they where better in certain aspects thanks to being on a powerfull console plus more modern skills to implement but those are just minor things excellent game overall.

apparently 2d sprites are tons more work and cost way more money to produce than 3d models. never knew but if that's really the case I absolutely get the 3d transistion since majority prefers 3d in fighting games these days it's a big win for the company if they save money and time while majority wants 3d anyway.. some things are better in 3d say smash bros for example is better in 3d the 2d fangames are great but 3d works very well for that fighting game series 2d sprites it doesnt fit that series imo. classic fighting games however are a different story those 2d sprites are awesome modern transitions like kof XIII would have been nice.

1. Dark Souls 1-3
2. BioShock 2 / BioShock Infinite
3. Dead Rising 2 / Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

8. Bloodborne
9. Wasteland 2
10. Red Dead Redemption (haven't played #2 yet but it'll likely make the list once I get to it)

Som games in my backlog or games that don't yet have physical releases would probably have replaced some entries on the list had I gotten around to playing them but they'll have to wait a bit longer (yes, I'm looking at YOU Dragon Quest XI, Witcher 3 and Cuphead!)
