Sega 32X [AU]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/sega32xau
Sega Ozisoft imported Sega 32X games mostly from Europe for sale in Australia.
An AU release can be identified by the presense of an ACB rating label and/or a Sega Ozisoft label.
All of the releases in Australia for 32X games are imported from other countries or regions. Because PAL is the video standard for Australia, this usually means that EU versions were imported, but occasionally some US boxes may be found. You can easily find actual EU releases being sold in the secondary market in Australia, however these games should not be added to this category. Only add games to this category if they have the appropriate labels.
Rating
The ACB rating labels are not placed uniform across all releases, even all releases of the same game. While usually these labels can be found over-top of the original ratings, there are many instances where they are not. This means that the original rating on the box is visible. When adding the rating for a game in this category, the ACB rating should be set and not an ELSPA or ESRB rating even if it is visible, although these other ratings can be put into Description.
Examples of ACB Rating labels found on 32X games:
The second image is of a wrap-around label that is visible on the front, spine and back of the box.
Item Number
The Item Number for an Australian release game is printed on a Sega Ozisoft label. It follows a format of LLLLNNLLL, where L = letter and N is number. This key is used because the item numbers include both O and 0 (zero). This is the item number that is put onto the entry.
Example Sega Ozisoft label from Doom (https://vgcollect.com/item/195814).
Other item numbers from the box can be put into Description.
Barcode
The AU specific barcode is also put onto the Sega Ozisoft label and this is the barcode that should be on the entry. You can see it in the above picture. Other barcodes, if visible/present, can be put into Description.

Sega 32X [BR]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/sega32xbr
Tec Toy released Mega 32X (Sega 32X) and Mega CD 32X (Sega CD 32X) games in Brazil.
The Mega 32X releases are yellow and the Mega CD 32X releases are blue/dark blue/purple designs.
Some are released in a carboard box with the built-in hanger, some in a plastic case.
The cartridges have unique labels on the front and back:
The back label text reads:
TEC TOY IND. DE BRINQUEDOS S.A.
PRODUZIDO NA ZONA FRANCA DE MANAUS
INDÚSTRIA BRASILEIRA
Price Letters
The prices in Brazil are represented in the form of letters with a circle. They often can be found on the spine of the case and are typically printed and part of the artwork. There are circumstances where a label with a letter is present instead, indicating a price revision. This information should be put into Description.
Blackthorne (https://vgcollect.com/item/162017) has the Letter B printed on the spine.
Rating
TecToy used their own rating system (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8623.msg187416.html#msg187416). Currently we do not have an option in the drop-down menu for the TecToy ratings, so they can be put into Description.
Item Number
The item numbers for these games are often found on the back cover, either next to the barcode or to the side of the back art. They are printed as Modelo No.
Blackthorne has the Modelo No 152130 on the back cover:
Barcode
The additional digit (0) seen in the above image of the sample barcode is something that Tectoy appears to have done exclusively and similar markings are not present in other products sold in Brazil. This number is not part of the barcode and should be omitted.

Some games were released in a plastic case.
Item Name - TLD
This category is considered to be for the United States, so only Canadian specific releases will use the TLD of [CA].
Item Numbers
For cardboard slidebox releases, the item number and barcode are printed on one spine.
For plastic case releases, the item number is on the spine, or cardboard slidebox will have it on the side opposite of the barcode.

Sega CD [NA]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/segacdna
Sega released Sega CD games in United States and Canada.
Packaging types
The original releases came in a cardboard box
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/9368.jpg)
while later releases were in a long jewel case (the same case style was also used for Sega Saturn and some Sony PlayStation releases in North America)
The black plastic insert will have the official Compact Disc Digital Audio logo stamped into it, whereas aftermarket cases do not have this.
Other packaging may include cardboard sleeves and Digipaks.
Rating
Games are rated with VRC (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8623.msg145217.html#msg145217) or ESRB (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8623.msg145213.html#msg145213) ratings.

-
Sega Genesis [NA]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/gen
Sega released Genesis games in the United States and Canada.
All releases with variations where a cardboard box version exists, but have no descriptor are considered to be the plastic case release. The case type should be put into Description.
Hangtabs
Nearly all plastic case releases have a molded hangtab as part of the shell. A used copy may have this removed.
Grid style covers
The grid style plastic case releases have different spine designs,
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cover-spine-grid-gallery.jpg)
Box text "Made in x" matching to cart stampings
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cover-made-in-back.jpg)
In most instances, the "Made/Assembled in" text that is printed on the box will match the manufacturing location of the cartridge.
The first release of Ecco the Dolphin (https://vgcollect.com/item/10140) has cover text "Cartridge Made in Japan" and the cart has a "Made in Japan" stamping.
The second release of Ecco the Dolphin (https://vgcollect.com/item/10140) has cover text "Assembled in the USA" and the cart has a "Assembled in the USA" stamping.
The exception to this is concerning the grid style box with the barcode on the spine. For these releases, Sega did not print different inserts based on the cart or manual like other releases. So for example, there are two carts for Greendog (https://vgcollect.com/item/165059) but only one box (https://vgcollect.com/item/10213).
Seals of Quality
There are three seals of quality, the original "Official Sega Genesis Seal of Quality", the later "Official Sega Seal of Quality" and the white/gray/blue version of the original that was sometimes used by third party publishers.
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cover-seal-genesis-gold.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cover-seal-sega-gold.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cover-seal-genesis-white.jpg)
There are a few instances where a game was released with an old and new seal, but there is no known releases with/without the white seal and one of the yellow ones. There is a black/red version as well, but it is only known to exist on a rare version of Quackshot (https://vgcollect.com/item/173175).
Not for Resale
There are three main types of Not for Resale (NFR) logos or labels on boxed releases. The first is a small text label that is present on boxes and the corresponding carts.
The second is the large NFR which is printed on the front cover and cart label. With exception to some NFR releases of Sonic the Hedgehog (https://vgcollect.com/item/139582), where it is a label on the box and cart instead.
The third is printed on a front cover and is either printed on, or is its own label on the cart label. More about cart labels are at the end of this section.
Plastic Case ESRB re-releases
Some games were re-released in the plastic case with ESRB ratings on the cover and manual.
Cardboard box re-releases
Some games were re-released in a cardboard box with a black and white manual and a cart with a re-purposed cart shell. The cart stamp is typically covered by a black label. The exception to this is the cardboard box release of Sonic 2 which contains a Sonic 2 NFR cart with a white Sega Seal of Quality label on the cart label.
Canadian releases
Canadian releases are typically the same as original US releases with the exception of having a different cover.
Later releases of grid covers have no frame around the artwork and the art goes to the edge of the covers.
For the early releases where the US cover had that type of cover, the back cover of the Canadian version is missing the white frame and player number.
Sega Red Spine
Plastic case releases can have either a VRC or ESRB rating. The Genesis text may be in either white or silver, but there are no known instances where a white and silver text version exists for the same game. These should also have a hangtab molded into the case.
Konami
Konami released games in plastic case with a Konami logo on the cover and in plastic case and cardboard flip-top and slide boxes with a Konami Classics logo on the cover.
Ballistic
Ballistic releases come in a cardboard boxes. The boxes are identical between the licensed and non-licensed releases. Video Game Classics releases are licensed. Cartridges are the same as in EU releases. Single color cart label variations exist for unlicensed carts.
Unlicensed cart label
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cart_ballistic-unlicensed-text.jpg)
Licensed cart labels have text "Licensed by Sega Enterprises Ltd. for play on the Sega Genesis System"
Majesco and Ballistic reprints
Many plastic case games were re-released by Ballistic in plastic cases and cardboard boxes. The boxes, manuals and carts are often Made or Assembled in Mexico. Some games were released in one style or in both styles.
The boxes are either flip-top boxes or slideboxes. The slideboxes will have either a vertical or horizontal cart holder insert.
Ballistic releases will have a "Published by Ballistic" label on the back cover.
There is a transitional period for the cart shells used in these releases. The manufacturing location in Mexico was previously owned by Acclaim, and as a result, some of these releases may have a cart with a black label on the back, and if that label is removed there will be an Acclaim stamp. Other labels used were for Konami or Virgin, before eventually Sega labels and then official Sega Assembled in Mexico stampings. In general, the stampings or type of label will match either the flip-top box, slidebox or Ballistic label releases (even Ballistic labelled plastic case releases) and there are a few known examples where a specific packaging type may have come with more than one cart stamping or label version. In general, any Ballistic plastic case or any cardboard box games should not come with a "Made in Japan" cart.
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cart-label-konami.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cart-label-black.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_na_cart-stamp-sega-mexico.jpg)
Electronic Arts
The first releases from Electronic Arts came in cardboard flip-top boxes. Afterwards they released games in plastic cases that did not have a molded hangtab. The boxes come in three main sizes: size similar to regular Genesis plastic cases, a double sized version and a thin version that did not have the tabs for holding a cart. For games that were released in mutiple different sized plastic cases, the inserts are not interchangeable between them as they are cut different.
For the pre-white cover design sports titles, covers are marked as either Electronic Arts, EASN, EASN Presents, EA Sports or EA Sports Presents.
Some EA Sports releases in 1993 and 1994 have either an EASN or EA Sports Limited Edition 1st Round label on the front cover. There are no known instances of a game having both EASN and EA Sports LE releases.
The prefix for the serial number may vary and is not tracked or seen as a valid variation in the database.
Starting in 1993, the NBA games released by EA (as well as NBA Jam/TE from Midway) have an Officially Licensed Product hologram on the front cover (except NBA Jam where it is on the spine).
EA also did some reprints where the most obvious difference between releases are the use of different cart labels, but these carts are also made in different countries and the boxes often will have different copyright info.
Cart revisions
Some EA carts have different item numbers. It is not currently fully understood what the differences are or the purpose of these numbers. They may be rom or even manufacturing changes.
Some are known however, such as PGA Tour Golf II where the 7155 cart uses the 7 Courses ROM and 7155A uses the 6 Courses ROM.
There are other releases where a cart label revision exists but is currently not tracked in the database nor is it known what the revision entails. For example, Populous has been identified to have 6 different carts: 7016, 7016 with B label, 7016 with C label, 7016 with C printed, 7016 with D label, 7016 with D printed.
Tengen
Tengen releases have many variations including plastic case (Made in Japan), plastic case (Made in USA) and cardboard slide box (Made in USA). The box front for the Made in Japan box has text: "Manufactured by Sega Enterprises, Ltd. for play on the SEGA GENESIS SYSTEM" while the Made in USA box and cardboard box has text: "Manufactured for play on the SEGA GENESIS SYSTEM"
The cartridges are also different between versions, having either copyright text, and in some instances with and without Sega Seal of Quality on the label.
Cart labels
Not for Resale
Pack-in games with consoles often do not also include their own case. These loose cartridges would use one of three labels: Not for Resale (NFR) with small starburst, NFR with large starburst.
Yellow Sega label
Some carts can be found either as pack-ins or (typically) in cardboard box releases with a yellow Sega label on them. This label is put over top of an existing NFR label or logo.
There is one known instance of a different label, the white Sega Seal of Quality label which was only used on the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cardboard box releases.
Sega Game Secrets logo
On later releases, you may find cart labels with a Sega Game Secrets text box with phone number. They can be found in two colors: yellow and white. In some instances a game may have been released with both, such as Taz in Escape from Mars - Mega Hit Series, where the first release has the yellow logo and the Ballistic reprint has the white logo.

Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Accessory
https://vgcollect.com/browse/genmegadriveaccessory
This category is for any non-game and non-console item that is design specifically and exclusively for use with a Sega Genesis, Sega Mega Drive or clone consoles. Any accessory that comes with a game should be in the appropriate game category and not in this accessory category.
Official release items are those that are made by Sega or Samsung. Third party official release will have a Sega Genesis Seal of Quality or Sega Seal of Quality in North America, or a Mega Drive logo in Japan.
Console add-ons such as the 32X, Sega CD and Power Base Converters are accessories and should be in this category and not in hardware. A 32X or Sega CD release that included a pack-in game is in the appropriate games category and not in Accessory or Hardware category.

- Any plug and play/emulation console that has a working cartridge slot.
- Any clone console that can only play Genesis/MD, 32X and/or Sega CD games.
- Development consoles and computers
- Hotel/demo consoles and computers
What is not tracked in this section:
- Any clone console that supports games from other systems besides Gen/MD, 32X and/or Sega CD, such as a console that has Genesis and NES cartridge slots.
- Any plug and play/emulation console that does not have a working cartridge slot.
- Any custom modified systems
- Board or chip revisions (with exception of TMSS/non-TMSS)
Genesis Model 1 tampographs
Sega Genesis Model 1 with the "High Definition Graphics" tampograph was available in:
- the Altered Beast packs in US and Canada
- the Sonic the Hedgehog packs in US and Canada
- the "Sega Genesis" release in Canada
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_hdg-text.jpg)
Genesis TMSS vs non-TMSS
TradeMark Security System (TMSS) is the security lockout feature of the console. The original release of the console in either the "Sega Genesis" release in Canada and the first Altered Beast packs in US and Canada lack the TMSS feature. There is no (known) way to tell if an Altered Beast pack has a TMSS or non-TMSS console inside of it, but you can tell on a loose console. On the bottom there is an info plate with an FCC ID.
Consoles without a TMSS have an FCC ID of FJ846EUSASEGA.
Consoles with a TMSS have an FCC ID of FJ8USASEGA.

Genesis Made in
As with the games themselves, the places that consoles are "Made in" will match the "Made in" text on the console boxes in most cases. Model 1 boxes have this text on the back in the copyright block.
Or some Model 1 and most Model 2 will have it near the barcode.
The Genesis 3 will have this printed on the back of the box or on a label.
Asian Specification
Console boxes outside of NA, EU, JP, KR often will have a label to indicate what TV system the console is for. Often these labels can be found on various boxes, sometimes even unchanged Japanese Mega Drive boxes.

PAL: India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
PAL B: Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore
PAL D: China
PAL I: Hong Kong, Macau

PAL M: South America
Official Distributor labelling
There are various official labels that were used for consoles that were distributed in various countries. There are known instances where a console was distributed with these labels in countries that had official Sega releases.
CEE Sega Official was used on console boxes in many countries. Usually seen on EU Mega Drive boxes but also found on Dendy releases in Russia and Hi-Star releases in Singapore. Hi-Star releases also have a Sega WYWY label. It is also known that many consoles that have the CEE logo are also found to include bootleg carts and controllers, as well as (apparent) bootleg consoles. As far as VGCollect is concerned, any box that has a CEE Sega Official logo is to be considered an Official Release until confirmation from Sega is found.
Distributors around the world have a variety of official labelling or their own company logo as a label on the box. Some can be seen below:
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_label-alesayi.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_label-dotts.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_label-hebrew.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_label-thailand.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_mdc_label-wywy.jpg)
Tec Toy vs Tectoy vs TecToy
Tec Toy officially changed their name in 2007 to Tectoy and in 2020 to TecToy. The name used on item entries should match the name that is appropriate with the release. Fortunately, TecToy has also changed their logos over time with exception to the 2020 logo which is the same as their original but with slightly different colors.

Sega Mega CD [AU]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megacdau
Like the Sega 32X Australian releases, the Mega CD releases are typically UK PAL releases with an ACB Rating label and an "Ozisoft" label.
As with all Australian Sega releases, the rating, item number(s) and barcode from the labels should be used on the item entry. The item number and barcode on the game cover and/or media can be put into description.
Rating Label
There are two types of rating labels. The typical ACB rating:
And a Sega Ozisoft Pty Ltd rating. This is not an ACB rating, so do not set the rating on the item entry if this label is present.
Ozisoft Import Label
There are two main types of import label. The first has the Ozisoft name, although sometimes the name is missing.

Some of them are EU cases with an AU cart, EU covers in a silver box, European cases with rating and other labels, US Genesis cases with rating and labels, European blue border cases with labels, AU blue border cases, AU exclusive Gold Collection, AU exclusive Platinum Collection, AU exclusive Double Pack. As well as a couple of red border cover designs that are unique to Australia and have that bootleg look to them but they are official.

Example: https://vgcollect.com/item/165543
And lastly, some games such as Vectorman (https://vgcollect.com/item/166017) were released in VHS sized cases.
Pack-in Releases
Pack-in games use a labelling system unique to Australia. Instead of a Not for Resale notation, they use a label with text Not Permitted for Rental on games using the standard EU covers. Later, AU exclusive "NFR" covers were made where the barcode on the back is replaced by BONUS, SPO1 or AFP. There are some transitionary versions where a label is used to cover the existing barcode.

Some releases may have a small NIAL label on the case.
Sega Classics labels are typically found on import titles, and are considered to be re-releases even though sometimes the only release in Australia has a Sega Classics label. The most common is the black and gold oval label, but a blue square label is also to be found.

- black Sega Mega Drive label in imported Gen releases (Tony La Russa)
Carts
In addition to the typical black plastic cartridge shell, Australia has some exclusive cart shells in silver plastic. Some games were made in both shells, but not all games were released this way.
For cart stampings, some carts may have Sega-Ozisoft stamping or be marked Made in Australia. These carts can be found in EU Mega Drive cases but typically with an Australian manual. The label on the cart may be the EU label or it may be an AU label.

Sega Mega Drive [BR]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megadrivebrazil/
Packaging Types
Most games were released in a plastic case and there are three main types of covers that are used: grid style, red cover with gray Mega Drive text and red cover with "shiny" Mega Drive text.
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/110574.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/138494.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/163485.jpg)
Some games were available with the grid style box and were reprinted with the red cover with "shiny" text. To date, there are no known instances of a game being released with both of the two red cover types.
Very few instances exist where a game was released with the grid style cover but in a cardboard box with 3 tabs (a style used for Master System in Brazil) as well as a plastic case version.
Price Letters
The prices in Brazil are represented in the form of letters with a circle. They can be found on the front or spine of the case and are typically printed and part of the artwork. This information should be put into Description.
There are two important pieces of information that can be found on the covers of these games. It is less so important for the Mega Drive releases and more relating to variations when it comes to Tec Toy's Master System releases, but is provided here as well.

Text on the cover (frase) Produzido sob Licença de SEGA Enterprises.
Sega Special
Some games were reprinted or re-released at a later date, sometimes in their original packaging and others with an updated cover. This label is put on the plastic case and not on the artwork insert. This label is also used for this purpose with Master System releases.
Cartridges
The cart labels are in two main versions, black grid style with the Mega Drive logo (unique to Brazil) or a red border label. They are going to match up to which style cover the box has.
While many games have the typical cartridge shells found elsewhere (company logo/origin of manufacture/patents such as "Sega Made in Japan" etc) there are some releases that have a different type.

Sega Mega Drive [CN]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megadrivecn
This category is for all official releases in China, releases in South East Asia that are not from Japan or Korea, releases in countries there are no separate category for (such as Middle East or Israel), as well as most bootleg games. In regards to bootleg games, for situations where a point of origin cannot be determined or is unknown, they should be put into this category.
Packaging
The official release packaging has a few different looks. There is the grid box with gold Mega Drive logo and a teal border with a unique Mega Drive text logo. Most will have either an "Asian Version" logo on the cover (or as a label) or use a different type of import designation such as a Sega PAL or NTSC label. Some may use a Japanese or European cover with the Asian Version logo. There are a couple cardboard box releases such as the 6-Pak shown below.
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/160685.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/162306.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/165162.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/111944.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/164777.jpg)
labels
Asian Version is sometimes printed on a cover or is a label on imported covers.
As with the consoles already covered, some of the games have a Sega NTSC or PAL label on the front of the game case.
Games imported to Singapore may have a WYWY Group label on the cover.
Games imported to Singapore may have a Hi-Star Electronics label on the cover.
Some imports may have a label with "For Retail Distribution in Asean Only" printed on it.
Games distributed in the Middle East may have a label with text or text on the cover that states "Distributed exclusively in Saudi Arabi, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait & Oman by Al Yousuf Computers"
Cartridges
Sega's official cartridges in the Chinese and SEA region have a notch on the side. Many bootlegs also use this type of cart shell, but do not immediately think that all carts with the notch are bootlegs. The back of an official cart should have a Sega stamp, and a label with a Sega part number.
Carts in Singapore releases may have a white WYWY Group label on the back.
Manual
The grid cover with gold Mega Drive logo have a similarly styled manual with color cover and grayscale interior. Some may have this and also a localised manual.

Description
For any item that is from another country besides China, that country should be put into the description if no TLD is used in the title.

Sega Mega Drive [EU]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megadriveeu/
Games that have UK/England specific releases, where there also is a general EU release (the standard fare of multiple languages being on the back cover) can have the [UK] TLD in the item title.
Packaging
There are two main designs for games released in Europe: the grid cover and the blue or purple border.
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/41813.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/9970.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/80395.jpg)
There are a few different types of re-releases: Classic, Console Classics, Kixx
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/96457.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/114637.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/107876.jpg)
The most common multi-pack to find is the Telstar Double Value Games packs but Codemasters also had their own called Double Hits.
You may come across an oval, blue and white Sega label on European releases. This label is used to "seal" the plastic case games and is put on the side of the case where the two halves of the case close. Often this label is not present on used games, or sometimes it has been moved to the front, back or elsewhere.
The 24 Meg logo is sometimes printed as part of a cover and other times is a label. As with most labels, the location on the packaging can vary greatly.
A few games were released with a white "Smoking - Who Needs It?" label with Knuckles punching a pack of cigarettes. This would be found on the front cover of the game case.
Accolade releases are mostly identical to the US versions with the exception of a different manual, and 1 or 2 labels on the front of the box. These labels are one that notes which language instructions are included and another that mentions "Mega Drive"
France
Many games sold in France will have a red Attention label on the front or back cover.
Germany
Some games released in Germany may have a white label with text Aus der TV-Werbung Sony on the cover. This is an equivalent to "As seen on TV" and so far this particular version is known to be found on two MD games (Lemmings 2 and Tiny Toon Adventures) however other versions are known to exist for (at least) Tiny Toon games on other platforms.
Italy
Some games distributed in Italy (common on some Disney titles) have a Distribuito da Halifax label on the front cover.
Other games distributed by Halifax may not have their logo on the front, rather will have a white label on the back with the CE logo and text Importado da Halifax SRL.

Others were imported by CiDi Verte and will have a CiDi Verte Italia label on the front cover.
Some games were released with an S/I/D label and often these are found in Italy. It can be inferred that the S = Sweden or Svensk, the I = Italian or Italy, but the D could be Denmark or something else. These releases are the same as the regular EU release (besides this label) and they come with a manual that has text Svensk•Italiano•Nederlands. Games with this label should have the [SE][IT][NL] TLDs in the title.
Spain
Games imported to Spain have a variety of different labels. A more common one would be a label to indicate that a Spanish manual is included. The typical one that is seens is the Contiene Instrucciones en Castellano label.
However, there are two others that are known and while it is uncertainly to what extent these are officially, we will consider Spanish games with these labels to be "Official Release" until it can be determined otherwise.
The yellow Manual en Castellano label can be found on Japanese Mega Drive games in Spain. They include a black and white, printed, instruction booklet or card and has the Sega Mega Drive logos from both Japan and Europe.
The yellow Contiene manual de instrucciones en Castellano label has only been found (so far) on copies of Alien 3.
As with other countries, there are some distributors that had imported games and just put their label on them. One such example is New Software Center which has text Distribuido para España por: New Software Center Company, S.L. or Bandai with text Importador: BANDAI Ctra. de Torrelaguna, s/n.
Some releases can be found with a Sega Juego Estrella label on the front cover.
Some releases can be found with a Lamee Software S.L. label on the back cover.
Benelux
Games imported to the Benelux Region (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) have a "Info-Sega Hot-Line" label on the front cover.
Czech Republic
DatArt International distributed games in Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic and will have a labe on the cover with text: DatArt International vat dodavatel výrobků Sega
(https://vgcollect.com/images/style/gen_md_eu_label-cz-datart.jpg)
Portugal
Games sold in Portugal should have the Sega Garantia Portugal label.
They may also have an Ecofilmes label on the back. This label will have a part number and this number should be used on the item entry for item number.
Greece
Sega items sold in Greece have a Zegetron A.E. label on them with text: ΧΡΥΣΗ ΕΓΓΥΗΣΗ 90 HMEPΩN SEGA ΓΕΝΙΚΟΙ ANTI ΠPOΣΩΠOY ZEGETRON A.E.
South Africa
European boxed Mega Drive games with a blue and white "Genuine Sega Product, Distributed by Consumer Electronics (Pty) Ltd" are actually releases from South Africa.
Sweden
There are very few Swedish version releases and most of the games were available as official Sega game rentals. As a result, most of the Swedish game listings in the database are of the rental cases. They are large VHS sized clamshells.
Cartridges
Most games come on carts with a grid label or with a blue type.
The square Electronic Arts carts are the same as the US versions (and usually only 1 label type) but may have revision labels not found on US releases. The common way to determine a cart from a EU release vs a US release is the presence of a CE label, although this label is often missing on EU copies making them (presently) identical to US carts. The EA carts are region free.
The unlicensed Accolade carts are the same as in the US release, as well as the Codemasters carts. The licensed Accolade releases will have the European Mega Drive logo on the label.
Manuals
First party horizontal manuals: color cover grid style, color cover blue style, grayscale blue style

Sega Mega Drive [JP]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megadrivejp
Packaging
There are various different designs from many publishers but the two typical types are the full bleed artwork and the blue border.
Later releases may use Sega's Japanese rating system (https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,8623.msg187586.html#msg187586).
The spines of the cases have the item number which typically will start with G- or T-
On the back of the case is a Sega part number starting with 670- usually above the JAN/barcode.
Cartridges
The cartridges have ridged edges and have a notch on the left.
The cartridge labels may have the item number from the spine on then and their own item number printed on the label.
The back of the cartridge will have a manufacturer stamp and a black and white label with the place of manufacture, as well as the item number for the label itself.

Sega Mega Drive [KR]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megadrivekr
While this category is called Sega Mega Drive, the consoles in Korea are called Samsung Super GamBoy, Samsung Super Aladdin Boy and Samsung Super Aladdin Boy II. There was a later release by Sega of the Mega Drive 2, and proper Sega Mega Drive games were released in Korea after the Samsung run.
Packaging
There are various types of the original Samsung releases.
- Super GamBoy Silver (blue console name and ??? on stripe)
- Super GamBoy Gold (blue console name and ??? on stripe)
- Super Aladdin Boy Gold (red console name and Sonic on stripe)
- Samsung Home (blue border on bottom)
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/162837.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/163477.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/163478.jpg)(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/163479.jpg)
The Korean text on the stripe is:
열려라! 미래나라!
16비트 수퍼겜보이와 함께
새롭께 필쳐지는 께임의
세께를 즐기세요!
General release have Samsung logo or either of the console's names on the cover.
The Sega Mega Drive releases are nearly identical to the Japanese releases except for a Licensing label:
And a black label with text: 화국 총판매대리점 삼성전자주식회사 (Hwaguk General Sales Agency / Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.)
Cartridges
Carts are the same type as in Japan and can be typically identified by having a Samsung logo on the label, or the Hwaguk General Sales Agency text printed on it.
The back of the cartridge will have a label with Korean text.

Sega Mega-CD [JP]
https://vgcollect.com/browse/megacd
This category covers Sega Mega-CD releases for Japan as well as China or elsewhere in South East Asia
Packaging
Most releases come in a CD jewel case, with an Obi Strip/spine card. For the front/back artwork, we prefer that the images used include the Obi Strip.
It is usually that the Obi Strip is what has the JAN (barcode) on it and not on the back cover of the jewel case.

Console Models and Revisions
This is an informational post about the console items themselves, or what is included inside of the items of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Hardware (https://vgcollect.com/browse/genmegadrivehardware) category. The information included here is only relevant to identification of the items and not necessarily their capabilities. Information on motherboard revisions, construction and capabilities can be found at Sega-16.com (https://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones).
This information is just a guide. The information as to what consoles came in what boxes is incomplete. Treat this more of a listing of all the different console models and examples of what boxes they are known to be included in as a way to identify what items you can add to your collection if you just have a loose console. Descriptors have been left off item titles on the links below.

Once the Mega Drive II came around, Sega started to use box sleeves for some game packs. This means that the inner box is typically the equivalent of a Core System in that it is a box with no game notated, and will have 1 or 2 controllers shown on the left or right side of the box. These inner boxes may have a label over the UPC with a new part number or may have a Not for Resale or Not to be Sold Separately label over the original barcode. As a result, some of the "Mega Drive II" box releases documented in the Mega Drive [EU] section may actually not be stand-alone releases and may be inner boxes of game packs. Some instances of these types of releases are known but not yet entered into the database.
