Title: What's the best free haul you've ever gotten?
Post by: dakooldood on May 17, 2020, 10:06:36 pm
I see posts on reddit all the time about family members giving their collections to people, today it happened to me! My uncle was getting rid of his old games and checked to see if I wanted them. The text that he sent me said there was just a few, but when he gave them to me, there were 80 exactly, plus a couple of old wrestling dvds. Granted, most are sports games but I'm definitely not complaining. https://imgur.com/a/ifTy1rF (https://imgur.com/a/ifTy1rF)

Anyways, that got me curious. What was your best haul that you didn't pay for?

Very nice!

My best hauls were years ago, before there was really a market for this stuff. I had a co-worker who knew I played old games ask me if I had a Dreamcast. I did not. "oh, I just found all my old games & thought you might want them". I told him for free games I'd go buy a Dreamcast! I forget what all was in the lot, but I know it had Magnetic Neo, Record of Lodoss War, Shemue… and Shemue 2. The European release. With a boot disc to run it. That was awesome. I later bought Evolution 2 from a Gamestop blowing out DC games, mildly disappointed they didn't have the first one. Got home, took the tape hold the case shut off, and a disc fell out. But the disc was still in the case? I picked up the mystery disc- Evolution 1. I'm not sure that counts, though.

The REAL haul was a couple years before that. I went over to a friend's house, and she was having a fight with her mom over owning too many videogames. She eventually says "FINE- hey, do you want my SNES?" Of course I said yes (I tried to argue that I already had 7 consoles, which was more that what my friend had, but it did not appease mom.) You know what games came with that SNES? Amongst others: Donkey Kong country 1-3, Zelda: Link to the Past, Mario World, Mario RPG, Starfox, frickin' Evo: Search For Eden... Literally a trove of gaming by today's standards. I caught one heck of a break thanks to angry mom!

probably from my sister, but I choose to pay her, since I knew she needed the money.

great hall By the way!  :) some games in their I have too like original Sims for the PlayStation 2 I think it's a classic, basically the sims original for the PS2 is vary close to the original one for the PC  once you past the first stages. the only issue is. the disc is one of the blue bottom colored games that many .PS2's don't have that needed laser working anymore.

And I love Atari Anthology too :D,

Even though you got mostly sports games, that is not a bad thing because I firmly believe PS1 and PS2 sports games are way underappreciated. most sports games I've played have so many playable options and tweaks that will keep you busy for years to come :)

Cousin of mine gave me her classic gameboy and about a half dozen games when I was asking friends and family if they had old game stuff they didn't want a while back so I could add it to my collection.  The Gameboy has gone on to have some screen issues, but still works and I got a nice clear plastic display case for it and a couple of the games from a friend to better display it.

I'd say! I actually did get a few SNES games from a cousin a few years back, they were actually some of the first games that got me into retro gaming. The best games among those were DKC 1 and Castlevania IV.

Yeah, some of those sports titles do look interesting, mainly the wrestling games. I'll have to try them.

Probably ten years ago, a friend gave me his original Xbox and all of the games he had for it. A few years later, another friend gave me a Sega Dreamcast and several games as well.

My uncle would always give me his old consoles and games whenever he moved on. Still have them to this day. Got my SNES, PS1, PS2, and N64 from him. He stopped gaming around the PS2 time so had to start getting them myself, haha.

I'd say the time that I got my PS1 from my older brother with quite a decent amount of games when I was beginning high school in like 2011 or 2012. Although this other cool free haul I got from a GameStop employee just handing out free PS2 and PS1 games. (I only took some of the PS2 games as I already had and still have the PS1 games being handed out, so I let some others take them)

You might want to look up what NCAA 14 sells for. it's quietly become one of the most valuable games from the last gen.

I've received 3 free hauls in my life.

1st was a 3DO in 95-97 with maybe a dozen or so games. Ended up selling it when I moved (I wasn't into video games at the time, mostly just played road rash with my roomie). Only system I've ever sold, and naturally...I regret that.

2nd was a free Dreamcast (Also with a dozen games or so) in 2001. Was a guy I was friends with on the internet that offered it to me (We had mutual IRL friends thought) I wasn't into video games at this time either, but I liked the system a lot more. Played Shadow Man, phantasy star, time stalkers to death. So excited Shadow Man is getting a remaster in 2021 :) Still have it, and have been tempted to get the device that allows you to play online with it's small but dedicated community. Crazy that 20 years later it still has a player base like that. There was a used bookstore that sold games, so from 2001-2003 I picked a few additional games up.

Latest was a SNES in 2005 (I went Sega that gen) with again....maybe a dozen games. Given to me by a co-worker. Still have it, but haven't really done much other than to boot the games up and make sure they work. I've picked up a few cheap games since.

I had a friend and collector years ago that just gave me a bunch of doubles of his for free, and these weren't old sports games or cheap commons. I feel bad for not remembering every game in the lot, but I do recall several uncommon PS2 games being in there like Mega Man X8, Downhill Domination, and Silent Hill 3 being in there. There were about 5 others too, but I don't recall what they were.

I've been working on trying to get my fiancee's cousin to finally bring all his childhood games to one of our family gatherings for years. He still has his original NES and SNES from when he was a kid and has insisted for probably the last 5-years that we can just have them. Unfortunately he lives in Arizona and we see him probably once a year tops. I don't think he has anything super rare, but certainly has a lot of the must have titles, and really who cares, he's giving these to us lol. Only question is when.

Only when I was a young lad, heh.

My neighbor at the time was heading off to college and was clearing out his room, I remember him coming over to my house with a box of comics because he knew I always bought and read as well. Especially those older Marvel G.I Joe and Transformers comics back then.

After my mom let him in he saw I was playing on my NES, he said he had a bunch of games too he could give me. He came back with a box of at least 20+ games. A lot of them I still have till now. Games that I would have never picked up as a kid, we're talking about stuff like Dr. Chaos, Legendary Wings, Robo Warrior, Dynowarz. These titles weren't really talked about in my school at that time. But I couldn't be happier, some of those games turned out to be my all time favorites.

There were a tonne of trading cards in the box as well with a few Silver Hawks figures. Really cool dude for giving all that to me. I wonder what he is up to now... maybe I should find him on FB and say hi.

Wow, I had heard that it was pretty valuable, but I had never looked up the price before. Guess I got pretty lucky with that one.

Most of the free stuff that comes to mind is stuff where my parents were like "Oh, we went to an estate sale and they had video games, so we bought this stuff" Which isn't really free, but I didn't pay.

Actual free stuff... I wouldn't say any of the ones that come to mind are very good.

A girl I was dating in high school gave me her Sega Genesis and a bunch of sports games because her family didn't want it anymore.

I was at a Gamestop and a dude was trying to trade in a box of retro stuff, a lot of stuff they wouldn't take, but I guess the guy at the register knew I collected or something and he suggested that me and the dude work out a deal where he's use my Pro membership to increase his trade credit for what they would take and he'd give me whatever they wouldn't take.  Mostly junk stuff and a couple of interesting accessories, but I was surprised that GS wouldn't take Popeye for NES as I think that's worth $15.

It would have to be that time I found a NES and about 40 games in the garbage in 1998.

This is similar to one of my best hauls. I found a Wii with about ten accessories and a dozen or so games near a garbage area about two years ago.

I also inherited a Turbografx-16, a Turbo Tap, and ten games from some extended family when I was very young around 1997. Playing it was my first experience with gaming, and I still have it all.

I don't know if it would classify as free, but there was at least no money changing hands.  Just my time.

A friend of mine, who is friends with somebody who used to own a retro game store that went under.  She got tasked with sorting and cataloging for sale the inventory of the store.  She called me to come down and give her a hand since I'm the only guy in the area that knows what's what with these things.

The owner made it clear she wouldn't pay me for my time but instead left it to my friend to determine how it was to go down.  Her solution, as we're going through this if you find something you like or want, take it.

I worked under two rules, if there was only one copy in the lot I left it.  If there were multiple copies I only took one and only games I was interested in.  Most of this was early era games, NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64.   There was PS1 and PS2 as well, just not as much.

I left with boxed copies of
SNES
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II Turbo
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat 3
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Demon's Crest
Super Castlevania IV
Final Fight
Sky Blazer
Cybernator
Super Ghouls n' Ghosts
Zombie's Ate My Neighbors
X-Men Mutant Apocolypse
Venom-Spider Man: Separation Anxiety
U.N. Squadron

Genesis
Lightening Force
Contra: Hard Corps
Landstalker
Sparkster
Golden Axe
Golden Axe II
El Viento
Elemental Master
Truxton
Grananda
Ranger x
Arrow Flash
Dynamite Headdy
Final Zone
Grind Stormer
Outrunners
Phantasy Star III
TMNT: Hyperstone Hiest
Gunstar Heroes

And a bunch of loose NES carts all from incredibly common to not so much so like
Contra Force
Duck Tales 2
Shatterhand
Kick Master
Dragon Warrior IV
Felix the Cat

All total it was several hundred games.  I know what you're thinking.  No, I didn't put a dent in that volume of games.  There were thousands.

Where's that one UK guy on here- in all his pickup posts he always talks about all the stuff he gets for free.   ;D

My brother has given me a number of games for free over the years as he has gone in and out of collecting- ps2, nintendo, etc...

I've gotten a lot of stuff over the years where I ended up selling other stuff to make the overall purchase/acquisition a net positive, but not a ton of outright free stuff.

I got some free nes boxes about a year ago.  I bought some gba stuff from this older guy, he brought out a bunch of nes box/manuals only- some decent titles, castlevania III, mega man 2, guardian legend, tmnt, kirby's adventure, a few others.   i didn't have any extra cash, but the guy said I could just have them all for free anyways.  One of the better pickups I've ever had.  Not a truly free haul, but significant parts were free.

in my case it's deals for cheap, sell the stuff gain money while adding stuff to the collection for free so not truly free.

actual free stuff

I got some comics back in the day from some friends but in terms of games no free stuff here.

in terms of free additions to sets that I did not expect.

one of the better ones was when a guy added a bunch of cib sega 16 bit games to the set wich i didnt expect. phelios aero acrobat 2 and a bunch of other solid titles like shadow dancer and quite a bit more that was fun but again no free haul in that case either.

I don't mind it though I'm not to sure If I could accept free stuff from close friends or family for really good stuff anyway.

@ffxik

That's a great haul. if you could score such titles especially boxed or cib yet most of them are duplicates while barely denting their stock, damm what kind of collection did that store have good stuff.

Got a free mario bros. Arcade and a Sega Dreamcast kiosk and a Big Electronic games Limited Konami machine from the same friend. But at different times once for helping him move and once when he had to close one of his stores he was going to leave it behind anyway so he offered it to me.

Not all of it, most of it was really common titles.  Those were just some of the standouts.  Most weren't cib they are missing the instruction manuals.  The ones that didn't have duplicates we're some of the rarer NES and SNES games.  We're talking Little Sampson and the like.  Those are the ones I left.

To put it bluntly the entire thing was in a garden shed at the owners house.  It took two trips in a 1/2 ton pickup and we had the bed of it rounded over with boxes both times.  The store had been moved from a bigger city to a backwater, hillbilly retirement town and since nobody buys games like that in this area.  It was pretty much doomed from the start.

I got to spend several weeks testing games I never thought I'd get to play, all the while bolstering my collection to boot.  All it cost me was time.

I not sure if I would be correct, but I saw the game called "Bully" (in the photo to the left bottom) for the PlayStation 2, I think? it's worth quite a bit, I could have sworn I saw that game for a higher asking price? but right now it's only $20 USD's on Ebay now please if anyone reading this knows that Bully is not a sought after video game please say so. I can't remember but I saw this game going for about $50 USD earlier? I don't quite remember but I think it is a hard game to find or not.

anyway I would definitely not recommend get rid of Bully anytime soon, I have a feeling it may rise in value in the future, or not too sure. any please correct me someone

IDK about PS2, but the Xbox 360 version was pricey for awhile, but it's been reprinted a lot since it became backwards compatible on the XB1...so the price has dropped a bit. It very well could have been worth more on PS2, but it was re-released digitally on PS4 so that may have had an impact (Less likely than the reprinting Xbox did)

Other than that, I can’t think of anytime I got free stuff.

Pretty much every ps2 consoles should be able to read them blue discs, thing is allot of them just make a hell lot of sound while playing them only few not, or you have to open some up and make some alterations to make it more quiet. but it's not to strange them blue discs spin allot faster than them dvd discs hence why the ps2 makes more sound for most models.

if your ps2 console can't play blue discs, it probably is near the end of it's life spam usually the laser. it's the same thing as not being able to play ps1 games. Consoles that have been used allot might stop playing those discs all together and could only play regular ps2 discs than.

Yep, that's Bully. I don't think it's worth a whole lot, but I'm not planning on getting rid of it because the same uncle that gave me all this was the one that introduced me to Bully a long time ago. I loved it and ended up getting it for PS4.

I actually did- she told me she had a second SNES are her dad's so it was fine. She then got pissed at me later becuase she decided she wanted Zelda back for said other system, & I offered to buy her a new copy becuase me & my siblings already had save files going... apparently it was a my game but she somehow expected I wouldn't play it?

You also wouldn't feel as bad if you knew how many of my discs (CDs & games) she borrowed & lost/scratched to the point of death... I'm lucky we could get my copy of Lunar: Silver Star Story fixed.

Ah, man. I always envy those kinds of posts & stories. I read them a lot on reddit, too.

I have never had any free hauls for games. I have even tried asking friends, family, and co-workers. Even tried asking them "if you know anyone who has (____), I'd be interested in it".

Oh well. I'm still not giving up on trying!

Wasn't quite free, but my brother had a couple Atari 2600's that he was getting rid of. He had a box with one of the systems, 20 games and 4 controllers. He said I could have it for whatever was in my wallet. Keep in mind, I was like 14 years old at the time. I opened my wallet and there was $2. He accepted. I took it home and it worked great.

I feel the Atari is still my grandparent's house to this day lost in their garage.
