$3,116,829 now! Radonkulous!

I have decided to take the plunge and get one of the $225 models, at least after I get the wife's ok :D
Now I just need to decide what I want my user name to be. I am thinking that something with future resale value would be best rather than just my normal user name.

Here's an article you might find interesting: http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/the-reality-of-the-ouya-console-doesnt-match-the-hype-why-you-should-be-ske

I’m a sucker for a new system, if their willing to try something new I’m will to drop $99 on it to get in the action. This system reminds me of the Onlive system, a lot of skepticism but so far Onlive has been grate for me so I’ll give this one a chance also. Does anyone know if the OUYA system is going to have built in memory, memory cards or will they go with cloud gaming also? I know Sony has picked up on the cloud gaming bandwagon and most game developers believe cloud gaming is the way to go and the way to get game prices back down to what they use to be.

OUYA + http://xbmc.org/theuni/2012/07/13/xbmc-for-android/ = awesome!
-
It's an interesting concept, but I have ZERO interest or intent to support a game console that doesn't use physical media. I'm a gamer and a collector; leaving out part of the equation just doesn't work for me. I'd prefer to drop that $100 into retro games for my collection rather than ports of phone games.
-
I’m with you on that blipcs76 but I was a gamer before I was a collector so the gaming aspect and experience comes first for me, collecting and building a collection is just the byproduct of gaming for me.
Also I am getting a new game system for my collection

I'm a gamer and a collector; leaving out part of the equation just doesn't work for me. I'd prefer to drop that $100 into retro games for my collection rather than ports of phone games.
Why thank you, blips76!
You just helped me cut this post that I'm making almost in half :)
Not only do I feel the exact same as you in this...and, since I was about to post pretty much the exact same thing...since I couldn't have stated/said that part of it any better myself -Now- I don't *Have* to bother re-typing & repeating what you just said :P
Now, I'm not really trying to take anything away from what killerchameleon brought up in his following post, either...because I can (and do) *Totally* see his point about being a "GAMER", a "COLLECTOR"; and where being both at the same time can potentially bring up issues & circumstances where you could possibly have to be *Less* of one to be *More* of the other (that is, that by being strictly (or even primarily) a "collector") and insisting on only buying & supporting games & consoles that have/support "true" *Ownership* of the games & systems that you buy & support...via offering (at the *VERY* *LEAST*) a
*PHYSICAL* option (version/it's fine if the games *ALSO* have Digital-Download/'Cloud' versions/options/alternatives) of the games available for the system...at the same time...it's quite clear & obvious that people like blips76 (*AND* people like Myself) are lessening & limiting the amount of games/choices that we would then have access to play by *NOT* buying & supporting anything that offers *NO* physical game options at all...
At the end of the day, though...I am:
A). A Gamer,
B). A Collector,
C). A "set-in-his-ways" 'Creature of Habit', and, lastly (and quite possibly, most relevantly & importantly)
D). A grown-man who is, in *MANY* ways, undoubtedly seen by many other & younger gamers & collectors as...
*OLD-FASHIONED*.
Now, this is all fine by me since all of the things that I could consider myself (or be seen by others) as signs of being old-fashioned for...are all intentional. These things are all of my own personal choices & preferences and simply reflect "A" over "B".
Back to addressing killerchameleon's post and thoughts & feelings regarding the loss of potential future games to play by being completely *ANTI* any 'Digital-Only' games & systems...
He's right!
By choosing to stick to supporting only games/systems that still offer games in a physical form...the more time that goes by (which, of course, will keep bringing more & more "technological advancements") if, you do indeed personally see less and less physical games (and less (to eventually *ZERO*)) actual, physical 'Ownership', rights, and options to trade & re-sell the games that you've paid for as "progress" and/or an "advancement" (which, *I* *DON'T*, btw)...then yes, undoubtedly it's a fact that the people who do support, buy, and play these games will have the access & abilities to play a great many games that I never will ;)
You know what, though? While (in my younger years) the very thought that "YOU" might have something (in this case, the ability to play games that I'd surely enjoy playing for myself)...I would have felt...honestly...probably...petty, spiteful, and maybe (prolly) even jealous of anyone/everyone who had something/access to something that I didn't...to the point where I would have likely went as far as to actually go & buy whatever it was that let others do/play things that I wanted to but couldn't; *even* if I knew that I'd never *USE* the damned thing :P
Now, though, w/ hundreds of unplayed (mostly Looooong-Ass RPG's & SRPG's) in my backlog - I would honestly not only be just fine w/ never owning another "new"/"next-gen" system or the games to play on it; *BUT*, I'd be secure in the knowledge that I already own enough games where I could continuously, for the remainder of my life, play nothing but games that I've never played yet :)
It's not even just some kind of "collector" vs. "gamer" kind of debate or struggle for me, either.
I'm also the same w/ my magazine subscriptions.
I never have & never will/would think to ever swich from printed paper magazines to digital ones...even if it meant that I'd get more content & get it sooner by going the digital route.
I don't have (or want, in the least) a smart phone - all I want out of a cell-phone is to be able to make/get calls.
I completely *ABHORE* where console gaming (and consoles themselves) are presently.
I don't *WANT* and I *NEVER* use more than 1/2 of the dumb-ass "media-center", "cross-connectivity", fucking HULU, Netflix, whatever the fuck other bullshit that's been added to our consoles (again, under the phrasing of "advancement"/"progress"...this stupid shit literally makes me sick >:(
How about, we go back to consoles that only
*PLAY* THE FUCKING GAMES!!!
Lose all of this other "functionality" -
Give me back my gaming consoles that were actually consoles just for playing games on -
Back before consoles were launching for ~ $600.00, and we had to pay to buy DLC to get "the full experience", and when games (like DQ VIII) had immense amounts of content & hundreds of hours of playability...but *Didn't* have shit on the disc already that we'd have to pay more money to unlock!!!
Sorry guys - guess this has been building up in me & I needed to vent it.

Yeah! What he said!
-
OUYA is supporting Onlive that's a game changer.
-
Building on what disgaeniac was talking about, I feel the same way about movies. In addition to my game collection, I also have a movie collection with over 700 DVDs and nearly 200 Blu-Rays. I like the ability to watch what I want, when I want without having to worry if the movie is available to stream or not. If it's on my shelf, I can watch it whenever I want. I've had stuff in my Netflix queue I was planning to watch expire and vanish. That won't happen with a disc. Plus the quality and features of blu-ray can't be matched by any streaming service.
If you find awesome games you like in digital-only format, that's great. But what happens if you want to play it ten years from now and the developer is out of business? Unless you can find somewhere that's hosting the cracked files, you'll never play it again. It's essentially gone forever. A disc or cartridge will work as long as the media and electronics hold up.
While services like Netflix are extremely convenient, they also expose the flaw in giving one company control over what you have access to. And I don't blame Netflix for the lack of content, I blame Hollywood. They, not Netflix, are the ones dictating what movies and TV shows they will allow Netflix to stream. I really doubt you'll ever see Star Wars or Disney classics on Netflix because there's too much incentive for the studios to keep selling you those movies over and over again (I've owned The Nightmare Before Christmas on VHS, then DVD, now Blu-Ray). And that's another huge flaw in digital distribution, we as consumers are giving complete control over what we see, listen to or play to the corporations. They want everything to be all-digital so they can have a stranglehold on distribution and cut out both used sales and the retail middleman, therefore boosting their profits -- once physical media is gone, they can set the price at whatever they want.
This is what they want and they've convinced millions of young people that convenience is more important than quality or rights to ownership.
-
I wouldn't call OnLive on OUYA a game changer... Mostly because I already knew it was gonna feature it.
Is it cool that it has the feature? Sure. But, for most people, I see it more as a way for people to demo games before buying them since I still can't imagine playing a full game in blurry lower-res graphics with input lag due to latency, when I could play them better on my computer.
-
Well I think it is, OUYA was original designed to play demos and free ware but now you will be able to play full retail games on the system if that’s not a game changer then I don’t know what is. I don’t know if you ever played on Onlive but from my experience I can’t see a difference from a game like Aliens vs. Predator on the Onlive from the Xbox version. Matter a fact I feel like I have more disconnect issues with Xbox while playing multiplayer than latency issues with Onlive. I guess as I get older I’m getting tired of all the clutter and just want one box with all my games movies where I don’t have to change out discs or have massive amounts of storage to keep it all. I’ve embraced digital media and I like it.

@BLIPS76:
Wow!
I'm really amazed (and pleasantly surprised:) at how similarly the two of us see & feel about this issue :P
I mean, I'm sure that there are others who see things (*and* *See What's Coming*) the same way that you & I do...*BUT*, I fear that we are greatly out-numbered :'(
I mean, IMHO, there's a pretty damned easy solution and/or *COMPROMISE* that could/would resolve these problems concerning the differences between what the producers/publishers want, what the gamers (the ones who will stop buying & supporting *ANY* and *EVERYTHING* that offers nothing in a physical format and takes away our *RIGHTS*to ownership, lending, selling, buying, trading, and yes...even re-selling - if we wish to) want, and what the other group of gamers (the one's who are in favor of/looking forward to a "more convenient" and (supposedly) less expensive format where everything becomes 100% *digital-only* vs. 0% (*Ownership*/*Physical*) mediums...
My (and, btw, I'm *FAR* from being a rocket-scientist or genius or anything like that) "Simple" solution that would take all 3 groups into account, while, at the same time, giving & providing each one of those 3 groups w/ *exactly* what it is that they want...
My "Answer" is simply this:
Do Them...ALL ;)
Since the pubs/producers want to cut-down on the amount of used games sold, and since there's (*obviously*) a large enough group of gamers who will be satisfied w/ a strictly digital-only format to be viable & profitable to those pubs/devs...*BUT*...What these (I would think some-what, at least; educated executives) seem to be missing...or...possibly just...*IGNORING*...
Is that there is *ALSO* another (largely profitable & viable demographic) - that they will be losing in their entirety :
*THOSE OF US WHO ARE DONE & GONE THE MINUTE THAT THE OPTION TO GAME W/ PHYSICAL GAMES THAT WE ACTUALLY OWN (ONCE WE'VE FORKED OVER OUR CASH TO PAY FOR THEM).
So, here is my proposal (& explanation) of what I meant when I said to "just do it all":
- Using todays' average cost of a new AAA PS3/360 game of ~$60
-If they can make their digital games so much more cheaply (and save *the consumer* $ (which, *I* wouldn't believe until I saw it) - and even if I saw it - I would certainly never have any amount of trust/faith in any of these companies *not* to raise the prices of digital-only games down the road)/by which I wean, why the hell *wouldn't* they raise the prices of new games to outrageous & obscene amounts once they've taken/we've given-up & surrendered all of our rights & demands for physical ownership?!
But, say I'm wrong -and- these companies *Really* want to do nothing more than make games available to gamers for lower & more reasonable prices...just out of the goodness of their hearts & their over-whelming care & consideration of saving their customers money...
Fucking Awesome!
Do IT!
Make, say, Uncharted 4 available to everyone who wants it digitally for $30.00 (They'll be thrilled to "own" the digital code -I mean "version") at 1/2 the price that it woulld have cost them before!
NOW...Make it available to those of it who want to be able to touch, hold, and see lined-up on our shelves these items that we worked, saved, and made sacrifices/cuts in our lives to buy *PHYSICALLY*
...for the same old $60...I'd pay the difference to hold onto my right of ownership.
And seriously, the gamers who *want* the games "Only-Digitally" for lower prices...aren't gonna' be the ones looking to buy used copies anyhow.
I know/I know...and I apologize in advance againg for yet another one of my:
/*RANT*ing/*BLOGS*.

I don’t know if you ever played on Onlive but from my experience I can’t see a difference from a game like Aliens vs. Predator on the Onlive from the Xbox version.
I did play OnLive, specifically the PC app since I don't want to buy the OnLive console (and won't need to once I get an OUYA). Specifically I played the Borderlands trial on OnLive and then the game on my PC directly... and there was no doubt that the OnLive version looked a lot worse, with lower resolution, a lot more blurryness and it was a lot grainier. Add to that the fact that my guns weren't always shooting at the same time I was clicking my mouse in OnLive, but they were in the game on my computer... The difference was blatant.

Hm... this was just posted this morning:
We’ve been saying that OUYA will offer all kinds of games.
This morning, we are honored to announce that OUYA is partnering with Square Enix to bring you one of the most beloved franchises in gaming -- Final Fantasy. We will kick this off with Final Fantasy III, which will be a launch title on OUYA. This will be the first time gamers outside of Japan can play FFIII on their televisions through a console.
But that’s not the end of it: We’re promising to deliver Final Fantasy III like you’ve never seen it before – Hironobu Sakaguchi’s third installment in the role playing game franchise will be updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail. For those of you who are new to Final Fantasy, we’ll offer a free demo so you can give it a go!
Previously unreleased in the U.S. until it appeared as a 3D remake for the Nintendo DS in 2006, Final Fantasy III was widely referred to as one of the “missing pieces” in the FF series. OUYA players can now proudly claim this piece of the puzzle.
We’re thrilled to bring this storied franchise to OUYA.

I don't see the big deal here. It's just the Android version of the DS game, which costs more than the DS version anyways. They really need to start showing games that aren't already the same thing you can get on a smartphone.
I mean, I'm getting an OUYA (pledged on the first day) but it's gonna need more than an old DS game to impress me.
-
My PC is connected to my TV. I also have game systems on the TV. I really would have no use for such a thing. It would be a downgrade in my opinion.
-
Hm, "updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution" might be interesting, but now I'm starting to wonder how much these actual games will cost us. I never buy anything on PSN as I always think they're overpriced, and I only buy stuff on XBLA when I'm able to get points cards for cheap. I still prefer my DS physical copy of FFIII, but we'll see what happens at launch.
And in regard to games being no different from what you can play on a smartphone, if there's an added multiplayer feature for games being played on the OUYA, that might be of interest, too.

Last week (with a strange brown version now) to fund this if you want to jump on the bandwagon.
Kinda informative/interesting article here:
http://kotaku.com/5931116/the-ouya-is-an-android-tablet-without-a-screen-but-its-better-than-that?utm_campaign=socialflow_kotaku_twitter&utm_source=kotaku_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow
Wondering if I should chip in the extra $30 for the second controller or not. Will certainly be interesting to see how this affects Android game development (if at all).
-
Won't be too much longer before we get our OUYAs. I read that some of the developers were complaining about the controllers, so I'm glad they were willing to go back and make some changes based on the feedback (with the deadline to ship to regular backers coming up so soon):
http://www.ouya.tv/its-all-about-control/
I hope it's good. The controller is so vital...
-
Looks like a 360 controller (which would be ideal IMO):

And yet, I still don't care about this thing at all.
-
Ha, well this is the first time I've even herd of it. I really don't see a point in owning it TBH.

It's ok. You were still gone when we were talking about it's Kickstarter project on the forum. :P
-
I somehow missed this thing too. When I get home later, Im going to read about it ... I dont know what to think of it yet.
-
Right now, I'd have to say that I'm w/ Darko & Scott on this...
-
I don't blame y'all - the Kickstarter project created a lot of hype for it so we'll see if it lives up to it. It also seems to have encouraged other similar items:
http://www.gamestick.tv/
http://shield.nvidia.com/
-
So basically its a wireless plug and play with optional games? I suppose that couldnt be too bad if the optional games are worth playing.
-
I was really close to backing the project for a Limited Edition one but in the end the cost was just too high for it. I hope that it does well but not so well that MS, Sony and Nintendo start thinking that digital is the way to go right now.
-
I'm still not getting too hyped about this system until it's in my hands, but I thought it was interesting that they got a nice product spread on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1001007241
They're also having preorders available through Best Buy, Target, and Gamestop.
-
Old-fashioned sounding or not, I'm not even remotely interested in the concept, the "promise" of a console based on a fucking telephone, the lack of physical media, or the inevitable onslaught of half-assed indie games.
People keep droning on about "fixing" the game industry with "innovative" hardware, but the only thing anyone's accomplished is to divert the focus away from the games themselves. Dunno about the rest of you, but I've never sat down to play video games and went, "Ugh, this is so BORING. If only the controller were shaped like a waffle iron and the console offered me the *promise* of something intangible, yet wonderful, and eliminated my ability to actually own the shit I buy, I could find contentment!"
Eff. that.
-
If only the controller were shaped like a waffle iron and the console offered me the *promise* of something tangible, yet wonderful
Like Waffles!
-
Like Waffles!
If a console comes along that can make waffles as I'm playing, then we'll talk :p
-
It's a great concept. But from what I've seen, the games available are gonna be nothing exclusive. So why bother with it when you could have all those games on a regular console, plus exclusives?
-
Ok, now this would make me upset:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-57568183-235/ouya-chief-well-launch-a-new-console-every-year/
Although, when I think about how quickly generations of phones go by, I guess it's not so surprising after all. But still, after waiting so long already for my OUYA to arrive, I'd be annoyed to find that it'll be kinda obsolete after only one year. I'm glad I didn't go for the "limited edition" version...
It's a great concept. But from what I've seen, the games available are gonna be nothing exclusive. So why bother with it when you could have all those games on a regular console, plus exclusives?
I haven't looked into the lineup - was more interested in the concept than anything else as I don't have a tablet for gaming - just a small smartphone that's a little behind the times. I'm definitely more into physical games, but we'll see what comes out of this new console.
-
so far there is nothing compelling me to get a ouya and here is three reasons why
(3)new console every year
(2)no exclusive games
(1)its no more powerful then any android phone or tablet on the market
all see is a waste of money and a fad that gonna pass and now there is other companies joining the bandwagon with the same problems
-

Yup, I can see your argument. I ordered one since it's fairly inexpensive and I'm curious about how this will affect the Android game market. There may not be exclusive games now, but perhaps this will be a catalyst for some in the future if things go well.

i don't see it affect the android game market all that mush because most android phone or tablet on the market connect to a tv and there is plenty of controllers for android, so they only way the ouya can to affect the android market is if it was the most powerful android device on the market but it not
