Title: Gaming/Collecting Goals for 2026
Post by: bikingjahuty on December 16, 2025, 10:48:55 pm
It's crazy we're only about two weeks off from the new year. I've been thinking about what my gaming and collecting goals are for next year, and I always find it interesting to see what other people have in the works too. So yeah, let's hear your gaming and collecting goals for 2026!

As far as my gaming and collecting goals go, I'm once again leaning way more into the gaming end of things this year. Still, I have some collecting goals in mind, although they are less of a priority for me. Speaking of priorities, the importance of the goals are listed in descending order, with #1 being the most important and #4 being the least important.

1. Complete the 52 Games Challenge again - I look forward to this every year. I'd even say I got a bit carried away with it this year (123 games beat at the time I'm writing this). For 2026 I have almost no doubt of reaching 52, and probably exceeding it by a decent amount. There are various things I semi-neglected in 2025 that I need to focus on a bit more next year, so this will eat up some of my gaming time, but I still wouldn't be surprised to see my final games beat tally end up around 80ish or so. I have doubts I'll reach triple digits again, but we'll see.

2. Continue to work on Game Preservation project - This is something I haven't really discussed on here before, but a couple years ago I decided that I pretty much wanted backup copies of every game I even have the tiniest amount of interest in going back to the NES and Master System and going all the way up to the 7th generation of consoles. The modern landscape of game preservation and support to play those games kinda scares me, and I want to ensure i always have a copy of every game I've ever wanted to play, even though I know I'll never even remotely come close to being able to play them all in my lifetime. I plan on building out a RAID array next year with several 16TB drives. I may go larger than this, but from my calculations, 16TB should do the trick. I just need to get the funds together to do this and also continue to track down all the games I want which is becoming harder and harder these days.

3. Add more Switch games to that collection - I've been really enjoying building my Switch collection as of late. Between the titles I know I want and the seemingly endless amount of games I never knew even existed on it until I find them in a store or stumble upon them online, there is so much I want to get on the console still. Let's say 20 new games on the Switch in 2026.

4. Buy my first Pinball machine (maybe) - Because of space, money, or it just not being a good time to do so, I've put off getting a pinball machine for a long time now. However, with me being on pace to pay off one of my cars in 2026, some funds will open up for me to finally get one. I really want to get a Stern Jurassic Park machine, but there are a few others on my short list as well. This goals is one I won't feel bad for not meeting, but it would still be amazing to finally get a pinball machine I can play whenever I want.

Gaming goals:
To play through as many games from my collection as possible, with focus on my pile of shame and my aging PlayStation RPGs.

Collection goals:
Not many, but if I get a chance to fill up my growing Game Gear cartridge collection, I'm buying! (Got almost 60% of full deck)
AND I'm interested in purchasing some vtech edutainment systems, such as V.Smile ... those come cheap but I didn't start collecting it yet ...

I've no goals for 2026. Modern gaming just isn't what it used to be but it does seem that this generation is finally begining to take off after years of stagnation.

I'll attempt the 52 game challenge again, but may not make it to 20.

The games I'll play, I simply hope to have fun with. That's the best goal I can come up with.

Out of curiosity, where does your interest in the VTech games come from? Are they games you'd consider fun enough to actually want to play?

Nah, not really, I just think the V.Smile system looks funky and as a 90s kid from Germany, Vtech actually is a well known and liked brand overall ... I got to learn that those Vtech consoles existed just a few months ago actually. It would probably become one of the parts of my collection that I just collect because it looks and feels exotic.

I don't really try to "enjoy" this toy as a gamer  ;D ;D ;D I'm just interested in the system. Cartridges look weird and are purple aging to grey  ::) and the controllers look like they really suck ergonomicaly. I like such curiosities in my gaming room...

It could be interesting shelf candy I guess. well enjoy the hunt hope there aren't any grails for the system that cost an arm and a leg.

As some may have noticed based on my limited games completed output this last quarter of the year, I have not been playing games as much for various reasons. As the beginning of the new year nears, I don't expect that to change for the foreseeable future either. It's not that I've grown tired of playing games, but I've been investing my free time in other activities lately that I don't think will change. In October, I devoted the majority of my free time toward watching one movie per day and then writing my thoughts for it; since November, I've been learning how to DM for D&D and planning for an upcoming campaign that's planned to begin proper early next month that I'm creating myself; and of course, there are other activities I devote free time toward. Having less time available for games may not be the case always, though. Although I will also mention that the amount of free time I have in general is also something I anticipate being more sparse going forward. Accordingly, I neither anticipate being able to complete 2026's 52 Game Challenge.

With that said, I still have gaming goals for 2026, all of which relate to playing habits:
• Continue playing the Resident Evil franchise
• Prioritize playing shorter games in general
• Play more short-length indie games on PC
• Play through one Yakuza game

For 2025, all of my goals relate to playing habits.

• Finish Silent Hill franchise
• Begin Resident Evil franchise
• Play PlayStation VR
• Play through PlayStation major franchise entries
• Play one Final Fantasy game
• Play games for as many platforms as I can that are available to me
• Play an even greater variety of game genres than I did in 2024
• Play more short-length indie games on PC

After going back to look at my goals for 2025, I actually completed all but one (to play PlayStation VR) to some degree, although Final Fantasy ended up being substituted with other RPGs including Octopath Traveler and Persona 3 Reload. Besides Resident Evil, I did end up trying out other noteworthy PlayStation titles including Battle Arena Toshinden, Jumping Flash!, and Tekken, but I wasn't able to complete any of them. I really wanted to complete a prolific fighting genre game, but I just don't think I have the skill or the patience to hone such skills to be able to.

This happens to me from time to time and it generally impacts my output of games beat quite a bit. I remember I went through a console modding phase back in 2021 and I think between like February and June that year I beat like 3 games. I think it's perfectly normal and healthy to change things up when it comes to hobbies, and also to take as long of a break as you need to from a specific one if you're feeling burnt out or just feel your interest slipping.

That's cool you've got into DnD so much. I used to play it a lot back in the early 2000s back around the time third edition was released. I had two friends in particular who I used to play with and we had a blast playing all weekend. I can't remember why I ever got out of it, but it's something I've considered jumping into from time to time. I sort of feel like I already have too many hobbies and interests to add another, but who knows.

I forgot to go over my 2025 goals lol

Beyond my goal to continually prune my current collection down, I only have one real collecting goal for 2025:

1. Beat 100 games: I've stated it in other threads on here, but with nothing major currently planned for 2025, my ambition this year is to beat more games in a single year than I ever have. My goal is 100 games beat by the end of the year.

2. Finish all the remaining Resident Evil games I've never played: At the moment, I've played every RE game outside 7, 8, the Wii lightgun games, and the mobile games. I don't care about the mobile games, but I do plan on beating those other ones, which means I will not only have played and beat every RE game ever made, but also I'll finally be caught up with this series after being almost two decades behind as of the end of 2023. I am also adding a replay of the original RE4 to this since I haven't played it since around the time it came out in the mid 2000s.

3. Add at least 10 Switch games from my want list: With the Switch in its twlight years, I've decided I'm going to actively pursue the 30 or so games on my want list that I don't yet own. Many of these are first party releases that I slept on for years after they came out, but some are on the more obscure side. I'll probably prioritize those more obscure releases since they likely have the greatest chance of becoming expensive and hard to find as time goes on.

I definitely completed goals 1 and 3 this past year, and debatably I also completed goal #2. The only reason I hesitate to call my Resident Evil goal good is because while I did catch up on all the mainline RE games as well as a few spinoff titles, I still have one more of the Wii lightgun games to play, as well as Revelations 2. While I already beat it many years ago, I also want to replay the original RE4. I beat that game in 2005, the same year it came out and remember really liking it, but I'm long overdo to give it another play through.

I definitely agree. But for me in this moment in particular, it's really just about not having the amount of time to divide to all my active interests and not about becoming disillusioned or anything with video games. A group activity like D&D will inevitably take priority over singular activities (or it should, anyway.)

I've only played for a few years now with my only experience in 5e, though I still very much feel like a beginner since my group isn't able to play regularly. So far, we've had two periods of 3–4 months without playing on account of conflicting schedules. Right now, the group is only myself and three players, but we're divided between west coast, east coast, and two players in Japan, so obviously there is far less available time for us all to meet. Maybe in time we'll recruit someone else or one of the few who've had to break from the group will return. Even if that'd only increase scheduling challenges, I think having more players would be worth it. I had never really considered DMing before, but the previous DM reached out to me hoping I would since they're wanting to be a player again. Really, I never thought I'd ever even play D&D at all, but being invited to play makes it easier than finding the motivation to find or build a group yourself. Hopefully DMing works out and I grow more comfortable in the role so preparing for sessions comes easier than how it's felt so far.

I don't really have a gaming goal. The closest I can think of is maybe to finally write a program that can automatically refactor Major League Manager rosters instead of having to do it manually every time.

As for collection goal, I'll be honest and say it will probably involve me downsizing considerably. Having gone all out on the 52 Games challenge the past couple of years has really shown to me that I don't really like most of the games that I have. I've also fallen onto into the convenience trap where I'm much more likely to just play games on my computer than fiddle around on a console. Part of that reason is the unreliability of my AVRs, they aren't working properly anymore thus I can't play games on them. Also my life is going in a different direction and I haven't really been playing anything. I played Diablo III last night for a few hours and that was the first time in exactly 6 months that I played a game. I'm still not counting MLM because that's more of a project.

I think my only gaming goal is to get make either FF Tactics or SaGa Frontier my 150th platinum. I'm not sure which one yet, but either one will be exciting. I've been enjoying planning out which games I'll be playing en route, too.

Speaking from experience, I have no regrets downsizing over the last few years. Downsizing has made me appreciate what I did end up keeping even more and also freed up a decent amount of space. In a weird sort of way, it made me also enjoy games more since it helped me refocus on the games I actually wanted to play versus the games I wanted to own. I still really care about physical ownership of my games, but at least with retro games, I use ODEs and flashcarts most of the time out of convenience. But yeah, I definitely have been somewhat disenchanted with collecting for a while now.

I am focused on getting more N64 games. I have 180ish out of 296. now I have a 64DD too, but i lack the Retail version. I really want to get a whole set of each of these. Definitely not easy on the 64 DD. I have 8 out of the 10 disks already.

They are pretty fun for the most part. The communications disc and randnet discs are the least usable discs. I like mario artist paint etc. Doshin 1 and sim city 64 need more Japanese to enjoy. I know a lot of basic Japanese. I wish I knew more though. All I need is doshin 2 and japan pro golf tour 64.

Around fall of 2024 I swore that I wouldn't buy another video game for a year, time FLEW buy and I had less struggle with it than I expected. I'm tempted to extend the challenge for another year. However, I still don't have a copy of Halo 4, and I just found out that the H4 Game of The Year edition which I have been weirdly drawn to for years is about 8 bucks on ebay (there isn't any exclusive content for me since it was all in the form of download codes  :( , yet the cover looks cool and I just love feeling like I have the most complete version of the game in a GOTY edition).

With generally not planning to buy games or even have time for playing them next semester (Past more Mario party nights off of Switch Online n64 with my roommates) the only things I can see myself picking up realistically are peripherals and the like.

I still only have one ps3 controller, and while all my games are still singleplayer, it would be forward thinking to have another. Likewise with the xbox 360, I need a few more if I am going to have a Halo reach LAN party like I am planning.

I have a copy of pokemon silver from a family friend with a dead save battery. At some point in time I need to go through the effort of replacing it, but I am intimidated by the task.

Widdle my ps4 list down to the final 100 titles (I've about 250 left for the set at present).

Grab some more PS1 longbox titles. I have 50+ titles left to finish the longbox set.

Obtain some missing guncon sets and namco peripherals on PS1 and PS2.

Do some work on my game room Reno (electrical, lighting, flooring, bathroom...)

Play some more games. Fix PS4 Kiosk TV. Get some switch boxes for multiple consoles on CRT component line. Get Dual link ps1 and ps2 setup for lightgun and link cable games. Get pulldown Projector screen. Get pullout bed sofa seating and gaming chairs.

My 2026 goals:

Finish my Switch collection, as I only need 13 games to have all the games I want for that console. Might not make it due to how expensive they are.

Continue adding PS4/Xbox One games from my wish list to my collection. Said list has gotten much smaller in 2025, as I did the math and realized it would take me about 5 years to replay all the games in my existing PS4 collection once. That hit hard once I realized I probably only have another 25-30 years of life left, and want to replay all of my games multiple times. So I went back to my list and got rid of everything that didn't feel like a must-play. I settled on about 65 PS4/Xbox One games and 13 Switch games out of the over 150 combined that used to be on my list. The funny thing is I can't even remember most of the games I deleted.

Get an AYN Odin 2 Portal while they're still on the market. I really like the look of that handheld, and I'm disappointed that the Odin 3 just doesn't look as cool.

Start collecting Evercade VS-R cartridges. I got the console in November and really like it. I'll probably end up getting 10-15 cartridges for it total.

Replace my PS4's 5TB external HDD with 2 4TB SSDs. I'll need the extra space as my collection grows, the current drive is almost full.
