Title: What was the WEIRDEST game you played as a kid?
Post by: faxmachine on April 21, 2012, 08:07:03 pm
Out of This World blew my mind as a kid. I had never seen a game like that, and it creeped me out so much. I had no clue what I was doing, but I really enjoyed it.

I never played Out of this World, but I did play Flashback and it was amazing. I'd say most of the games I had as a kid were pretty low key. I can't name one that I would call weird off the top of my head.

Same developer, Delphine Software. I have never heard of Flashback. I will have to check that out! I will if you try out Out of This World ;)
Edit:
Turns out Delphine also made Shaq Fu, lol.

Ha Shaq Fu, I had that. I'll take it as my Weirdest game ever. It even came with a CD with Shaq rapping on it. ???

I'd never heard of Out Of This World until I saw the Game Center CX for it. Posting it here because Arino is hilarious at pretty much every game he plays, and this one is no exception.

I'm surprised there are gamers who never heard of Flashback or Out of This World :o You guys aren't that young 8)
I'm not sure if Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is weird, but it is strange and one of the funniest games I've played. It's a LucasArts SCUMM game where aliens are undercover at the phone company trying to take over the world using a stupidity machine (lowers the IQ of humans). Some odd things are two of Zak's friends can fly to Mars in their van and a two-headed squirrel makes an appearance in Washington (that's my current avatar). I never did finish the game as it can be challenging, and it's possible to run out of money which happened to me. I took too many flights to the wrong locations which maxed out my credit card. You can win the lottery in the game but after reading a hint guide I still found that to be difficult :P
Seaman probably counts as weird ;D I like that game even though it's mostly just managing an aquarium. Unfortunately, I ran out of food when Seaman was only a day or two from being released into the wild so he/it died :'(

It depends on what you mean by weird. Super Mario Bros is about a plumber who runs in a straight line eating mushrooms and flowers and is continually attacked by mushrooms, turtles and fish.

Just got back from my first swap meet ever. Pretty good success there, but I wanted to share this with Scott.
The first game I see when I walk in is none other than Flashback in a Renter's box (the cut up the case and put it in a sleeved clear box), with the manual (pretty beat up). I can't wait to try this game!

As for me, probably Earthbound.

You are right, Delphine. Fixed. I still haven't played Earthbound. I remember starting it as a rom ages ago and turned it off when I realized it was an RPG. Soon I will test out RPGs again, I am sure they are great.

im going to have to go with pretty much any mystical ninja game. the n64 one especially. the song about Impact the robot, the creepy fortune teller, or the hula hooping naked body builders during the game over screen, the game had it all man

I wasn't a kid when I played it, but Conkers Bad Fur Day on n64 is pretty full of wtf awesomeness. The great mighty poo, the flower with huge knockers, the entire WW2 sequence and Gregg. The game is easily on my favorites of all time list.

There was this game for Nintendo, where the main character was a ninja of some sort. Anyway, the main attack was him whipping his hair at the enemy. His hair was long.
To this day I can't find that game ...

The first thing that comes to mind is JJ & Jeff on the TG16. Wow that game was weird. It was like Adventure Island saturated with weird Japanese humor. And the US version was tamed down from the Japanese original.

I'll just use "very different from most games" as my definition for "weird" here and say that the 1st game that springs to my mind would have to be:
Indigo Prophecy (on the PS2)...

Do you happen to remember what they changed or have a site or something that I could look at for differences? I'm doing my draft thesis this summer (basically a research project that they then determine whether or not it's viable as a thesis/dissertation) on the changes made when games are localized and how those differences related to culture. I have a whole list of games for examples but I've never heard of this one. Oh, and if anyone else has anything good like this, let me know.

Congos Caper on SNES. You're a monkey, turned into a caveman that fights other cavemen and dinosaurs in order to save your monkey girlfriend. I'll look for a YouTube link tomorrow ha

It should be noted for anyone interested. That Eric Chahi left Delphine Software and founded his own dev studio, Amazing Studio. Which gave us Heart of Darkness on the Playstation.
I would say that as a youth my weirdest games would have had to had been, Earthworm Jim and Booger Man. After those nothing much surprises me anymore.

The Cutting Room Floor (http://tcrf.net/J.J._%26_Jeff) has a page on that. :)
I go and add stuff to the wiki every so often, here's the main regional differences category. (http://tcrf.net/Category:Games_with_regional_differences) Some pages are small, while others are very extensive!

I don't blame the game, I blame Atari. They paid something outrageous for the license, like $20 million dollars. But with that type of monetary investment, the actual game seemed like an oversight to them. They had Howard Scott Warshaw create it, but gave him 5 weeks -- by himself -- to crank out an ET game. He was a good game designer, who was originally responsible for Yars Revenge. But with 5 weeks how can you expect to craft a masterpiece?
ET actually has a reputation that's far worse than it deserves. It was crap, but it's far from the worst game I've played on the 2600.

It actually looks fairly playable. I've also never seen her videos before and they aren't bad.
its fun but the sad thing is that a lot people think its bad or say its bad just because christian video game or because the only version they ever played is the special edition :'(

Kabuki: Quantum Fighter is one weird fuckin' game. I mean, look at this.
If you've played the game, you'd know that this is indeed a male protagonist. Not to mention the fact that you attack by whipping your long red hair.
Anyways, this game had great fucking music and gameplay aside from it having a bonkers story.
This is one of my favorites from childhood. Me and my neigbour used to destroy this on a weekly basis back in the day haha. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good Mega Man style platformer!
