This is an evolving list of free to play games that are, or potentially are releasing on PlayStation. I try to include a diverse list of what seem to be quality titles. This is not a list of every free to play game releasing and for the most part are ones I'm personally interested in keeping track of.
Feel free to share your thoughts on any past, present or future free to play games whether they are listed here or not.
* = ones I'm most interested in
arena shooter / hero shooter
Combat Champions - lower budget version of The Finals (it literally seems to have all the same concepts)
* CrossPlanet - third-person PvP with Halo aesthetics
Histera - FPS with a battlefield that changes on the fly
Setback - arena FPS where instead of dying you are setback in time
Time Takers - colorful, third-person hero shooter with an emphasis on time
battle royale / extraction shooter / survival
ASCENDANT.COM (that's the game's new title) - "The World’s First Adaption Shooter!
Ascendant Infinity (former name) is a squad-based and tactical FPS experience with serious balls."
* Fate Trigger - anime Apex Legends/PUBG
* Exoborne - Arc Raiders with tornadoes
* Mini Royale - green toy army men battle royale
Project Maverick - Far Cry extraction shooter (rebooted early 2025)
Project Astrid - Shroud's AAA open-world survival game with developer Splash Damage
Project Ethos - roguelike extraction hero third-person shooter from 2K
other shooter
Caliber - tactical third-person shooter
* Convallaria - multiplayer third-person action shooter published by Sony
* Gangstar New York - GTA/Watch Dogs style game from Disney Speedstorm devs
* Plan8 - exosuit MMO shooter from DokeV publisher
not a shooter
* DokeV - creature-collecting open world action-adventure
* FreeJack Online - parkour racing game inspired by Jet Set Radio
* Ananta - GTA by NetEase
* Neverness to Everness - GTA by Perfect World
* Sea of Remnants - stylish pirate game by NetEase
* Floatopia - Animal Crossing by NetEase
* SEGA - new Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and Golden Axe (2022 reports indicated CT & JSR being F2P)
Soulframe - Warframe devs Souls game

It may be better to organize your list by genre. On that note, I'm glad that there are more than FPS, hero shooters, and battle royale games, as those genres aren't ones I find interesting. I generally don't play free-to-play games, but I may try out two or three (very) briefly sometime later on.
MultiVersus - Smash Bros. with DC/WB/Cartoon Network characters.
I've heard about this game, but I didn't know that it'd be free.
DokeV: A monster collecting game I think with very impressive visuals.
I'm not sure how I feel about its art style (https://cdn.mmoculture.com/mmo-images/2021/08/DokeV-image-2021.png). It seems a little off-putting. It may just be the children aspect.

Good idea, I'll also probably add more games that are currently released like Brawhalla which is another free to play "platform fighter".

One game I'm honestly excited for that's free to play (coming later this month) is called Be Funny Now. It's created by jacksfilms, one of my favorite YouTubers, and I can't wait to try it once it releases. On the 3DS, some other Free to play games I know of on the 3DS are Stretchmo (a game in the Pushmo series), Steel Diver Sub Wars and Pokemon Picross (Neither of which I tried). Nintendo Badge Arcade and Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (both of which require in-game purchases to progress past a certain point).
I can't think of any others unless you count games that you unlocked with Club Nintendo points or My Nintendo points.

I've played a lot of Nintendo Badge Arcade even though it took about five minutes just to load it.

The one I'm waiting for is Gundam Evolution, unfortunately I couldn't participate to the test because I missed the information.
I had made the beta of KartRider one or two years ago but I don't expect it especially.
Disney speedstorm interests me, I registered for the beta.

I'm excited for Gundam Evolution. I registered for KartRider but wasn't selected. Disney Speedstorm is an interesting one, not sure if it's gonna be completely different from the publisher's Asphalt series or not.

Realm Royale is back and better than ever in Realm Royale Reforged!
This game that was briefly popular four years ago just got a new update after being dead for over two years. A team of just nine developers have brought new changes to the game that the very tiny remaining fanbase wanted. Pretty interesting as that's something you don't see happen a lot. There's also a lot of free rewards for returning and new players. Might be worth checking out and it's a rather small download. Under 6 GB on PlayStation.

The Sims 4 will be going free on October 18 on all platforms. It's about time for a game with so much DLC.
-
Tray Racers! is releasing on Nintendo Switch April 13!

Very popular battle royale (just under 200k concurrent players on Steam) Naraka: Bladepoint has now transitioned to free to play and is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Not PS4 yet.

I played it abit before on Game Pass and it's pretty fun. I'll probably check it out some more now that it's F2P.
-
I wrote abit about Naraka in another thread, but it's pretty good. I've played it a bunch the past couple days, probably a good time to jump into right now as it's both the F2P launch and the 2nd anniversary, so there's a bunch of free stuff to get, along with Twitch drops. I bought an outfit or two for kicks, but just playing for awhile will net you a handful of hero coins to unlock more heroes to play. If you don't like the F2P, microtransaction, live service, thing, this won't changer your mind, that's all here with a battle pass, but I've gotten more than a few real nice things out of the lootboxes so far outfit and weapon skin wise.

Most Any game before 2004 should be legal to stream in a Browser for Or sometimes even download off retro ROM websites
Not modern? But hey there free to both download and play or one or the other. On PC

Finally, Gundam Evo will end in November...

The FBI is watching though.

yes indeed I know them well but not personally

Star Wars: Hunters is finally releasing on Switch June 4th.
-
Splitgate 2 has been announced! It releases next year on PS4, PS5, Xbone, Xbox Series, Steam and EGS. I loved the first Splitgate and played it a ton, probably my second most played free to play game after Fortnite. Very happy it's going to be on PS4. Hopefully some of my stuff from the first game carries over.
-
A game named Fuzzball that was released as a paid game is now free on console.
-
Foamstars will become free to play in October!
-
Wizard101 is coming to consoles. Wow.
-
A year after launch The Finals is releasing on PS4! Wow! Looking forward to checking it out.

Kinda wild it's going to be on PS4 honestly, wonder how it'll run as on my older PC, it wasn't the best. I personally thought the game was just alright, the destruction is cool, but I found the modes abit boring other than one of them, which wasn't enough to keep me playing it. If they ever brought in a bigger player count mode, like a 20 to 30 person TDM mode, that would be kinda the only way I'd get interested.

Splitgate 2 is releasing May 22! (technically in open beta but the beta won't end until it launches)

skate. is out now (in Early Access) on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series!
I always found the Skate games to have a hard to learn control scheme but the new control scheme makes a lot more sense, the original controls are still available though.
So far the game is pretty enjoyable, feels like Tony Hawk's Project 8 or Proving Ground with the vibe of it but without any appearances from pro skaters. From what I've played so far it's kind of like single player with the mission structure but you'll see other players around.
You can earn basic cosmetics just from playing the missions but of course being a free to play game they really want to let you know that there's premium items available in the shop such as a Grim Reaper costume for ~$27 and some Vans branded stuff for ~$16.
-
ARC Raiders is
suddenly no longer going to be free, it's now $40.
I guess not suddenly, maybe that's why I had already removed it from the list.
-
Wizard101 is launching on consoles October 9th. It's more free to start than free to play, except on Switch where it's $20 for some reason.
If this sounds familiar to you and you don't know what it is, it's a video game from 2008 that often aired commercials on TV.

Highguard is out and it is not Concord 2. It's closer to Apex Legends mixed with Rainbow Six Siege. The developer refers to it as a PvP raid shooter.

I hate that "It's Concord 2" is gonna be a thing now, it really undercuts how big of a disaster Concord was. It's definitely not an interesting game though, 3v3 is such a terrible idea, makes a reasonably large map size, even if it has ways to corral people, feel empty and boring. I wasn't gonna be into it even if it was like 5v5, because I just can't get into small scale hero shooter anymore and if I was gonna do anything hero shooter, I'd just go back to Marvel Rivals, that's at least got a dedicated player base and fun characters.
It's a shame, because I like the general gameplay idea, different objectives and phases, could be fun, but just make it like...not a hero shooter. If this was like crazy fantasy/scifi fps with bigger teams where you trade back and forth base defense, that could be fun.

I actually enjoy Highguard and have played each day but yeah 3v3 is a really baffling decision. Comparing the map sizes in this game compared to Splatoon (which is 4v4) is hilarious.
I'd like to see 5v5 or more, faster respawns especially when defending a raid, not having to spawn at your base in the early game and having the 5 wall defense things from the start of the game refresh after a raid.
-
They added 5v5 to Highguard!

They added 5v5 to Highguard!
That's wild, I'm kinda wondering if they were worried about 3v3 from the start so were already considering adding that, but to do it so fast, even if just in an experimental state is crazy turnaround lol This doesn't really "fix" the game, I think it's still kinda bland and I'd rather see something larger than 5v5 (Which would in turn have to change the game from being less of a hero shooter), but you know what, I'll poke around for another match, why not lol

Well, mass layoffs at the studio that made Highguard.

Well, mass layoffs at the studio that made Highguard.
That's rough, I knew it was gonna be a struggle for them, but I thought at most they'd just tough it out for a few months to try and turn things around, add a lot, patch it up, try to see if they can turn the numbers around, they are a new studio and it's their only game, they kind have to make it work. To just immediately layoff most of the team makes it feel like they went beyond their means, with expectations far past anything they were gonna get, like they expected this to do Marvel Rivals numbers or something. Which was never gonna happen, because the game is light on content, it has an odd player count for a mode, and the stuff they were selling were just kinda okay. It also released in a real sloppy state, as it was clearly not ready for launch and probably needed another couple months of development.
Kinda wondering if its going to come out that this launch was a thing only because they were looking at running out of funding and so they had to release it no matter what in the hopes it takes off enough to keep funding the game...just sad to see.
*EDIT* It wasn't a studio shutdown level of layoffs, apparently they are going to continue supporting Highguard, so it sounds more like they were trimming jobs to to slim down and then will try to tough it out, see if they can't turn the player numbers around after adding some content and updates.

Highguard shuts down March 12th.

Highguard shuts down March 12th.
Just such a poorly handled game. There is a good game in what they created, but it needed a whole lot more to be interesting and needed a lot more work before ever seeing release.

I didn't realize that The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is a free to play game. It's releasing on the 16th and can be pre-ordered for $9.99 for bonuses, I think it will be free to play that day as well, if not it will be on March 23rd.
You can pre-register now for bonus stuff: https://7origin.netmarble.com/en/playstation
I also completely missed the new HoYoverse game Varsapura reveal which seems to be their take on Control: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NccLyRQQZY
More free to play games expected this year on PS5 and available for wishlisting:
Sea of Remnants (pirate game)
Once Human (already released on PC, survival game)
Fate Trigger (anime Fortnite)
Exoborne (exosuit extraction shooter)
Neverness to Everness (anime GTA, not to be confused with Ananta which is similar)
Time Takers (third person hero shooter)
