Title: Super Dungeon Explore!
Post by: scott on August 23, 2012, 11:26:40 pm
Has anyone here heard of this game? It's a board game that is supposed to emulate classic dungeon crawl video games, namely of the Japanese variety.

OMG this looks awesome! But ouch it's expensive!

I've heard about this game solely because I pledged to that company's kickstarter for a game called "Tentacle Bento", which got suspended by the kickstarter people because of Kotaku's stupidity (though they continued funding on their own and will be releasing it soon).

It looks like a cool game, but I'm not into assembling and painting miniatures so I'm not terribly interested in that aspect :P

Also, they have another miniatures-based game up on kickstarter right now that also seems interesting:

I'm all about miniatures and tabletop gaming, so it's right up my alley. I just ordered it after reading a ton of reviews on it, I debated on it for a while though. It should be here Monday and then I'll get to work gluing and assembling everything. The good news is, they are releasing an expansion and all the minis will be preassembled this time. I'm going to paint everything, just because I can, and hopefully I can get some friends together soon so we can run through it a few times.

Also, they have another miniatures-based game up on kickstarter right now that also seems interesting:

I actually found out about SDE because of the Relic Knights kickstarter, which I'm backing just because I think it'll be fun to paint up some of the minis. Of course I'm going to back it for enough to get 2 sets and the rulebook so I can actually play it too. I know I want the Cerci starter, but haven't decided which other team to go with.

If I knew someone who would put all the figures together for me I would be a lot more tempted.

Here's a couple of the hero models I've painted up so far.

Fire Mage and Rogue
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/21697512/IMG_20120902_135705.jpg)

Panda Bear Druid - The Panda wasn't my idea, I got it from another guy I was talking SDE with. He painted it up Panda and I thought it was a hell of an idea. So, I told him I was totally stealing the Panda idea.

And yes, the Druid transforms into the Bear.

The panda bear idea is genius!  So much more character than a regular brown beast or what-have-ya.

I really like the way the rogue turned out for sure. And the Panda is such a fun idea. I figured if the game is supposed to be a tribute to old console games like Gauntlet and Zelda, why not have fun with it.

Also, we played our first game on Sunday and it was a total blast, even tho we screwed the rules up a bit. I can't wait to dig in a bit more and get some real games rolling.

Man, those figurines make me wish I knew folks who play tabletop games with minis.  All I want to do is paint lil' chibis, too.
Title: Re: Super Dungeon Explore!
Post by: scott on September 04, 2012, 05:59:19 pm
Ha, do what I do. The gf was already game, but I had to nearly force my sister to play. Both loved it. I'm sure when I show it to my cousins they'll dig it right away too.

The only drawback right now is the price tag. Between this and the new expansion, plus standalone figs and boosters. I'll easily break the $200 mark (not counting the price of brushes and paint supplies).

those are some cool minis. I'd NEVER have the patience to paint one of these anymore, let alone enough to play the game. Good job!

Thanks, my GF doesn't understand how I have the amount of patience required for doing these. But she's also always super impressed with the results too and is always asking to see the latest ones I've done. That said, here is the Dwarf Warrior from the game, which I just finished a bit ago.

Wow scott those look amazing, I wish that I had the skills to do that but my hands shake a bit so they could never come out as nice as yours.

These are really fun to paint, cause you get to go all anime/manga crazy with wierd hair colors and bright colors all over the place. Though, I'm sticking pretty close to darker colors. It's kinda like a 3D coloring book, hah

Thanks. Sometimes my hands get kinda shaky. Mostly if I am trying to put a teeny tiny dot somewhere and need ridiculous amount of control. Of course, I've been painting these things for close to 20 years now too, so that helps. But I'm always learning new techniques. I think I have somewhere upwards of 50 bookmarks on Chrome listing different techniques.

New one. The Barbarian. I went full on pink hair on this one and even did up the loincloth as a tiger pelt, I've never attempted to do tiger fur before and with the pink hair I decided to go all out. (managed to get it right on the 1st try too)

Tiger patterning is way harder than people usually give credit for, so I'm giving you mad props now for that - awesome job!

And with these 3 the heroes are done. Next up I'm working on these treasure chests and mimics (visible in the background). Progress should speed up considerably now, since I'll be working on groups of the same figure at a time.

Thanks, I had my browser open w/ a Google image search loaded the whole time... The hardest part was the gradient from white/light yellow to orange. Even then I wasn't sure if I made the orange too bright. But after I placed the stripes it looks good and I think she's my favorite out of the bunch.

Scott -

Damnit, Man!

How/when do you actually ever find the time to actually ever *PLAY* any games?!

 :o
Title: Re: Super Dungeon Explore!
Post by: scott on September 11, 2012, 01:45:41 pm
Honestly, I haven't had time to play anything in a while. I started playing Xenoblade again a couple weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to continue. Mainly I get some game time in on my 3DS if I am riding in a car or late night before I go to sleep. But the nice thing about painting these, I can paint them while hanging with the GF and watching a movie/TV show.

My problem is, I have more hobbies than I have time. Its a side effect of having been single for so long. So I'm splitting my time between GF, video games, drawing, graphic design, bass guitar, mini painting, audiophiling and board/card games. And at the moment video gaming is getting the back seat.

Oh I want to co op the hell out of that game. I never really got a chance to play Borderlands co op and solo'd the entire thing... which reminds me I need to polish off the rest of the achievements on it... stupid Underdome Riot.

Ha, nice.

Also, what do heroes go into dungeons to collect? TREASURE! I just finished the treasure chests and mimics. I really like the way the Red one turned out. I realized after I finished that I should have used the bronze metallic on the grey wood chests and the silver metallic on the yellow wood chests, since they kinda blend with each other. The Mimics on the other hand I'm fairly pleased with.

More Super Dunegon Explore goodness to share! This time I've done the Kobold Warrens spawn points and the Dragon's Clutch spawn points as well as the Special Edition Candy & Cola and Princess Ruby minis (I painted Ruby to look like Zelda from Link to the Past) These took awhile to do, cause I had to wait for each layer of fire coloring in the ridges to dry before I added the next.

Also, I was waiting for the 2nd Dragon's Clutch spawner to arrive so I could do all of the skulls at the same time to keep them uniform.

Please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE do yourself a favor and (if nothing else) just R-E-A-D the 1st book in the series "A Game of Thrones"...you'll thank me later!

The game(s) pretty much sucked,

the HBO "adaptation" *could* be worse -but- (IMHO) pales in comparison to the books.

*Seriously*; if you read it & *Don't* like the 1st book...you'd be the 1st (out of ~20 people I've convinced to read it - ~1/2 of them not even fans of this genre of writing) not to!

Oh man, beautiful work on that armor.

I'm taking an illustration class next semester and am looking forward to expanding my range into all sorts of things... like crazy corroded armor.  Also, since all my other work up until now has been mainly b&w, it'll be good practice to start looking at color again.

Keep it comin', Scott!  Not sure how you find the time, but big props.

Ha ya. In the next expansion after Caverns of Roxor, it's all Castlevania/ Ghouls 'n Ghosts themed. They have these chibified Skeletons in there that look about as cute as you could possibly make a skeleton look. I can't wait for that pack (There is a Belmont themed hero in there too!)

The Dragon Priests have been done for a little while. But I forgot to post a picture. I'm working on the next set of kobolds now, and I don't have to worry about having the game ready for New Years Eve... the plan for a party fell through (much like every other party I've tried to plan, ha).

Ugh. I need to finish painting the base set. I just got the Von Drakk Manor set, which is all Ghost n Goblins/ Castlevania themed and it's awesome. Pretty much the best looking set so far.

But, I'm currently working on a new mini project that much be done first (I have a bad habit of starting too many projects at once). But, now I have my painting table set up and should be able to make some decent progress soon.
